Hot Summer Day: Cerritos College students sitting spaced out to avoid waiting in the sun as the commonly known shade structures offer little protection. A Notice of Completion was approved of by the Board of Ttrustees on Aug. 15, with a final cost of $1.3 million for the structures.
SHADE-DEFICIENT STRUCTURES FINISHED Carmelita Islas Mendez Managing Editor @talonmarks
The shade structures across campus are now officially finished, minus the shades, as the Notice of Completion was approved of by the Board of Trustees. The final cost of the structures and the surrounding area was of $1.3 million and was paid by the General Obligation Bond, more commonly known as the G.O. Bond, that was passed on a Nov. 2012 ballot to update the dated campus. Local companies from Ontario, Irwindale and Woodland Hills were contracted to create the structures, as well as making the waiting area decent. In a previous comment David Moore, director of physical plant and construction services, said that the shades were “not finished” and that “everyone

asks about them.” Moore hoped that the shades and its design would be approved of and that is why, he explained, the structures were being built while the approval was being processed by a state department. He said that he “never dreamed it would take this long.” Before the structures were filed as completed Moore commented that the delay was due to the Department of State Architects needing to approve the structure as well as needing to assign a contractor with the job. Moore said that waiting for the DSA has “been quite the challenge.” Tiffany Hernandez, nursing major, said while waiting to be picked up at midday, “It’s too hot to sit here in the sun. I think it would be better if there were actual shades so that it
felt cooler. She continued to say, “People would sit here more often [if shades were present]. “They would be comfortable when they wait instead of being all sweaty and being in the heat for so long.” The structures were designed with practicality in mind as well as aesthetic as about $230,000 were used to contract a landscaping company. Pierre Landscape, Inc. located in Irwindale were awarded the contract. Hernandez said, “I think the structures are nice; it makes the college look presentable.” She concluded by saying, “I think they should finish what was originally planned. It would be better for the students who come here.” Moore was unavailable for comment in relations to the completed structures.

