Hoo’s Tips The Zika virus is an illness that is spread to humans, in most cases, by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes can also carry others diseases, like dengue, and they bite aggressively both during the day and at night. The Zika virus only recently arrived in the Western hemisphere. Since it first appeared in Brazil in 2015, it has spread through Latin America and the Caribbean, infecting thousands of people. In late July, the CDC confirmed the first cases of local transmission of the Zika virus in the US, in an area near Miami, Florida. What are the symptoms? The symptoms of a Zika infection include sore joints, fever, a rash, and red eyes. Although it is rare, some people infected by the Zika virus can develop GuillianBarre syndrome (GBS). This is a condition where the body’s immune system attacks nerve cells, leading to muscle weakness and sometimes to temporary paralysis. Some people who are infected by the Zika virus don’t have any symptoms and so they don’t know they have been infected.

What are the risks? For most people, a Zika infection will be a mild illness. However, a pregnant woman infected with the Zika virus can pass the infection to her unborn baby. In Brazil, doctors have confirmed a suspected connection between unborn babies being infected by the Zika virus and a birth defect called microcephaly. Microcephaly is a rare condition in which an infant’s head is much smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and the same sex. It is a neurological condition that results from abnormal brain development before birth or the brain not growing as it should after birth. Babies with this condition often experience developmental delays.

virus facts Although most people who develop GBS syndrome fully recover, a few may experience permanent damage. The good news is that the body develops immunity to the Zika virus after being infected, so someone is unlikely to be infected more than once.

How can it be prevented? Pregnant women should avoid traveling to areas affected by the Zika virus. This may include some parts of the southern US, since cases of locally transmitted Zika infections have now been reported in Florida. When planning a trip, check the travel advisories issued by the CDC. These advisories identify the areas where the Zika virus is actively being transmitted from mosquitoes to humans. If visiting an area affected by the Zika virus is necessary, wear insect repellents registered with the EPA and cover up your arms and legs with long sleeves and pants. EPA registered insect repellants are safe even for pregnant women and young children. Always apply the insect repellent according to the directions on the packaging. There have been cases documented of the Zika virus being spread through sex, so use protection after visiting an area infested by mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus.

HOO’s HEALTHY

The influenza virus, also known as ‘the flu’, is a very contagious respiratory illness. The numbers of flu cases increase in the fall and winter, especially between the months of October and February. Influenza can be a severe illness, especially for very young infants, the elderly and pregnant women. It is estimated that several thousand people die from the flu every year in the US.

It is recommended that everyone 6 months and older receive a flu shot each year to decrease the likelihood of catching the flu. The vaccine does not completely protect someone from catching the flu, but if a vaccinated person does come down with the flu, the symptoms will probably be less severe. In the past, when taking your child to the pediatrician for a flu vaccine, you may have had a choice between the live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also called the ‘nasal spray’ flu vaccine, and the flu shot vaccine containing an inactivated virus. For the 2016- 2017 flu season, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has decided that the nasal spray flu vaccine will not be used. The decision was based upon statistics that show the nasal spray vaccine was not very effective in preventing the flu in the previous year. During last year’s flu season, the nasal spray vaccine only reduced the chances of contracting the flu by 3% and performed poorly in comparison with the flu shot. The nasal spray flu vaccine was used by pediatricians last year for about a third of the kids in the age group of 2 to 8 years. Some people are allergic to eggs (one of the ingredients of the flu shot), so consult your child’s doctor to see if the flu shot is right for them. The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to work and will last for about 12 months. So don’t wait, vaccinate as soon as your doctor’s office has the vaccine available!

HOO’S at the Movies Wise Choices for You & Your Family

STORKS Rated PG | Ok for kids 6+

Storks deliver babies - or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world. This cute family movie features an all-star voice cast, including Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston.

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN PG | Ok for kids 10+

Directed by Tim Burton, this fantastical film is based on the best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs. When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is. Asa Butterfield, Eva Green, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson star.

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN Rated PG-13 | Ok for kids 13+

Reminiscent of “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club,” this film offers an honest, candid look at what it’s like to grow up as a young woman in today’s modern world. Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all. Directed by Kelly Fremon, this movie also stars Kyra Sedgwick as Nadine’s well-meaning but completely ineffective mother, and Woody Harrelson as Nadine’s History teacher, mentor and reluctant sounding board.

SULLY PG-13 | Ok for kids 14+

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and career. Clint Eastwood directs from a screenplay by Todd Komarnicki, based on the book “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters,” by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow. Also stars Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.

