A WIT TO
SURVIVE
HELLO!
The Earth has grown a nervous system, and it’s us. – Daniel Dennett
4
The Nervous system mentioned can be interpreted in two ways: One, the biological system that infers Earth to be an embodiment of a person and the people (which is us) to function in society, keeping the Earth alive and pumping. The second, which is my interpretation, infers Earth to be a liberal society, made up of nervy people, like us: a literal nervous system. The second interpretation sounds way cooler, so despite sounding more depressing, it is what we shall be sticking with. Welcome to society, I guess, where a majority of our population happens to be nerve-wrecked individuals. For me, what is even more nerve-wracking is the thought of working. Not school-work, but getting-a-job-working, and I’m sure I am not the only one feeling this way. For those who can relate to me, do read on — Alongside with different working ethics and straight-forward tips, this book serves as a guide to lost souls like us (yes, including me — learning through the research and experiences I share). Through a series of visuals together with made-up characters, we can also take away their simple (yet overlooked) coping methods. So here is to the undertaking of adulthood!

FOR ‘NEWCOMER’,
ATTITUDE The one that finds peace in a quiet ride through the sunset.
The first proper job that we get will surely make us bubble in not only anxiousness but anticipation as well. In fact, you may have probably just embarked on that first job some time ago in the past month or so. Personally, I have been a part-timer for quite a few jobs now, and though I must say that the responsibility and stress faced as a full-timer are vastly different to that of a part-timer, I would declare myself as a relatively decent, and maybe even above average employee. Yes, I am looking at you— some of the unhelpful fulltimers I used to deal with. Going through that many part-time jobs, you would think that by now I would have gotten used to being called a newcomer, but being addressed as someone of that caliber comes off slightly offensive to me at times. Perhaps it is just my sensitive soul, but for some reason, that slight mockery or condescension can be heard pretty evidently through the tone of my colleagues.
10
“
So,
what’s
your
” name?
Do not misunderstand me though, I was never that arrogant little part-timer that thinks she’s too good for anything - on the contrary, I did everything as per instructed. Come to think of it now, it may have just been the tone in which my colleagues spoke to me that conveyed the wrong message. (They were ultimately helpful and nice). However, being addressed as a newcomer is not a negative thing, it has its perks:
1. 2.
You got the job.
You might be given the benefit of the doubt by other colleagues as a safety net to fall back on at times.
No doubt, being a newcomer does mean having to sit through inside jokes you struggle to understand and having your day pretty occupied by doing the work that your colleagues are unwilling to lay their hands on.
Take things in stride and keep in mind that this is just the beginning and your circumstances will only get better. Tackle the situation with an open mind and a positive attitude. Remember to smile, as corny as it sounds, smiling can make a huge difference in your workplace— it releases endorphins that improve moods and are really contagious.
13
Even if it was 7 am in the morning, there is this particular Bus Driver that would always greet his commuters with a smile.
It was ridiculous at first to see someone so glad to take the first shift in the morning. Despite not being paid extra, he sure does not get stingy with his smile. However, his actions do play a positive impact on his commuters, even though it might not seem like it. Sure enough, whenever I catch a glimpse of his joyous attitude, I start my day feeling less grumpy. So, thank you Bus Uncle.

The point is, how act determines ho people treat other including you. 16

I used to work in this cafe (part-time waitress) years ago and I had this colleague of mine that would always serve customers with a huge energetic smile. She always shared kind words as she served them their daily dose of caffeine. Customers always left happy and it helped boost the overall morale (and revenue) amongst the team. I remember asking her if her whole ‘smiling-to-customers-despiterejection’ situation ever got tiring, and her reply to me was, “Seeing them happy makes me happy because that means I am doing something right. A simple gesture has the power to make someone’s day better, and they will probably pass it on to others, something like the domino effect? Some days, if I get lucky enough, people will even take the initiative to clear their coffee cups too. Win-win! ” “But of course, do not expect to get anything in return,” she continued. “I do all these because I’ve learned to love my job.” That colleague should be awarded best-employee.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU DO.
SuS
Let me reiterate the point on the previous page. The best scenario for everyone is doing what you love right? I mean, doing something you are passionate about and getting paid for it? Sign me up! In fact, sign everyone up!’ Unfortunately, not everyone has the privilege or the luxury of doing what they love, and that is when “love what you do” comes into the equation: the job may or may not have been what you wanted, but learn to be professional with your job.