DOWNEY CONSERVANCY GROUP CELEBRATES THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY FOR THE OLDEST MCDONALD’S Carmelita Islas Mendez Managing Editor @talonmarks
The Downey Conservancy hosted an event celebrating the 65 years of service of the oldest McDonald’s ever, located on Lakewood Boulevard. The festivities took place on location with the famous 62 feet sign of Speedee, the original mascot of the franchise, welcoming in all visitors with a big smile and pantomimed directions to the restaurant. It was a lively event where people enjoyed the food and the friends in attendance. Attendees were also greeted by the grandson of one of the original owners, Burdette “Bud” Landon. Todd Landon-Sell, Landon’s grandson, said that he was very happy to see the large crowd, but that this was not the case for many other previous anniversaries. He believes that the Downey Conservancy was the reason the event brought the attention from the city’s residents. Local news outlets, such as the Orange County Registrar and the Long Beach Press Telegram were also in attendance. Roger Williams and Bud Landon were the original owners of the franchise which opened its doors on Aug. 18, 1953, when Sell was three years old. Sell recounted a memory from his childhood and working in the kitchen, squeezing ketchup and mustard on the buns -- mustard first he expressed ardently or else the buns would get soggy. He described the story about how he told his grandmother that one day he would own the restaurant.
His grandmother said, “You better get that out of your mind right now. That could never ever ever ever happen. They’re gonna let those two old codgers [Williams and Landon] run it and then it’s going back into corporate hands.” He concluded in a melancholic tone by saying, “Where is it now? It’s back in corporate hands. There’s nothing I can do about it and it’s sad.” President of the Downey Conservancy George Redfox
also expressed the attachment to the restaurant by saying that it was important to preserve and protect the franchise because it was the “last kind of groovy-style architecture McDonald’s chain.” In addition to the event organizers, city officials were also in attendance. Rick Rodriguez, mayor pro tem for the city of Downey, was there to join in. Rodriguez also stressed on the historical importance of the building, ”I think this place has
built memory upon memory over the years … there is a lot of rich Downey history here.” Redfox also said that the place and event was ‘just great’ and that he was proud that a small celebration ‘snowballed into a big thing and it’s been good.’ Sell says that aside from the anniversaries he only comes to the location a few times a year to “check on [his] boy,” Speedee. Rodriguez said, “I hope that going forward we remember this day and to continue building
Downey’s legacy to be a strong legacy but at the same time form a rich history.” Guest speaker Charles Phoenix during his speech reminded people to be proud of Downey’s rich history, culture and architecture. He concluded by yelling to the crowd, “Paris has the Eiffel Tower. New York has the Empire State Building. Downey has this -- the oldest McDonald’s in the world, a genuine article of history!”
JASMINE MARTINEZ Long, complicated history: McDonald’s on Lakewood Boulevard celebrated its 65th year in service. It was opened on Aug. 18 1953 by Roger Williams and Burdette “Bud” Landon. Landon’s grandson was also in attendance and recounted his personal history with the restaurant.
RE-DEFINING MASCULINITY WITH EMPOWERMENT, HIP-HOP AND CRITICAL THINKING Jasmine Martinez News Editor @talonmarks
EmpowerMENt, a joint effort between English professor Damon Cagnolatti and Title IX coordinator Valyncia Raphael, will focus on leadership and consciousness for Cerritos students that identify as men. Some questions the program hopes to answer is what masculinity means to the academic journeys of students who are men and what masculinity looks like outside of toxic masculin-
ity. The initiative will incorporate elements of hiphop, with the first screening, “Beyond Beats and Rhymes,” on Sept. 18. According to Cagnolatti, it is problematic when people passively consume hip-hop and do not see it as more as a form of entertainment. He said this form of thinking relegates people and lived experiences to sound bytes and fragments of history, rather than dealing with the person as a whole.
With hip-hop themes, Cagnolatti hopes to, “Spark a conversation that can incur dialogue [and] critical thinking” around constructions of notions of masculinity with a masculine perspective. He admits that this does not mean all hip-hop is good. Addressing toxic masculinity within the program, he hopes workshops will help unpack and explain issues that surround the toxic patriarchy. Cagnolatti wants the program to teach men to
not be bystanders with issues of sexual and domestic violence, to be proactive and take initiative, in familial, social and academic spaces. Also, EmpowerMENt will focus on training men on how to hold each other accountable in terms of language and actions. On Raphael’s contribution, Cagnolatti said, “Where do [I] start? She’s been crucial, salvation to the efforts of EmpowerMENt.” “She is how this stuff happened,” Cagnolatti
finished. He said students wanted to take action on issues faced on campus, but did not know which measures to take. Cagnolatti reached out to the Cerritos College Human Resources office for support in getting men to attend the African American Male Education Network and Development. A2Mend offers resources for African American males said Cagnolatti. The conference gave them structure and institutional and anecdotal goals.

