안녕하십니까? 올해 11회째를 맞이하는 ‘2016 최강애니전’은 안시, 자그레브 등 전 세계 유수의 7개 영화제에서 수상하거나 본선에 진출하여 수상 후보에 오른 총 23개국, 84편의 작품이 상영됩니다. 4일간의 짧은 여정이지만 올해 전 세계에 감동과 놀라움을 선사한 애니메이션을 직접 관람하면서 올 한해 애니메이션의 흐름을 정리해보는 자리가 될 것입니다. 올해 ‘2016 최강애니전’에는 국내 개봉 당시 이미 큰 사랑을 받았던 <철콘 근크리트>의 개봉 10주년을 기념하기 위해 마이클 아리아스감독이 방한하여 상영 후 관객과의 대화 등 특별한 만남을 준비했습니다. 또한 서울애니메이션센터 인근의 마마게스트하우스에서는 ‘스페셜 하우스’ 특별행사를 마련해 관객과 감독이 직접 호흡할 수 있는 전시와 토크 사인회를 통해 더욱 색다른 체험과 즐거움을 느끼실 수 있을 것입니다. 특히 내년에는 글로벌 애니타운의 허브로서 새롭게 재탄생할 서울애니메이션센터 의 재건축 공사가 시작됨에 따라 당분간 ‘최강애니전’이 남산에서 열리지 못하게 됩니다. ‘최강애니전’은 남산자락의 서울애니메이션센터와 함께 해 온 11년의 역사를 통해 그동안 창작자들에게 신선한 자극제 역할을 해왔고, 시민들에게 수준 높은 볼거리를 제공해 왔습니다. 그렇기에 올해 열리는 최강애니전은 여러모로 의미가 남다르다 하겠습니다. 앞으로도 세계 최고, 최강 애니메이션을 만날 수 있는 장을 꾸준히 마련하여 애니메이션 애호가, 감독지망생, 산업계 종사자들이 세계적인 트렌드와 상상력의 표현을 마음껏 즐기실 수 있도록 하겠습니다. 깊어가는 11월의 서울 정취를 이곳 남산에서 즐기시며 주옥같은 애니메이션을 만끽하시기 바랍니다. 감사합니다. 2016.11. Seoul Best of the Best Animation Festival 2016, now in its 11th year, has gathered together 84 animations from 23 countries. They are the award-winning and acclaimed animations from seven of the world’s most prestigious film festivals such as Annecy and Zagreb. The festival takes place over the short span of four days and offers a chance to see the major trends in animation this year. Seoul Best of the Best Animation Festival 2016 also presents a screening of the acclaimed animated feature <TEKKONKINKREET> and a special talk by director Michael ARIAS to celebrate the 10-year anniversar y of the film’s release. In addition, the “Special House” exhibition will be held at Mama Guesthouse located near the Seoul Animation Center, allowing audience members and directors to gather together and participate in the special exhibition and signing events. Furthermore, the Seoul Animation Center has begun renovations to be newly transformed into a major hub for the global animation community. As a result, Seoul Best of the Best Animation Festival will not be held in Namsan this year. For the past 11 years, our festival has collaborated with the Seoul Animation Center to offer fresh inspiration for creative artists and present superb animated films to our audience. We will continue to create a space where the finest animations can be enjoyed and animation lovers, aspiring filmmakers, and industry members can see the imaginative creations and worldwide trends in animation. 2016년 한 해 동안 전 세계 유수 애니메이션 페스티벌에서 수상하거나 주목받았던 작품들이 대거 한자리에 상영되는 ‘최강애니전’이 오는 11월 24일 개최되어 시민 및 애니메이션 마니아들에게 연말의 특별한 추억이 될 수 있길 기대합니다. 안시, 자그레브, 슈투트가르트, 판토슈 등 대표적인 국제 애니메이션 영화제에서 수상한 작품과 추천작들로 구성된 ‘BEST SHORT’ 프로그램과 안시 장편 수상작인 <손 없는 소녀>, 자그레브 프로그래머 추천작 <버드보이와 잊혀진 아이들>이 상영되는 ‘BEST FEATURE’ 외에도 특별 프로그램으로 마련된 일본작품인 <철콘 근크리트> & 마이클 아리아스 스페셜 토크도 10주년 기념으로 특별히 준비되었습니다. 애니메이션은 국가와 언어의 장벽을 넘어 전 세계 누구나 즐기고 함께 나눌 수 있는 대중예술 장르로 많은 이들이 일상에서 향유하고 있지만 국내에서는 아직 상업성이 없다는 이유로 외면해와 영화제가 아니면 쉽게 접하기 어려운 것이 현실입니다. 이번 상영회를 통해 애니메이션을 사랑하는 많은 이들의 문화적 갈증 해소의 기회가 되길 기대하며 본 행사주최인 서울특별시와 저희 협회와 공동 주관기관인 SBA서울애니메이션센터에 깊은 감사의 마음을 전합니다. 행사 기간 많은 분들이 찾아주시어 어수선하고 힘겨운 일상에서 벗어나 잠시나마 즐겁고 유익한 시간이 되길 기원합니다. 2016.11. 한국독립애니메이션협회 회장 나기용