Even if you are just a part-time waitress, be the best waitress you have ever known.
Sticking to a strict schedule at a job could get really mundane, even if you deal with different people on a daily basis. However, instead of succumbing to the boredom, find ways to take on new responsibilities. Talking to others about their jobs can also expand your knowledge. Learn to keep things lively and interesting.

FOR ‘CHANGE’,
OPPORTUNITY The one that looks forward to try out new earing places.
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS AT EVERY DOOR – IF YOU OPEN THE DOOR AND UTILIZE IT WELL, IT CAN LEAD TO SUCCESS. IF NOT, IT WILL JUST BE LOUD THUMPING NOISES. 28
But here is the catch: I’ve learned that opportunities do not always look glamorous or come easy. Opportunities come in all shapes and forms: the empty position of your desired job, the hurdles you faced in your not-so-desired job, the next upcoming weekly meeting you have, and many more. Everything is an opportunity — or rather can be one, depending on how you see it. They are the risks we take and the chances we get. I know the word ‘risk’ seems dangerous and a little frisky, and because we get familiar or used to something, we tend to not venture beyond, as a result, we may miss out on other things.
29
Take, for instance, a dining place, where many people are highly

30
GIVE CHANGE Yes, someone could have taken your desired job, which landed you in
your current not-so-desired position. You may just think “The person is more experienced/ knows someone in that industry/ strings were pulled. (trust me, the list of possibilities can endless here). I would
not even miss out on the fact that you might feel inadequate for not getting the same chance.
Such a thought is negative and inevitable. Even I, too, am guilty of having them. But remember, just because someone is better than us, does not mean we should give up on what we want. Chances do not discriminate, it comes to people who choose to find and fight for it.
31
As quoted from Chris Glosser,
“Opportunities don’t happen, it’s created
Sometimes when I get beaten down, I find it hard to get back up. Some people I know can get up almost immediately after they fall, and that is really commendable. But that definitely does not apply for me. I would say do whatever that works best for you, just get back up as soon as possible. Do not stay too comfortable beaten down and not get back up, it is not exactly the best situation you want to be in a month’s time. Stay curious, keep that good attitude rolling and work hard. Ask yourself: what do the people know or have that I can learn from? How do I work around it? How do I create my own window of opportunity? Do not get bitter and cry over spilled milk (I used to do that but I ultimately grew out of it).
t just d. 33
34
The people that got the job they wanted, did not get it purely on sheer luck, they have something that the other candidates do not – hard work, and the way they present themselves.
Think of it as a food menu: there are many dishes available, but what attracted you to order a particular dish? Could it be the good descriptions, visuals, or perhaps recommendations? Now link it to your resume. Out of all the candidates that applied for the interview, why you? Could it be what is on your resume: good descriptions, visuals, or perhaps recommendations? 35
There is always a learning point for everyone (even those that have gotten your desired jobs – do not be complacent). Learn to put your ego aside, you are neither perfect nor flawed. Focus on your strengths and work upon your weaknesses. Understand that things will not always go your way, but take that leap of faith anyway. As my parents have always told me: when there is a will, there is a way. If one thing does not work out, find an alternative. This is perhaps where a majority of people stand in terms of being in their ‘not-sodesired job’. But remember to maintain a good attitude. Be humble and professional. Remember you are being paid to do a job, so do it well. Take pride in your work, even if it is nothing related to what you enjoy doing. Your work defines you as a person, not your job— and when you learn to do your work really well, you eventually will climb the ladder. Hard work is appreciated, so keep working hard and it will eventually pay off.
36
37
