egislation has been introduced to the Associated Students of Cerritos College senate to purchase the “Powerflo 50” hydration unit. The legislation was introduced by the Director of Athletics and student athlete Angel Salcido who is in the football team. The bill asked for $4,000 to replace the current mode of hydration which have been contaminated with mold. The problem was first noted by Salcido about a year ago, but did nothing because he said, “athletes see it but they are so focused with practice and to them water is water.” It is suspected that the mold is mildew, however it is unclear if it a health hazard as the current hydration pump don’t allow for the pipes to be removed and cleaned. The current pump was installed about 15 years ago which with time has deteriorated. Salcido said that it has been repaired so many times and that the machine is being held with “extra screws and tape.” Salcido said, “I actually have no doubt that they will pass the legislation despite the sitting chair having a problem with my presentation.” He has also started a petition that he hopes student athletes will sign to support the legislation.

he budget for the year 2018- 2019 has been passed by the Associated Students of Cerritos College. The budget and adjustments to it were discussed and amended by senate over the course of three meetings. It was unanimously approved by senate on May 2. ASCC Vice President David Ramirez said, “Honestly, I am happy that the process is over.” However, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the budget and the cuts made to it saying that it was, “really hard” to decrease the funding from clubs and organizations. The reason for the reduction in funding was that ASCC was, “coming down from a $1.6 million budget to a $1.3 million budget.” ASCC Vice President-elect Christopher Rodriguez shared the same sentiments and said, “The way I see it, this was a

lot of hard work from the Budget Committee and I appreciate what they have done. I am just happy that the senate got through it.” According to the adopted budget, student activities were reduced by about $35,000. Organizational programs including academic departments, committees and clubs had budget cuts of about $335,000, and student services were downsized by almost $341,000. Student Trustee-elect Phil Herrera said, “It’s just unfortunate where we have put ourselves as far as what kind of money we had to work with this year and the kind of money that we spent for other extra things throughout the year.” In terms of the budget cuts, Ramirez said, “I wouldn’t really say that the cuts were outrageous, I would say that they were necessary and fair. Herrera explained that the reason for finances running short is due to many legislations being passed during the fall se-

mester and not having the future in mind. Herrera said, “You are looking at this account that you are supposed to be helping the students with and so at the beginning of the semester when the account looks really huge and you have to distribute and allocate it, it’s like, ‘Yeah, why shouldn’t we?’” He continued to say that it is at the end of the semester when, “frugality comes in.” He said it is also the time where, “everyone is trying to figure out how we are going to fund some $4,000 project when at the beginning of the semester $4,000 doesn’t seem like anything.” Ramirez explained that coming into meetings “and tie a face to the picture” would help with funding and that “we need the clubs or departments that we fund to come out because at the end of the day anything that happens to our funding gets passed down you know like trickledown cutting.” Herrera believes that it is

the responsibility of senators and other student leaders to be conscience of what is being funded. This is because he believes that being entrusted with an income is “a privilege, not a right.” Rodriguez said that even though the need to pull from reserves is projected it is something he is “trying really hard to avoid,” to ensure that following student leaders have enough funding for following semesters. Ramirez said that even though the process was quick in comparison with other years, there was still room for improvement. He said. “The only possible improvement is to have senators who do want to [discuss] an item show up the next meeting and not just pull things out and not show up.” Ramirez concluded by saying that overall he was happy even though he wished he could have done more to fund clubs and organizations.

Senate decision will ‘make or break’ Phi Beta Lambda said PBL advisor Jasmine Martinez

pposing views concerning funding for the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference leads to discussions about the club’s recurring financial requests. PBL requested about $11,000 from the Associated Students of Cerritos College senate, so that six students and one adviser would be able to attend the 2018 conference in Baltimore, Md. Minority Leader Samuel Jimenez believes the club is asking too much to only send a small amount of students. “Why only six students? Why not more?” questioned Jimenez, “They’re asking $10,000 for six students, and I’m like, ‘really? That’s just outrageous.’” Jimenez also stated the sen-

ate has not met the six students who will attend conference and have not received any pictures or awards that have proved what they’ve won, making him question how they would benefit Cerritos College. Jerry Ramos, professor and co-adviser of PBL, expressed appreciation for Jimenez’s diligence, however, felt his words were ill-advised. “I believe the comments were offensive… it made us sound money hungry, greedy and selfserving,” Ramos stated. “I wish the senator would have elaborated a bit more, but in what he did state it was offensive.” he finished. Ramos claimed that the club is visible, active and people should make the effort to get to know them. Jimenez said he is here to serve the student body of the

school and if he feels like PBL is taking advantage, he is going to try and go against it. He is also aware of senators who are in PBL and has made his concerns known about bias during voting. If there was a motion he could make to not have those senators vote for the bill, he would. Ramos said he understands and will leave it up to student leaders whether members should be allowed to vote or not, although he worries the students will not be able to serve their community as well. “It’s really a make or break. If we don’t get funding, I think we’re done,” Ramos emphasized, “How can you even put a price tag on one person’s achievements?” ASCC will decide whether or not to fund PBL at its next meeting.