Seoul Best of the Best Animation Festival begins on November 24 and gathers together this year’s award-winning and acclaimed animations from the most prestigious festivals around the world. We hope this year’s festival is a memorable event for visitors and animation lovers during the holiday season. The Best Short Program presents winners and finalists from the competitions of leading international animation festivals such as Annecy, Zagreb, Stuttgar t, and Fantoche. The Best Feature Program presents <The Girl without Hands>, the winner of the Jur y Distinction for best animated feature at Annecy, and <Psiconautas, the Forgotten Children> the programmer choice at Zagreb. In addition, we present the Japanese feature animation <TEKKONKINKREET> in a special screening and talk with director Michael ARIAS to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the film. Animation is a popular art form that can be enjoyed and shared by people around the world across borders and languages. Many people enjoy animation in their everyday lives, but in Korea it is still difficult to see diverse animations outside of film festivals due to the belief that animated films are not commercially viable. This year’s festival offers a cultural and artistic feast for animation lovers. 안시 애니메이션영화제 Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2016년 안시 국제 애니메이션 영화제는 애니메이션 관련해서 꼭 가볼 만한 행사임을 또 한 번 입증했다. 85개국에서 총 9,153명의 애니메이션 관계자가 참여했으며, 총 2700여 편의 공식 출품작에서 선정된 500편의 작품을 상영했다. 9편의 장편 경쟁작 가운데 프랑스-스위스 합작 <내 이름은 꾸제트>가 만장일치로 최고 장편상을 수상했고, 단편 부문에서는 프랑스-캐나다 합작인 프랭크 디온 감독 의 <사라지는 머리>가 대상을 받았다. 고블랭의 트레일러 <물랑 루즈>와 함께 12세 이상의 관객을 대상으로 한 열 편의 작품은 2016년 안시 최고의 작품으로 72분 동안 다양한 그래픽 스타일과 이야기를 선보일 것이다. This year’s 2016 edition again proved that the Annecy Festival is a must-go event for the animation world. Overall, 9,153 pass-holders from 85 countries came to attend the screening of approximately 500 filmschosen from among 2,700 formallysubmitted works. Nine impatiently-awaited feature films were in the running for the crowning Cristal. And it’s a French-Swiss production which unanimously won the public prize as well as the Cristal for best feature film: <Ma vie de Courgette (My Life as a Zucchini)> by Claude Barras. In the short film category it was another coproduction, French-Canadian this time, which earned its Cristal: Une tete disparait (The Head Vanishes) by Franck Dion. Targeted to a public of over 12 years, there are ten films in this Best of Annecy 2016 (along with the GOBELINS trailer <Au Moulin Rouge>) that present 72 minutes of viewing and a cross section of the graphic styles and stories found in the competition.

