Applying for an Estonian ID card Based on EU regulations, international students coming from the EU (including EEA and Switzerland) must obtain the right of temporary residence in Estonia. An EU citizen must, within the period of one month from the registration of his/her place of residence, personally contact the Citizenship and Migration Bureau to apply for an Estonian ID card which certifies his/her right of temporary residence in Estonia. The ID card, besides being one of the requirements of residing in Estonia, gives you certain advantages, for example, being the only identity document accepted in the Internet. The ID card enables you to get great discount in public transportation, allows you to apply for scholarships, use Internet banking, book cinema tickets, use e-libraries as well as printing services at TUT. If you have lost your ID-card or experience any problems with using e-services, please call ID-card helpline 1777 or (+372) 677 3377 (calling from abroad). Take these documents with you to apply... Medical insurance According to European regulations, medical insurance purchased in one of the EU countries is valid within the whole European Union’s area. However, to use medical services abroad EU citizens should hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is issued in the place of person’s permanent residence, i.e. in their home country. As a holder of the European Health Insurance Card you have the same right for medical services in Estonia as all Estonian citizens do. You are also free to choose your own family practitioner in one of Tallinn’s hospitals. For more information about doctor visits, legislation and the Estonian health care system please visit the Estonian Health Insurance Fund webpage www.haigekassa. ee/en If you are not a holder of a European Health Insurance Card, any Estonian Health Care Institution has a right to charge you. In this case the refund can be made once you turn to the Health Care Fund in your home country. However, the same procedure of making an appointment before visiting a doctor applies as for holders of European Health Insurance Card. Temporary residence permits must be extended every year during the period of studies. You will receive a new card every time the residence permit is extended. Your personal Estonian identity code will remain the same. You can apply for a TRP (or an extension) at Citizenship and Migration Bureau Office. The closest one to Tallinn University of Technology is Tammsaare Service Point.

By taxi Always check the prices first, which should be posted on the taxi’s right rear window. These consist of a base fare of usually €2.20 - 3.20 plus two per-kilometer rates (one for daytime, one for night) which should normally be around €0.40 - 0.96. When in doubt, you can ask about the approximate price to your destination from the driver before you get in. Ordering a taxi by phone is always the best strategy, as you’ll avoid the dishonest taxis that prey on tourists. Here is a list of taxi companies along with their daytime base fares and per-kilometer rates. Night time rates can be about 20% more. Mobile apps Taxify and Uber are also widely used as an easy and affordable option to order taxis. Reval Takso Phone: (+372) 1207 €2.29 + €0.49/km. Takso24 Phone: (+372) 1224 €2.90 + €0.58/km.

How to obtain your public transport card All people who have registered their residence in Tallinn (students with a valid TRP card and citizens of the EU) can use the public transport for free with this Public Transport Card. People who have not registered their place of living in Tallinn or who are not citizens of Tallinn (student with visas from third-party countries and EU students or who have not received their ID card yet), cannot use the discounts for citizens of Tallinn and have to buy credit for the card system from authorised sellers (R-kiosks, Post Office at TUT TSEBA building foyer etc.). After buying the card for 2 EUR the person has to activate and put their personal information on it. If you are eligible for discounts, you must personalise your Public Transport Card to use them. It is free to personalise cards online, in the public service office (Vabaduse väljak 7) or other sales points of the Tallinn City Government. Elsewhere the service costs €1. Personalised e-tickets are

only valid with proof of identity (Estonain ID card or TRP card). If there are changes to a person’s residency status, they must update their card personalisation. Otherwise, the card validator in the bus will flash red. The Public Transport Card can also be replaced by another contact-free card (e.g., a student card) meeting the standard supporting RFID technology. Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering a public transport vehicle. When a Public Transport Card is held to the electronic validator, the machine checks that the passenger has a valid ticket or the right to discounted travel. Electronic validators are located by every door in all public transportation vehicles. E-TICKETS Singe ride tickets for cash

Studying in TUT Practical information – please take a look here http://www.ttu.ee/academic-information/ and www.ttu.ee/exchange for exchange students. Academic year and semester – an academic year consists of two semesters (autumn and spring semester). Both semesters are 16 weeks long, and at the end of each semester, there is a 3-week exam session. If needed, there is an extra week for additional examinations. ECTS – European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. One ECTS credit corresponds to 26 hours of study by a student. Student code – at TUT you need a student code, which is unique and identifies the student. You will get a student code from your designated Dean´s Office. To access ÕIS (Study Info System) there are two options. The first option is with your TRP/ID card. If you have not received it yet, you may also access ÕIS with a username and password. In order to receive them, first get your student code from the Dean´s Office and bring it to the IT department in SOC 132. Please note that you also need to show an ID. You will need your student code to write on all applications, tests and other papers that you are handed in the university. NB! Degree students in tuition free programmes must maintain a full study load in order to avoid paying fees. What does it mean? Full study load: In full-time study a student is required to accumulate, by the end of each academic year, at least 22.5 ECTS credits in the subjects of his/her curriculum for each semester attended, beginning from the last enrollment. Student who fail to follow full-time study requirement, are obliged to pay for their studies.