Kanye, define the term ‘free thinker’

O

ver the past few weeks, Kanye West has made tweets and public statements that are objectively insane and has been doing so under the guise of being a free thinker. What does he mean by this? It would be more accurate to say that he isn’t a free thinker at all, if anything his words are indirectly advocating to be free from thought. Exchanging one political position for another with the primary reason being that skin color makes the idea different. Rather than discussing the idea itself, what’s being talked about is the skin color of people holding the idea. This sort of thinking ought to be combated with the philosophy of individualism, and bury the racial collectivist nonsense on both sides of the political isle. During a TMZ live stream event, Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere interviewed West. Upon which, came the poorly said and infamous line from West saying, “when you hear about slavery for 400 years, that sounds like a choice. You we’re there for 400 years and it was all of y’all?” Now, a whole lot was said during this interview, but it was the quote #slaverywasachoice that made headlines. Another crucial moment was when West turns to the TMZ employees and asked, “Do you feel that I’m being free? Do you feel that I’m thinking free?” A TMZ employee by the name of Van Lathan stood up and clapped back at West by answering his question saying, “I actually don’t think you’re thinking anything. I think what you’re doing right now is actually the

RACHEL TULLY/FREELANCE ILLUSTRATOR absence of thought and the reason I feel like that is because you entitled to an opinion, you’re entitled to believe whatever you want, but there is fact and real world, real life consequences behind everything that you just said.” Lathan went on to talk about the distinction of West’s life as a wealthy black man and those who are not wealthy and what they go through. Though one can discuss class

distinction when speaking about black lives in America, let us instead tackle how West thinks or should we say, lack there of. All this started with a black conservative by the name of Candice Owens and West tweeting how he likes the way that she thinks. Just to give you an example of how she thinks, here’s the pinned tweet on her twitter page. “‘Now that I’ve been free, I know what a dreadful condition

How the Avengers beat Star Wars John Chavez

s the Avengers more popular than Star Wars to the younger generation? With recent box office developments, it certainly seems that this is the case. The Avengers is not obsessed with nostalgia like Star Wars is, thus catering to an older generation, making it less popular with the newer generation. Star Wars has been a pop culture juggernaut for the past 40 years, and now sees its position threatened by the Marvel cinematic universe. Both are churning out movies at an ever increasing rate. “Avengers Infinity War” is currently on track to becoming one of the highest grossing movies ever, challenging “The Force Awakens”. More recently, Lucasfilm released a picture of Rey handing a lightsaber over to Iron Man, in a congratulatory gesture for breaking records previously held by Lucasfilm. In order to answer the question of why the Avengers are currently more popular than Star Wars, it is important to look at the respective franchise movies themselves.

“The Force Awakens” was almost a rehash of the first movie in the series, while “Rogue One” and the upcoming “Solo” are all ripe with callbacks to the original series. When the “Last Jedi” broke from the tradition, there was backlash from fans who wanted the film to take a more traditional route. This goes to show that most Star Wars fans are affected by nostalgia and thus are of a later generation. Much of this current generation is not familiar with the original trilogy, which made its debut in the late 1970s. While some may argue that this generation had the prequels, there is little to no callbacks to those in the new movies. Either way, nostalgia, the major selling point of the new Star Wars movies, cannot bring in the newer generation. In contrast, the Avengers and entire Marvel cinematic universe are always breaking new ground when it comes to the stories they tell. Their movies are more accessible to the average millennial and consequently are more popular among them. Though these characters have been around longer than Star Wars has, they are given a fresh, Production and printing of Talon Marks is partially funded by the Associated Students of Cerritos College.

new approach to their stories. The selling point of the MCU movies are based on reinventing classic stories to wow the audience. The result is better quality movies that appeal to a broader audience, not one that is just there to see their old favorite characters. If Star Wars wants to remain the top king of pop culture, it has to expand and ditch it’s overreliance on nostalgia. Otherwise, the Avengers will become the new pop culture phenomenon for this generation.

he Catholics getting offended by the Met Gala’s latest theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, are making it shameful to have any association with the church. On Monday night celebrities showed off outfits inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s next Costume Institute exhibit that is currently showcasing fashion influence by Catholicism. The event was approved by the Vatican and was even sent about 50 garments and accessories for the Met museum’s show. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the current archbishop of New York, attended the event to further explain the church’s involvement during a press conference. “It’s because the Church and the Catholic imagination—the theme of this exhibit—are all about three things: truth, goodness and beauty. That’s why we’re into things such as art, culture, music, literature and, yes, even fashion.’’ Despite all this, people still took to Twitter to accuse celebrities of disrespecting their reli-

when he speaks of being a free thinker, or so this is what his defenders are saying. Political defenders of West say that he’s a free thinker because his not toeing the line in the way democrats or the political left want him to. Owens echoed this by calling Jay-Z and Beyonce slaves to the democrats. If you happen to disagree with conservatives while simultaneously being black, then

