NEW STUDENT LEADERS WANT CHANGE

The Associated Students of Cerritos College has a new president and vice president who’ll be taking on the mantle of the students’ voice.

Ashley Yim, a 22-year old sociology major, will lead the college as the new ASCC president for the 2024-2025 school year alongside Fatima Oregon, a 21-year-old computer science major, as the new ASCC vice president.

Yim, who is also president of the humanitarian club, the environmental club and the sociology club, spent the summer in South Africa.

She got firsthand experience of the poverty and struggles the citizens have to live through as the result of the persistent effects of Apartheid.

“I’ve been really interested in humanitarian rights and social justice for a long time. I actually discovered it in middle school – which speaks to my privilege because a lot of people learn about social justice from the moment that they’re born into this world. Once I discovered it I wanted to commit my life to helping injustices and human rights issues,” Yim said.

She said, “I wanted to run for president because I thought being in this position would allow me to help as many people as possible.”

Both Yim’s and Oregon’s moms were critical to helping them.

Yim said, “My mom says to just make sure that I’m doing

everything for all the students on campus because sometimes it’s easy to get lost in your position.

Just to make sure to keep my head straight and make sure I’m doing everything for all the students on campus.”

Oregon, who was raised by a single mother, said, “I feel like that’s a pretty big part of my story because I take a lot pride in having her as an example –

FACULTY UNION URGES BOARD TO PASS NEW AGREEMENT

The Cerritos College Faculty Federation, the union which represents faculty on campus, and its supporters took to the college’s board meeting on Sept. 11 to demand that the college pass a tentative agreement on health care coverage for full-time and part-time workers.

The Union was also able to win salary increases, ensure due process and disciplinary steps for faculty and better working conditions – such as codifying intellectual property rights.

Union members gathered at the Administration building and in the Cheryl A. Epple Board Room as leaders passed out red t-shirts and flyers that helped them present themselves as a unified force in front of the board.

While there has been a

tentative agreement between the CCFF and the college, nothing is official until both the union votes for the agreement and the board accepts and approves the agreement.

to pay for part-timers to get this healthcare throughout this state.”

Freitas continued, “This speaks to the students as well because if we are not providing for the workers that we employ then what can the students expect when they go out in the world after they get their education?”

Adrianna LaFuente, an alumni of the college who now works for it, said. “When I found out that we didn’t have medical insurance for part-timers, that broke my heart. Not only because we’re not standing to our word of quality of life, but also because my son has type 1 diabetes.”

that the biggest obstacle he faced was making sure that the decision was fair and financially healthy –made tenuous in the face of state budget issues at the local level.

April Bracamontes, the lead negotiator and the vice president of the CCFF, said that for the college it was ultimately about money and that the district said they couldn’t afford it.

The union and the college will both be voting on whether or not to accept the agreement on Sept. 18 – the union’s voting period ended at 8 a.m. and the board will vote during the board meeting at 7 p.m.

Comments began with Jeff Freitas, the president of the California Federation of Teachers. Freitas has advocated for educators for over 20 years.

He said, “This is about healthcare. For both the full-time and part-time faculty, it is such an important thing. So important that the governor put money there

“This is not only important for us who are in this room but it’s also important for our family members that are at home and they want to be taken care of as well. Thank you for your time and please keep those stories in your mind when you make those decisions because we’re real people too.“

The Cerritos College President, Dr. Jose Fierro, said

Beyond just the union demonstration, several other topics were brought up at the board meeting such as the Native Plant Sanctuary on campus, the role that the college and Jovenes will share in student housing and the faculty stipend for culturally responsive pedagogy and practices initiative.

THE HOLDUP ON CASSIDY’S CORNER

Cassidy’s Corner Cafe, a bagel-focused food service, used to be one of the few places to get food on campus, but it’s been out of service for quite a while now.

Students at Cerritos College are still awaiting the reopening of Cassidy’s Corner Cafe on campus as its continued absence has been prolonged by delays.

They serve coffee and fresh homemade bagels making it a staple here on campus and for the residents of Los Angeles County.

The Cassidy’s Corner that students have been expecting to open on campus is going to be closed for the remainder of the fall semester with the possibility of it opening during the spring 2025 semester – a full year later than expected.

Cerritos College students were excited to see the reopening of Cassidy’s Corner.

Students such as Destiny Encinas, a biology major, were shocked to find that it is still gated off and nowhere near opening this fall semester.

