HIGH TECH BABY GEAR If you are a first time mom-to-be, you probably have started compiling your list of baby items to purchase or add to your baby shower registry. Baby gadgets have gone high tech but they can be expensive and there can be a confusing number of variations of them to choose from. Are they a good use of the baby gear budget or an unnecessary expense? Let’s investigate.

Hand Held Baby Timer: These gadgets allow you to record when diaper changings and feedings occurred as well as other information about your baby’s daily routine. However, a smart phone app that costs $5 or less could be used to do the same thing, if you must go high tech and don’t wish to use only paper and pencil. Baby Motion Monitors: Many new parents consider getting an expensive motion monitor for their newborn in an effort to help prevent SIDS. However, the FDA points out there is no proof these monitors prevent SIDS. The best way to prevent SIDS is to follow the SIDS prevention guidelines for infant sleep position and environment. Often, parents who wish to keep a close eye on their baby’s sleep end up putting the crib or bassinet in their room for the first few months, making a monitor unnecessary.

If your baby is healthy, this is one item you may be able to leave off your list. However, if you have concerns about your baby’s sleep due to a family history of breathing problems while sleeping, consult your baby’s pediatrician. The doctor may prescribe your baby a monitor.

to mom or dad in a sling carrier. In this case, the expensive bouncer or swing gets little use. Also, if your goal is to soothe baby to sleep and provide a place for him to nap, a traditional, less expensive swing may work just as well.

handy item for parents of fussy babies who have trouble dozing off and staying asleep. White noise machines come in many forms, even that of a teddy bear. If you want to see if white noise will lull your baby to sleep but don’t want to purchase an expensive white noise machine, try out one of the white noise apps for smart phones.

a lot easier than using a rectal thermometer, but according to research, pacifier thermometers are not very accurate and can take from three to five minutes to get a reading. If you don’t want to use a rectal thermometer, the next best option when it comes to accuracy is a forehead (temporal artery) thermometer.

High Tech Bouncer/Swing: You may have seen the Bluetooth-enabled baby bouncers and baby swings and wondered if they are worth the investment. Some parents find that baby rejects the idea of being placed in a bouncer or swing but is quite happy being carried close

Video Baby Monitor: This high tech item allows you to see what is going on in your baby’s room. It can be a big help if you have a large house or you need to spy on your young toddler to see if he is trying to climb the furniture instead of taking his nap. The only con is the price.

Pacifier Thermometer: This may White Noise Machine: This is a very sound like a great innovation and

HOO’s HEALTHY It’s easy to get caught up in a hectic schedule of activities, but don’t let the summer hustle keep you from a healthy lifestyle. Enjoying the summer is about balance and planning.

1. Fuel up Start the day with a complete breakfast for sustained energy. Stock up on easy go-to snacks like fresh fruit and granola bars so you’re ready when stomachs start to growl. Keep liquids within reach and refilled for easy hydration.

2. Set a schedule

Healthy summer habits of tag, skating and swimming, find something your family loves doing together. You can also get some extra steps in by taking an after-dinner walk around the block each night.

4. Unplug

Create a master calendar to hang up in your kitchen. This should include everyone’s daily activities for the summer so nothing is forgotten. Take a look at the calendar at the beginning of each week to get a sense of what’s to come.

While it’s important to let your kids stay connected to friends and peers during the summer, you should also be aware of your family’s technology use. For example, you could make a pact to put away devices at dinner time and two hours before bedtime. Find an approach to regulating technology that works for you.

3. Remain active

5. Maintain sleeping habits

Encourage your kids to get outside by planning a weekly outdoor activity as a family. From hiking, biking, a game

Your kids will likely want to stay up later in the summer, but make sure they’re still getting adequate sleep. Work as a team to make sleep a family priority.

Hoo’s Tips

Summer

Makeup Tips It may seem easier to eliminate makeup from your beauty routine altogether in the summer, rather than having it melt away. However, for the events you don’t want to attend au naturel, here are some hot weather makeup tips that will keep you looking fabulous from start to finish!