Of course, there will be ups and downs on the way, opportunities may come and go, and be missed. Do not dwell over missed chances, instead focus on those yet to come. Just like when a waitress starts to show disheartened and dreaded feelings to on-going queuing customers, it will prompt the remaining impatient customers to leave. On the contrary, if the waitress remained a good attitude, then it might prompt them to stay.
Remember opportunities and chances do not go to those that harp around praying or rely on what is claimed as ‘good luck’, but rather those who actively create their own chances. Think how much easier your job would be if you just look at the brighter side of things, rather than solely dreading it — again, identifying the good amongst the bad. Since you are already there, might as well make the best of it. It is all about moving forward, similar to riding a bike. It does not balance when it is stationary. Keep cycling towards your goals and take baby steps if needed. You can either stay beaten down on the ground or choose to move on, it really is up to you. Just remember that you cannot turn back in time and you should not allow yourself to stay in the past.
40
If you cannot change your circumstances, be the change you want to see.
42
FOR ‘SACRIFICE’,
RESPONSIBILITY The one that admires and grows plants for comfort and joy.
A quote from Princess Bubblegum, a character from Cartoon Network Series, Adventure Time:
Responsibilities
demand
sacrifice.
44
Everyone has responsibilities, and this does not apply solely in the context of work. You, as a living person in today’s society, have responsibilities everywhere. In public spaces, you have to be a good and considerate citizen; at home, you have to be a filial son or daughter; at work, you have to be an efficient worker; in school, you have to be a hardworking student. You get my point: responsibilities are literally everywhere and gets difficult to avoid.
45
46
Nurturing a plant is a form of taking up responsibility (for the plant’s life).
When someone runs away from one of their roles, another role might get affected too. It is similar to a game of dominoes which is essentially keeping one balanced and the rest behind it would too, or topple one and the rest would fall. Plants are like people. The elements they need to thrive and survive (like water, soil and sunlight) are similar to the roles and responsibilities we take on. All the elements, when sparingly given to the plant, would work together to help it grow – similarly to people and their roles.
47
Focus on a role or responsibility you have, have you been giving enough attention and care towards it?
48
A recent example came from my previous retail part-time job where the assistant manager
attempted to run away from his own mess (To not reveal his actual name, I will address him as Ron). Every night during a closing shift, there was paperwork that had to be done and the sales of
each outlet have to be analyzed. Ron, being the assistant manager, had to finish his paperwork
However, he messed up some minor details in the sales report and submitted the wrong copy.
I am not sure if the administrative staff were strict perfectionists or were devils in disguise, bu either way, it was enough to scare Ron away for TWO WHOLE DAYS. The next time he responded to any text was to inform of his resignation.
One example came from my previous retail part-time job where the assistant manager attempted to run away from his own mess (To not reveal his actual name, I will address him as Ron). Every night during a closing shift, there will be paperwork that have to be completed and the sales of each outlet have to be analyzed. Ron, being the assistant manager, had to finish the day’s paperwork. However, he messed up some minor details in the sales report and submitted the wrong copy. I am not sure if the administrative staff were strict perfectionists or were devils in disguise, but either way, it was enough to scare Ron away for two whole days.
The next time he responded to any text was to inform of his resignation. 50
Now, Ron is not a young reckless man that has just hit past 25 waiting to settle down. In fact, he is a 40-something-year-old father of two and the sole breadwinner of his family. By quitting his job, the people at work not only had to clean up after his mistakes and account for something they had no involvement in, his family would also suffer as the only financial income is now cut off. It is sure not fair that people around him is paying the consequences to his own action. All in all, your actions do affect the people around you (sometimes even more than it affects you.)
51
With the plant analogy mentioned earlier, each plant (similarly to our

