PREMIER’S BIRCH SHELLS
AN UNRIVALLED HISTORY
All Premier high-end marching drums use premium quality Birch shells sourced from around the world. Birch is a readily available, dense hardwood that tools well. It is a fast growing tree that is commonly large in diameter. Birch glues well, takes stain extremely well and has very good bending proper4es.
1968 Launch of the S41 Super Royal
Sco5 snare drum; an innova4ve pipe band drum developed in conjunc4on with legendary pipe band drummer Alex Duthart.
Across the globe marching music is a profession, a family, a history, a tradi4on and passion. As a marching musician you carry the memory of those that went before you and inspire those who will follow in your footsteps. Premier is very proud to be an integral part of marching ac4vi4es all across the globe. Long considered the world’s leader and innovator in the manufacture of marching drums Premier con4nues to push the boundaries of design and has inspired many to emulate the look and sound of its unique musical instruments. World-class performers and beginners alike constantly provide the challenges that keep the company reaching to new heights. Premier strives to consistently provide the world’s finest instruments to the world’s most demanding musicians.
Premier has been an innovator in the ac4vity for many years, and con4nues to be at the leading edge in design and quality and pioneered many aspects of marching drum design including:
• • • • • • •
High-tension tuning Truly free-floa4ng shells for snare, tenor and bass Weight-saving construc4on Fundamental tuning ability Parallel ac4on snare throw-off Superior projec4on and ar4cula4on Kevlar drumheads
Premier began making marching drums early in its history and con4nues to this day to define the look and sound that others follow. During the 1980s Bri4sh military corps took the Premier sound to America and sparked a revolu4on in drum design that many imitate. Premier has always counted the finest marching performers and educators among its endorsing ar4sts and looks set to build on this into the future.

MARCHING EDITION
1974 S80 and S81 drums launched,
again developed in conjunc4on with Alex Duthart, these build upon the success of their predecessor.
1987
The ground-breaking HTS 200 is developed and in partnership with the world’s foremost pipe band drummer Jim Kilpatrick, radically redefining the look and sound of the pipe band drum.
Birch is a popular and versa4le tree that is used to make everything from beer to toothpicks. Na4ve Americans stretched Birch bark on their canoe frames and used the Birch wood for their arrows. Birch drum shells sound wonderful and look very a5rac4ve with a natural or stained finish. Birch produces a bright, posi4ve sound that provides powerful projec4on. Basswood (also known as Limewood) is used in the Parade Series, offering excellent sound characteris4cs similar to those of Birch, but at a lower cost. Of the common woods used in manufacturing drum shells; Birch, Maple and Basswood each of which have different tonal characteris/cs. The ‘tone curve’ diagrams across illustrate the different characteris/cs of each.
Birch
Great low-end, with good mid-range, and excellent high-end. Birch offers maximum projec4on and clarity, it is the op4mum choice for marching drums. Basswood has very similar tone characteris4cs.
Maple
Good low-end, with reduced mid-range and high-end response. Making it a very popular choice for drumset.
DRUM SCIENCE 1991
Star of Indiana is crowned DCI world champions fully equipped with Premier instruments.
1996
The Launch of the HTS 700 again developed with Jim Kilpatrick; HTS 700 during its reign goes on to win more compe44ve 4tles than any other pipe band drum in history.
2002
Premier partners with Craig ‘Hoss’ Colquhoun to further develop the innova4ve Hosbilt drums, opening up a spectrum of tuning possibili4es within the pipe band mid-sec4on.
2008
Premier redefines marching drums again with launch of HTS 800 and Revolu4on Series, firmly re-asser4ng itself as the industry leader.
A drum is simply a cylinder shaped object (the shell) with a membrane (head) stretched over one or both ends. In many different shapes and sizes, they are built using many different materials with proper4es that affect the pitch, tone and resonance. Interac4on between the head and a s4ck or beater ini4ates vibra4ons (a sound wave) which travel through the shell and the air inside it. The sound wave has characteris4cs just like any other type of wave, including amplitude, velocity, wavelength and frequency. When a s4ck or beater interacts with the head, the amplitude of the resul4ng sound wave creates its rela4ve ‘loudness’ or ‘volume’. Since sound is a compression wave, its amplitude would correspond to how much the wave is compressed (the force with which the s4ck or beater interacts with the head), this is also called ‘pressure amplitude’. Tension plays an important role in the transfer of this energy because it dictates the frequency at which the head vibrates. Higher tension and a smaller shell will mean quicker vibra4on and higher frequency. Larger drums vibrate more slowly and generally have a lower tension across the membrane; higher frequencies are absorbed more easily and lower frequencies less so. Damping (de-amplifying) the head or the shell by a5aching hardware that will absorb vibra4ons will affect resonance and projec4on. This is the basic principle behind Premier’s unique free-floa4ng shells and low-contact tension brackets. By minimizing or avoiding shell contact altogether, the resonance and projec4on of the drum is radically increased. premier-percussion.com