Apply a primer Apply a primer over a light hydrating lotion that contains SPF. The SPF helps block damaging UV rays, and the primer helps keep your foundation in place. Some beauty experts warn against silicone primers, due to a concern that

these products may dry out the skin. The experts also warn against using too much primer, which could give your skin a dull look. Choose the right foundation A liquid or gel foundation will last longer in the heat and humidity than a cream. However, in the summer, don’t use an overly heavy product. Put your foundation on in light layers. As far as blush goes, experts advise choosing a cream blush instead of a powder blush, since a cream blush is easier to reapply to damp skin. Choose a cream blush that goes on with a dry finish. Also, to reduce

shine on the go without messing up your makeup, try using blotting papers. Double up on your eye makeup For a look that survives the heat, try using a non-creasing cream eye shadow under a powder eye shadow. Then, increase the staying power of your eye liner by first applying a liquid liner and then tracing over it with a powder shadow to lock it into place. Lighten up on the lipstick Put aside heavy, glossy lipstick and go with a sheer, lightly colored balm instead, preferably with sunscreen.

TIPS FROM TEACHER

It is almost time to prepare to send the kids back to school. Here are some helpful tips, provided by experienced teachers, on how to get the school year started out right. Connect with your child’s teacher. Attend the ‘Meet the Teacher ‘ event before the school year starts and introduce yourself. Let your child’s teacher know you want to keep communication open and that you are willing to provide her with any helpful information.

remember that spending time with your child before and during the school year is more important than what you buy him. Use teamwork. If you do get a phone call from the teacher, understand the teacher is trying to help your child. She is not calling just because she enjoys criticizing him. Avoid the urge to immediately defend your child and listen to what the teacher has to say. You and your child’s teacher are working towards the same goal, your child’s success.

fish aquarium

In just a few minutes, you can turn household items into the perfect, toddler’s first aquarium. This easy craft could also liven up a playroom, or bathroom, or make a cute gift.

Directions Glue a handful of cereal to the bottom of the blue side of the first plate, to mimic the gravel in a fish tank. Now, cut out fish and plants from colorful paper and glue to the plate. Then add googly eyes to your fish. Glue tri-beads to the cereal, to give the tank some flair. If you don’t have beads you can use glitter, or paint, etc. Cut the center out of the second paper plate and glue it to the front of the aquarium. Now you’re ready for a little aquatic fun!

HOO’S at the Movies THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS Rated PG | Ok for kids 6+

For one Manhattan apartment building, after the humans leave for work and school, the pets begin their own nine-to-five routine: hanging out, trading stories, and trying new adorable looks. The building’s top dog, Max (voiced by Louis C.K.), a quick-witted terrier rescue who’s the center of his owner’s universe, finds his life rocked when she brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a sloppy, mess of a mongrel with zero social skills. When this reluctant canine duo finds themselves out on the mean streets of New York, they have to set aside their differences and unite against a bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart), who’s building an army of Ex-Pets abandoned by their owners and out to turn the tables on humanity ... all before dinnertime.

THE BFG PG | Ok for kids 7+

Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. The BFG, aka Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance), is not like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24 feet tall, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and scary and have been known to eat humans. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, meets The BFG. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, so she and the BFG head for London to see Queen Victoria (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants exist.

THE LEGEND OF TARZAN Rated PG-13 | Ok for kids 13+

It’s been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side. Now, he’s been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he’s a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash. Directed by David Yates, this reboot also stars Samuel L. Jackson and Djimon Hounsou.

STAR TREK BEYOND PG-13 | Ok for kids 14+

“Star Trek Beyond” hits theaters as the franchise celebrates 50 years this year. Now Chris Pine is carrying the role into the future, along with Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov). Little is known about the plot at this writing, but we do know it revolves around the Enterprise being attacked by a wave of aliens, leaving the crew stranded on a new planet where they find themselves in conflict, which is basically the plot of every Star Trek movie and TV episode, but somehow they manage to make it fresh and new every time. Directed by Justin Lin, this movie also stars Bruce Greenwood, Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella.

ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE PG | Ok for kids 6+

Scrat is STILL on that epic pursuit of the elusive acorn. This time it catapults him into the universe where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the Ice Age World. To save themselves, Sid, Manny, Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a journey to exotic new lands, encountering a host of colorful new characters along the way. Directed by Mike Thurmeier, this movie features the voices of returning cast members Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Simon Pegg, Keke Palmer, Wanda Sykes, and Jennifer Lopez. Joining the herd are Stephanie Beatriz, Adam DeVine, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Max Greenfield, Jessie J, Nick Offerman, Melissa Rauch, Michael Strahan and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

HOO’s HEALTHY

keeping your kids safe near the water The time of year has come, when kids are swimming and splashing in pools and lakes across America. Before your little one grabs his or her swimsuit and dives in, now’s the time to refresh your memory on water safety. According to a new federal report, drowning kills more American children, ages 1 to 4 years old, than any cause except birth defects. Half drown in swimming pools and males are four times more likely to drown than females. As bad as drowning is, more people suffer injuries or near drowning. Between 2005 and 2009, more than 3,800 people of all ages drowned annually nationwide. Another 5,700 people went to the hospital in near-drowning incidents. Of these, 50 percent were hospitalized or transferred for additional care, the report’s authors said. Many of the survivors suffered irreversible brain damage said the report’s co-author Dr. Julie Gilchrist, a medical epidemiologist in the CDC’s Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention. Research has shown that swimming lessons- for kids 1 to 4- can be a lifesaver. “It would be really nice for children to have the skills so they can manage themselves in the rare event that they end up in the water and survive long enough so parents can find them and get them out,” Gilchrist said. Little kids are more likely to sneak into a pool, or accidentally fall in. Many times parents are not aware that their child is outside of the house. That’s why barriers are so important. “That’s why you have to have barriers, something that will slow down your child’s access to the water,” noted Gilchrist.

Never leave a toy in or around a pool.

l

Never leave a child alone in or near a pool.

l

Make sure an adult is always within arm’s length.

Children ages 1 to 4 years old should take swimming lessons. But remember that teaching children to swim does not guarantee their safety in the water. l

Teach children to never run, push or jump on others around water. Teach them never to swim alone.

l

l Keep a phone by the pool, along with rescue equipment, such as a life preserver and a shepherd’s hook -- a long pole with a hook at the end. l Pools should be surrounded by a fence at least 4-feet high. Pool gates should self-close and selflatch at a height unreachable by small children. l If you have an inflatable or plastic pool, empty it after each use and turn it upside down.

Summer is the season when families are able to spend more together and enjoy outdoor activities. As temperatures rise, many will be at the pool cooling down. Practice the water safety tips listed above and have a fabulous time!

GAMES KIDS CAN25 CONNECT WITH! Making connections is one of the most rewarding tactile experiences kids can enjoy. Finding out which peg fits in which hole, discovering what puzzle piece fits where, are achievements that generate a strong sense of satisfaction in children. Introducing kids to toys and games that explore connections supports their spatial thinking and problem-solving skills in fun and creative ways. The following items are guaranteed to connect with kids fast!

Gears Gears Gears

(Learning Resources)

Puzzling out the ways that gears and cogs interlock is just the beginning as small hands explore how to get them connected and make them start moving. Large, colorful, uniformly-sized plastic gears easily link together in both horizontal and vertical planes to create mechanically moving assemblies. This set comes with base plates, pillars, extenders, plus an awesome activity book to help early engineers establish their first connections. Supporting fine motor skills as well as problem-solving skills, Gears Gears Gears gives kids confidence to craft their own moving marvels.