THE WILD LIFE PG | Ok for kids 6+

From the exuberant parrot Tuesday to the snack-obsessed tapir Rosie, things are larger-than-life on a tropical island that is a paradise for wild animals in this CG-animated family movie directed by Vincent Kesteloot. When Robinson Crusoe, a marooned human, arrives in the midst of a furious storm, their lives are forever changed by this bewildering new “creature.” No matter their differences, castaway human and quirky animals embark on a hilarious adventure to build a tree-house and survive together. But when two conniving members of the animal kingdom - savage cats Mal and May - pounce into a battle for control of the island, Crusoe and his animal posse must uncover the true power of friendship.

Kids Dig Dinosaurs

A kid’s first introduction to dinosaurs has become a childhood rite of passage in this century. Even though they haven’t roamed the earth in millions of years, dinosaurs have surged to the front of the pack among creatures that stir kids’ imaginations. The following titles are delightful early introductions to dinosaurs that younger children will really sink their teeth into!

Dino-Baby

By Mark Sperring, Illustrated by Sam Lloyd (Bloomsbury)

Dino-Baby follows a sweet dinosaur family as they prepare their child for the arrival of a new baby. The older sister learns the importance of quiet time during naps as well as the joys of baby dino kisses. Teaching the baby good manners and how to use the potty are also important things that an older dino sibling can help with. It’s a special privilege for older siblings to be the one to introduce new arrivals in their family to the wonderful world of dinosaurs. “Dino-Baby” is both an ideal baby-on-the-way title as well as a sweet picture book introduction to dinosaurs that a big sibling can look forward to sharing with the new baby.

If I Had a Raptor By George O’Connor (Candlewick Press)

What would it be like to adopt a raptor and keep it as a pet? In this book, a young girl wants to have all her bases covered before bringing a dinosaur into the family. It would need cozy places to curl up in and sunny spots to stretch out in. She’s sure that her raptor would sleep all day (and run around all night). As the girl’s visions of a raptor as a pet expand, young readers may begin to pick up the similarities between pet raptors and pets of a feline variety. With illustrations that profile the cat-like behaviors a raptor might exhibit, this is a delightful musing on adopting a dinosaur as a pet.

Dinosaur Kisses

By David Ezra Stein (Candlewick)

As soon as baby Dinah emerged from her egg, she was ready to explore her great big world. She wastes no time stomping and chomping her way around it. But when she sees a kiss for the first time, Dinah knows that it’s something that she wants to try, too. Unfortunately when she tries to pucker up for a kiss, she accidentally eats her target instead. Just as it seems that kissing isn’t something that is going to work out for Dinah, another option is revealed. A perfect partner breaks out to help her whomp, stomp, and chomp her way to a kiss that works for dinosaurs like her.

HOO’s PARENTING HOW TO HANDLE

AGGRESSIVE TODDLERS Toddlers under the age of 3 often resort to biting and other aggressive behavior to express frustration since they don’t yet have the language skills to put their feelings into words. For some toddlers, the aggressive behavior is not limited to just one incident but becomes a disturbing pattern. Here are some tips on how to discourage and prevent aggressive toddler behavior. First, when your toddler bites or pushes someone, immediately say ‘Oh no, we don’t hurt others’ and remove him to a quiet time-out area where he can cool down in solitude. Then, lavish attention on the victim. Your child will see that he does not receive extra attention by acting aggressively and, in addition, has to sit out when he misbehaves. It is important to teach your toddler that aggressive behavior is a serious offense by consistently enforcing the rules right away. He will learn there are no warnings or second chances when it comes to hitting or biting, only time alone in the quiet area. Once your toddler cools down, it is time to have a discussion with him about the incident. Your goal is to find out what may have triggered his aggressive behavior and to review with him what he should do the next time he feels frustrated. Remind him that biting, hitting,

and pushing are not OK. Also, that he should ask an adult for help mediating disagreements if he has asked nicely to share a toy or take a turn on the swing and the other child is not interested in sharing. Before letting your child return to the play area, have him apologize to the victim. Toddlers don’t yet have the ability to empathize well with others, but it is never too early to start working on the social skill of saying ‘I am sorry.’ Next, start taking steps to prevent future incidents of aggressive behavior. Remind your toddler of the rules at the beginning of his next play date and watch him carefully for signs of frustration. Step in quickly and remind him ‘no biting’ or ‘no pushing’ when you sense something is about to happen. If needed, cool down the situation by redirecting your child’s attention to another toy or activity. Also, be on the lookout for good

behavior and praise him generously when he is kind to others. If you consistently discipline your toddler when he displays aggressive behavior and provide plenty of positive reinforcement, your toddler should begin to learn that being kind has a much more desirable outcome than hitting or biting others does. However, if you have tried everything and your toddler’s aggressive behavior does not improve, it may be time to search deeper for a possible cause. Is your child upset over having to move or having to share mom’s attention with a new sibling? If your toddler has experienced changes at home or at school, he may be using aggressive behavior to express his feelings of distress. Your child’s doctor or a child psychologist can assist you with identifying the underlying cause of the aggressive behavior and help you develop a plan to stop it.