“Spring was my first semester

here on campus and I thought it was really cool that they were opening a bagel spot. I was waiting every day for it to open and then it never did – I am still excited for its arrival though,” said Encinas.

Elizabeth Miller, the dean of student services, said they anticipated the opening to be spring of 2024 but challenges arose.

“There has been a lot of challenges with the Department of Public Health… because of the type of building it is, a container building, we have been going back and forth with agencies about the structure, hook-ups and codes,” Miller said.

“There’s a lot of permitting and planning, – that’s where we have encountered our roadblocks, but we hope to get it open soon,” Miller elaborated.

Despite the roadblocks that the student affairs staff are working through, students have been completely left in the dark about updates about what caused the delay and when they can

Cerritos College excitedly announced a new student housing project after Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 155 – which grants money to community colleges for affordable housing developments that serve their students.

expect it to be open.

“I wish that it was open already, it would be nice to get a snack close by instead of walking all the way towards the Student Center for food,” Mary Rivera, an animation major, said.

“Some of my classes are much closer to this part of campus, so I would love to be able to go get a bagel,” Rivera continued.

Cassidy’s Corner is on the south side of campus near the New Falcon Way and Studebaker Road.

68 million dollars for this new project.

Even though this might seem like a new project to some, Cerritos College has already seen success in off-campus housing, with the first ever California housing development in a community college called the Village.

The college hopes to continue its success as, after opening the Village in 2020, students in the project produced higher GPAs and completed programs faster than their peers.

When asked about the start day of building this new on campus housing, the director of Physical Plant & Construction Services, Anthony Parker, said, “Pending dates we would like to start in 2025…completion should take around 24 months.”

Parker also said this project will most likely be built in the college’s parking lot 7. The plan right now is for the dorms to be three stories tall and 3 different buildings which consist of 26 studios, 62 doubles and 11 fourbedroom apartments.

After finding out about this bill, Cerritos College attended many meetings, aiming to be one of the 13 community colleges that receive funds for student housing – the college will receive

ASCC senators. This experience helped them hear the concerns of students and faculty across campus and they aim to address these issues in the coming year.

According to Yim, Oregon spearheaded the move to run in the special elections after Yim had lost the presidential election last spring.

This totals to around 318 beds, or students served, for this project – however, the college’s board of trustees still needs to vote to approve this plan.

Students seem very excited

Oregon said, “I wanted to run with Ashley because I knew she was running the humanitarian club and she’s president of the environmental club, so I know she’s an active student on campus and she does a really good job at keeping her clubs active. I just knew she’s a really good student and someone who

Also Brieseis Rodriguez, an 18-year-old freshman, said, “I think it is really good news because there are a lot of people who are looking for a house and trying to be more independent and I think Cerritos would be a good opportunity to have that.”

According to Cerritos College, it’s an exciting opportunity for students, especially for those who must use public transportation, as Cerritos College serves multiple big cities such as Long Beach, Paramount, and Lakewood. Cerritos College also plans to build a new stadium and a new police station.

THE ‘BRAT’ MARKET IS A HIT!

Brat summer continues to live on through the Soul Real Market.

Soul Real Market hosted a brat-themed night market on Friday, Sept. 13 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Anaheim colony house.

Soul Real Market is marketed to have “something for everyone”. They range from vendors who sell Y2K clothing, jewelry, tattoos, camera equipment and more.

The market invites small businesses to every market they host, they open up a google form for small businesses to get a chance to expand their business.

The event was a big hit in the city of Anaheim, proven by the hour-long wait to get in.

Inside the market, you are met with a downstairs and outdoor area where there was a majority of clothing, as well as many jewelry, shoes, niche items and a DJ as well.

Yessenia Manrique, a Maywood resident, says that she enjoyed the music they had and the styles of clothing.

“The music that they had going on really hyped up my friends and me,” said Manrique, “The clothes too, they had something for every style and such a variety of options

for everyone.”

In addition, there was also an upstairs section that dealt more with jewelry, candles, tattoos, tooth gems, etc.

The biggest hit of the night had to be upstairs where two tattoo artists were doing flash tattoos, prices ranged from $31- $100.

The waitlist to get tattooed by one of the two artists had over 50 people.

Tattoo artists, @conejxta

and @naomitatts received major exposure for their unique tattoo flash designs.

Many other small businesses also had a major night at the Soul Real Market.

Ray Pham, owner of studiocorps, a small accessory/ jewelry business started just earlier this year. Selling items such as bracelets, keychains, stickers and others.