you’re automatically a slave to the democrats. An absurd notion and a hypocritical one as well. What happened to being a free thinker? Can’t black people think on their own? Owens and West are becoming what they are highly critiquing. Any form of dissent towards the ideology that is preferred automatically makes you a slave to the other side. Ladies and gentlemen, this isn’t freedom of thought as Owens and West would have you suppose, this is freedom from thought. Or as Lathan puts it, “the absence of thought.” This must be fought against in any form that it’s in. Holding a specific opinion while being a person of color should not make one guilty of being an ideological slave to the opposing view. This is betrayal to the philosophy of individualism that Martin Luther King. Jr spoke of when he said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” West and Owens robbed the idea of individuality that King spoke of and turned it on its head for the worse. To assume that the black community is enslaved to the democrats embraces the idea that they can’t freely think for themselves as well as to break the ideological chains of the democrats, is to assert the opposing ideological position, what hypocrisy. West, you might claim to be a free thinker, but in your own battle you’re exchanging ideological chains for another.

gion or of culturally appropriating Catholicism. Twitter user Bearspear (@ bearspear) replied to a tweet by Cardinal Dolan, “I think the exhibit #HeavenlyBodies is meant more to corrupt the ‘Catholic Imagination’ to be honest. There seems to more propaganda than ‘truth, goodness, and beauty’.” Another user, V (@vannsmole) was a bit more extreme when she tweeted out, “Catholic/Christian themed #MetGala? Why is it ok for a bunch of Hollywood nobodies to disrespect my religion? “Very daring to mock a religion that won’t come after them. Next year, let’s do islam, with severed heads, women w/ black eyes, child brides & a side of FGM 4 the girls.” It’s tweets like the second one that can make even a non practicing Catholic embarrassed to think that they were part of the same religion as the people who post them. The outfits the celebrities wore and that are currently displayed in the museum are not culturally appropriating Catholicism or even disrespecting it like some people who just want to feel offended think they are. The event and its participants meant no disrespect to the

Catholic faith, people also need to remember that as previously stated the whole thing was approved by the Vatican. The Vatican wouldn’t approve of something that disrespect a religion that’s so important to so many people, so to those are you that are making yourselves angry for no reason just calm down already. It makes sense that some of the outfits on display resembled religious attire like Rihanna’s papal outfit or themes and saints like Zendaya wearing armor to represent Joan of Arc, but altered because it was combining religion with fashion. The fashion show and the museum exhibit are both more of a celebration of everything that’s a part of the Catholic religion, it’s not often that religious themes are prominently displayed and given so much positive attention. All you salty self righteous Catholics need to lighten up and learn to recognize when people are trying to appreciate your religion for once. Take a note from Joseph (@ stussyjoseph), “DEAR JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR, THANK YOU FOR BLESSING US WITH THESE ICONIC LOOKS, SUDDENLY WE ARE ALL CATHOLIC, AMEN .”

Shedding new light on Donatello’s David Carlos Ruiz

new idea of art perspective was introduced upon many students and professors who attended the lecture of Dr. Peter Weller. The Cerritos College Visual and Culture Studies program presented this lecture on May 8, which was funded by the Associate Students of Cerritos College. Weller is a modern day Renaissance man, an art historian, stage and screen actor and director. He has starred in many television programs like “Sons of Anarchy” and movies, such as “RoboCop.” Weller presented his research on the diverse perceptions people have of the early Renaissance sculpture, Donatello’s David. Along with his research, he presented his conclusions about the highly debated homoeroticism the sculpture portrays. The presentation expanded on the idea of how there should be many ways you perceive art. Upon the first look at Donatello’s David, Weller discussed that people have viewed it to be a very feminine or homoerotic pose, but with a different view at the sculpture from examples provided by Weller that perception changes.

With more research upon the style of pose from that time period, it’s almost as if David is standing victoriously saying, as Weller put it, “Look what I just did.” As the lecture went on, attendees seemed to be astonished at how different the outcome can be when you view something at an angle you wouldn’t think of in the first place. “There’s a distinction in presenting for your peers as opposed to teaching or trying to enlighten students, this was really satisfying,” said Weller referring to the lecture. Weller said the whole point of the discourse was to open up the possible bias of how we look at art. He thought it went very successful because he believed that the attendees saw what he saw from the photographs provided of how the sculpture should be looked at, as opposed to how it’s been looked at. Weller became very passionate about the subject of perspective through movies. “That’s my life and an amazing academy award-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro told me to go look at Renaissance art as movies, but it’s movies and I [look and teach] it from the point of view of movies.” Weller hopes that the stu-