Should we condemn those in the public eye who commit criminal acts? Why? Compiled by:
Eunice Barron Staff Writer @barroneunice
SAMANTHA EDRV, POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR “The death penalty is not in deter. Publish punishment is more to set the public at ease than to keep people from committing the crime. In my opinion, some sort of punishment is necessary.”
JOSUE HIDALGO, AUTOMOTIVE MAJOR RACHEL TULLY/FREELANCE ILLUSTRATOR In a society that still praises men-famous or not, even after sexual abuse allegations, it comes as no surprise that people still turn the other cheek with these situations. Last Tuesday, the Guardian reported that more than 1,000 child victims, not including lost records and victims who have not come forward, were sexually abused by more than 300 Pennsylvania priests. Unfortunately, priests have avoided punishment for years under the protection of senior clergy members. The abusers end up being promoted or relocated instead of paying for their unforgivable crimes. These so-called men of God have the privilege of continuing their life as if they didn’t commit grave sins while their victims suffer. Earlier this month, it was also revealed that prosecutors are seeking up to three years of jail time and sex offender registration for Daniel Hernandez, otherwise known by his rapper name, Tekashi 6ix9ine. In 2015, 6ix9ine pleaded guilty to sharing a sex video of a
13-year-old girl. Unsurprisingly, the blame was put on the young girl for allegedly lying about her age by fans on Twitter. 6ix9ine tried to wipe his hands by saying he didn’t touch the girl, but was only present in the video, in which other adult men committed sexual acts while he watched. That’s still child pornography, 6ix9ine, sorry, not sorry, to break that news. People, specifically men, need to be better about holding their abusive peers and/or friends accountable for their shitty behaviors, especially against women, children and other men. Full offense, violent crimes have mostly been committed at the hands of men. That history cannot be ignored. If this strikes a nerve, do some soul searching to figure out why. Why is it that when it comes to protecting men or people’s favorite entertainers, it must be done at the sake of disregarding other people’s trauma? Perhaps some roots go back
to the almost normalization of letting relatives get away with predatory behavior. Why do grown ass adults tell their children, mainly girls, to cover up in front of their grownass male relatives? If adult men or women cannot handle being around children without having sexual thoughts, then they should not be allowed around children. Period. People also love to paint LGBTQ+ folks as predators and then go right ahead to defend their “faves.” Pedophilia isn’t a sexuality, nor is it anywhere near a component of the queer community. It’s a sickness. While they are creating fake scenarios in their heads about queer people seeking minors, real offenses, such as those committed by the Pennsylvania priests and Tekashi 6ix9ine are either overlooked or downplayed. Where’s the justice in that? 6ix9ine and the priests don’t deserve any type of forgiveness. If any God can forgive these acts so easily, then we’re better off being atheists.
“I think it is unfair especially for people like celebrities to get away with these things. I think we should all be treated the same.”
GRACIELA ESPEJO, PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR “Absolutely, they should be condemned. However, if its based on suspicions then no, it should be based on hard facts.”
CARLOS MARQUEZ, GRAPHIC DESIGN MAJOR “I do believe specifically in the catholic church that they’ve been protecting priests from being condemned or from being made responsible for criminal acts. They should be condemned no matter on your position, religion, and there is no human excuse.”
WOMEN ACTUALLY CAN BE SEX OFFENDERS, MEN CAN BE VICTIMS Bianca Martinez Editor-in-Chief @biancamart1955

Women are also capable of committing atrocious acts. Any situation involving any form of harassment, abuse and especially rape is uncomfortable, so uncomfortable that most people shutdown and are unable to react in effective manner to stop their attacker. Bianca Bitches: who asked you?
Bianca Martinez Editor-in-Chief @biancamart1955
People are not malleable creations for others to manipulate to their preference. If you don’t love your partner’s natural appearance then stop wasting their time and leave the relationship. You should never feel pressured by a partner or family member to change your physical appearance just because it doesn’t suit their unrealistic standards. Say these words aloud as you read them, “I am beautiful, I am enough and I am nobody’s personal Mrs./Mr. Potato Head.” Nobody can reach into a tub and pull out features and rearrange your appearance, so don’t let them. Your appearance is what makes you unique and sets you apart from the rest of humanity and if your partner can’t appreciate that then move on and find someone
else who does. When an individual is told they should lose weight because they look disgusting, or that they would be more attractive if they had bigger breasts, it leaves a lasting impact on their self-esteem. Women and men shouldn’t allow their partners to condition them by projecting their own ideals about appearance. You are not your partner’s property and should not allow them to treat you as such. Your partner is also not entitled to deny you the right to do whatever you wish with your body. A woman should not be denied to right to have their body tattooed just because their partner claims tattoos are too masculine. Is their masculinity that fragile that they have to project onto others? So for all those women who are not sure of how to respond to those who try to prevent you from participating in certain aspects that deem masculine, speak in a language that they’ll understand and say, “grow some balls and get over it.” Same goes for men who like manicures, face masks or want to dye their hair but their partner keeps forcing ridiculous gender roles that prevents them from doing such things. Honestly, the partner should be at peace with the fact that their
male counterpart is gentle and not one bit concerned at projecting his testosterone levels and false sense of machismo. In actuality, a partner who demands that you change their appearance for them will allow themselves to look like total garbage and won’t make the same sacrifices for you. No person is worth the emotional and physical pain. The point is ,if you don’t like your partner’s disposition and appearance, leave them alone and deal with your own insecurities instead of projecting them onto others. You are not doing your partners any favors by commenting negatively on their appearance. Instead you are deteriorating their self confidence and completely decimating the way that they view themselves. If you want to improve on your own appearance do it on your own accord, you’ll appreciate your self-growth a hell of lot more if it’s done solely for yourself. Remember, the only person you ultimately have to impress is yourself. Your body will always be with you, a partner, on the other hand, may not. Also you can sit back while your ex-partner eats shit because they couldn’t make you as insecure and miserable as they were.
Crazy Rich Asians: Hollywood’s huge milestone for rom-coms R e v i e w
Eunice Barron Staff Writer @barroneuince
One of this summer’s highly anticipated movie releases, “Crazy Rich Asians” became an important film to see, mainly for its praise as the first Hollywood studio movie in 25 years to feature and breakthrough representation of an all-Asian or Asian-American cast. The last time Hollywood had an all-Asian cast was in Wayne Wang’s 1993 film, Joy Luck Club. “Crazy Rich Asians” was insanely entertaining and humorous film, in which the actors did an amazing performance and were suitable for their character’s personalities and development. The visually stunning landscapes and the food of the country probably made everyone think twice on where to go for their next vacation. The plot followed the traditional story line of a romantic comedy. Which worked well by introducing different types of characters and most importantly giving the audience something different
to enjoy. Romantic comedies are not what they used to be. Audiences may argue that they are tired of seeing the same stories and characters in this type of film genre, but this film offers a different perspective. Today’s audiences want to see more diversity and representation of communities in Hollywood. This movie made a huge mainstream comeback for romantic comedies since the genre has been in short of decline in the past decade. Hollywood seemed to finally notice how groundbreaking it is to feature more racial representation in their films. Hollywood also seemed to realize the importance of these films especially during politically divided times. This movie is relatable for everyone who enjoys the romantic comedy genre, but also for the community it represents in which has brought the best out of it. It is truly a breath of fresh air to see something different and hopefully it gives a boost for other groups of communities to be represented, “Crazy Rich Asians” is directed by Jon M. Chu and based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 popular novel with the same name. It tells the story of a young couple, Rachel Chu, played by

‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’: the cute, sappy little tale R e v i e w
Elizabeth Corcoles A & E Editor @talonmarks
Netflix’s original film, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” is a sappy romance story with a few rough patches along the way, that delivers a rom-com. Although the film is a bit dramatic, it is worth the watch on a lazy Saturday afternoon. The film in itself has a colorful soundtrack. With tracks from Blood Orange, the Velveteins, to Wild Nothing, the series boosts a spotlight on non-mainstream artists and defer from the usual mainstream artists. Lara Jean Covey is the main character who is a junior in high school. Lara Jean is a quite, smart and poised student, who keeps to herself and feels is invisible to her classmates. It isn’t until drama starts unfolding in her life, that she realizes that she is not completely invisible. Lara Jean often fantasized about relationships and romance, more particularly, her older sister, Margot’s boyfriend, Josh. While Lara Jean and Josh had been friends since they were children, Lara Jean had never confessed her love to Josh. Her outlet was writing love letters to her crushes, five crushes in particular, and adding their appropriate address, but never mailing them out. For some time, writing and confessing her love for these boys was something Lara Jean would do in private, that is until her love letters got leaked. Which makes you think, did a part of her want the letters to get out? It was a part of her being unafraid and wanting to experience love for herself. Of the five boys Lara Jean had at some point had crushes on, three of them received letters. Josh, her older sister’s soon to
be ex-boyfriend. Peter, the boy she kissed in 7th grade, but is now the boyfriend of her arch nemesis, Genevieve. And lastly, Lucas, the boy she went to homecoming with, but came out as gay. While Lara Jean got let down gently by Lucas and Peter, she was petrified as to what Josh would say. Although, Josh and Margot had split up, since Margot was heading off to college in Scottland, the thought of betraying her older sister, did not sit well with her. Avoiding Josh like a plague, Lara Jean is faced with the dilemma of coming clean with the truth, or creating an elaborate plan to make sure Josh never finds out about her true feelings for him. And like Josh, Peter had recently been dumped by his girlfriend, Genevieve. Of course, this would not be a dramatic rom-com if Lara Jean had not chosen the complex plan, right? Which is when Peter and Lara Jean decide to be each other’s pawn. Lara Jean was Peter’s pawn to make Genevieve jealous and to his hope, that she would take him back. Peter, was the pawn to make Josh believe that the letter he received held no meaning. As unrealistic as the fake dating gets, the film holds its entertainment value and does not get boring. The film has the typical mean girl interaction with the story line of Lara Jean and Genevieve once being the best of friends. Which leads to the film being predictable to some extent and unoriginal. Nonetheless, the film is a delightful watch and depicts the life of a teenage girl with a strong family support system. “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” is definitely worth the watch, but only if you’re bored on a lazy saturday afternoon. As well as being a cute romcom that holds its entertainment value without having to go Rated R, like other teenage films.

