CITYNESS IS NOT SIMPLY DENSITY.

CITYNESS IS A SET OF CONDITIONS, A SET OF POSSIBILITIES T PEOPLE TO MAKE A HISTORY, TO MAKE A CULTURE, TO BE CO - SASKIA SASSEN

THAT ENABLE ONTESTATARIANS.

With my work i try to understand immanent potentials of people in their usage of space. I want to learn from their everyday knowledge and find common visions. As a designer i want to use my capabilities to transform these ideas into strategies and projects. I want to support contestatarians.

THINK TANK OBERES HAUSFELD Participatory Urban Design Process Superwien · transform city · NEST · Why. 2016/2017 · Vienna (Austria) www.hausfeld.city

“Oberes Hausfeld” in the north of Vienna will be a modern, urban and lively new neighborhod for about 8,500 inhabitants. The new part of the city is envisiones with mixed use functions and urban diversity. The “Think Tank Oberes Hausfeld” deals with the programming of the plinth zone at an early stage of the planning process. The right mix of uses for the neighborhood has to be found. In a dialog-oriented development process, the programming is developed collectively and experimentally. Existing networks in the city are identified, “early bird users” found and an initial activation as well as long-term use concept developed. New economic models emerge apart from the mainstream. That way Oberes Hausfeld is already an experimental field for innovative urban ideas.

The vision of a lively, mixed-use neighborhood with open spaces to experiment.

“Early Bird Users” are activating the plinth zones of the new neighborhod.

“Form Follows User” is a dialog-orientated planning process to involve social networks at an early stage.

The design of the new urban development is coordinated with the requirements of users.

METROLAB SERENA · COQUIMBO Participatory Urban Design Process Inter-American Development Bank · Urban Design Lab · Vienna University of Technology 2015/2016 · La Serena, Coquimbo (Chile) www.urbandesignlab.org

URBAN DESIGN · 2

The processes that mark socio-territorial development of the conurbation La Serena-Coquimbo are characterized by fast demographic growth and expansion in surface. The strategy of the Metrolab is based on the opportunities provided by elements of landscape in the bay of Coquimbo and the communities that are involved in these spaces to contribute to the reversion processes of residential segregation and fragmentation of natural habitats. The Metrolab took the opportunity to intervene the relationship between landscape and neighborhoods, identifying strategic borders, in order to achieve greater impacts of social integration, public spaces, biodiversity and quality of life.

Intervene the relationship between landscape and neighborhods by identifying strategic borders.

During the workshops a territorial matrix of elements of landscape was developed.

Provide access to natural aereas to improve quality of people’s life, while at the same time protect biodiversity and rise awareness.

COLLICO LAB Participatory Urban Design Process Inter-American Development Bank · Urban Design Lab · Vienna University of Technology 2015 · Valdivia (Chile) www.urbandesignlab.org

URBAN DESIGN · 3

The UDL project in Valdivia, Chile, was working in Collico, a postindustrial district in the suburbia of the city. The neighborhood suffered a lot of changes due to restructuring of productional proceses. The urban dynamics changed, but Collico preserved its attributes of an industrial identity and it’s social structure. In a participatory design process, simple interventions were proposed to upgrade the district, while preserving it’s human scale and social structures. The focus of the urban strategy is on the two linear centralities, the waterfront and the abandoned train track as well as on an abandoned site between them. For this abandoned site a park with mixed public functions was designed. A route for a touristic heritage walk in the former industrial neighborhood got defined.

The urban strategy focuses on two linear centralities, the waterfront and the abandoned abandoned train track.

The riverfront gives the neighborhood it’s identity. It only needs small interventions, providing easier access and protected areas to swim.

The “silo parque” is named after the abandoned silo, which is an important point of identification for the neighbors.

URBAN INTERVENTION 路 1

The Quito Urban Lab was a short term Urban Lab during Habitat III conference. In the neighborhod of La Mariscale a white cube was built. Neighbors, conference visitors, students and local politicians were invited to join the Lab. After only one week of time the white cube was filled with work and ideas.

KAFFEE SUD Urban Activation Kaffee Sud · Paradocks 2014 · Vienna (Austria) http://www.paradocks.at/onorthodox/

Kaffee Sud is a mobile coffee brew bar. It was designed for the temporary use project “Packhaus” by Paradocks, Marxergasse, Vienna. The mobile bar animates different zones of the former office building and it’s urban surroudings, finds new interpretations for non-places and reacts flexibly to different use situations. It is an activator for space, a meeting and comunication point. Coffee is used as a tool for interaction between people and an atractor to discover unknown spaces.

