Newly joined Lions Abbie Lubbe, Councillor Tiaan Kotze with their sponsor LP Tammy du Plooy, Tania Steyn and Lion Jimmy Wilson. Alberton Lions Club had the privilege of inducting 3 new members to the club at their recent meeting, raising the number to a healthy 43, the largest club in the district. This may be attributed to the drive and enthusiasm evident in the club under Lion President Tammy du Plooy, and the

volume of service they are to perform in our community with the increase in members. The Alberton Lions Club is active in all of the Lions Club International “Service Pillars, engaging in projects covering Hunger, Environment, Diabetes, Vision and Paediatric Cancer, as well as a large number of general community

projects. The Alberton Lions Club will continue serving the less fortunate in our community, as they have done for the past 49 years. If anyone would like more information about The Lions or is interested in joining the Alberton Lions Club please contact Tammy du Plooy on 082 371 7053.

Holding Hands makes a difference in Alberton Holding Hands is a registered PBO (Public benefit organisation), with a focus on relieving a little of the brokenness and hurt of our community. Build your garden around a fairy tale

A NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR This week AfriForum will address a second letter to Gauteng premier David Makhura, in which the civil rights organisation will once again voice its discontent over the ongoing chaos at several Gauteng schools as a result of unplaced or incorrectly placed learners. Several schools had to close their doors on 20 January 2020 out of fear after days of protest marches by unhappy and frustrated parents. This situation unfolded while Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Education in Gauteng, continues to pretend that his province’s schools aren’t experiencing any problems. AfriForum has been contacted repeatedly by disheartened parents who say they don’t get any support from the Gauteng Department of Education. tame TIMES learned that Carien Bloem, Manager for Education at AfriForum said that they are already in the second week of the first term and there is still unhappiness among parents and schools as a direct result of the online registration and placement system. She argues that our society can’t have a situation where schools have to close their

tame TIMES met Germiston resident and owner of The Fairy Garden Shop, Hannalie Reed, who took our editor Garin Joemath on a journey through her miniature gardens that are filled with magic and fairy tales. Reed said that you can create a miniature garden in any space you have – inside or out. “A corner of a flower bed, under a tree, in a pot on the patio or even in an old fish tank. It’s very easy to be a bit dismissive about them, but I defy you to look at one of these gardens and not smile. They are enchanting, the detail and devotion will engage you,” said Reed. We learned from Reed that one of the many wonderful things about fairy gardens is that you can start small and build up over time. She claims that one must put your toe in the water with just a bench or a door, but choose your scale carefully when you start as

you need to keep the same scale throughout. “Most accessories you can buy are typically 1:12 (one inch to one foot). Houses typically are under 30cm. If you get bitten by the fairy bug there is a world out there to explore. There are themes and stories to tell, just as full size gardens can have a cottage or a classical theme, these tiny gardens can be fashioned along similar lines. A popular way to build a garden is around a fairy tale – Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Tinkerbell, Peter Pan, etc. It’s a wonderful way to capture the imagination of a reluctant reader – children will rush to the book to get more information about the garden. You can build tiny mountains, forests, farms and ponds, there are no limitations. If the garden is for children and they turn their noses up at fairies, try trolls, dragons, dinosaurs, elves and gnomes. These gardens are

Alberton and Johannesburg South Business Forum Revamped!

completely open to imagination and children will supply that in spades,” added Reed. Reed believes that children love them and that they are mesmerized by the intricate details and the sheer wonderful enchantment of them. “But there are plenty of adults too who just love creating them, arranging and rearranging, building and buying new bits and bobs, and getting it to look just right. Something which started with just a door, quickly develops into a setting by adding a mail box, a pond, tiny woodlands and paths, seats and…well, a whole miniature world,” said Reed. She stressed that it’s a cliché but it’s true – they are for ‘children of all ages’ and how far you go with it is limited only by your imagination. “You can buy all the accessories from The Fairy Garden Shop or book a session with me and I will teach you how to make little miniature items using odds around the house and garden using cocktail sticks, wire, bottle lids, twigs, etc. These projects are small enough to do in an afternoon. It really doesn’t matter if the finish isn’t perfect, it all adds to the charm,” concluded Reed. *TIP - Alpine plants and succulents are often ideal for fairy gardens – pretty and compact. A great tip is to buy tiny plants and then keep the plant in its pot and sink it into ground to restrict growth.

tame TIMES meets Faith Fellowship Christian Family Southern Warriors Shotokan Karate Dojo offers a new fully equipped Dojo in Brackenhurst

Dr’s Gerald and Gwen Cooper started Faith Fellowship Christian Family Church International in Ennerdale with the God-given vision to bring people into the family of Jesus Christ, develop them to Christian maturity and equip them for their ministry in the church in order to magnify God’s name. They are in leadership with Dr Theo Wolmarans and his wife Beverley, Christian Family Church International Johannesburg is one of the largest churches of its kind in Southern Africa. Their culture at CFC can be summed up in our 4 key values... CONNECT, DISCOVER, BELONG, GROW.