since I am still learning to care for my ‘plants’ too).
52
53
Be humble, and let your ego.
The situation with Ron is rare but definitely is real and calls for a self-reflection. The next time you want to run and hide from all responsibilities, think about the possible domino effect that will unfold, who it would affect, and how the situation can be resolved. Of course, not everyone will be like Ron. The branch manager I used to work within that same company never runs away from her responsibilities. I used to look up to her a lot— I still do, actually. Whenever a mistake was made on her part, minor or major, she would analyze it and rectify what went wrong. With every mistake learned, she grew as a manager, and as a person. Accept it when you have made a mistake, it is not the end of the World. Settle the situation professionally, and then move on.
55
Take on new roles and responsibilities (and do them well).
56
57
Manage your stress well by keeping your optimism up. Avoid demoralizing statements like “I cannot do it”— of course, you can, you just need a set of realistic expectations. For instance, you do not have to take over the entire project, but volunteering to be a part of it is a good start.
58
nobody is perfect; So it is alright to make mistakes and sometimes running away from responsibilities seems like the much easier choice to make— but remember “Responsibilities demand sacrifice. The sacrifice and willpower to face your responsibility will eventually result in greater growth and chances; it will be worthwhile in the end.
59
60
FOR ‘YOUTH’,
TIME The one that loves planning out surprises for the jolly thrill.
Time stops for no man or woman. Even the infamous President Donald Trump and the late Mahatma Gandhi are no exception to the ticking of the clock. This is a fact that everyone is aware of. Each person has 24 hours in a day and each second is important as it is something that we cannot take back. Even at this very moment, the clock is ticking away and it will not stop. So how do we ensure that we use our precious time wisely?
62
The answer is simple yet hard to follow through with: we have to manage them.
64
While we are still young, we may assume that we have all the time in the world, resulting to us idling around and becoming unproductive individuals.
Youth is all about the process of resilience: you fall down, you get up, and then continue. Our minds are fresh and capable, yet we do not take advantage of our youth properly while it lasts. Think about how an exposed and untouched cake is placed on a table from the beginning to the end of someone’s birthday celebration, assuming that the celebration lasts for 5 hours. The only thing that is not sitting within the cake is its freshness and it probably would not taste as good as when the birthday girl first cut it. If the cake is meant to be eaten, why wait till the end of the party to enjoy the cake? Some things are better done earlier than later, so do not tell yourself “I’ll do it later”. Later is probably never.
65
We will not stay young forever (birthdays will remind you that). One

what they are doing currently with their lives. I would always ask them “Why not start now?”, and the common answer is always a “It is too late, I am old”.
The whole scenario is almost like a repeated script with different faces.
66
Later is probably never.
Whether you are eighteen or forty-three years-old, we always live a fulfilling life by b the architect to our own des
can being stiny.
While I agree that youth is a virtue, I do not agree on the part where being “old” and “too late” is a reason for not being able to pursue your goals – unless your goals would affect your health and well-being. Create a balance in your life and work. Work plays a huge part in your life, whether you like it or not. It becomes an integral part of who you are. As mentioned before, your job will not define you, but the quality of your work does. In today’s context, it seems difficult to produce high quality work due to the “later” and “too late” system we created for ourselves. But those are just excuses you make for yourself. We have the power to control our life based on time.
69
When you gift someone a present on their birthday, do you think about a better gift that can be given? I know I do think of that, and perhaps I am the only weird one that does. But the thing is, I could have gotten two presents if I wanted to. Or just a surprise random gift will be sweet, but I chose not to. The only person really stopping you from anything is yourself.
WHY WAIT?
70
71
Make a pact with yourself that you will do the very best work you can manage, and take pride in it.
72
Learn to schedule your day, regardless of whether or not it is for work

Remember when the sun sets in the evening, the day has come to an end — and never will that day come again.

78
FOR ‘ TECHNOLOGY’,
COMMUNICATION The one that goes for hair treatment by the hair salon monthly.
Communication is a form of art. When you do it efficiently, it becomes a beautiful masterpiece, if not it gets confusing and messy; and with today’s modern technology, communication has never been easier.
Libby Larsen once said: “The great myth of our times is that technology is communication. Communication is not technology, it is the exchanging of information and ideas between two or more people. However, technology aids greatly in communicating, just take a look at the advancement of mobile phones. It has advanced to a point where people are given the luxury of choice to communicate in different mediums. What used to only be faceto-face meetings, has now evolved to become Skype calls and chain emails from around the World. With the blossoming technology, people become less formal, more transparent and more direct with what they want to say.
81
Do not assume people would always understand what you have to say.
82
83
It gets challenging to know the other party you are working with since your only form of interaction lies behind the digital screen. 84
Nuances can be lost through the lack of tonality and facial expressions. So what do you do then? You have to manage your time and put in the effort to manage your form of communication. Do not allow your emails to pile up day after day, this will increase your frustration. Create an efficient filing system within your email program. Send those ‘expired’ emails to the trash and clear your inbox at least once a week. Make sure to follow up closely with meetings or previous emails so you do not empty the wrong one, I did it once with my submission information and it was really awkward getting that email back from the lecturer that sent it. Read incoming emails thoroughly before you hit “send”. Always remember to check your spelling at the end. In today's day and age, there is no excuse for typos, so turn the spell-check on. Keep a dictionary nearby, ideally online. Clean your sentences up, this shows you care. Read over everything at least once — or maybe even twice. Do not use shortcuts or acronyms in a professional setting, even if you are prone to using that in personal conversations with friends. In fact, one method I am practicing now to kick writing carelessly away is to actually type in whole sentences to my friends — as a form of practice. It may seem strange at first, but it definitely minimalized my error in typing.
85
Understand that when I say technology is advancing, I do not mean