Matt Groening’s most recent attempt to distance himself from “The Simpson’s,” with Netflix original “Disenchantment” proved unsuccessful. “Disenchantment” is presented in a generic medieval setting, with the standard “rebellious teenager fears monotony” theme. With Princess Bean as the rebellious teen, voiced by Abbi Jacobson, we are met with her lifestyle of booze, drugs, implied sexual activity and depression jokes. As in any adventure comedy, there must always be the sidekicks, in this case it is a demon and an elf that too suspiciously resembles Groening’s previous creation, Bart Simpson. Everyone, become immediately disappointed when it is realized that the demon is not voiced by Bill Murray, but is in fact voiced by Eric Andre, but then become somewhat appeased with the demon’s, Luci, Benderesque attitude. Elfo, voiced by Nat Faxon, attributes Fry from “Futurama” as the elf immediately falls in love with Bean, and fails to effectively express his love for her and therefore constantly finds himself in the friendzone. Speaking of similarities, Groening obviously spared no expense in creativity as “Disenchantment” is essentially a rehashed version of “Futurama,”

with similar plotlines, animation design, variety of characters and even some of same voice actors from “Futurama.” Princess Bean’s characterization falls short in the first half of the season as her potential level of badassery is hardly showcased. The standard plotline is introduced, Bean grew up without a mother, whom she misses dearly. Queen Dagmar, Princess Bean’s mother, is an obvious plot-twist archetype, a well revered public figure with the potential of becoming evil. The show is comprised of one-liners and a few novelty gags, very quintessential Matt Groening, however, this is not enough to make up for the mediocrity of the show’s plotline and theme. Although back stories of both Elfo and Bean were explored, it wasn’t delivered in an effective manner to keep the audience invested in the first place. As the character’s don’t necessarily possess personalities the audience can relate to. With “Disenchantment” pos-
Summer is over, now what? Elizabeth Corcoles A & E Editor @talonmarks
Summer has come to an unofficial end as classes are back in session, but you didn’t get to do as many fun activities as you thought you would. As some of us spent the summer working and some of us lounging at home, summer passed us all by oh so quickly. But we don’t all have the funds to attend festivals or to buy tickets for Mac Miller’s new tour, so here are some free/cheap events in Los Angeles county to attend this weekend before we really have to get our head in the game. A good place to start your adventure is the Broad museum in Downtown Los Angeles. The Broad museum is a beautiful exhibition of art that includes pop-up art, contemporary art
and the “Infinity Mirror” room. The highlight of this museum is the “Infinity Mirror” room that projects lights onto an entire room made of mirrors. Entry is free, although it is recommended to reserve tickets, which are also free.
sessing so many mirrored aspects of “Futurama,” one is better off rewatching “Futurama” for the effortless irreverent adventures, classic running gags and an endless onslaught of on-the-nose jokes. “Disenchantment” fell short in delivering originality, constant humor and a kick-ass female lead character. True to most adult American animation, there is no character development throughtout the series, though it is implied. The series is essentially a way to pass the time. The novelty of a pg-13 rated debauchery can only be amusing for so long before the audience can become disinterested and use the animated series as background noise while they surf Instagram or Tumblr. As an animated series to watch from time-to-time when you just need that safe dose of cartoon antics, that isn’t Disney-fied, or with the same level of raunchiness as “Big Mouth,” “Disenchantment” is the perfect fit. Other cool nearby events is the La Brea Tar Pits museum. The museum is hosting Late Night Fridays, offering documentaries, behind-the-scenes tours and live excavations. Summer movie nights are also an option, as well as being free, the movies being played are pleasantly delightful. Venues included are: • • •