“This was my second market

with them and it was my best one yet,” said Pham, “I practically sold out which was insane so, big thanks to the people behind Soul Real Market and the customers!”

What made the market shine had to be the jewelry vendors and the unique styles that they brought to the market.

Ash Mendoza, owner of Fallen Alien Jewelry, which is an alternative brand that creates special one-of-a-kind jewelry and

accessories, enjoys the unique experience that Soul Real Market provides.

“I’ve been a vendor at Soul Real Market for a little over two years now! it’s one of my favorite markets to vend at since the organizers are amazing and the people who attend are always so friendly.” said Mendoza.

Soul Real Market did not disappoint with this brat-themed market.

Especially with the amazing line-up of vendors that had such an amazing variety of items and such unique styles for customers to shop from.

The best way to stay up to date on future Soul Real Markets is through their Instagram.

They typically post about their events as the day creeps up, but as of now, their bio holds three upcoming events.

One of the upcoming events is for the month of September which takes place in Fullerton on Sept.29. The two other markets for the month of October will take place on Oct.6 at Rodeo39 public market in Stanton and on Oct.12 in San Diego.

Details for the markets theme and other specifics such as address and times will be realeased in the future through their Instgram account @soulrealmarket.

BELL GARDENS CELEBRATES EL GRITO OF INDEPENDENCE

At the event were various zones where families could participate in activities.

The Bell Gardens community celebrates El Grito of Independence at Veterans Park with music, food, and activities.

On Sept. 13, citizens of Bell Gardens gathered together for the El Grito of Independence event hosted by the city.

El Grito of Independence, known as the Grito of Dolores, celebrates when Mexico gained its independence from Spain. On Sept. 16, 1810, the parish priest of Dolores, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, called out to the town and rang his church bell which signaled Mexico’s war for independence.

The Bell Gardens community gathered to celebrate El Grito with music, food, activities and more.

The event included folklorico performances, mariachis and music by Banda Imperio. There were also various food trucks selling tacos, sopes, nachos and sweet treats such as ice cream.

“As a Mexican, it is nice seeing our community come together and celebrate the independence of Mexico. Since we can’t celebrate it over there, it’s a nice way to actually witness this event here,” said Marilyn Castillo, who works at the Clara Senior Center and is responsible for involving seniors in community events.

These zones include photo booths, face painting, a science zone for children, loteria and a fun zone with bounce houses.

Along with that, there were small businesses and a place to showcase community art.

A vendor, Mabel, owner of Mabel’s Jewelry shared how she began creating jewelry after losing her job of 20 years.

“I invested in doing some jewelry and I started selling little by little. The way I help [the community] is by trying to have low prices. I have one kid and I know sometimes it’s very difficult to get a little something for them so in that way I’m trying to help the community,” said Mabel.

Lucy Veloz, a volunteer for the Bell Gardens art station said, “I think its important for the city and for the people, because we need to know the art of the community. They need to know how to paint and express themselves in different ways, so we need more support for the arts.”

In Mexico, El Grito is celebrated on Sept. 15 and 16 with the Mexican president calling out to the people by ringing the same bell Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla used in 1810 and delivering a speech to honor the people and day of El Grito.

ART GALLERY PRESENTS ‘BACKUP UPTOPIA’

The Cerritos College Art Gallery presents a new exhibition “BackUp Topia” created by McLean Fahnestock.

The event was held on August 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting with an 1 hour long presentation called “Artist Talk” where Fahnestock explains her inspiration behind the exhibition.

The exhibition consisted of a new print, video, and installation that was produced during her month long residency at the Cerritos College Art Gallery.

“I really wanted to come back to Southern California to make some work that was really centered here. I had the opportunity to work with the curator here at the art gallery James MacDevitt and was given this opportunity to showcase my work” said McLean Fahnestock.

Many of her inspiration behind her art work is influenced by her grandfather John Sheridan Fahnestock who was a farmed explorer of the South Pacific.

“I have a family with many explorers, my grandfather was an explorer. So, it just made me think about what made you want to become an explorer. A lot of my art work is heavily inspired by my family background” said Fahnestock.

Even though she never met her grandfather, she heard many stories about his exploration of the South Pacific.

Many of his exploration documentation is archived in many institutions around the country like the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

The main focus of this art exhibition is for the viewer to differentiate what is

SABRINA’S SHORT N’ SWEET POP UP SHOP

Complex hosted a three-day pop-up event for Sabrina Carpenter’s new album, “Short n’ Sweet,”at 433 N. Fairfax Ave. from Aug. 23-25

Saying it was a hit might be an understatement.

