DESIGN THOUGHTS!

The state of power supply in Nigeria can be summed up in two words “Up Nepa”. These words

illustrate the erratic state of supply where chants accompany the lighting of a bulb. For many Nigerians, constant electricity supply only means

one thing; it is the end of the month and the electricity bill is soon to be delivered.

Buying of illegal connections Electric fires and electrocutions were common due to some of the lines hanging on the electric pole haphazardly Constant Increase of Electricity Tariff leading to Frequent Vandalisms of PHCN properties Blackouts from overworked transformers due to the many connections

As the community looks to tackle its yawning energy gap, with a Large number of people having no access to adequate electricity, it is turning to alternative, low cost and sustainable

source of energy to bridge this deficit. Numerous interventions

have

been

rolled

out

before,

targeting the bottom of the pyramid but mostly in the rural areas that are not connected to national grids.

Solar Energy is sometimes viewed as a niche resource with a useful but limited potential. However, it is probably the only long term- supply side energy solution that is both large enough, cheap and acceptable enough to sustain the planet's long term requirements.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR ENERGY and maybe WIND too

The goal of this proposal is to provide a framework with which to produce adequate electricity for the Iwaya Community. The integration of both the solar and the wind

Zappz

WHY INVEST IN SOLAR?

Energy poverty is a widespread problem and from survey we’ve estimated that more 50 percent in the community do not have access to electricity. This has serious implications for community and their

livelihoods. Renewable energy, particularly from solar, provides a vast new alternative, zero emissions energy system that can be deployed across the community with far less technical headaches. Transitioning to solar also creates far more energy certainty because it reduces the risk of being reliant on

importing

from

energy-producing

nations,

especially in times of conflict.

The goal of this proposal is to provide a framework with which to produce adequate electricity for the Iwaya Community. The integration of both the solar and the wind

Zappz

LET’S HYBRIDIZE IT!

Although Solar energy is the preferred energy source because of its unlimited nature, Iwaya’s closeness to the water makes the idea of integrating the wind in conjunction with solar energy much more sensible. For one you'll have the sun producing energy during the day and the wind generating it at night and

batteries stores the energy up for days. Politically, its wild and ambitious but technologically, it’s achievable. The uncertainty that comes with no back up plan is mitigated because then there's fluid and flexible generation of electricity. You're not depending so much on solar alone or wind alone and if anything happens this hybrid system will provide an uninterrupted power supply.

The goal of this proposal is to provide a framework with which to produce adequate electricity for the Iwaya Community. The integration of both the solar and the wind

Zappz

THE TRANSMISSION The substation servicing the community of Iwaya

i.e.

the

Akoka

substation

lies

somewhere in the university of Lagos. So the

electricity coming from the grid and at the power generator of each building will need some sort of step-down transformer, and the transformers being a major element in the distribution of electricity will be put in each cluster to service them.

Existing distribution cables

The goal of this proposal is to provide a framework with which to produce adequate electricity for the Iwaya Community. The integration of both the solar and the wind

Zappz

DISTRIBUTION…BOTH? When I hear the word power line, the image of that overhead line on my street comes to my mind first. This is very normal because I am used to seeing overhead lines in my neighbourhood. Now imagine, there are no messy cables over your head. Ah! I cant even begin to phatom how beautiful the streets will be is what I think but on a second thought, there's this little issues of efficiency. Both of them have advantages and disadvantages depending on various factors. Determining if power lines should be overhead or underground boils down to what is best for the situation.

The goal of this proposal is to provide a framework with which to produce adequate electricity for the Iwaya Community. The integration of both the solar and the wind

Zappz

Why use both? Underground lines is ideal in situations where we want to keep the poles and wires out of sight, such as the residential clusters, the open spaces or parks, or maybe even the famous Iwaya market. Overhead systems work well when appearance is not a major concern. Examples include the roads, both minor and major and across clusters where the voltages can be higher than the limitations set for underground lines and more efficient. The combination of both the underground and overhead construction used provides the community with the highest possible quality of service at the lowest possible price. All the different variables and

future upgrades will drive which is the better approach, overhead or underground but for now I stick with both.

The goal of this proposal is to provide a framework with which to produce adequate electricity for the Iwaya Community. The integration of both the solar and the wind

VISION! •

Transform Iwaya into a pleasant space at night by providing further opportunities of entertainment and enriching urban life quality through suitably lighting an area, facilitating the extended use of the parks and open areas.

Provide safe and secure environment to the community and properly light up urban spaces at nighttime.

Help to add further dynamics to Iwaya mage by creating safe and well lit traffic routes for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.

Emphasize the structure and identity of Iwaya enhancing its image, Increasing its attractiveness to its dwellers by means of functional and architectural lighting.

Paths and Edges - A pedestrian’s and driver’s vision The site is bounded by a major road which is on the west i.e. Salami road and three minor roads.

Walkable Neighbourhood Having streetlights lights on Iwaya road helps to add further dynamics to its image by creating safe, well lit traffic routes for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. It also makes night-time a bit legible and a lot more

interesting.

So Solar powered Bollards with warm white lights for the Trails because of their unique pedestrian-scale and good colour rendering that allows for the differentiation of the trails in the park from the surrounding areas of the neighbourhood.

Walkable Neighbourhood Another thing Iwaya is known for is its many paths and alleys. It’s a quiet, serene neighborhood that has been structured in such a way that the way their buildings are arranged allows for this one space with multiple access routes. Lighting up the

gateways into these spaces will help further in securing the community and wayfinding with reference points. The alleys will also be lit with warm white light.

So Solar powered Bollards with

warm white lights for the Trails because of their unique pedestrian-scale and good colour rendering that allows for

superb lighting.

Districts and Landmarks - The Urban Public; Parks, Communal spaces, Courtyards

I recommend the use of Warm gold white string lights in the market to transform it into a pleasant space further attracting visitors to the markets providing

them.

For

the

courtyards and urban parks, the solar-powered

the

characters of the different spaces and elements, encouraging the residents to use the spaces because

it

gives

more

entertainment, and facilitates the extended use of both the park and market. It is especially important

to remember that in residential neighbourhoods like Iwaya, particular attention should be paid to the aesthetic quality of the light design and installation at the same time so as to take equal care to avoid light pollution.