This year’s Video Music Award’s brought abrupt drama and top performances proving the VMA’s still holds the title of music “wildest” night. The 2018 VMA’s was held at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Aug. 20. Cardi B opened up the award show playing a trick to all viewers at home that she would “reveal” her baby daughter, Kulture, only to reveal a moon man award wrapped up in a blanket. Followed by Cardi B, were presenters Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. Jennifer Lopez was honored her first award, the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, the highest award an artist can receive. Lopez’s performing hits like, “Jenny from the Block,” “On the Floor,” and “I’m Real,” with special guest Ja Rule. Also making news is Camila Cabello, who was nominated for five awards this year and successfully took two home. Both being one of the top categories including, “Artist of the Year, “ and “Video of the Year,” for her hit-single “Havana.” Before the night started, comedian Tiffany Haddish made a joke about Camila’s exbandmates from Fifth Harmony saying, “So those of you watching at home, hi Fifth Harmony.” Camila respectfully shook her head in disagreement toward the joke. Cardi B made her imprint on Brewery might be an activity for you. The Silverlake flea market might be something to consider as well, seeing as you could get cheap items, not spend as much moolah and keep your hipster vibe afloat. And for the foodies, the Ice Cream Alley at Smorgasburg in L.A. would be the place for you to hit. Another place to consider is the DTLA Proud Festival at Pershing Square. The returning festival offers a variety of food trucks, live music and diversity in the LGTBQ+ community with only a small fee of $10. LATINAfest is also a festival to consider. This festival consists of female empowerment, self-defense classes, live music, yoga classes and more. And the best event of all, the Dog Days of Summer at the Hammer Museum. With 2018 being the year of the
the music industry and made sure to tell everyone she’s here to stay by winning the “Artist of the Year” award. Presenter Millie Bobby Brown even did her own impression of Cardi B, when giving her the moon man. Singer Post Malone took home, “Song of the Year” for his song, “Rockstar” with 21 Savage. One artist who did not win a moon man award this year, but made sure to deliver an emotional and powerful performance was rapper Logic, wearing a black tee that read, “F*** the Wall,” during his song, “One Day.” The rapper even brought out parents to reunite with their children after being taken away due to immigration acts. It is clear to say the 2018 VMA’s was everyone’s night. From powerful performances, fashion statements and drama the VMA’s will always live up to music “wildest” night. It was clearly a tough competition due to all nominees being excellent artists, but overall it was nothing but love and appreciation for every artist.

After 24 seasons of coaching as an assistant alongside the legendary Frank Mazzotta, Dean Grosfeld has been named head coach of Falcons' football. Grosfeld will be entering his 25th overall season, his first as head coach, but will still be entitled to his previous coaching positions, as offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach. "It's very hard... having to pick up all that slack is very hard, but I have to give a lot of credit to my staff," Grosfeld said. He continued, "Someone from the outside would've had a hard time doing that, but since I've been here and I've been involved in it then I think that transitions a little easier." Not only did Grosfeld assist Mazzotta throughout more than half of his coaching career at Cerritos College, but also played under Mazzotta in 1990-91. Grosfeld to this day holds the single-game record for most passing yards with 388 yards against Mt. San Antonio College in 1991.
"Coach Mazzotta was always a father figure to all of us that have played... I'm not even going to attempt to step into his shoes," Grosfeld said. Mazzotta coached at Cerritos College for 40 years and Grosfeld only hopes to continue the legacy of building character within the players on the roster. He continued, "We're gonna create what this place should be and what he always wanted this place to be, and that's a champion and being at the top level." Grosfeld is not trying to fill his shoes in any way, because he says that would be impossible. "I understand following him because no one knows it better... so I know what he instilled in a positive way and I will continue to build on that," Grosfeld said. Grosfeld continued, "I would stay here as long as they'll ever have me, I would not go anywhere... I've been here for 24 years, if I can retire here that would be my dream." Grosfeld explained how in junior college football, people spend so much time on talent, that they forget about making the player a whole rounded person. The Cerritos College football