decide if we can eventually work together.
86
Remember to leave a good impression — both on and off screen.
87
88
89
Learn to keep up to date with the news — it can serve as a great conversation starter. Read a magazine or digital newspaper during your spare time instead of scrolling through your Instagram feeds or stories. Being well informed develops your mind and broaden your perspective, allowing you to give off a better and intellectual impression.
90
91
Remember, the thing connecting you to your email sent and the interview is none other than
your name. 92
It is important to establish your identity and unique selling point. Yes, you are selling and representing yourself. Remember that whenever you try to convince someone into doing anything (including hiring you), you are selling.
93
Everyone is unique in their own ways. Think of it as a hairstyle. Every hairstyle is unique on its own and requires specific hair condition and care. 94
95
What applies to others, may not apply to you the same way.
Hence, while working to establish your selling point, learn to work on your strengths, and do no be swayed by others.

Think about why audiences (including me) view the well-known talk show host, Jimmy Fallon, as one of the greatest American interviewer; or the man behind Apple’s design success — Steve Jobs. Both Fallon and Jobs manage to convince and sell their identity to the public. They succeed (obviously), but they did not just settle and be complacent with their title; in fact, they constantly work to be better communicators, maintaining their respective titles. Similar to Fallon and Jobs, we should strive to become better communicators. Learn to articulate what you have to say and do not beat around the bush. Remember, actions speak louder than words.
99
100
FOR ‘ COMPROMISE’,
FLEXIBILITY The one that jams to their handwritten music as a form of escape.
We have reached the grey area of society whereby you often do more than what you signed up for — which means
getting paid less, for more work. 102
I know it sucks and sounds silly, like who would agree to this? Trust me, I was pretty against it myself. However, I learned that with the advancement of technology, people are expected to increase their level of productivity. Whether you willingly volunteered to take on more responsibilities, learn to do it well. Do not just be confined to your the scope of work that your job description entails. The working world has changed a lot over the years. The task of an individual in a companies are becoming vague. Things are being compromised and our workforce has evolved to become a lot more flexible, so should you.
103
Similar to learning a new song on the guitar through an online streaming ad, taking initiative and practicing new and unfamiliar chords help you gain more exposure and grow as a person. 104
105
Employees who have flexible mindsets tend to approach different situations based on the preferences and demands of each individual. They adapt and respond to changes quickly. Their stress and people management get better, and they know to get to be more familiar with other job scopes as well. As a result, life for them becomes a tad bit easier in the workforce. When you prove that you are able to work flexibly, new companies would want you; your current company will find ways to keep you. You will be that gem that everyone will want to go for. Flexibility is definitely one of the main assets that employers are looking for today.
106
There is not really a reason why one cannot be flexible. The beauty of technology has made flexibility easier for us, physically.
Think of it this way, there is no need to stay over-time in the office to complete your work anymore. We are connected in and out of the office through telecommunication. Everything is on and from our devices, and accessible with a click of a phone button. You can now work from home, or practically from anywhere with Internet access. Freelancers and entrepreneurs today do not even have a proper workspace or office yet can still produce top-notch quality work. It all revolves around how you are going to compromise and manage your time and space – a give and takes we do in life. Create your own work-life balance and learn to integrate them, it really does make things easier.
107
SKILLS CAN BE
TAUGHT,
BUT ATTITUDE CANNOT.
It is not enough for employees to be the only flexible ones though, employers have to be on the same too. We work in a collective society, so it is vital for people to get on the same page to work together. If you are an employer (or entrepreneur), take note. This one’s for you. People have to compromise with each other, especially when work requires collaborations from both parties. Everyone has different intentions, so it is crucial to find the middle ground.
110
111
As an empl 112
loyer,
you have to acknowledge that each individual works differently. It is impossible to cater perfectly to everyone’s needs and styles but does make a conscious effort to accommodate it. It is obvious in your employees’ eyes whether you care or not. Talk to your employees if you will. Understand where they are coming from and be open about it. Give them latitude on how they can accomplish their goals. Provide them with feedback, guidance, and recognition for their success. Try not to flare up if they underperformed, this may be a test of patience, but patience is important in a team. Instead, figure out how you can help them improve. This will prove to them that you care and appreciate their hard work – increasing their morale boost. And when there is a boost in morale, the higher the chances of producing better work. Balancing work and personal life while leading a group will nurture you to grow as a better person and leader. I would like to emphasize that there is definitely a difference between a leader and a boss, the latter guides and leads the group while the boss just tells others what to do without learning with the group.
113
114
Being a good leader may be a tedious role to play and even I, myself, am still learning to improve my leadership with every opportunity I have.
One way I try to improve my leadership skill is by teaching someone new an instrument that I play (more specifically, a guitar). This gives me the opportunity to guide and learn together with the different ‘students’ I teach. I must say, many of my ‘student’ do have a keen ear for chord and it is always fun and interesting to see them write chords that could be harmonized together.
115
As quoted from retired Chinese Politician Jiang Zemin,
“IT TAKES TWO HANDS TO CLAP.”
At the end of the day whether you are an employee and employer, compromising on your part will always come to play (whether it is your personal time, or catering to another person’s need), but trust me when I say that if done right, the end product of your work will definitely be one of your proudest.
117
118
FOR ‘BURNOUT’,
SELF-CARE The one that seeks new music for inspirations and self-expressions.
SELF-CARE IS SUCH A SIMPLE YET OVERLOOKED CONCEPT.
We all know what self-care is — it is literally in the name, caring for oneself. It is mentioned everywhere, yet, the significance of the word seems to be overlooked and watered down—maybe because no one really prioritizes both their mental and physical health anymore. (or maybe they are simply confused as to how). Many of us youths are at the age where we hustle and grind hard for the future at the expense of our mental and physical well-being. “Time waits for no one!”, I heard you referring to my previous chapter, you’ve been paying close attention! However, think about how you want to continue hustling when you are burnt out (Hint: you simply cannot).
121
Every time we rush for a deadlines, we experience a mixture of both the good and bad emotions (the thrill and stress of finishing the current work), both of which are inevitable.