dents left the lecture with, “An open mind, baby!” “So whatever they’re looking at in the future, their not so damn certain that their right,” Weller said. Many students of different majors were in attendance and were left with new knowledge on art perspective. Katherine Morales, studio arts major, said, “I wasn’t expecting that because I was originally here to get an autograph for [his role] in “RoboCop,” but the presentation was really interesting.” Juan Avila, anthropology major, left with the idea that “perspective is key” in art, specifically in antique art, that you can’t judge on a modern perspective. Dennis Zanabria, anthropology and history major, said, “Art history also involves experimental archaeology, that certain things have to be applied to find another answer.” Shelby Odies, a graphic design major said, “I thought it was amazing, it was very detailed and passionate. I feel like we got in depth with different angles and perspectives of Donatello’s statue.” Odies was left with wanting to study more of the history of Donatello and the Renaissance time period itself. “I liked the fact that he took initiative to take a shot from a

different perspective and research how the statue is meant to stand, because once he changed the perspective for us you can instantly see the change,” Odies said. Odies ended with hopes that there can be more presentations such as these, she says, “I love people who are passionate about

it and you can hear the passion in their voice. “I think that makes art more thrilling, you can tell when someone really knows their stuff. “But it’s also about how they bring it to life and with this presentation I felt like the artwork was brought to life.” With the discussion of art

perspective during the lecture, Weller is trying to open up the minds of the adolescence, so they’re not left only having a modern day perspective on the craftsmanship they come across. Weller concluded the lecture with “You cannot buy into one single look at [Donatello’s David]!”

presentation that informed students on the origins of the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, was given by the History department and presented by history professor Walter Fernandez. The event took place on May 3rd to honor the holiday’s approaching date, in the college’s Teleconference Center. According to Fernandez, the presentation was given to help students understand the origins of the holiday. It also gave students a better understanding of the culture and climate that are related to the traditional Mexican holiday. This year’s presentation focused on the Mexican conservatives, who Fernandez described as the ones who lost the war. According to Fernandez the conservatives were a group of Catholic elitists who favored centralized government, and were seen as the bad guys of the war. Fernandez also expanded on what the holiday was celebrating, explaining that it was in honor of the first Battle of Puebla, which took place in 1862 on May 5, in

response to an attempted French take over of the city of Puebla, which the French ended up losing. He described it as a Mexican civil commemorative date of celebration and showed pictures of performances, parades and other celebrations in the city of Puebla, where much of the holiday celebration takes place in. He also explained that the celebrations also took place in gold rush era California in response to news of the victory in Puebla. During the presentation, students were given the opportunity to listen to period appropriate music. Students were also shown various paintings, pictures, and portraits of the different locations and people involved in the history of Mexico that led to the foundation of the holiday. The presentation itself was very heavily attended, with students filling up almost every available seat that was in the Teleconference Center. Brianna Davis, who was a student in attendance at the meeting, said she was enthusiastic about the presentation’s focus. “I think it’s important to look at all sides of the story, with

the Mexican conservatives,” she said. Davis also stated that the Mexican conservative side of the story was interesting to learn, and that it was also intriguing to learn a new fact of the holiday. Sally Havice, a faculty member and colleague of Fernandez, was also in the audience of the presentation. Havice said of what the presentation taught, “There is always something new to learn. No one person can know it all. Education like this provides an opportunity to change the way we think. With that knowledge there is a creation of new wisdom.” According to Fernandez, he gave the presentation to give a history of the holiday. Fernandez also said, “It was primarily to show students what Cinco de Mayo is, and to show that it was a complex story on both sides. “This has been done for the past twenty years, and it’s been different every year. “I certainly want to impart an interest in explaining and expanding history. “Not just for Mexican history, but for all history, it’s all interconnected.”

he PowerPoint workshop took place in the library in the computer lab LC 62. It is free to students and anyone who want to join. This workshop was taught by Albert Wilmovsky, an instructional lab technician. This workshop took place on Monday at 6 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. This workshop is for students who don’t know how to use PowerPoint, know the basics or want to know how to create a stunning PowerPoint. The presentation started with a slideshow demonstrating how to make a simple PowerPoint for every day use, and taught students and others who joined the presentation, the fundamentals of how to use PowerPoint. Creating professional content for presentations, leaning how to add sound effects, transitions, and animations to make any PowerPoint presentation stand out were aspects taught during the workshop. Wilmovsky said,”Were trying different things out and see how people respond to it.” “I think this presentation is useful because more class require putting together PowerPoint presentations, and it gets you prepared for universities.” Despite the low turnout at the presentation, students verbally expressed that they were interested with the information. Dolores (has chosen to not disclose her full name), a member of Toastmasters, stated that she was super stoked about the workshop. “The reminder of where things are, and learning the basics of how to put things together,” she said. She stated that she loved the creative backgrounds and how to add things, also adding that she would use this PowerPoint presentation for work, and for the

