First Ever Non-GMO Month

C

learwater – October 1, 2010 – Nature's Food Patch is proud to announce its participation in the first ever national Non-GMO Month, launching October 2010. The goal of Non-GMO Month is to empower retailers across the country to raise awareness about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the Non-GMO Project, and to support long-term availability of non-GMO food and ingredients. A highlight of the month, Non-GMO Day, or 10.10.10, is an event that encourages independent retailers, co-ops and other natural food grocers to participate in educational and fundraising activities geared toward raising consumer awareness while simultaneously raising funds for the Project, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.

Since the incorporation of the Non-GMO Project, thousands of products have been enrolled into its third party testing program, the Product Verification Program (PVP), and hundreds have already become verified and include the Non-GMO Project Verification Please also join Samm Simpson, a Patch Team Member for her seminar titled: A History of GMO's: from Greg Mendel's pea experiments through U.S. corn hybridization to Monsanto's ownership to DNA itself, politics & policies have allowed genetically modified (GM) food & the subsequent effects on our health & our food supply. This FREE lecture will take place in our brand new café on 10.10.10 at 2pm. To learn more about Nature's Food Patch and our involvement in Non-GMO Month, visit www. naturesfoodpatch.com. For more information about Non-GMO Month visit: www.nongmoproject.org l

Retailers from across the country have signed up to participate in Non-GMO Month and 10.10.10, and retailers have had an important role in the NonGMO Project since its inception. In fact, it was retailers that first conceived of the Non-GMO Project, in response to the concerns from shoppers about how to avoid GMO foods. Prior to the Non-GMO Project, North America had no third party verifica-

Medical specialists from around the world will present lectures about a free, special way of healing that is available for everyone. These specialists are members of the Medical Scientific Group (MWF), a part of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends. They document and verify these healings and voluntarily present this information through worldwide lectures. A compilation of more than 200 healing reports can be found on the web site: www.bruno-groening.org/english under the link Healings. During these lectures physicians will speak about people who have experienced healing from severe, chronic, and even so called “incurable” diseases. Medical documents will be presented and the experts will explain about a superior healing power that has been widely forgotten in modern medicine. The teachings of Bruno Groening (1906-1959), who became well known in the fifties due to extraordinary healings, are the basis for these lectures. Bruno Groening said time and again: “There is no incurable – God is the greatest physician”. Bruno spoke about a higher power that he called the healing stream. This power is abundantly available for everyone. The knowledge of how to benefit from this power is given freely to individuals through the worldwide, non-profit, volunteer based organization of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends. l

Circus Arts Training for

S

ince the advent of Cirque du Soleil, their magnificent spectacles of athleticism and artistry have created a huge surge in interest in circus arts training. Their re-invention of the circus has tantalized theatergoers across the world, along with leading the entire entertainment industry into a new realm. If you’ve ever been to a Cirque show, did you not walk out of the theater totally enamored with at least one performer? They made it all look so easy, so simple, so natural. And they were gorgeous specimens of human physique. You were inspired and thought about that show for weeks after. You might have been emboldened over the thought of how you, too, could be that physically fit and accomplish those daring skills of flying, swooping, spinning, bouncing and climbing. Circus Arts training has traditionally been kept to small elite circles of performers, handing traditions down through family members and close associates. There are also major circus schools, run with very strict guidelines, that offer intensive training covering the complete array of circus skills. A student can become familiar with every aspect and then see which area they excel in. Most of these schools consist of a 4-year training program resulting in a comprehensive ability in many areas that could include acrobatics, juggling, various aerial acts, hand balancing, to name a few. It is also a requirement of the Cuban and Russian Circus Schools that everyone train classical ballet, and the Cuban school also requires training in Salsa dance!

Benefits of circus aerial training for recreational fitness purposes here in the United States.

Benefits of Aerial Arts Training Ever see a fat aerialist? How about a dowdy hand-balancing guy? No way. Circus Arts training builds strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, stamina, focus and core strength. Beginning aerialists are delighted to find that they can weave all of their previous training in yoga, pilates, dance, gymnastics, etc. into their aerial training. Many adults have experienced the gym scene, lifting weights, doing their treadmill time, changing it up with pilates, etc. These things create a physique that is healthy and strong, but where’s the “wow” factor to the workout? Students of aerial training learn to pull up their weight, invert themselves completely with abdominal and upper body strength, and continue doing this over and over again while creating a 5-6 minute routine requiring exceptional stamina. Much of the training is done by simply being on the equipment and working skills over and over. This range of motion is unique and gets strengthened by repetition on the aerial equipment. It develops long, lean muscle. Classes also work flexibility (which is so important but very underrated in most physical fitness programs) and core conditioning.