The release of Carpenter’s highly anticipated sixth studio album was everything fans could ask for and more.

“Short n’ Sweet” earned over 57 million first-day streams on the global Spotify chart.

It debuted with over 17 times as many Spotify streams as her last album, “emails i can’t send”

was something you could wear every day.

The prices were high, considering a simple tank top with a screen-printed design that was $40.

Fans examined the merch for some time throughout the line, debating if it was worth it.

Makayla Schneider shared that her favorite piece of merch was the yellow espresso crewneck.

A favorite throughout the whole pop-up was the old-school filmphoto booth, along with being able to see everyone ‘s pictures.

“I have worked with many themes by implementing what location brings you paradise, peace and bliss. It’s that question that made me curious about creating this work” said Fahnestock.

The exhibition consists of many different components that are displayed within the art gallery like videos, GIFS, architecture, and many others.

Throughout the gallery McLean Fahnestock incorporates real life nature with electronics like TV’s, projectors and other factors.

BEETLEJUICE SEQUEL

MIGHT LIVE UP TO THE ORIGINAL

After the 1988 cult classic “Beetlejuice” directed by Tim Burton was released 36 years later the long awaited sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was released on September 6, 2024.

Many times when sequels are released years after the original they tend to feel forced or completely different from the original. But, that wasn’t the case with this film.

The film stars three of the main characters from the original film: Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, with new supporting cast members: Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s ex wife, Delores, Willem Defoe as Wolf Jackson and many others.

to implement AI and technology within the artwork to give a full visual of reality and AI” said Fahnestock.

Starting at 7 p.m. attendees rushed to the art gallery exhibition to view the art being displayed. Many students attending had very positive comments about the presentation and art exhibition itself.

Crystal Moya, studios arts major said “I thought the work itself was pretty interesting I enjoyed the visual side of it. I loved hearing the back story I think it gave the artwork more depth. I thought it was really nice I like how she implemented real life things with electronics that was a nice touch”.

BackUp Utopia will be featured in the Cerritos College Art Gallery from Aug. 26 to Oct.11, 2024 at 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

shrunken heads and wild yet horrid and grim death scenes.

Beetlejuice’s ex wife Dolores played by Monica Bellucci is portrayed as a vengeful character who wants to come after Beetlejuice and steal his soul which will later make him face trouble towards the end of the film.

The event started at 11 a.m. and lasted until 7 p.m. However, fans lined up as early as 8 a.m.

It took about two hours to get inside the pop-up.

As fans waited, many of them expressed some of their favorites lyrics in regards to the album, as well as the merchandise for sale.

Marlene Calderon said “Don’t smile because it happened, cry because it’s over,” form the concluding track of the album, “Don’t Smile’, was her favorite song.

Tia Geissel shared her top three tracks from the album. Geissel said, “Lie To Girls, Don’t Smile, and Good Graces.”

When you entered the pop-up, you were greeted with posters on the wall with lyrics, clothing worn throughout different photoshoots for the album

With the addition of many small objects that connect with songs from the album. Looking at the available merch, a lot of the clothing looked very simplistic but it

The line was very long for the photo booth, and there was no time limit as to how long you could be inside.

They fit many people inside the space to move the line along, making it very crowded.

In order to use the photo booth, you did need to purchase a piece of merch.

That would make it about $30 at the minimum for one strip of photos.

Ultimately, most people decided to buy merch since it was the only way to utilize the photo booth.

Overall, the pop-up itself was something super fun for fans to get exclusive merch, cute photo ops, and make fun memories with friends and other fans.

From the beginning of the film, director Tim Burton added some elements from the original which set the tone going into the film.

The film begins with the Deetz family coming together to reunite following the death of Lydia’s husband. Lydia’s daughter Astrid Deetz begins to become fascinated with the story of Beetlejuice who seems to be still causing chaos in the afterlife. While Lydia tries to disconnect from the supernatural world due to her experience with Beetlejuice.

Astrid’s curiosity about the supernatural world starts to grow which leads to a dangerous connection she makes with Beetlejuice.

Michael Keaton’s return as Beetlejuice was more than I actually imagined. He brought back his unpredictable antics while also implementing his mischievous and chaotic energy from the original film.