자그레브 애니메이션 영화제 ANIMAFEST ZAGREB 자그레브 국제애니메이션영화제는 애니메이션 예술에 전념하는 세계에서 두 번째로 오래된 영화제이다. 1972년 시작한 이래, 영화제는 경쟁, 회고전, 발표회, 전시, 피칭, 강의, 워크숍과 같은 프로그램과 다양한 부대행사로 애니메이션 예술을 세계에 알리는 데 지속적인 영향을 주고 엄청난 공헌을 해왔다. 애니메이션계에서 많이 선호하고 이 분야의 가장 중요한 4~5개의 영화제 중 하나로 인식되고 있다. 자그레브는 아카데미 상과 카툰 도르의 자격을 갖춘 영화제로 단편 대상 수상자(올해는 <엔드게임>의 필 멀로이)는 미국 “오스카”와 가장 중요한 유럽 애니메이션 상인 카툰 도르에서 경쟁할 기회를 얻는다. The World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb is the world’s second oldest film festival entirely dedicated to the art of animation. Since its establishment in 1972, this festival with all its programs - competitions, retrospectives, presentations, exhibitions, pitching, lectures, workshops and all other additional events - have consistently influenced and greatly contributed to promotion of animation art throughout the world. Favoured by many from the animation circuit, it is being seen as one of the 4-5 most important festivals of its kind. Zagreb is Academy Award and Cartoon D’Or qualifying festival. Winner of Grand prix for short films (this year <Endgame> by Phil MULLOY) gets the opportunity to compete for American “Oscars” as well as for the most important European animation award, Cartoon D’Or.

Synopsis 옛날에 거대한 말 등에 있는 어리석음과 탐욕으로 파괴된 나라가 있었다. 이제는 예전의 영광은 말의 꼬리에만 남아 한때 사람들은 행복했던 세상의 그림자 속에 살고 있다. <여행하는 나라>는 과거, 현재, 미래의 충돌에 관한 작품이다. 진짜 정체성과 자유를 찾는 사람에 대한 환상적인 이야기이다. Once upon a time, there was a country on the back of a giant horse, but it was ruined by stupidity and greed. Now, only the horse’s tail remains of its former glory, while the people live in the shadow of what used to be a happy world. <Travelling Country> is a film about the collision of past, present and future. 중국 독립애니메이션 포럼 China Independent Animation Film Forum China Independent Animation Film Forum 중국독립애니메이션영화포럼(이하 CIAFF)은 중국 본토에서 열리는 최초의 애니메이션 영화 예술 프로젝트로 민간단체들이 공동지원하는 비영리 행사이다. 2015년부터 CIAFF는 큐레이터 시스템을 실시하였으며 예술감독은 이 위샤오이다. 큐레이터들은 포럼 세션 하나의 주제 기획과 부대 행사를 담당한다. 레이 레이와 첸 시가 큐레이터를 맡은 제5회 CIAFF의 주제는 “중력파”이다. 지난 5년간 CIAFF는 독창적인 독립 애니메이션의 창작과 소통을 충실히 끌어냈다. CIAFF는 선정 작품들을 알리고 작가들과 그들의 작품을 홍보하고자 한다. 국제적으로 유명한 애니메이션 페스티벌 참여와 전시 참여 추천 그리고 중요한 기관과 기업들이 협력하는 기회를 제공한다. The China Independent Animation Film Forum (hereinafter referred to as the CIAFF) is the first animation film art project in mainland China and its non-profit, co-sponsored by some private agencies. Since 2015, CIAFF implementation of the Curator System, the Artistic Director is Yuxiao Yi. Curators are in charge of one session of the forum theme planning and activities. The theme of the 5th CIAFF is “Gravitational Wave”, is curated by Lei LEI and Xi CHEN. Finalists will be screened during the forum and compete for the final prize. For the past five years, the CIAFF is always adhering to pull for the creation and communication of original independent animation. The CIAFF would make reports about the finalists to promote the authors and their works. And opportunities are offered to be recommended to participate in international well-known animation festivals, recommended to take part in exhibitions and to cooperate with important institutions