A way to keep the mind fresh can be to fill your ears with music and its song lyrics. Discover new music through the “Best Seller“ Chart in Music Stores, and listen to them through the headphones provided. Note that I used the word headphones, and not allow it to blast it out loud.

FOR ‘CULTURE’,
WORKSPACE The one that would travel even during the shortest breaks.
Work with whatever you have. Work around with whatever you can.
A workplace culture has character and personality traits unique to each individual (just like you and me!) It upholds a company’s beliefs, interaction, attitude, values, and tradition. In short, it is like a person. Each company follows a different set of workplace culture, some might follow a culture more lenient than the others, but it does not determine that a stricter culture will turn out any less conducive than the latter. There are mainly two different types of workspace: co-sharing (my preferred choice) and personal type. Both have a different set of culture and environment. Hence it is important to identify the kind of workspace you will be more productive in - as your environment does affect your productivity level. As hinted, I get more productive when placed in a group setting. As constrain as an environment might be, know there are always ways to work around a situation to make it more alluring for you.
137
Think of it as a plane ride, an environment which seems so fixed and

Always start from the centre of your workspace:

140
Identify your personal culture, what you like and dislike, as well as what motivates you. Merge your company’s culture with your own. Learn to reconfigure realistically. For instance, I focus best with a wide table top, with Indie music playing through my headphones, and a warm mug of green tea.
141
141
142
Keep in mind your comfort should not come at the expense of your colleagues — they value comfort as much as you do.
Similarly to having a front passenger lean all the way back for the whole duration of your plane ride, leaving you little to almost no space to even have an occasional stretch. You would not like that experience-- so similarly, be considerate.