team is coming back from 3-7 overall season. "We're very young, but we're very talented. The core group that we have back is very good... we have a tight little nucleus surrounded by a really big group of young kids," Grosfeld said. Wrestling confident for state championship win Carlos Ruiz Sports Editor @thecarlosruiz
The Falcon wrestlers are training hard, heading into the new season on the hunt for glory. Head coach Don Garriott has led the team into the top four spots for the state championship in the past four seasons. Garriott said, "Our goal is to win the conference, win the regional and win the state every year, that never changes." The Falcons' wrestling team are following up on the previous Fall 2017 season where they settled for runner-up in the California Community College Athletic Association Team Dual State Championship and fourth place in the CCCAA State Championship. With a handful of sophomores, the core of this team is surrounded by freshmen. A freshmen core is something Garriott is looking forward to this upcoming season "I'm excited to get into competition in a month to see where they're [freshmen] at, what I'm seeing in the room right now is great they have a lot of fight in em'," Garriott said. Garriott admits his team is not prepared at the moment for the first tournament, but will be prepared when the day comes. Garriott continued, "That's not really what we're shooting for, we use those as barometers of where we're at... We just want to get them ready to compete that first tournament."
since the 2015 post season. "They're gonna be very good, but our kids are gonna come to play against them," he said. The team is going to just take it one week at a time this season, they are focusing on the now rather than eyeing the end of the season. Despite having a very tough schedule, Grosfeld is confident

With so many bodies on the team to coach, Garriott has no trouble at all when it comes to managing so many wrestlers because he has great help on his side. Freshman Roland Dominguez came to Cerritos College following his high school career at Downey High where he won the California Interscholastic Federation championship as a junior. Dominguez feels good and confident for the upcoming season, his reason in choosing Cerritos College came down to the wrestling program. "It's close to home and I know they have a good program here, so I wanted to see what I had to offer," Dominguez said. Sophomore Nick Camacho is moving toward his last wrestling season, previously taking fifth place at the CCCAA State Championship his first year. Individually, Camacho knows
he has a lot to work on this upcoming season, but is willing to put in the time to possibly take the State Championship this year. Camacho said, "It's definitely possible, I just have to keep the grind up. There are other really good wrestlers out there, but you gotta put in the work, so things can happen my way when the time comes." Sophomore Zack Gonzalez is also training for his last season at Cerritos College, after taking seventh place at CCCAA State Championships his freshman year. Gonzalez has set the goal this season of trying to obtain the individual and team state title. "I think it deserves to be back here at Cerritos, we've been working hard for it," Gonzalez said. The Cerritos College wrestling team has their first tournament Sep. 8 at Bakersfield Duals.
the team can compete with the teams they're facing this season. "You would be lying if you didn't say your first team ever wouldn't be remembered forever," said Grosfeld referring to his first year as head coach. He ended with, "It's not about me, it's about we, but I'll always remember it as my first football team for sure."
After going 2-20 the previous year, women's volleyball are searching for a better season outcome. Head coach Kari Hemmerling is excited to go into the season with the options she's been giving, she's set small goals as small as getting 1 percent better every day. Hemmerling is excited to hop into the new season with the team almost doubling in size. Last season there were only 10 players to the team, this time around Hemmerling has eight more players to work around. "Last season, we had what we had, there wasn't much wiggle room and practices didn't get too competitive, just because there weren't that many people to compete with for a spot," Hemmerling said. The team has seven returning sophomores and the core of the team is made up of freshmen. Hemmerling believes with the team depth it creates competition for players who want a starting position. "This year everyone is working a little bit harder, 'Shoot, she's playing really well. Man I gotta step it up.', so it's creating a good practice environment. Everyone
has to be dialed in," Hemmerling said. The team most recently played in a scoreless scrimmage tournament hosted at Cerritos College on Aug. 17. Hemmerling took this tournament as an opportunity to create lineups and was given the chance to see what teammates work better together. "We had an opportunity to try seven, eight, nine different lineups, so you see who works well with who and who steps up," Hemmerling said. The season is right around the corner and Hemmerling says the team is gonna have to be ready.

