My 9th birthday At last! It is my birthday; I am so excited for it. “Happy birthday to you!� everyone wished me in the morning. My birthday is on Christmas day. I brought a packet of chocolates to my school to celebrate my birthday. In school, everyone wished me. We even celebrated Christmas. When I reached home, my mom told me to close my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I saw that the living room was fully decorated. In the evening, I cut the cake. The day was exciting. On my winter holidays, I went to Pokhara. I celebrated my belated birthday in Pokhara as well and had lots of fun. I read books, watched cartoons and travelled some places.
Exams After my winter vacation, since my exams were coming near, I prepared for the exam. The first exam was Science. The questions were easy. The next exam was English. It took me some more time to finish the exam. The next exam was Nepali and it was fine. We even had our Computer exam that day. The Computer exam is only the exam which had 25 marks. Other papers had 50 marks. Next was Social Studies and the last exam was Maths. After some days, it was our result. I got A+ in all subjects. Everyone congratulated me. I was promoted to Grade 4 with my name listed in honor roll!

A long vacation After my results, my vacation started. It was a long vacation. I went to Pokhara with my mom. It was fun. I celebrated Holi and went to Syangja district to see ‘Bhaalu Pahara’. The next day I bought 4 books .I watched television and played with my small brother Shrayan. I even played games on my Kindle. I went shopping at Bhat Bhateni shopping mall. I was really enjoying the vacation. But I had a feeling something bad is going to happen soon.
Strange sound One night, at 9:20, when I went to sleep, I heard a whisper. But I didn’t pay attention and fell asleep. After some hours I suddenly woke up. I was woken up by a scream. I looked into my watch. It was exactly 12:00. In the morning, I told this incident to everyone. But no one believed me. Now what would I do to make everyone believe me!
A trip to the jungle The next day, we planned to go to the jungle. I was excited. In the afternoon, we went to a dense forest. It was little scary. After an hour, I felt hungry. So we all started eating. Just then I heard a loud scream. “What was that?”I said.

“We don’t know” everyone said. After a while some polices came. One of them asked me, “Did you hear a scream?” “Yes.” I said. Then we also followed them.
A murder When we reached there, a man was having a bottle in his hands and a knife in his chest. Somebody killed him. He was dead. The police took some pictures, looked around and carried the dead body away. “Are you the one who saved the whole world from the haunted houses?” said one of the police. ”Yes, I saved the world from the haunted houses.” I said. “So would you become a detective in this case” said the police. “Ok.”I said, “But I need an assistant.” “Fine.” the police said.
I became a detective The next day, I got ready for my job. First when I reached the jungle, I saw a man over there. “Who are you?” I asked. “I am your assistant, my name is TT.” he said “My name is Sanshray. Now you go and get some information about that man and I will find the murder weapon.”I said

The investigation My assistant, TT, went to search whereas I walked around the jungle to find the murder weapon and other evidence. Then I remembered something. I saw the murder weapon when I reached the murder spot when I was travelling the jungle. But I can’t remember where. And TT was still searching the victim’s personal information. Finally, he found the person’s home. He noted some important information. Then he came back to the jungle.
Some important information I asked TT what information he has brought. TT started reading, “His name is GB. He was 22 and he was a good man. He had 7 relatives and among them one is little evil and he had one enemy.” “Now TT, you go and find that enemy and talk to him and I will go and find that little evil relative and will talk with him” I said. “Ok” TT told.
An enemy and a relative The next morning, I searched everywhere around Pokhara and finally found the relative’s house. It was large and dirty. I knocked the door. “Is anyone here?” I said. Then the door was opened. “Who are you?” the man asked. “I am Sanshray. Do you know GB?” I told.

