ABOUT American student studying architectural engineering abroad at Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I’ve actually been living abroad for a little over 20 years. I’ve been interested in the design of spaces around me since I was in middle school but I wasn’t aware of architecture as a career path, at the time. International Connections Academy, my high school, was the most influential in putting me on the architecture career path. My high school counselor introduced me to a career test that identified architecture as the perfect match for me as a creative and hard-working leader. I hold high expectations for my own success. Before starting college, a gap year allowed me to look into architecture as a career and lifestyle. I attended many webinars and listened to architecture students and professionals around the world talk about their daily experiences. I even took the initiative of interviewing the previous head of the Architectural Engineering Department at Prince Sultan University, Dr. Jane Greenwood, AIA, before applying to the university. These steps provided me with valuable information about the essentials for a prosperous architecture career. I am a self-motivated and professional communicator who works well with teams. In 5-10 years, I see myself providing creative, sustainable, and comfortable spaces for people. I’d also like to be a member of multiple architecture organizations including the American Institute for Architecture Students (AIAS) and eventually the AIA. My interest in current global issues, especially climate change, will inform my designs as an architect.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL MACHINE NET ZERO CUBE

Design a 6x6x6 cube that is an environmental response to regional environmental constraints and characteristic features of a Saudi Arabian region; Al Jouf. The project should be a scientific approach to propose a reliable design rather than aesthetic considerations. The idea was to design a structure for eating and sitting that respected the existing site. The site is covered with trees local to the region including date palm trees and olive trees. The structure is raised off of the ground to mimic the trees around it and to create a better microclimate for visitors. 3 A103

The design process was 3. Case Study Analysis: developed with following Envelope system, steps: Microclimate, Apertures, Energy 1. Regional Research: terrain, climate, historical 4. Design context and architecture, local materials, 5. Environemental Analysis soil (Solar, Shadows) 2. Site Analysis: Existing terrain and vegetation, wind, Sun

Eco strategies Innovative approaches 1. Facade is designed to mimic the openings/ spacing between the trees. More gaps to the north to maximize good daylight without overheating building and little to no gaps to South to reduce extreme heat. 2. Use of local materials: Dolomite bricks and local glass with silica sand 3. Open floor plan for flexibility in use of space 4. Building orientation to North, coolest side of site

8

5. Raised structure: creates a cool outdoor space for visitors under building 6. Sustainable water and waste energy system 7. Use of Biomass and PV energy systems for sustainability

02 THE OFFICE BUILDING CONTEMPORARY | SUSTAINABLE Design a contemporary profile of an architectural sustainable company. Provide spaces with flexibility, social support, and technology to promote new ways of working, learning, and engaging for 30 employers including a manager, senior principal architects, drafts-men, secretary, HR employees, and accounting unit and public users (clients, stakeholders…).

The concept was to design an office that separated the spaces for working, meeting, and socializing. In addition, the structure was to be designed in a way that provided a comfortable outdoor courtyard/space despite the hot climate by

10

providing shading elements that were part of the building design and local vegetation.

design process: 1. Case Study Analysis: Group effort; I was responsible for analyzing the site for 2 case studies 2. Site Analysis: Group effort; I was responsible for analyzing some building regulations (building height, land use, and site occupancy) 3. Ideation with sketches 4. Design.

1. Shaded courtyard and outdoor spaces with local vegetation Innocative approaches: 2. Shading devices integrated with building design 3. Accessible Design with ramps and elevators 4. Underground parking for protection from heat and max. use of land for the office and outdoor space

03 MASHA CAFE MISK ART GALLERY This is a renovation of the Misk Institution’s art gallery cafe. The cafe is part of a space on the lower level of the art gallery where artists can meet, read, paint, attend workshops, etc. This area is called ‘Masaha’ which means ‘Space’. The existing cafe is dull with little lighting and doesn’t represent an artist’s space, according to the client. The client wants a well-lit space that offers artists at the gallery a place to take a break and get inspired; as well as buy a few necessary art tools.

The concept: Desert Sunset: Respecting the city/ terrain the project is located in; Riyadh city which is a desert. The colors and design of the cafe are inspired by the desert; neutral/warm colored floor (sand), orange and yellows for portion of the walls (sunset), and blue/cool color

18

for walls and ceiling (sky). Design Process: 1. Research: small cafe’s with little to no windows, artist spaces 2. Ideation and rough sketching 3. Design 4. Moodboard

Innovative solutions 1. Use of window-looking mirrors to make space appear larger and more open 2. Adding low-maintenance plants to liven the space up and improve air quality 3. Use of white for upper portion of wall and for the ceiling to blend wall and ceiling, thus making the space appear larger 4. Use of orange/yellow for lower portion of wall instead of white since

22

the lower part of the wall is exposed to human contact 5. Placing vegetation behind seating and in front of window to maximize natural light exposure for the plants 6. Use of low-maintennce plants 7. Moveable tables and seating for flexibility