Tuning the HTS 800 / 400 by Jim Kilpatrick
Top Head Always start with the top head, and 4ghten the tension bolts down un4l the head of the bolt sits into the recess of the stress ring or top hoop. You may have to go back over the bolts to make sure they are in evenly. The most important aspect is to tension the top head evenly. The two most recognised ways to do this is to either tension the bolts diagonally across the drum or to tension each bolt alterna4vely. It is important that you only tension the bolt an eighth of a turn at the most at any 4me. For the best results, bring the tension on your top head up over a few days. Tension the head up to where you think it will sound best. The final tension of the top head has to be le% to the individual drummer. Remember that you can always go back to the top head at any 4me a%er se6ng up the rest of the drum. I always take the height and tension off the top snare before se6ng it up. Raise the top snare un4l you feel it pressing against the top head. At this stage you will have a sound which can be worked on. Then move on to the bo5om head. Bo0om Head Tension the bo5om head in the same way. You will find that the bo5om head, being made of mylar, will stretch far more than the top head. You should tension the bo5om head to the point where you find it quite hard to depress the head with your thumb. Remember, if you want a high pitch drum with good snare defini4on you need to have your bo5om head very 4ght. Set the bo5om snare wires so that they feel free and responsive. Make sure the four corners of the bo5om snare wires are set evenly onto the bo5om head. Your drum is now ready to be fine tuned to the sound and projec4on that suits your style of playing. Periodically check the tension of the top and bo5om snares for op4mum sound. If you think the drum sounds dull or a bit flat, don't start tensioning the heads, check the tension of your snare wires first. The ideal set-up for your HTS 800 is to have the top and bo5om heads tensioned to your desired pitch and both snare wires set in a way that produces op4mum snare response. premier-percussion.com

The names Premier and Hosbilt are synonymous with quality and musicality and together they have revolu4onised the sound of the modern pipe band. The Hosbilt sound has become the first choice of the discerning pipe band across the globe.
Premier is the only manufacturer to offer truly free-floa4ng shells on bass and tenor drums allowing the shell to fully resonate. With Premier Hosbilt drums you truly feel, and hear, the difference.
The revolu4onary Hosbilt Turnbuckle Tensioning System makes it easy to match tension on both heads of the drum since as you turn you are tensioning both heads simultaneously, this means it is very easy to get the drum ‘in tune with itself’ and to find the fundamental note. A tympanic tuner can be used to check all tension zones are equal and fine tuning can be done by ear or using a chroma4c tuning device.

As with size selec4on, tuning of tonal bass drums is highly personal. Again, the director must consider the overall desired applica4on of the instrument. Basic drumhead tuning techniques apply however. U4lizing the “cross tuning” method, each tension bolt should be 4ghtened in sequences of small turns. Tonal Bass Drum Dampening Tonal bass drums most o%en employ some level of dampening to both heads. This can be as simple as adhesive foam a5ached directly to the drumhead, or interior shell of the drum. Recent advancements in drumhead technology have yielded mul4ple op4ons in pre-dampened products from various head manufacturers as well. Tradi4onal “foaming” of a drumhead can be achieved via the applica4on of various commercially available adhesive backed foam products. The 1-2 inch wide strips of foam can be applied around the interior circumference of the bass drum allowing contact to the head when drum is assembled. This method allows for a consistent and clean applica4on across the range of drums. The director may wish to vary the amount of foam used according to drum size and overall desired effect.

DIAMOND CHROME HARDWARE
Common pitch intervals for tonal bass drums.
Sizing selec4ons and tuning of tonal bass drums remains as varied as the individuals who play them. Directors may wish to consider size of the ensemble, physical size of the instrumentalists, and the applicable performance arena. Generally accepted tonal bass drum set ups include graduated sizes in evenly spaced intervals of 2 inches (see diagram). Addi4onal low end may be obtained by including a bo5om drum with a larger interval. Modern ensembles typically include 4 or more bass drums as dictated by both literature and personnel.