chickenpox

Chickenpox is a childhood disease characterized by a rash of itchy red bumps. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and is very contagious to those who have not had it. The rash typically appears 1 to 2 days after the initial symptoms of fever, sore throat, cough, or stomachache. New spots appear over a period of several days, and chickenpox is contagious until all the bumps have crusted over. In otherwise healthy children, chickenpox takes only about a week to runs its course. After that, the varicella-zoster virus lies dormant within the body but may reactivate and cause a painful condition called shingles later in life. For most children, chickenpox is a mild disease that can be treated at home, without a visit to the doctor. However, chickenpox can occasionally lead to serious complications, including bacterial skin infections that then spread throughout the body, meningitis, pneumonia, and toxic shock syndrome. Adults, teens,

pregnant women, infants, and those with a compromised immune system or health problems like asthma are especially at risk for these serious complications. The varicella vaccine has greatly reduced the reported cases of chickenpox each year and the number of hospitalizations due to serious chickenpox complications. Before the introduction of the varicella vaccine, almost 90% of people in the US had already had chickenpox before reaching adulthood, 10,600 people a year were hospitalized due to chickenpox complications, and about 100 people died from complications each year. Some parents purposefully expose their unvaccinated young kids to chickenpox so they will catch it naturally and receive lifelong immunity. However, health experts recommend that kids receive the varicella vaccination instead, due to the risk of complications from chickenpox and the possibility that the virus will reappear later in life as shingles.

DRAW OUT THE INNER ARTIST! Every child is an artist. Some kids draw things they love in the world around them. Others draw and paint images that are completely born from their imaginations. With increasing competition for kids’ attention in a world full of tablets, smart-phones and other gadgetry – the following drawing tools for kids have just the right amount of modern marvel to bridge the divide between traditional drawing and newer technologies.

Aquadoodle Travel ‘N Doodle

(Spinmaster)

The name is a big hint toward the basic premise of this portable drawing tablet. Instead of carrying around piles of paper and markers, the Aquadoodle Travel ‘N Doodle set includes a two-sided drawing surface, a ‘pen’ and a carrying case. The pen is essentially a water marker (refillable with water that saturates the tip) that interacts with the drawing surfaces. No ink to spill, crayons to melt, pencils to sharpen, markers losing caps, etc. Emptying the water from the pen, or sealing it in a plastic bag before transport, ensures that the surfaces stay dry and are instantly ready for art to happen. When a drawing is complete, simply allow the surface to dry and it will soon return to a white blank, ready for the next artistic pass!

Ingenio Smart Projector

(Ingenio)

The Ingenio Smart Projector uses a powerful LED light to project traceable images onto a drawing surface for small hands to follow with crayons or other marking mediums. The traceable image collection includes the alphabet, numbers, as well as 24 animal pictures with each named in Spanish and English. The projector can adjust the size of images as young hands hone their fine motor control. With sturdy image discs and simple controls, the Smart Projector allows little hands to operate and direct their drawing independently. It’s a bright tool for supporting the early skills of young artists and writers!

IDO3D Design Studio

(IDO3D)

3D printing is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in engineering and technology. And the method behind the printing has already translated into a tool for the younger set to employ for their own artistic ideas. The pens extrude a melted plastic which quickly cools into the shape as it was “drawn.” Using layers and connections, young artists quickly begin to develop the ability to draw in 3D, lifting their artistic visions off the flat page and building them into a whole new dimension. The studio includes enough material for up to 25 projects, and replacement pens are available for 3D artists who want to expand their body of work in this new frontier of drawing.

WATER!

Drinking enough water each day to keep your body well hydrated and healthy is important. However, there are many misleading myths about water and its health benefits that are sometimes hard to separate fact from fiction.

HOO’s FIT You need to drink eight ounces of water colorless or a pale yellow color. When eight times a day to stay properly hydrated. you exercise, you need to hydrate This is a myth, as there is no scientific support for this rule, often referred to as the ‘8 by 8 rule.’ The Institute of Medicine recommends about 13 cups (3 liters) of water a day for men and about 9 cups (2.2 liters) of water a day for women. However, what the ‘8 by 8 rule’ does not take into account is that much of this water is contained in the food we eat and the other beverages we drink. In addition, the amount of water someone needs can vary greatly, since it depends upon factors like weight, environment, and activity level.

well before, during, and after your workout. Also, pregnant women and nursing moms need to take in extra water. If you need help determining if you are taking in enough water, consult your doctor or a nutritionist.

HOO’s CRAFTY popsicle stick

homemade plinko It’s amazing how much fun kids can have with something as simple as popsicle stick plinko, but this easy craft will have them guessing where the marble will land, for hours.