Tim Burton uses some of the same themes from the original film like dark humor, very animated styles like

Jenna Ortega’s character does an outstanding job of portraying the rebellious teenager which brings a new and fresh energy to cast that wasn’t present in the original.

Many of the same themes of a gothic aesthetic are shown with very unpredictable and humorous events throughout the film.

The only issue with the film is that the plot towards the end leaves an interesting ending that might leave fans believing that it can be a possible return of Beetlejuice.

After watching the film many people who are fans of the original will be satisfied with the outcome of this film. The movie has a lot of twists and unpredictable scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The film is a solid 8 /10. If you’re a fan of the original 1988 classic or Tim Burton’s other films, you will definitely enjoy the sequel.

ITS A FEMININOMENON

The summer of 2024 was the summer of girly pop-stars. From breakout star, Chappell Roan to Sabrina Carpenter and from Charli XCX to Billie Eilish. Women powerhouses have taken over the top ten hits, the radio stations, and tiktok trends.

The music industry has always had Strong female voices leading the way .

Let us take a trip through the last millenia

The 1920s-1950s era of music brought us jazz legends such as Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Holiday, an iconic jazz singer gave us the riveting renditions of songs such as “Strange Fruit”, a song with lasting historical impact as it addressed lynching in the south, and “I’ll be seeing you” an emotional piece about missing a loved one.

The 60s, introduced us to Etta James, with the release of her legendary R&B and soul album, “At Last,” whose track title is easily her most recognizable song but the album was full of tracks that were just as good, from the heartbreaking lyrics of “I would rather go blind” to the warmth of “A Sunday Kind of Love.” The album left a permanent mark on music history and is loved by millions, as it should be.

The 60s also brought us The Supremes, later known as Diana Ross & the Supremes. Under Motown records, they achieved number 1 on the US Pop Charts with their song “Where did our love go” and continued releasing hits such as “Baby Love,” “Come See about Me,” and “Stop! In the name of Love!” Could you imagine a world without Diana Ross?

The 70s saw the rise of classic rock. From Stevie Nicks to Joni Mitchell the 70s led the way for female rock stars.

This was also the Disco era of music with the likes of “Hot Stuff” by Donna Summer, “To Be Real” by Cheryl Lynn and “Dancing Queen” by ABBA dominating the nightclub scene.

The 80s brought us everything from Madonna to the smooth vocals of Sade. The 80s also gave us the release of Whitney Houston’s iconic self-titled album in 1985 followed two years later by her album “Whitney” in 1987, with hits such as “How Will I Know,” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” The 80s also saw the beginning of the alternative rock scene from Sonic Youth and Blondie.

As we enter into the 90s, the R&B scene was thriving with music from Mariah Carey,

Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill and many more.

We also saw a rise in alternative rock as No Doubt, the Cranberries, and Fiona Apple rose to fame. We also saw the emerence of girl punk rock bands such as Bikini Kill and bratmobile.

From Britney Spears all the way to Lady Gaga, the early 2000s and 2010s is where modern pop music bloomed.

The 2000s also gave us Beyonce as a solo artist with the 2003 release of her debut album, “Dangerously in Love” and the world was changed forever.

Taylor Swift also released her debut album in 2008 and has since become a household name.

Beyonce and Swift continue to dominate the music industry today which speaks to the level of impact of their work, past and present.

This is where we meet Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish and many more. In their music we are able to hear the inspiration from musicians in the past. From Billie’s blues-ispired tracks to Roan’s Kate Bush-esque vocal runs. Women have always been an important and vital part of the music indsutry. They’re creative force is shown through their writing, and the impact they have on generations of musicians.

ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT INCELS

Men do not do their part to stop the spread of the incel mindset and prevent violence against women.

If you’re a man who holds even the smallest respect for women then you should be standing up and defending women or you are part of the problem.

In recent years, we have seen a rise in the normalization of incel culture.

Incels are commonly members of an online community that are involuntarily celibate. They’re fueled by their insecurities and this festers into resentment and hostility towards women.

They believe that women owe them sex and it’s women’s job to provide it. Because that is not actually how the world works, there is a built up resentment towards women.

We are not here to talk to those men.

They will not listen to us or any woman.

To hear the concerns of women you have to see them as individuals, as people. They do not.

We are here to talk to the rest of you.

We are here to talk to the men reading this who while they are not incels, they are bystanders.

As social media grows and people find outlets to express themselves or go in search of like-minded content creators, we see a rise in content that caters to this incel mindset

Many of their viewers are minors.