and enterprises. Known for its exceptional programming, KUKI The International Short Film Festival for Children and Youth Berlin is dedicated to presenting fabulous and unusual films of all genres and techniques that young people otherwise rarely get to see. Every year, KUKI receives approximately 1,000 short film entries festival from all over the world, from which we assemble 13 insightful and imaginative programs for children and youth aged 4-18. Running over 8 days, the festival offers screenings for school groups during the week and family and teenage programs on the weekend. There are 6 competition programs (6,500 euro total cash prize) and numerous special programs. 인디애니페스트 Indie-AniFest 매해 가을에 개최하는 인디애니페스트는 독립애니메이션 전문 영화제로 한국의 독립애니메이션 작가들의 실험적 시도와 가능성에 주목하고 애니메이션의 영역확장을 통한 비전 제시를 목표로 2005년부터 시작되었다. 한국의 독립애니메이션 작품들을 상영과 함께 이루어지는 연계 프로그램을 통해 한국의 독립애니메이션 작가들이 모두 모이는 축제의 장이다. 2016년부터 아시아 작품 공모를 시작하면서 아시아 독립애니메이션 영화제로의 발돋움 하면서 한국뿐 아니라 국제적인 독립애니메이션 영화제로 성장해 나가고 있다. Indie-AniFest is an annual film festival that opens in the fall and is dedicated to independent animated films. Since its launch in 2005, Indie-AniFest has strived to expand the scope of the field of animation and bring the spotlight to the experimentation and potential of the independent animation filmmakers of Korea. Through screenings of independent animations and connected programs, it provides a festive space where animation filmmakers can gather together. With the launch of the new Asian animation competition in 2016, Indie-AniFest is looking beyond Korea and aiming to become an international animation festival.

Synopsis <우리는 이미지를 만든다>는 인도의 마디아프라데시 주에 사는 빌족(族)의 기원신화를 해석한 애니메이션이다. 빌족에게 그림은 기도와 마찬가지인데 작품을 보면 그 이유를 알 수 있다. 이 작품은 그곳 주민인 토착 예술가 세르 싱과 영화감독 니나 사브나니가 함께 이야기 방식을 탐구한 공동 작업이다. <We Make Images> is an animated interpretation of an origin myth from the Bhil community in Madhya Pradesh, India. For the Bhil community painting is like offering a prayer and the film reveals why. The film is a collaboration between the indigenous artist Sher Singh from the community and the film maker Nina SABNANI that explores ways of telling together. 1968년 미국 LA 출생. <어비스>와 <토탈 리콜> 등의 영화에서 특수 효과 촬영 작업을 한 후 일본으로 옮겼다. 1992년 자신의 회사를 차리고 , <허드서커 대리인>, <패션쇼> 등의 특수효과를 작업하였다. 이후에 미야자키 하야오 감독의 <원령공주>(1997)과 <센과 치히로의 행방불명>(2002) 등에 자신만의 독특한 디지털 효과를 더하였다. <철콘 근크리트>를 연출하기 전에, <애니메트릭스>의 공동 프로듀서였다. Michael ARIAS has had a colorful and varied filmmaking career, spanning the worlds of visual effects, computer graphics, and traditional animation. Michael developed and patented tools for combining traditional animation and computer graphics, working closely with Studio Ghibli to add a distinct visual flavor to Miyazaki’s masterpieces <The Princess Mononoke>, and <Spirited Away>. In 2000 Michael accepted the Andy and Lana Wachowski’s invitation to produce the Matrix-inspired anthology <The Animatrix>. In 2006, following up on the success of <Animatrix>, Michael made his feature directing debut with <TEKKONKINKREET>, shown at the Berlinale and awarded Japan’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