The ceremonial Drum Majors mace is seen as a symbol of music and military discipline around the world. The posi4on of Drum Major originated in the Bri4sh Army with Corps of Drums in the 1600’s. Military groups performed mostly duty calls and ba5le signals during that period, and a fife and drum corps, directed by the Drum Major, would use short pieces to communicate to field units. With the arrival of military concert bands and pipe bands around the 18th century, the posi4on of the Drum Major was adapted to those ensembles.

REGIONAL TRADITIONS
MILITARY
Drums have throughout history been the way to bring people together, and have been a signal to communi4es in 4me of both adversity and celebra4on, whether leading armies into ba5le, or crowds into fes4vity.
Military bands and Corps of Drums were historically the first marching bands, from which modern marching ac4vi4es have evolved around the world today.
Royal Marines
Instrumenta4on varies, but generally uses brass, percussion, and woodwinds. Military marching bands typically march in a forward direc4on with straight lines. Music is performed at a constant tempo to facilitate the steady marching of the en4re military group with which the band is playing. Many countries have a proud tradi4on of military music which con4nues to this day.

Bagad Kemper
DRUM CORPS
In many parts of the world regional tradi4ons are very important in celebra4ng local culture, for example the Bagad bands of Bri5any; the pipe bands of Galcia; the ‘Banda de Guerra’ marching bands of Mexico, and the carnival bands of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, are amongst the areas where regional tradi4ons involve marching drums and instruments.
Evolving from tradi4onal military and marching bands in the USA, Drum Corps style ensembles now include a variety of musical and marching ac4vi4es. Combining precision movements, elaborate props, and music from all genres, the ever-evolving groups remain innova4ve and entertaining. An entertainment fixture at American High School and Collegiate football games, the ensembles have maturated into self-suppor4ng ac4vi4es with varying forms of compe44on. DCI (Drum Corps Interna4onal) features sophis4cated brass and percussion groups who tour and compete annually during the summer months. WGI (Winter Guard Interna4onal) consists of smaller percussion only units compe4ng indoors during the winter and spring. Both ac4vi4es con4nue to have profound innova4ve influence on the exis4ng school based programs worldwide.
PIPE BAND
A pipe band is a musical ensemble consis4ng of pipers and drummers. The Sco6sh pipe band, consists of a sec4on of pipers, up to 10 snare drummers, several tenor drummers and one or two bass drummers.
The snare drums are designed to cut through the high-pitched sound of the pipes and the snare drummers play complicated rudimental music. This sec4on is known as the drum corps. The tenor drums and bass drums are tuned to different pitches on the bagpipes and played with flourishing beaters. This sec4on is known as the bass sec4on. Compe44ve pipe bands are among the most demanding marching performers in the world and drums designed for pipe band use need to withstand high tension and many grueling outdoor performances. 22 | REBOUND
MARCHING EDITION
Instrumenta4on varies within each ac4vity and group. However, the most common ensemble consists of a “Ba5ery”; marching snare drums, mul4-tenors, and tonal bass drums, exact quan44es of which are influenced by literature, available personnel and desired effect, and a “Pit” or “front ensemble”; orchestral instruments including mul4ple marimbas, xylophones, 4mpani, chimes, and other non-marching percussion. Addi4onal melodic sec4ons o%en include brass and or woodwind instruments dictated by the exact discipline and affilia4on. Percussion Galac&ques
Drum de Dames
Marching bands have long been used by communi4es and groups such as Town Bands, Scout Bands, Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades, Police, Fire and other bands. It has been tradi4onal in many countries for workplaces, such as colleries, steelworks, railways and factories to have formed marching and brass bands.

WHERE THE BEAT MEETS THE STREET
A great strength of marching percussion is in its variety. From Tradi4onal Military, Army, Pipe Band, American Drum Corps, Regional tradi4onal and Carnival bands, Fire and Police departments, and factory bands through to the new avant-garde performance groups. This movement brings drumming to theatres, schools, outdoor events, spor4ng events, and the city streets, anywhere where the excitement and dynamism of percussion accentuates their art and performance.

In Bri5any, the first Bagad was formed in 1949 by railway workers in Carhaix. Bagad Kemperle is the oldest Bagad today. A Bagad consists of three groups of instruments: bagpipes, bombardes and drums. The associa4on of a bombard (a type of oboe) with a Breton bagpipe (biniou) has a long tradi4on in Bri5any. The Bagad bands were inspired by the Sco6sh pipe band movement hence drums being included in the band. The Bagad today cons4tutes a

The marching tradi4on crosses cultures around the world with bands who demonstrate their own music when they play in different countries. This leads to a blending of styles which constantly enriches the genre.