If these influencers teach young men to disrespect and disregard women, they will not listen to their mothers and their sisters, but they might listen to the men in their life.

When women share their concerns about men

it is always met with “not all men” rather than empathy?

Why is “equal rights, equal fights” your first response to women wanting equality , when you won’t even confront another man when you see them being predatory towards women?

If men are meant to protect then why aren’t they doing it? And why are they not being proactive and preventing things from escalating to the point where a woman would need protection.

Men who don’t stand against the incel problem are ultimately a part of it.To the men reading this, call out the other men around you and do not accept inappropriate or violent behavior from them.

PEOPLE HATE TAYLOR SWIFT BECAUSE SHE’S A SUCCESSFUL WOMAN

She’s one of the most prominent celebrities of the 21st century. However, she is also one of the most hated. Is it because she’s a bad person and because she makes bad music? Or is it that she is just a successful woman in the music industry?

Taylor Swift has been deemed as one of the most prominent celebrities of the 21st century. She’s one of those artists that if you don’t love, you hate. However, nowadays it feels as though people love to tear her down and minimize her

accomplishments, merely because she doesn’t align with their music taste.

Could it be rather that she is just a successful woman in the music industry?

Swift has constantly been scrutinized throughout her entire career.

It’s something that she has been highly aware of for a long, long time and she recognizes that a lot of it falls on her being a woman, a successful one at that.

For a long time throughout Swift’s career, a lot of her backlash came from “writing too many breakup songs”.

Interestingly enough, we’ve never heard the media or anyone say the same to successful male artists.

It’s very widely understood that the success of Swift’s caliber is an attractor of envy and hate, especially for successful women of the 21st century.

Historically, women who have garnered success have been subject to hate mobs of many, questioning their talent and skills in their respective crafts.

Swift understands deeply that if she were a man, things would not be the same.

‘The Man’ off her seventh studio album perfectly depicts that ideal

of the way that men are treated in everyday life in comparison to women.

The public outcry of hate towards Taylor Swift reveals the underlying truth that’s masked by the lack of understanding of music.

You don’t just hate Taylor Swift, you hate successful women with prominent status in the world.

Taylor Swift is an artist who used many of her negative experiences to empower herself and as a result, we have seen her become an artist who will be talked about for many years to come.

The problem is that a lot of Swift’s criticism is a look into what many women deal with in the industry.

They have to fight harder for everything they earn more than men do. Everyone needs to be set on an even playing field because it would make a lasting impact on future women in the music industry.

Taylor Swift’s hate comes from a deeply rooted hate for women and their successes and is masked by throwing lazy hate on her music.

LATE STRIKE SECURES WIN

A dramatic late winner lifts the Falcons over the tough College of the Desert team.

The Cerritos College women's soccer team took on The College of the Desert on Sept. 6 defeating them 2-1 in a thrilling comeback victory.

The game started early due to extreme heat, but the sun was still beaming down by the 11 a.m. kickoff time.

College of the Desert came out prepared, moving comfortably in tight spaces on the pitch and effectively working their way into the Falcons half.

The early offense for the Roadrunners would pay off as six minutes into the game #7 Ruby Segura would find the back of the net – putting The College of the Desert up 1-0.

The Falcons would struggle to

maintain possession and create sustained offense before a water break would give both teams the chance to cool down.

Coming out of the break, Cerritos looked much more lively – they seemed to settle into the game feeling more comfortable as they increased their time of possession.

“It was like, 'we have 20 minutes left, gotta leave it on the field' – and they did,” said Coach Vascones,” With the intensity, we knew they were tired and so we just went at them as fast as we could – took advantage of the opportunity finally.”

FALCONS ERRORS COST THEM VICTORY

The undefeated Falcons took on the undefeated LA Mission Eagles losing a tightly contested match up.

The Cerritos College Falcons volleyball team falls short against Los Angeles Mission College by a score of three sets to two.

The Falcons came into this game against the Eagles with an undefeated record of 3-0 including back-to-back sweeps

against Santa Ana College and Golden West College.

The LA Mission Eagles also came into this game yet to lose with a record of 6-0 none of which saw the fifth set.

This was going to be a very amazing game from the start with the first set being a very competitive back and forth.

The Eagles had the lead in the first set for the majority of the stages with it being 9-6 in favor for the Eagles but the Falcons close up that lead to tie it up in the mid way point 15-15.