Goobi

(Goobi)

The Goobi Construction Set is an ideal early exploration of threedimensional geometry for kids. Colorful rods (with magnets embedded in the ends) connect with round iron ball “joints” to form multiple shapes and structures with ease. The illustrated instruction book offers additional projects that explore the attractive and repulsive properties of magnetism safely. This Goobi set is best enjoyed by kids who have the attention span and motor skills to fully explore the possibilities of this fun collection. Fostering an understanding of architecture, Goobi is great for future designers.

Qubits

(Qubits)

Deceptively simple, the 42 pieces of colorful plastic segments in the travel-sized Qubits pack inspire a broad range of projects for kids of all ages. Fostering an early understanding of modular design and geometry, Qubits snap together to form versatile shapes and structures. Additionally, Qubits are also compatible with LEGO, K’nex, Hot Wheels and Lincoln Logs opening up fascinating options for cross-constructions and expanded projects. Whether kids are buliding towers three feet tall or six-inch long sleds, the inventive possibilities with Qubits are immeasurable!

HOO’s HUNGRY FROSTED

Lemonade

This frozen lemonade recipe makes the perfect, refreshing summertime treat. Tangy and sweet, the flavor will make you feel like you are drinking a slice of your favorite lemon meringue pie.

DIRECTIONS In a blender, combine the lemonade concentrate, milk and enough ice to reach a creamy, thick frozen consistency. Add sweetened condensed milk, to taste, and blend until incorporated. Use less for a tart drink and add more for a sweeter drink. Pour into a frosted glass and garnish with whipped cream and grated lemon zest. The best news is there is no waste. Simply freeze any leftovers, to eat later as a yummy sorbet!

Ingredients • 1 cup of milk • 1/2 can (7 oz.) of sweetened condensed milk • 1 can frozen lemonade concentrate • 2-3 cups of crushed ice • grated lemon zest • whipped cream

Wise Choices for You & Your Family

for Children and Teens By Gerry P. Smith

Great Books in the Forecast

A child’s perception of weather is full of wonder. Unafraid of rain on their skin, delighting in kite weather and simply mad with excitement as the first snow of winter approaches, kids see the potential for adventure in nature’s changing moods. The following titles celebrate special weather conditions through the eyes of children who anticipate fun in the forecast!

Tap Tap Boom Boom

By Elizabeth Bluemle, Illustrated by G. Brian Karas (Candlewick Press)

The city sidewalks are crowded with pedestrians as the first droplets of rain start to fall. The tapping tempo of the rain punctuated by the booming thunder provides the constant score behind the bustling of people rushing to escape the weather. With sparse text that reads a bit like beat poetry, the hypnotic sounds and rhythms of a thunderstorm drive the narrative of controlled chaos among strangers who are now merging together with a common goal of escaping the deluge. Refreshing in its approach, Tap Tap Boom Boom explores weather through the actions and reactions of the people caught in its wake

When the Wind Blows By Linda Booth Sweeney and Jana Christy (G.P. Putnam’s Sons / Penguin)

When the wind picks up outside his door, a young boy beckons his grandma to accompany him on a journey that will make the most of every breeze! From kites flown above the hillside to a gusty walk along the seashore, they experience together all the ways that wind touches every part of their world. The sparse wording is just enough to whisper the sense of wind to the reader. Touching on the full sensory experience associated with being buffeted by breezes, this title is the soothing narration of a rich journey through a windy afternoon.

Snow By Sam Usher (Templar Books / Candlewick)

If you need a slow-moving adult to facilitate your snow day experience, time can seem to be literally frozen. When one young boy must wait on his Grandpa to accompany him out into the new snow, he pleads for speed as he monitors the snow through the windows. As time slowly passes, he’s becoming worried that he will be the last in his neighborhood to step into the winter wonderland. It’s only when his Grandpa finally gets ready to venture out, that the snowy adventure in store for them both makes the waiting worthwhile!