Toastmasters Club. “I want to get back into it,” she said. Wilmovsky expressed that the PowerPoint presentation was a tool he wanted to use for students. “This is for students who want to know how to set up a powerpoint presentation for classes or just things in general.” He said that he wants to see students take advantage of what 365 office offers, and is free for students as long as they have a school email. The workshop teaches the basics from fonts, to adding pictures to make it versitle to adding sound effects, and hyperlinking a website to the powerpoint. It gives the user more variety in terms of what type of work you

want to do. From 3D dynamic slide-shows to simple effects. The user can also add in as many slides that fits their needs, crop in a photo and use the snippet tool to cut a photo from a website and add it into the powerpoint. Microsoft also allows users to embed videos such as a youtube video to the powerpoint. The workshop was an allotted thirty minutes long, which students were only taught the basics. However, Wilmovsky said that students were more than welcome to ask himself or others in the library’s computer lab for more advanced questions and tips. Another workshop will be held on May 10 in LC 62 at 6pm, and May 14 at 2pm.

ongratulations to all those graduating! Good luck and pleasant journeys, all your

hard work and dedication has paid off and you can now walk down that good ole path called, “thanks for the money now get the hell off my campus.” Now that you have been given the boot and await-

ing entry into the next institution of higher learning, you have found yourself with free time. “Whatever shall I do with all this free time?” you may ask yourself. The answer is do whatever the hell you want as long as it doesn’t involve you getting in trouble with the law. Don’t throw all your hard work and acceptance into a university away just because you wondered what it was like to get a DUI. Take a trip to a place you have always wanted to visit in America, it’s considerably cheaper, in close proximity and gives off more of an intimate “On the Road” atmosphere than traveling to Europe. Besides why do you want to travel all the way to Italy to see a marble version of a penis when you can go to San Francisco and see an actual penis in the flesh? Another way to enjoy summer break before you officially sell your soul back to academia is go to a concert or a festival. These type of adventures are memorable experiences that will supply you with stories, wheth-

er good or bad, to tell your new classmates. Have a blast while watching your favorite musicians without having to worry about taking an exam the next day. If you do not have the costly concert or festival funds, do not bypass local festivals or events. Cinespia, which incorporates the general public’s obsession with morbidity and cult classic movies, such as “Alien” and “Spirited Away,” is a cool way to cuddle up with your cutie or loiter with your homies. Echo Park Rising is a free music festival in Los Angeles that enlists the musical talents of local artists and bands. Community festivals are a fun and easy way to support local musicians and get free entertainment. If you are allergic to large groups of people, there a couple of activities you can do on your own.

Get a tattoo, if you are the tattoo type, add to your body journal now that you have the time. However, tread lightly when choosing the tattoo route. Remember to always choose a design that holds a significant value for you. Don’t get drunk off cheap liquor and get the words, “Bite Me,” tattooed on your ass. If you are beach bum, you have a plethora of options. Build a sand domicile like a sad adult child. You can go to the beach and act out your favorite scenes from “Jaws.” You can go surfing or learn how to by watching “Point Break.” Or just simply stay home and marathon movies since I am constantly alluding to them. Are you a sporty person? If the answer is a heavily testerone induced, “hell yes!,” then you can go on a hike and flirt with heat stroke while ex-

ploring nature and working out those hamstrings. If none of my suggestions tickle your fancy, then go on to Google or social media and find out what fellow millennials are doing with their summer. Whatever you decide to do with your summer life keep these guidelines in mind. Make sure you stay safe, the last thing you want is your mom trying to wail on you with her chancla after finding out you got into a car accident. Don’t resort to hooliganism, you are no common street punk. Lather yourself up with sunscreen, only weirdos think lobsters are sexy. And finally, enjoy the summer before you reluctantly put on the shackles of the tireless academics. The last guideline is the most important. Summer break is a time to recharge your batteries and makeup for all the times you declined going out with friends and family. Your summer break is how you make it and you are more than allowed to make the most of it. Have fun and stay cool!

Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ is only offensive if you are a racist Liz Corcoles

he show “Dear White People” seems offensive just from the title, but it goes into depth and makes people realize that oppression does not work both ways when there is hundreds of years of oppression to minorities. Netflix’s returning seriesrevolves around six AfricanAmerican students attending an elite college who reveal their college is not so post-racial. The series is timely and does an excellent job depicting people who aren't of color being ignorant and when it comes to cultural appropriation, situations that are affecting minority groups, upper class privilege and as to how oblivious people can be when it comes to race issues. The storyline depicts the lives of college students attending a fictional Ivy college; Winchester, Sam, Coco, Reggie, Joelle, Troy and Lionel and focuses their struggles being black students in a predominantly white environment. Each character had their own chapter in which their struggles are seen through their perspective. Leaving off with last season, Lionel takes a stand and uncovers the college has been accepting funds from donors who are trying to integrate the only black dorm hall, to silence the students in saying they are living in an unwelcoming campus. Lionel Higgins, played by DeRon Horton, is the quiet introvert journalist, who has yet to figure who he is and where he fits in the chaos. At the same time, Sam, Reggie, Joelle are outside, protesting the unjust system that is forcing them to give up the only place that allows them to be themselves and be comfortable. Logan Browning plays Sam White’s character, who is an activist in the black community at her campus. While Sam is portrayed as a strong, black woman and leader of the Black Student Union, she