By the tail end of the first set the Eagles and Falcons were tied

The intensity would lead to a mistake from College of the Desert – the ball was played into the box, where it hit off the arm of a Roadrunner defender – leading the referee to call for a penalty.

Tempers would soon flare with the call being controversial, Roadrunners adamantly pleading their case to the referee, who stuck with his decision.

Surrounded by commotion, Jenna Santos, the youngest member of the team, stepped up to take the penalty.

Speaking about the noise before her spot kick, Santos stated, “Honestly, I just focus on

at 23-23 when the Eagles narrowly got the last two needed points to end the sets for a score of 25-23.

The Falcons won two very competitive, and needed sets to take the lead 2-1 winning the 2nd set by a score of 25-20 and the 3rd by a score of 25-23.

“I just try to go for every ball I see. I mean I try to do it for my team” said Defensive Specialist Priscilla Castillo who ended the game 13 Digs.

The fourth set however would seem to turn the tide in the Eagles favor.

LA Mission had a five point lead going into the first timeout of the set called by Cerritos with the score being 13-8.

The Falcons would go on to score two more points after the timeout but that wouldn’t be enough as LA Mission would answer back by scoring four more points making the score 17-10.

LA Mission would go on to score five points to Cerritos four before the Falcons would go on a run.

The Falcons would go on to score four unanswered points with three being errors by the Eagles making the score 22-18 showing life nearing the end of the fourth set forcing LA Mission to call a timeout.

LA Mission would come off the timeout scoring the final three points to end the set 25-18 having the match now tied up 2-2.

The Falcons would begin the first set scoring first but LA Mission would take the lead 8-3

Receiving the ball in midfield, the Roadrunners continually tried to play long balls between the center backs, but goalkeeper Trinidad Arzimendi did well to retrieve most of them before they became dangerous.

As the game went on Cerritos seemed to have a bit more left in the tank – the last five minutes were an all out attack by the Falcons.

The game crept into extra time when Ariana Rivera picked up the ball outside the box before dribbling into open space she fired a rocket that ricocheted off the bar and in securing the win in dramatic fashion.

Players surrounded Rivera in celebration jumping and dancing across the field as they soaked in the moment.

scoring. I don’t have any nerves or anxious thoughts – I just look at the goal and I just know already that I’m gonna score.”

Score she did as the ball rolled comfortably into the bottom left corner, tying the game up 1-1 heading into halftime.

The goal was the first of Santos collegiate career, she said, “I feel excited cause I feel like I can bring a lot to the team and I have many more to come.”

Second half action kicked off with both teams looking to find the goal that would separate them, but College of the Desert would be more effective early on.

switching sides of the court.

LA Mission would end up winning the set 15-7 and winning their first five game set 3-2 staying undefeated.

Cerritos ended the game with a total of 33 errors which was their second highest since their first game.

“That was one of the sloppiest matches that we played so far this season and we kind of played what seemed like an out of body experience” said Falcons head coach Kari Hemmerling when addressing the teams issues.

“We never really got vibing that match and everyone agreed at the end huddled up there that we just felt off...I don’t know if it’s first home game jitters or whatever it may be” said Hemmerling.

Rivera had this to say about her game winner:

It feels great. I’ve been struggling with my shots and getting that game winner just boosted my confidence more.

Confidence will be high in the Cerritos camp heading into their next matchup against Fullerton College on Sept. 20.

1 5 FINAL

Setter for the Falcons Leeya Rubio agrees that the team felt off “I think at moments there was times where we kind of fell apart and we didn’t really come together as a team.”

“My biggest thing is just as long as we come together and as long as we play hard there’s no disappointment in my team” said Rubio.

“We are going to work on our blocking schemes and better on defense just cleaning up little things that we’ve been pretty good at but we haven’t played as good of teams” says Hemmerling.

Cerritos will have their next three games all on the road and are looking to improve on the errors from this loss.

FALCONS EEK OUT WIN STREAK

Jonathan

The Falcons beat Cuyamaca College 1-0 in a game where the easily could've scored more.

Cerritos College eked out a close win against Cuyamaca 1-0 in their non-conference matchup Sept.10.

It was difficult for either team to separate themselves early on as the first ten minutes passed by with both teams attempting to figure each other out.

However, lanes began to open up as the game went along with Cerritos finding success working the ball through the midfield, while Cuymaca was at their most dangerous on the wing.

Soon after the Falcons offense nearly was awarded a penalty after #11 Pedro Reyes went down in the box but the referee didn’t see enough in it to award the spot kick.