148
LESS IS ONLY MORE,
WHEN MORE IS NO GOOD.
Besides a physical workspace, remember you also owe a digital one on your desktop. We exist in the age of technology, so use that to your advantage. Merge your physical and digital workspace; when you utilize your computer to its fullest, it would being about endless convenience for yourself. Tear down physical post-it notes. It tends to clutter after a while (and there will be no point for writing those notes if you cannot find them). Organize and designate a place on your desktop to store relevant notes and information. This makes it easier to retrieve information and avoiding the drama of losing an important note or missing the 4 pm meeting. Recognize that your ideal workspace will not remain the same. The influence of others or even the change of the company’s culture could easily affect yours. If you realize you have not been as efficient as before, it is time to re-evaluate your workplace. Do not use a bad workspace as an excuse for your under-performance (I tend to see some of my colleagues do it at times.) Expect and accept new changes.
151
152
FOR ‘ NEIGHBOR’,
RELATIONSHIPS The one that would experiment cooking in different variety during his spare time.
I would consider a workplace environment to be similar to a community.
Think about it in this manner: people spend more time in their workplace than they do at home (which ironically we call ‘community’). They probably see their colleagues more than a family member, and being labeled a community feels more like home compared to the intimidating and cold term of “an office.” Therefore, following the culture of a typical community, I think it is only fitting for our colleagues to be called neighbors. Welcome any newcomer (regardless of part-time or full-time) into the community with open arms. Put yourself in their shoes, you were once in their position not too long ago. They are nervous and anxious — just like how you felt initially. Ditch the “I am better because I work (slightly) longer” attitude, if you ever felt that. You might have been influenced and have been on the receiving end of negative treatment when you first came in, but that is not a permissible excuse to pass it on, especially when you know how callous it felt.
155
It might be tough to interact with newcomers at first but think of it as being out of your comfort zone. Do not be afraid to integrate with new people, you were once new too.

ant to be eighbors —
Alas, a community does not imply that everything is butterflies and rainbows — there are bound to be some neighbors that you dislike despite how hard you try to like them. Maybe it lies in their entitled presumption of how they are always right or superior, or perhaps it is in their blatant sucking up to the boss. But never alas, avoiding them around the company serves no efficient purpose for both parties. You probably do not have a say of who comes and goes within a company (unless you are the boss. In that case, I do not forsee similar problem incurring). Even if you do not see eye-to-eye or agree with your neighbors, respect their personal and professional thoughts. Approach them with an open mind and treat people the way you want to be treated. Even if they are not necessarily the nicest to you, treat them with kindness.
159
160
161
However, I do believe that everyone you come across in life would play a part in your growth.
Similar to cooking, adding individual seasoning and condiment has its unique addition of flavor to the dish. An addition or not adding a particular seasoning may change the way your dish taste.

164
AVOID BEING
EXCLUSIVE. 165
166
Be humble. Similarly to you, there is surely a reason why your neighbors were hired. Learn from them as they probably know some things that you do not, and vice versa.
Think of it as boiling hard boiled eggs. A difference in timing would vary in a different type of boiled egg. Some people may prefer runnier eggs, while some might prefer fully cooked eggs, but ultimately, they still belong to the egg family. This is similar to how we are all similar – yet different, due to the different set of exposures we gained throughout our lives.
167
Of course, at the end of the day, we cannot control the actions of others, but only can self-reflect —
YOU
have been a good neighbor?
Growing up, I developed this unspoken rule and have been living by it. That is the ‘Three People and it is you’ rule. It technically is not scientifically proven but it has served me and my friends wonder all these years. So it goes as the name says: if there are more than three people who have the same kind of issue with you, then the problem probably lies in you. Maybe you are the bad neighbor. In fact all of us could be the bad neighbor at some point — nobody is perfect. Recognizing your own problem is usually the first step to solving them. If the problem is indeed yourself, the solution also lies within your control. Work on being a better version of you, and oftentimes that means change. Change it is not some sort of psychiatric medication: it requires time and effort. Do not be discouraged and seek help if needed. It is important for you to play your part as a good neighbor (for the people around you and yourself).
170
Good neighbors impel a better community for all to live in. A simple action could go a long way, and it might just be the beginning of a blossoming friendship.
172
FOR ‘ FUTURE’,
FINANCES The one that would eventually pack up and move on to greater places.
Let’s be calculative for a moment and realize that the real reason why anyone is working today is to earn money. Not to come off as materialistic, but it is indeed hard not to think that way, especially when the common question popped into my head during interviews is,
“How much is
my monthly pay
going to be? ”
Finance is such a heavy and dreadful topic – but yet important. Money is the key to our literal survival. Our shelter, food, clothes and even the laptop I’m writing on requires money. It plays a significant yet rather superficial role in the future. Understand, though, that money isn’t everything. Love, Career, Attitude—All of which (and many more other traits that I did not name) cannot be bought with money. For the longest time, your parents have probably pestered you into getting a part-time job or even nagged about how money is hard to earn. Well, at least that’s for me. Understand that their intention was not to annoy or stress you out, on the contrary, they were teaching us how to save up to avoid being financially stressed out in the future.