has her weaknesses and can be narcissistic in believing that everything is about her. Marque Green plays the character of Reggie Green, the activist tech guy who has found his voice and movement in BSU upon meeting Sam. Joelle Brooks, played by Ashley Blaine Featherson, is Sam’s best friend and although she claims she is not Sam’s sidekick, she is portrayed as the second in command. Even so, Joelle shines and shows she can too be the center of attention, not just Sam. The protest does not end well. Troy finally snaps and leaves the shadow of his father smashing a glass door with a shovel, and thus, ending his persona of being the well educated, poised jock. Troy Fairbanks, played by Brandon P. Bell, is the jock who everyone loves and who’s father happens to be the dean. That is until he goes in a downward spiral, causing destruction to himself and having to soul search to figure out his identity. Seeing the storylines from all their perspectives pieces everything together and allows for the characters to grow and see their struggles. Season two picks up with Sam getting trolled by an anonymous alt-right account on social media, which brought up feelings that some of the white students were feeling, but felt they could not express because they would

come off as racist. Reggie, Lionel and Coco all share problems as well. While Reggie is still coping with his run in with the rent-acop from campus pointing a gun at him, threatening to shoot for a simple misunderstanding. The show allows people who aren't of color see what it is like to be a P.O.C and that their privilege of being light skinned is something that plays a part as to how they are both treated differently. Coco deals with being pregnant and with the dilemma if should she keep the baby or not. Colandrea “Coco” Conners is played by Antoinette Robertson and is the preppy, "I want it all" girl who is willing to do anything and everything to get what she wants. As Lionel finally comes out as gay, his editor makes a move on him, but he leaves him out in the cold. Sam and Lionel are chosen by a secret society at the college and they are trying to figure out who recruited them. As the series proceeds, we aren’t left with any big cliffhangers, so it leads to believe that there might be a Season three. It is important to check ourselves in the things we say and educate ourselves to be socially and culturally aware.

irector, screenwriter and producer Andrew Niccol is no stranger when it comes to creating high concept films that answer the "what-if" questions people ask themselves when they are inebriated on good times. This time, Niccol teamed up with Netflix to create another high-concept dystopia, "Anon," and although its "what-if" scenario is certainty a good one, it felt a little off with its plot. "Anon" answers the political question if government should be invade one's privacy for the sake of preventing terrorism and maintaining order. The film is based on society in the near future in which the government eliminates privacy in order to fight crime. Society in the film is under constant surveillance and its citizens accept the de facto selfcensorship as they are monitored in their daily lives. The movie's setting does not contain the tropes one associates with films based in the future, such as flying cars or visiting other planets in space. It does, however, show how technology has evolved to the point in which a person's visual cortex is connected to a massive computer network. Citizens are able to network and browse for information mentally, while storing their memories as digital video files. "Anon" focuses on main pro-

tagonist Sal Frieland, protrayed by Clive Owen, and his plight of trying to solve a case of a killer who is basically a "ghost" in the data-banks. Sal is your stereotypical smoking, alcoholic detective whose face is the very definition of depression and loneliness; at least for the majority of the film. When given the classic whodunnit case, Sal goes through other people's memories and data-banks in order to develop a possible list of suspects. Not only did he find that the files were corrupted by a hacker, he finds that the hacker is able to manipulate what the victim sees by making them watch their own death. During his investigation, he encounters a woman, later known as Anon, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried, who is a possible suspect and one of the few hackers hidden within the sytem. Trying to utilize himself as a potential target, Sal goes undercover and hires Anon to "cleanse" and censor his memories. Sal's world goes upside down as he goes deeper into his investigation, especially when Anon figures out Sal's true identity. "Anon" doesn't have the most original and groundbreaking plot. It heavily uses the stereotypes of every noir film: the mysterious, toxic femme fatale; the "I drink heavily because someone close to me has died because of me" detective; the predictable "unpredictable" true killer and of course the in-

famous "you're getting too attached to this case" line. Although their characters are, again, stereotypical and static, both Seyfried and Owen were able work with what they were given in the script and did a decent job. "Anon" illustrates the world without privacy pretty well through how embedded technology and networking is within the judicial branch. "Anon" uses a similar aesthetic to Steven Spielberg's dystopia crime film, "Minority Report," having a desaturated, almost monochrome color scheme that gives the future with no privacy a bleak feeling. The interface of the network looked appealing through the use of minimalism and how fluid it is, almost mistaking the film as an interactive movie. It also utilizes the first person point of view a lot, emphasizing how easy a hacker can manipulate a person perception. The ending of "Anon" felt bland, confusing and predictable, making you ask yourself, "this is it?" "Anon" is not Niccol's greatest achievement, but it didn't totally suck either. It was just "meh", maybe a couple of "ahhs" at best.