We don’t like to see anyone having to go through life alone or without purpose and therefore we focus on providing the opportunity for everyone to be connected, to discover their purpose, to know they belong to a family and to help them to grow in their relationship with God and with others. At CFC, our doors are wide open to people from all backgrounds, regardless of where they are on their spiritual journey. What people usually notice first about us is the life-giving nature of our ministry. Our goal is to infuse life and God’s love into people and families through engaging, powerful worship services that offer biblical truth in relevant and practical ways.

Catching up with Tevin Blignaut tame Times had the privilege to meet with Tevin Blignaut, a motivational speaker from Roodepoort with a vision to promote hope for young and old in South Africa. We spoke to Tevin to understand his ambition behind coaching and inspiration to help equip his target audience.

1. What is the motivation behind your initiative? The vision of @ Tevinthespeaker is to discuss the concept of purpose and the Kingdom message, all around the world, so that people understand it and live it. My mission is world peace through the idea of heaven on earth. Now, this may seem far fetched but the honest truth is that this vision and mission is so close, that all we have to do is reach out and grab it. In-fact, the mission is made by possible by the fulfilment of the vision. The concepts of peace, love, joy and righteousness will be the result of this message. And that is the motivation behind the brand of @ Tevinthespeaker. 2. Who is your target audience?

The target audience is anyone who is willing to listen - because the message is for everyone. But the primary focus is on my generation and generations that are to come. 3. How do you plan your daily, weekly and monthly themes such as key lessons, success inspiration and dream coaching I have developed a plan of action model that is centered around the book release of that year. As you may know, the book I have written and will be released at the end of February, is centered on purpose. So, my theme for 2020 is purpose. Next year, 2021, the theme will be introducing the Kingdom concept – which is the book I will be writing this year.

tame TIMES met Sensei Paul Da Silva from the Southern Warriors Shotokan Karate Dojo & Fitness Centre in Brackenhurst at the Bracken Villa Shopping Centre, corner of Vermooten and Atmore Streets, Brackenhurst. Sensei Paul said that he has been participating in karate for almost 30 years and believes that the fundamental karate principles are a healthy and holistic way to conduct one’s life. His wife, Alexandra da Silva, a very wellknown and extremely popular fitness instructor at Virgin Active and Viva Gyms will be conducting a select number of fitness related classes. Alexandra’s classes are designed to motivate fitness and core strength in individuals. As a longtime resident of Alberton, Da Silva said that he was inspired to open a fully equipped dojo and fitness centre in Brackenhurst with a view to better equip people to learn karate in Alberton and the surrounding areas. As the dojo is fully serviced, the karateka are able to correct technique, perfect their relevant katas, practice their kumite and improve on their fitness levels, all under one roof. Sensei Paul further stressed that although karate in itself means different things to different people, in his personal view, it is a way in which he conducts his personal way of life. “My passion is to teach karate, and to share the way of the empty hand. Karate is for everyone, regardless of their age or physical ability. It’s not a religion but is a type of lifestyle whereby one lives with certain rules which we call the dojo kun. Karate also brings families together. It’s an old art form benefitting people as individuals as well as in groups. It has the added benefit of promoting families to train together in an environment in which they can learn, grow and still have fun,” added Sensei Paul. Sensei Paul told tame TIMES that karate has inspired him to be a better person, to live a better life and to help others. He said that karate is a traditional art form, and that the dojo doors are open to anyone who is willing and wanting to learn the art. The Southern Warriors Shotokan Karate Dojo & Fitness Centre is affiliated to the United Shotokan-Ryu (USR) an

independent Shotokan Karate Union founded in South Africa. Our federation is one of the few organisations, who teach and grade disabled children and adults and allow them to obtain their black belts in karate. The Union has been formed based on a modern ideology which will strive to meet and serve the diverse needs of our members and instructors. As part of USR’s objectives, world class instructors will be brought to South Africa, and specifically to the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng on an annual basis. Priority will be given to international instructors who transmit Shotokan Karate-do as a form of Japanese Budo rather than as a sport. Sensei Paul explained that his teaching style and methods are motivated by educating children and adults not to fight, but instead, to defend themselves, and to retreat from certain situations. He believes that students should be taught to only attack an opponent if they are being attacked first, thereby taking on a more defensive mind set, and not an antagonist or attack mind set. At his dojo, Sensei Paul said that the students are able to make friends, learn self-defence, conquer ADHD, integrate the two brain halves, boost self-esteem, improve concentration, improve spatial orientation, improve gross motor skills, improve hand-eye coordination, learn self-respect and respect for others, improve self-discipline, participate individually, as well as in a team, but most importantly have fun”. The Southern Warriors Shotokan Karate Dojo & Fitness Centre offers the following: Shotokan Karate Classes Self defence Classes Group Fitness Classes Karate Equipment Sales Karate has the potential to unite families, whether through training in classes together, supporting one another at tournaments and championships, or just by following the principles of karate. Sensei Paul ended our interview by sharing the karate principles (dojo kun): Seek perfection of character Be faithful Endeavour Respect others Refrain from violent behavior For more information, feel free to contact Sensei Paul da Silva on 083 226 6474 or Alex da Silva on 079 936 8285