Study plan for degree students Students must arrange a list of courses for the semester from required subjects (compulsory courses) and optional subjects (elective courses), which depend on their faculty. Free choice studies Each curriculum in the university includes a free-choice study module where the student can choose any courses that he or she prefers. Courses from other Estonian universities can also be chosen. Students on tuition free programmes may choose as many subjects as they want. Please note that the majority of the courses are taught in Estonian, so please consult your Dean’s office before you register for the courses!

Exchange studies abroad All students of TUT have the opportunity to enhance their studies by spending at least a semester in one of the many partner universities of TUT. Exchange studies at the universities located in the EU member states are funded by the Erasmus+ programme. With the Erasmus+ programme students may go abroad from 2 to 12 months. The same student may receive grants for studying abroad totalling up to 12 months maximum per cycle of study. You can also do your internship in the EU member states! TUT also has bilateral agreements with several universities in Asia and North America. These students can apply for scholarships from their destination countries, universities and private foundations. Do not miss your chance – studying abroad will change your life! Please see more information here: www.ttu.ee/studyabroad and www.ttu.ee/internship Scholarships TUT students with good academic performance have the possibility to apply for scholarships. More information can be found here: http://www.ttu.ee/scholarships/ Students can apply for a scholarship twice a year – in autumn and in spring. Since the most important factor in applying for a scholarship is the student’s Grade Point Average, students who have just begun the first semester of studies cannot apply. Scholarships are also awarded by the TUT Student Union. The purpose of the student council scholarships is to reward entrepreneurship and study motivation and to provide support to students who have special needs (disabilities) or a difficult socio-economic situation.

Student life Student Union of Tallinn University of Technology TUT’s Student Union (SU) is an organisation that represents students and student groups in and outside of the university. The SU has the role of a creator and promoter of opportunities at the university. In general, the best and most supportive learning environment for the students their organisations is created. In doing so, the most important values of the organisation are upheld – democracy and solidarity. The SU supports groups with knowledge and financial resources, negotiations are held with different units of the university and student organisations are aided in finding rooms and other relevant facilities. TUT Student House TUT students do not need to go downtown in search of fun - instead they can find it in the TUT student house! The student house is unique in Estonia and the whole Baltics. While it is mainly a place to relax and take a break from studying, it is also home to active student organizations, providing them a space to collaborate and develop together. However, there are many evenings when it transforms into a top-level club, where students gather to dance and have fun. Events vary a lot – there is something for every taste. The student house is a good place to rent rooms for different occasions. Our rooms are meant for: organizing conferences, workshops, parties, gatherings, studying and group work. Tallinn University of Technology symbols Tallinn University of Technology (founded in 1918) is one of the oldest universities in Estonia. Over the course of nearly 100 years, TUT has developed certain characteristics that symbolise our university. The visual identity of TUT is based on three colors: • cherry red – represents buoyancy, active people and a vibrant student life; • steel grey – symbolises the steely persistence of our students’ spirit and the diehardness of knowledge acquisition at the university; • white – symbol of peace, progress and high moral; balances the combination of steel grey and cherry red. Tekkel – college cap with steel grey bottom, white welt and cherry red prink. You can always recognise a real TUT student by their college cap. The traditional TUT college cap symbolises unity, high authority and a will to act. Juulius – mascot of TUT, the eternal student. Gaudeamus Gaudeamus is a song from the 13th century for European students. The format was provided by a German minstrel C. W. Kindleben in 1781. Students sing it at special occasions, such as graduation. Gaudeamus igitur Juvenes dum sumus; Post jucundam juventutem, Post molestam senectutem Nos habebit humus! Vivat academia, vivant professores, vivat membrum quodlibet, vivat membra quaelibet, semper sint in fl ore! Vivat et respublica et qui illam regit vivat nostra civitas, maecenatum caritas, quae nos hic protegit