“Yes, Why?” the man said, puzzled. “He is dead. I am a detective in this case.”I said “What? He’s dead? I didn’t know about it.” the man was puzzled. “He did not know about it.” I thought. So I left. And finally, TT also found the enemy’s home. “Is anyone there?” TT yelled. TT waited but no one came out. The door was locked from outside so he left.
The suspects Again the next day, we reached the murder place. “Now this time, we need to find and talk with GB’s family, friends and also relatives. We will note some important information that they say. In 3 days, we will have to collect all information” I said. And then we went. I found GB’s home. Then I phoned TT. “I have found GB’s home.” I said. “I have found a friend of GB.” TT said. I went to GB’s house. I knocked the door. After a while, a lady opened the door. “Who are you?” the lady said.

“I am Sanshray. I am a detective in GB’s case” I said. “What! He’s dead. He had gone camping for a week.” the lady was surprised. And then I talked with her for some more time. In 3 days, I visited many houses. I filled a whole diary. TT also wrote many information. “I went to so many houses but none of the people looked scared and evil.” I said. “Same happened with me.” TT said. “Now tomorrow we will again search for the murder weapon.” I said. “Ok.” TT told.
We found the murder weapon The next day, we again went to the jungle. “TT, you search the murder weapon in the western and the eastern side of the jungle and I will search in the northern and the southern side.” I said. “Ok.” TT told. And then we started searching for it. We searched and searched and searched but we couldn’t find the murder weapon. All of a sudden, I spotted something. I went nearer and found a weapon. It was a knife with blood and a bottle filled with poison. Then I called TT. “Look! I have found a poison bottle and a knife with poison. I saw these things in the murder spot where GB was killed. But I have also seen these things somewhere else. But I can’t remember.” I said. “Can I see it? I haven’t seen these things.” TT said.

“Now we will investigate in the night. Send the knife to find the finger prints” I said. “Ok.” TT said.
Investigation in the night Later in the night, we again met at the jungle. “We will not investigate for a long time. We will just investigate for 1 hour.” I said. And we started to investigate. I switched on my torch and gave another one to TT. 40 minutes past but we didn’t find anything. “It has been a long time but we didn’t find anything.” TT said. “Now we shall return to our home.” I said. “Ok.” TT said. Just as we were about to return, I heard a footsteps and turned around saw someone. “TT, someone is over here.” I whispered. Just then the person ran away.
The murderer is caught We also ran after the person. The person ran very fast. I couldn’t catch the person as I was already tired. But TT was running to catch the person. I stopped and called the police.

The police came after 10 minutes. The person was still running and TT was still chasing that person. Then suddenly the police came from the opposite direction and caught that person. “Who are you?” the police said. “I am ER.” the man said. “Did you kill GB?” asked the police. “No, I didn’t.” said ER. “But we found the murder weapon.” I said. “We took each and everyone’s finger prints and it is your finger prints have been found in those two murder weapons.” the police said. “Oh, so you guys found the murder weapon. That’s good, but I am not the murderer.” said ER. “You are the murderer.” I said. ER realized that he made a mistake coming to the jungle and accepted that he killed GB. “Yes, I killed him.” said ER. “Why did you kill him?”I said. “I took Rs.1 million from him and didn’t want to pay him back.” ER said. “Are you the little evil relative whom I met?” I said. “Yes, you guessed it right.” said ER. “Now you two come in the court exactly at 12 pm.” said the police. “Ok.” TT and I told together. Then the police put handcuff on ER’s hands and put him on the jeep.

The case is solved!!! The next morning, I told everyone in my family that I solved a case. All my relatives were very proud of me. After some hours, I got ready to go to the court. At the court, there were two lawyers, a judge, some polices, and many people. After the hearing of the lawyers, the judge said, “For killing Mr. GB, Mr. ER will be kept in the jail for 20 years. The case is closed.� After some days my vacation was over. I went back to Kathmandu, my hometown and got ready for the 4th Grade.

About the Author ‘The Surprising Murder’ is written by Sanshray Thapa. Sanshray lives in Kathmandu with his family — including his cat ‘Biru’ of course. He is 9 years old and studying at Premier International School where he just has been promoted to Grade 4. Sanshray loves reading as well as writing books.