Frank Mazzota retires after 40 years

A 40-year journey: Football coach Frank Mazzotta will be retiring as head coach after serving for the Falcons’ team for 4o years. On May 20 he will be receiving a Golden Handshake from Cerritos College while his family and friends attend the event. Jah-Tosh Baruti

alcons football will have a glaring difference on the sidelines for the upcoming season, veteran head coach Frank Mazzotta will be retiring before the start of the season. Mazzotta has been the head man on the gridiron for the Falcons’ football team for the past 40 years. Coach Mo as he’s commonly referred to announced his retirement via his Facebook page on April 12, much to the surprise of current players. Incoming freshman wide receiver Brandon Jones said, “I didn’t see it coming. “Everybody was shocked.” Coach said he did not want to leave right now, but he’s happy that he’s going out on his own terms, noting that he didn’t get fired or anything like that. Making of a legacy Mazzotta grew up in Pico Rivera, about 20 minutes from the

for the head coaching position, Mazzota said he did a good job in the interview and thus in 1978 was named head coach of the Falcons’ football team. When Mazzotta took the job, he immediately hired Johnson back on his staff, much to the dismay of the football program. However, they could not argue with the results, as Mazzotta lead the team to a championship in his rookie year as head coach, with Johnson by his side. Mazzotta talked about what would have happened if he didn’t get the job as head coach, he said, “A year and a half here [as an assistant] and had I not got the head job, I probably would have left, that’s how stupid I was, because the job’s a great job. He continued, “...at the time, being young, I thought, well, I’d go do something else, coach at another place, because I didn’t want to be an assistant here any longer. Although, it was a great [job].” He talked about his on the field success during his final season and said, “I don’t know

after making the playoffs in the previous three seasons. He added, “I would have loved to end it on a higher note, like our baseball guy [Ken Gaylord], he’s doing really good, he’s going to end it on a great note.” Although, Mazzotta doesn’t really care about the success on the field that he’s achieved, as much as he cares about the success of the student-athletes that he has coached. During Mazzotta’s 40 year tenure as head man of the Falcons’ football team, he’s helped over 500 of his players receive scholarships to four-year universities. He said, “My big deal are those kids, because [for] everyone of them it’s important for me to see their success. “When a kid tells you that I took the place of his father or without my guidance he would have been maybe running the streets, [that’s] the winning thing...” Mazzotta emphasized to his student-athletes to “get someone to pay for your school.” He said of Falcons football, “It’s been my life, that’s been the hardest part, telling those kids I wasn’t going to coach anymore.”

ended up with that.” Although his life has revolved around football, Mazzotta said he was also a gymnast and coached five years as a gymnastics coach at his alma mater, El Rancho High School. After his time at El Rancho High School, Mazzotta got a head coaching gig locally at Warren High School in 1973, where he proceeded to coach there for three years, turning a losing program into a championship program. Following his stint at Warren High School, he said that the coach for Cerritos College at the time, Johnson, was having some trouble and wanted him to help out. Thus Mazzotta ended up at Cerritos College and never looked back.

Achievements/Accolades

Mazzotta has touched the lives of many players and seen some of his former players have great success. Over 60 of his former players have been coaches, while many players have made it to the NFL and hundreds have received scholarships to play football at four-year universities. Angel Salcido, current Falcons’ offensive linemen and Associated Students of Cerritos College Director of Athletics said, “coach Mazzotta has been one the best coaches that I have ever worked with. “The amount of respect for him throughout the football team and the community is overwhelming.” He detailed that throughout his football career, he believes that you can always tell when a coach is going to be done coaching, because they are tired or they have “fizzled out.” Salcido praised coach for his ability to last so long on the Falcons’ sideline, he said, “I am still amazed about coach Mazzotta’s passion for the sport even through 40 seasons, it seems that it only made him more passionate for the game.” He continued on Mazzotta’s

Over 40 seasons as a head coach with Cerritos College, Mazzotta compiled a career record of 252-153-6, his amount of career wins puts him in line with the top eight head coaches in junior college history. He has lead his teams to 21 bowl games total and 17 in the past 23 years. A true hall-of-famer, Mazzotta has been inducted into the Shrine Classic Hall of Fame, as well as the 605 All-Star Game Hall of Fame. Early coaching career

about win percentage, it’s not the greatest, I would have loved to have been better.” Mazzotta has accumulated a 61 percent winning percentage throughout his time at Cerritos College. In 2017-18, which would be Mazzotta’s last with Cerritos College, the football team 3-7 record and missed the postseason for the second time in a row,

Mazzotta coached at the University of Utah for two years, until his dad passed away at 46 years of age, so he came back home to be with his mom. He mentioned the opportunities he could have had, saying, “I was with a staff which every one of those guys ended up in the NFL. “In fact when I left, George Sieford, who was the head coach of the [San Francisco] 49ers, took my place on the staff, so you never know where I would have

legacy on and off the field, he said, “It’s really humbling to know that you’re being coached by the same man who has touched the lives of hundreds of players before you. “I can positively speak on behalf of the rest of the t e a m when I say that he is a great men-

sion of my football career.” Afemata said, he can’t think of a specific memorable moment, but one thing he will remember is that “these refs had no easy days with Coach Mo around, if it was a bad call, he was going to hound them...” He finished with saying, “I will remember the love and hospitality [that] he has shown to me [since] the first day I stepped into the weight room.” Afemata is another example of Mazzotta’s impact on players receiving scholarships. He has accepted a scholarship to Southwest Baptist University. Retirement life