Future equestrian star Zenobia Stelzner

Over the weekend tame TIMES hung out with 9-year-old Zenobia Stelzner, her coach Lauren Coltman from Equicolt Equiestrian and her two ponies in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. Young Zenobia, a student at Grace Trinity School for Girls, is passionate about horse riding and told tame TIMES that it has formed part of her lifestyle since the age of 3. Zenobia said that she loves horse riding and that it brings her joy and peace. “I do horse riding twice a week and I alternate between the two horses on a Monday and Thursday. It has become part of my lifestyle,” said

Zenobia. Her coach Lauren Coltman is very experienced and says that her passion started when she was 15. One of Zenobia’s dreams is to participate in the SANESA National Championships in 2021 which she and coach Lauren is training very hard for. It is a competition Lauren knows well as she also competed in the SANESA National Championships when she was a teenager. Lauren says that Zenobia is a future horse riding star and she shows commitment far beyond her age. When tame TIMES asked Zenobia how she can inspire upcoming horse riders like herself to keep on dreaming she smiled and said that they just need to believe. Your dreams will always come true if you stay committed and just believe in yourself. “If I believe I can be a champion so too can you,” said Zenobia. Coach Lauren said that Zenobia is a true inspiration to her and to many others. She also encouraged aspiring riders to take up the wonderful sport, which blends a human’s love for animals and the exhilaration of riding. “If you love the animal it does make it easier, you always got to love the horse first before you love the sport – you will have the horse as a partner not a machine,” added Coltman.

Laticia Jansen: School blamed as pupil, 15, raped and burned to death By: News24 reporter The Gauteng Department of Education says it is saddened by yet another death of a pupil. Laticia Princes Jansen, 15, was allegedly stabbed, raped and burned to death on Wednesday and was found in a nearby bush in Elsburg, Germiston, on Friday, 24 January. Jansen was in Grade 9 at Graceland Education Centre. “According to information at our disposal, Laticia didn’t come back home from school. Subsequently, the grandmother panicked and started checking in the neighbourhood, but to no avail. The grandmother couldn’t sleep. The next morning, on Thursday, 23 January 2020, she reported her missing at the police station, but was informed to bring a photograph of a child. Unfortunately, no action was taken,” the department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona said in a statement on Sunday. Mabona said that, when Laticia’s grandmother reported to the school, it was confirmed to her that she had been absent on the day. Mabona said it was concerning that the school had failed to assist the concerned grandmother. After the grandmother mobilised members of the community, a search

took place on Friday, resulting in the discovery of her burnt body in the bushes. “We are informed that Laticia and a group of learners from Dukathole in Germiston, were on Wednesday, 22 January 2020, left behind by the departmental scholar transport and unfortunately had to turn back home. It seems Laticia was left behind by her peers while walking back home, apparently after complaining about a heavy school bag, which she was trying to fix. Accordingly, that was the last time she was seen by her peers,” Mabona said. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the family to convey his condolence. He assured them that, if the school had acted in bad faith, he would act decisively. “It is alleged that the scholar transport started a tendency of departing earlier than scheduled, as a result leaving many learners behind, which is a serious concern for us. We will investigate the circumstances surrounding this allegation. We have visited the family to convey our sincere condolences this afternoon, 26 January 2020,” Lesufi said. The department’s psycho-social team is expected to visit the school on Monday to offer counselling to the community and family.

Bus driver killed in horrific crash on N17

A bus driver was killed instantly when his bus smashed into the rear of a stationary articulated truck carrying a large container on the N3 southbound before the N17 split in Germiston at about 9.30pm on Friday night, a city official said. City of Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesman William Ntladi said on Saturday that according to information from the scene, the bus driver was killed while he was on his way to pick up passengers in the Germiston CBD for a trip to Marble Hall in Limpopo. The driver was declared dead by paramedics. “Apparently, the bus came from behind and the driver didn’t

notice that the truck was stationery. As a result, he crashed onto the rear of the truck and was killed instantly,” he said in a statement. Germiston central fire station rescue personnel assessed the situation and “noticed that the bus driver was motionless and trapped behind the steering wheel”. The rescue team used specialised hydraulic equipment, the “jaws of life”, to free the body from the wreckage. The truck driver was not injured. Four lanes of the freeway were affected and had to be closed for the duration of the operation, leaving only one lane open to traffic, Ntladi said.