FIRE STATION LEOPOLDSTADT Architectural Design · Competition (2nd prize) Feld 72 Architects 2014 · Vienna (Austria) www.feld72.at

The metal facade is an allusion to swaths of smoke.

The new fire station fuses sensitively into the urban architectural situation and distinctly demarcates the block boundaries with an elongated, bar-like structure across a type of courtyard. The division into socle and the elongated structure reflects a clear principle of organisation. The zones and sequences are optimally connected and ensure efficiency and orientation in case of action. Windows and openings provide views into the inner courtyard, making the fire brigade and its procedures visible as an institution. The bronze-coloured metal façade conjures up an interesting visual interplay, evoking associations of diffuse swaths of smoke. -feld72

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN · 1

Particular openings in important points of the facade open the institution to the public life of the city.

Protected courtyards provide the apropriate privacy.

RESIDENCE LADINIA Architectural Design Feld 72 Architects 2014 · Vienna (Austria) · St. Ulrich (Italy) www.feld72.at

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN · 2

It is envisaged as a building of timeless elegance with a strong regional association. Here, the aspiration is to interweave, with utmost sensibility, the ambitious spatial programme of a total of approx. 26,000 m2 into the context of a protected ensemble. A building perceived as three different units on the one hand continues the village dimension, on the other gives scope to the urban architectural configuration, as well as to picturesque views through houses and wider prospects so typical of the village centre. The multi-layered ensemble generates public space. The ground floor zone with bar, terraces and shops proceeds in smooth transition to the pedestrian precinct, a high-quality social situation inviting people to meet and linger. -feld72

To continue the village dimension, the building is perceived as three units.

The fragmentation of the built volume generates different types of rooms with panoramic views into the landscape.

With sensibility the building is integrated in the picturesque ensemble of the village.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH

1 · Santiago Común 2 · Berlin Smart City 3 · Underground City

SANTIAGO COMÚN Master Thesis Vienna University of Technology · Pontifica Universidad Catolica de la Madre y Maestra 2015/2016 · Santiago de los Caballeros (Dominican Republic) The work „Santiago Común … Looking for Common Ground. A Process of Reclaiming Cityness in Santiago de los Caballeros,“ is dealing with a socially segregated city, which is on its way of losing Common Ground.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH · 1

The historic city center, traditionally the most significant public area of urban life, is in crisis. Due to social segregation and decentralization, it fell into a downward spiral, lost its role in the urban context and has been marginalized. „Santiago Común“ understands the described crisis as a potential to find a new identity for the part of the city which contains the highest concentration of cultural heritage. In this process, different planning principles are being combined. The goal is to involve different stakeholders of the city that can continue with the processes of revitalization on a long term. People are not the audience in urban processes, but become co-creators.

The masterplan gives a flexible framework in which a variety of actions influence each other.

The “Incubator Zone” as potential area to start small scale, short-term actions to initiate the process of reclaiming the center.

“Catalyzers of Cityness” are hubs of urban diversity.

“Micro Urban Activators” empower peple to become co-creaters in the definition of urban space.

BERLIN SMART CITY Academic Project Prof. Raoul Bunschoten · TU Berlin · Metropolitan Utilities Dialogue · Climate-KIC 2013 · Berlin (Germany) www.chora.org The project was one part of an overall proposal for the Senate Department for Urban Development and Environment of Berlin. By exploring political, economical, social and cultural conditions “Urban Incubators” were designed. The project was dealing with choreography and co-evolution of urban neighborhods towards low carbon city quarters. By combining “Urban Incubators” in a complex way, new proposals where made.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH · 2

This project was about the recent trend of “fast fashion” and the problem of textile waste. These topics were combined with urban challenges of visual pollution, noise disturbance, heat islands, diaper waste and car parking spaces to come up with new proposals how to recyle textile waste within the city.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH · 3

The project “Underground City” describes a new form of settlement, which represents a symbiosis between densified housing and agricultural production. Housing happens underground, while on the surface agricultural land is maintained. Only a minimum of natural surface gets lost for bringing natural light to the city. It is the vision for an agricultural experimental-city, where high-quility living and optimized agricultural production come together in a new form of experimental urbanity. The densified settlements are distrubuted according to the field structure. This agricultural city is supposed to be a prototype for densified rural settlements.