It’s because of him that to the outside world Cerritos [College] is seen as a factory of Division 1 athletes and even NFL players.” Salcido ended with, “It’s amazing to see players from the past come in to visit coach Mo, especially those that played in the NFL.” Fealofani “Tali” Afemata, graduating center for the Falcons’ football team, said, “Coach really took the time to connect with [me] outside of my progres-

It is fairly common for people, after retirement, to relax and kick back on the beach with a piña colada in hand. However, for Mazzotta, he still plans to coach. Mazzotta said he’s most likely going to help his two sons coach in some capacity. He also joked that he’s going to interrupt his wife’s life, because he’s hasn’t been around that much over the past 40 years. Golden Handshake Cerritos College will honor Mazzotta on May 20 with a dinner, which his former players, family, friends and faculty will have the opportunity to thank him for his commitment and dedication to the Falcons’ football program, as he accepts the golden handshake commonly given to Cerritos College retirees.

Sam Turley, although only a freshman, was listed as one of the top performers all season, by his head coach Joe Abing. Turley made it to the conference championships, where he finished third place in the 100-yard backstroke, fifth place in the 200-yard IM, which took place in the finals. He also placed fifth place in the 200-yard backstroke.

Jakob Gonzalez felt like he had a good performance on the game against Pierce College. Jakob Gonzalez said, “I hit the ball hard, tried to put the ball in play and it just fell into my advantage.” With the close win in the first playoff game, Jakob Gonzalez says it wasn’t the best day, but with the second game they came out with a different mindset. Jakob Gonzalez ended with, “We just gotta keep playing ball, we can’t fix something that’s not broken. We have to be aggressive and play inning by inning.” Jakob Gonzalez finished the game with two runs, three hits and two RBI’s. Gabriel Gonzalez felt like his first three at bats, he was getting to big and made a slight adjustment on his last two and luckily got to fast balls down the middle. “I think we did pretty good, we can do a lot better than this. We gave up eight hits, we got 12 hits, but overall pitching, hitting and defense was there,” Gabriel Gonzalez said. Gabriel Gonzalez had two hits and scored twice in the game’s entirety.

Sophomore Micah Hee pitched a total of five innings, faced 26 batters, went 91-53 in pitches to strikes and had six strikeouts. Hee said, “Definitely not one of my best outings, but I was able to keep us in the game. “Weather is always a factor, but you have fight through it, stick to your mechanics, to what you know, and try your best,” Hee said. Hee hopes to win every ball game to come, even though they won the series, he says, “We’re capable of much more.” Freshman catcher Andre Alvarez gave praise to the pitching for holding it down and offense for being in the zone all nine innings. “Every opponent’s gonna be tough from here on out, so we have to be well prepared,” said Alvarez referring to moving past the first round. Alvarez finished the game with two RBIs, was at bat four times and had one hit. The Cerritos College baseball team will start the series against El Camino College at home on May 11, with the second game the following day.

the score to 4-0 in the top of the third. The team came close to losing the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Brahamas coming back, but still down one (5-4). Cerritos College took off in the eighth inning scoring in three runs and capping the game off in the ninth inning with a final run. Head coach Ken Gaylord thought the team was almost there, saying, “I was proud of our first year guys and I think in this series our sophomores were pressing. “We’re all gonna die anyway, go out swinging,” said Gaylord referring to the team being under pressure. Gaylord finds the first round of playoffs being the toughest as it is a round where he personally doesn’t know how the team will react, but following that hopes the team can learn from the first one to prepare them for the next one. Gaylord ended with, “I tell my guys we’re the number one seed for a reason, play like you’re the number one seed without putting pressure on yourself.” Sophomore designated hitter

the NBA Finals and that is not going to change this year either. Although the Warriors have to get past their next opponent which will be the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference Finals. The Cavaliers have to bypass the Boston Celtics to reach another NBA Finals berth, which will be LeBron James’ eight straight Finals appearance. For a while it seemed as if we wouldn’t see that, with the Indiana Pacers taking the Cavaliers to seven games in the two teams first round playoff matchup.

The Pacers put LeBron James in a position he’s never been before, on the brink of elimination in the first round of the playoffs for the first time in his career. However, he and the Cavaliers were able to survive that round and in the next round the Cavaliers took out the Toronto Raptors in a four game swept and the Raptors were the No. 1 seeded team in the East. Ultimately, the Warriors and Cavs are on a crash course that will result in the fourth consecutive matchup between the two NBA juggernauts.