items. Hence this chapter is probably one I can relate the closest to.
179
This is my lesson to spend on what I need, rather than what I want. The most regrettable moment comes when I start to have a massive clean up in the house and realized that there are miscellaneous unused items hiding all over your place. I tend to do mental calculations and regret my decision to even buying it — why I bought it was even a mystery at that point. Those items were left behind when I moved house as well. With the money I spent, I could have gotten something more practical like a camera lens.
180
181
183
WE MIGHT BE IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION OF BEING IN DEBT JUST FOR LUXURY ITEMS.
With the Internet today, it is hard not to be tempted by the convenience of Online shopping (I am one of those obsessed with it). Do not be tempted into impulsions. Learn to save your money first, while keeping in mind your future financial state. When you see something, even if it is on sales, ask yourself, “Am I still going to use it in a month’s time?” If the answer is no, do not give in even if it is on half price (again, I tend to be guilty of that. Wow this chapter is full of my self-reflection thoughts!) Set a mental budget and analyze the worth of each item before purchasing. Is the price worth the quality of the item? Do you need or want the item urgently? Could you get cheaper alternatives elsewhere? Is there a possibility of a sale in the near future? If you are still keen and have been saving up for that particular item that is slightly pricier, then perhaps you really want it. Know that it is okay to let yourself indulge in your wants once in a while. After all, it is your hard-earned money. Do not be too hard on yourself. Just refrain from “indulging” in yourself too often. Today with the convenience of cashless payment, it is so much easier to overspend without our own knowledge. Something about the swipe of a card, a scan of a bar-code, and the keying of your pin number on a phone screen make it hard to keep track of the amount of money we all have in our accounts.
185
Hence, Online banking will be your new best friend. Not only does it save time and paper, but you also will not be late for another payment. In addition, you are able to keep track of all your accounts from the comfort of your phone. Paying off bills have never been made easier (for now)! Make it a habit to keep the receipts of all your spending and crosscheck it with your bills when the time comes. That is a habit my dad made me follow at a very young age, and has been proven to be helpful.
186
Skip the queue at the bank.
187
188
One thing I would advise paying for would be insurance for yourself. As clichĂŠ as it sounds, it definitely is necessary. Just like how vulnerable and fragile items have to be protected with bubble wrap when packing, protect your life with financial insurance as well. Do it to protect yourself, before it is too late.
189
A wrong move could snowball into greater worries of unpaid bills.
If you need any financial help, head down to the people in local banks that can assist you. Never seek illegal means from people like loan sharks or gambling dents. Be very careful. If you were to choose to visit financial consultants, many of them may undoubtedly be reputable, but some schemes offered are just good to be true. Trust your instincts and evaluate the situation yourself. I am sure television programs have portrayed plots of financial schemes much time, so do not be a victim of it. Should you be having more doubts about your financial issues or question the need to spend money on consultants, seek out advice from family members that you know are trustworthy. Understand that they cannot solve all your financial problems, in fact not even the financial consultants can, they are only able to support and guide you based on their own experience – which sometimes is really all that you need.
191
We are still young and had just started to hustle in society today, and it is only natural that we do not have the instant luxury of having a high spending power. If you cannot control your financial spendings, cancel your credit card. As harsh as it might sound, it is the most effective solution (trial and tested on yours truly – yes it works.). Only consider getting it back if you manage to survive without it for three months or so. Work hard and adapt the right attitude for your spendings; Carefully save for your future,