Women's water polo is off to a promising start while the men’s water polo team is looking lost in the deep end. A minor physical altercation erupted between two Falcon teammates, freshman utility Brent Buchan and sophomore utility Dylan Sun, during a team scrimmage. Heading into this season men's head coach Joe Abing said, “Feels good. New team; a lot of new faces, strong returners. We have a lot of work to do, but we are off
to a good start to training.” Last season the men were 1613 overall and 4-3 in conference. Women's head coach Sergio Macias is very excited for the season as he feels that they can still make a run for the conference title and hopefully make a deep run into the playoffs. Women's water polo is coming back from an overall 13-12 regular season record and a 8-3 conference record. Sophomore goalie Dulce Medina said, "The team is working really hard, getting along and has really shown we want to win this year." When asked if the team was ready for the Golden West
tournament on Sep. 8-9, Abing mentioned they are not ready for the tournament and the team has a lot of work to do. Freshman driver Rodrigo Baca said, “We have good communication with everybody and as long as we talk to each other, I think we will go pretty far at the end of the season.” Sophomore driver Jake Evans said, “I think we have a chance with the chemistry that we have going now to take it a lot further and potentially take ourselves to the state championship.” Both Evans and Baca mentioned how they can help improve the teams play this season "communication and playing as a
unit and not as individuals." Women's polo this season is working with an almost true freshman roster. The team will play their season opener away against Los Angeles Trade Tech Sep. 5. Heading into the first game for the women, Macias feels that its very early in the season so neither team is going to play very sharp. After the opener, the team will have a rest day then head up to Morro Bay High School for the Cuesta tournament Sept. 8-9. Macias feels that after this tournament the team will have a much better idea where the they are at in terms of performance.
Cross Country eyeing top spot in conference Carlos Ruiz Sports Editor @thecarlosruiz
The cross country team is closing in on the new season, with both sides placing in top 15 in the State Championships last season. Cerritos College cross country will host three important meets this season, the Southern California Meet, the South Coast Conference Championships and the Southern California Championships at Don Knabe Community Regional Park. The last time Cerritos College hosted a major cross country meet was in 2011. Along with the responsibilities of hosting the championship meets, the team has set goals of doing well in conference. The men's side have five returning sophomores with a nucleus of freshmen, the team is

large in size. Head coach Bryan Ramos said, "On the men's side we've got a lot more talent, we're deeper this year. We have a lot of local talents." Sophomore Jamal Awad is one of this season's captains, along with sophomore Adrian Casas. Both runners are hoping to lead the men's side to many victories this coming season. Awad said, "It's hard, keeping a big team under control, but with [each other's help] and the coaches we can be better." Casas feels really good about the size of the men's team and the relationships the runners have already built together. The women's team have two returning sophomores and five incoming freshmen. "We don't have the numbers, training them is going to be a little bit different because we're not a high mileage team," Ramos

said. The women's focus this season, according to Ramos, is the team's strength and not the mileage. Freshman Vanesa Garcia said, "My hope for this season is to qualify to state... we look strong and solid, so I wanna go as far as possible." Sophomore Monica Bautista is returning for her last season,

and is hoping to be one of the top girls this season. "We have a job, to lead the girls, set a good example and motivate them, but we're not here to be above them," said Bautista on being named one of the captains this season. The Cerritos College soccer teams are ready for the 2018 season, and want to win the State and National Championship this time. Both teams won their South Coast Conference titles respectively. Cerritos men's soccer was eliminated in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. The women's team were eliminated in a third round game after a 1-0 defeat against Santa Barbara City College. Coaches Ruben Gonzalez and Benjamin Artiaga have one goal in mind: win as many games as possible to accomplish their goal. Gonzalez said, "We want to win a championship... if we do not win a championship it is a failure." Women's soccer aren't taking anything for granted this season, because of their defeat in a third round playoff match last season. Defender Brianna Yepez said that the team can get to the postseason, win the conference title and the squad is ready to obtain their goal. Another key player according to Gonzalez for 2018 will be freshman America Ontiveros, however she is injured and may not be on the field for the first games of this campaign. Cerritos men's soccer team despite ending undefeated 10-0-7 did not win the State Championship; the team was eliminated in the Semifinals after a penalty shootout loss against Taft College. Artiaga stated that the team needs to score in the first 15 to 30 minutes of their games this season. Their goal is to win a fourth State Championship this season. In a few words, the men's soccer team will not take ball possession lightly in order to get its wins. One of the key players for the men's team for this season is sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Aldama, who will be a strong keeper according to Artiaga; Aldama made 78 saves in 2017. The Cerritos men and women soccer teams are expected to be the conference winners in 2018, but its objective is to win the state or national championship.