Directions Grab an empty carboard box. We used an empty Amazon shipping box, but you could use shoe boxes, cereal boxes, etc. Our box was too shallow, so we cut it down and I used duct tape to cover the edges of it. Now is the time to use a good, sharp pair of scissors to cut the sticks in half. Older kids should be able to do this, but ‘littles’ will probably need your help.

Celebrate our Heritage

Fly your Flag In honor of Constitution Week

Sept 17-23 SPONSORED BY:

HOO’s NEWS

Constitution Week Sept 17-23

September 17 begins the national celebration of Constitution Week. The weeklong commemoration of America’s most important document is one of our country’s least known official observances. Our Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties and freedom, and to ensure those inalienable rights to every American.

The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The aims of the celebration are to (1) emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it for posterity; (2) inform the people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and (3) encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

The United States of America functions as a Republic under the Constitution, which is the oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people. This landmark idea that men had the inalienable right as individuals to be free and live their lives under their own governance was the impetus of the American Revolution. Today, the Constitution stands as an icon of freedom for people around the world. “Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties,” states DAR President General, Lynn Forney Young. “We encourage all citizens across the country to take time this week to reflect on our heritage of freedom and come together to Celebrate America!” To learn more about the constitution and read it, visit: www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution.html.

being active adds to kids’ brain power Kids who enjoy lots of physical activity are doing more than just having fun; they’re improving their brain structure, brain function and academic prowess according to a new consensus statement published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. A group of 24 researchers from the United States, Canada and Europe examined the latest scientific and medical research on the benefits of exercise in kids, ages 6 to 18 years old. Experts from a variety of disciplines evaluated the values of all kinds of exercise, including recess, physical education classes, youth sports leagues and old-fashioned outdoor play. The researchers noted that: • Physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness are good for children’s and young people’s brain development and function as well as their intellect • A session of physical activity before, during, and after school boosts academic prowess • A single session of moderately energetic physical activity has immediate positive effects on brain function, intellect, and academic performance • Mastery of basic movement boosts brain power and academic performance • Time taken away from lessons in favor of physical activity does not come at the cost of getting good grades In terms of the physiological benefits of exercise, the statement says that cardiorespiratory and

muscular fitness “are strong predictors” of the risk of developing heart disease and type2 diabetes in later life, and that vigorous exercise in childhood helps to keep these risk factors in check. Even low intensity exercise will help improve kids’ heart health and their metabolism. But the positive effects of exercise are not restricted to physical health, says the statement. Regular physical activity can help develop important life skills, and boost self-esteem, motivation, confidence and wellbeing. It may also play a role in strengthening /fostering relationships with peers, parents, and coaches. Just as importantly, activities that take account of culture and context can promote social inclusion for those from different backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientation, skill levels and physical capacity. Incorporating physical activity into every aspect of school life and providing protected public spaces, such as bike lanes, parks and playgrounds “are both effective strategies for providing equitable access to, and enhancing physical activity for, children and youth,” says the statement. With school being back in session now, and most kids being saddled in a desk for a great portion of the day, it is super important to take time each day to let your little ones be physically active. Family walks before dinner, throwing a baseball out in the yard, or even just dancing around the house, will not only help their brains, it will help with bonding and decompressing from our busy days.

Hoo’s helpful Entryway As the first and last access point of your home, a lot of activity occurs here. Coats, scarves, hats and bags are dropped everywhere, while dirty shoes are kicked off and left behind. To control your unruly entryway, try creating a drop zone near the door. The addition of a coat rack or hooks make it easy to hang up outerwear, while a storage bench is a convenient place to take off shoes and neatly stow them away. Kitchen Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, many family members congregate here. Establish a corner of the kitchen counter to drop lunch boxes, bottles and coffee mugs used throughout the day. To prevent a pile-up of papers and misplaced items, set up a command center with enough space to file mail and bills and store your keys and other small essentials. Living Room Depending on the size of your living room and how you use the space, you may need to establish several drop zones. For example, a coffee table tray or basket is ideal for storing remotes and chargers. Add storage cubes as a convenient place to store and hide laptop cords, tablets, gaming equipment and children’s toys. Consider labeling a bin for each family member to store their stuff. Bedroom To clear clothing clutter, use a valet rod to hang up tomorrow’s outfit or clothes that need to be taken to the tailor or dry cleaner. Additionally, try designating a dresser drawer as a drop zone for jewelry, watches, or other valuables.

Control the

Clutter with Drop Zones

After returning home from a long day at work, a weekend soccer tournament or an all-day shopping excursion, it’s natural to want to drop everything and relax. However, literally dropping everything can cause a tremendous amount of clutter in the home, leading to stress, misplaced items and wasted time. To eliminate the clutter that busy lifestyles create, try establishing designated drop zones throughout your house to regain a sense of order. Don’t worry, you can still drop everything and relax when you come home – just drop everything in the right spot.