However, another opportunity would open up for Reyes as the Falcons would have a shot on target saved before he swooped in to score the second effort giving Cerritos the 1-0 lead.

“It was a good team effort, uh I feel happy that I got to score my first goal, and just keep the

momentum up, and hopefully that's the first of many” said Reyes.

The goal would carry the Falcons into the half with a lead and the momentum firmly in their favor.

The second half would show that the Falcons were in control of the game as they continuously made their way into the final third but struggled to put away chances.

Coach Artiaga stated “You know that's kinda been a theme the whole year we don’t have problems getting in we’re just having an issue putting the ball away, I mean this is a game we should’ve been up three, four nothing . . .” The second half of the game would show some holes in the

JIM HARBAUGH WILL BRING A SUPERBOWL TO LA

After the LA Chargers week one performance defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 22-10 it is safe to say that the Harbaugh era will bring success to the Chargers.

Jim Harbaugh, former head coach of Michigan’s college football team made his return to coaching in the NFL after nearly a decade and continues to have a winning culture.

Harbaugh now has a record of 45-19-1 as an NFL head coach after the win on Sept. 8 most of those wins coming from his time with the San Francisco 49ers.

In his first year as head coach with the 49ers, he brought them to 12 wins and five losses and got them to an NFC Championship game only a season after the same team went 6-10.

In Harbaugh’s second season, he brought the 49ers to the Super Bowl but fell short of a championship which I believe will not happen again and he will be the one to bring the Chargers their first championship.

Now the Chargers aren’t in a position to make a deep run in the playoffs this year but it’s not crazy to say that they can make the playoffs.

This week one game showed us how Harbaugh is looking to run this offense which is through effectively running the football.

Last year the Chargers averaged under 100 total rushing yards per game at 96.6 total rushing yards per game but Harbaugh has already changed that

because the Chargers had a total of 176 rushing yards.

In the first half of the game, the Chargers weren’t effective running the ball much but Harbaugh was able to adjust by putting in JK Dobbins to take most of the carries in the second half.

Dobbins gained a total of 135 yards which was the third-best rushing yards in week one.

The Chargers signed Dobbins this past free agency to help out Harbaugh’s offense and Harbaugh knew this was the guy to go get to help the Chargers struggles when it came to the running game.

Harbaugh’s ability to find the right players will lead this team to nothing but success not only in free agency but he knows how to draft the right players out of college as well.

This past NFL draft the Chargers picked offensive tackle Joe Alt and while fans didn’t agree with this pick at the time it was the right one.

Joe Alt didn’t allow a single pressure or sack during that Raiders game against one of the best defensive line players Maxx Crosby.

This is all without their top quarterback Justin Herbert having to throw the ball as much adding that into the mix adds a whole other element to the Offense.

Though a lot of improvements are still being made along the positions of the interior offensive line and the wide receivers it is safe to say that Harbaugh will continue to make the right decisions

Cerritos defense as several small mistakes nearly led to costly goals including an opportunity just prior to the end.

The ball was lost by the Cerritos defense right in front of goalkeeper Griffin Welch but the ball was lifted over the bar saving the game.

“Again I reiterate it happened late we were playing with three in the back and they were doing just fine,” said Coach Artiaga.

“I went to four in the back to try get more secure and it almost backfired it’s almost like we, instead of being secure we played worse, we had a couple breakdowns.”

A big reason why Cerritos was able to keep this lead throughout this game was the constant subs, one of which was freshman #19 Allan Gonzalez.

Allan Gonzalez was put on

in the second half and made his presence immediately by contesting every challenge and making dangerous runs down the wing.

“It comes from our culture and our teammates because as one comes out we go to back up the team” Said Allan Gonzalez when asked where his workrate comes from.

The Falcons are now over 500. for the first time this season “I mean those loses hurt but we all learn from it and our coach has told us loses are lessons,. . . hopefully we keep that winning streak going” said Reyes

The Falcons are looking to continue their momentum and stay over 500. In their next game on Sept. 20 at Taft.

for the Chargers. The Chargers still have a long season to go but in a division with a struggling Denver Broncos team with a rookie quarterback and a Raiders team they just beat it seems likely they can take an AFC wild-card spot as they most likely not win the division and take a top-four seed due to the Kansas City Chiefs being in the way.

Soon enough, Harbaugh will put this team into a position where they beat out the Chiefs for the division and make a deep run into the playoffs, winning it all bringing joy to the Chargers fans.