Finding fun in your workout makes it work for you. It becomes a lifestyle. For some adults, aerial training is a life changing experience. There is no “routine”. Everyday of training brings fresh challenges. As you master skills, it brings you to the next level. Aerial students arrive excited to embark on their next class, and leave invigorated, and satisfied (and sweaty and exhausted!).

Mixing Athleticism with Art After a student masters several skills, it’s time to create an “act”. How do you put them all together to resemble anything comparable to those elegant Cirque performers? This is where the artistry comes in. Not only is there strength and skill involved, the student needs to make it pleasing and engaging to watch. Enter the artistic aspect of aerial training. While the student is getting their workout, they are having fun, using their creativity and integrating power and grace. It is no longer a workout, but a creative process with the benefits of physical fitness. This is the same process that dancers work. The by-product of the “workout” is a beautiful lean fit body.

Benefits for Kids Many kids today are overweight and physically unfit. Their attention is all over the place. They are bombarded with multi-media technology and can’t seem to walk without texting. They can’t even sit comfortably still without a game in their hands. On aerial equipment, they need to engage their minds to control their bodies safely. Aerial training is a very beneficial way to get them back into communication with their surroundings. It also builds strength and coordination and it’s fun!

Circus Schools Today Today local circus arts schools are popping up all over the country. They are still few and far between, but students can now learn circus skills on a local and recreational basis, without the intense training regime of the elite professional level. The

San Francisco Circus Center was the first and is still the most prestigious school in the country to date. There are other schools in Phila, Brattleboro, VT, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Athens, Ga., Miami, Portland, Seattle, Denver & Boulder to name a few. We also

have one here right in the Tampa Bay area, based in Clearwater. - Beth Brier is the Director of Dance & Circus Arts of Tampa Bay www.danceandcircusarts.com

For Those of You who are History Buffs:

The First Trapeze It all began on a balmy day in the summer of 1859 when a young Frenchman named Jules Leotard grew bored in his father’s gymnasium. He decided to connect a bar to some cords above the swimming pool and in doing so, created the first “flying trapeze”. To costume his new act, he created a tight fitting garment, which was designed to be flexible, allow unrestricted movement, and show off his physique. Leotard became the toast of Parisian culture. This quickly popularized his outfit, and it soon made it’s way into Parisian ballet studios, hence, the leotard was born. He was also the inspiration for the 1867 song “The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze”.

The Body

Breast Cancer Prevention What Causes Breast Cancer?

B

reast cancer is diagnosed most frequently in North American women. Research states that the risk factors that increase chances of developing breast cancer are said to be: family history, your menstrual and reproductive history, previous breast biopsies, lifestyle, and diet. Reference is made to African and Asian women as having the lowest breast cancer cases. However, what are missing are the emotional, mental and psychological contributions of this disease along with what we put into, and onto, our bodies. So how is Breast Cancer caused and what are the mind, body and spirit ramifications of this disease? Let’s look at anti-perspirant deodorants. The word is an oxy moron. The anti-perspirants that “Never let you sweat” are only preventing you from a natural detoxification process, but it may be one of the contributing sources of breast cancer. Anti-perspirant prevents you from perspiring, thereby inhibiting the body from purging toxins from below the armpits. These toxins do not magically disappear. Instead, the body deposits them in the lymph nodes below the arms since it cannot sweat them out. Let’s talk about the bras that we are wearing. According to David Williams, MD- "Wearing a bra at least 14 hours a day tends to increase the hormone prolactin, which decreases circulation in the breast tissue. Decreasing circulation can impede your body's natural removal of carcinogenic fluids that become trapped in the breast's sac-like glands (lymph nodes). These glands make up the largest mass of lymph nodes in the upper part of your body's lymphatic system." Try tapping and gently massaging the area from the armpit and then stroke downwards and then curve in around the bottom of breasts. If there is any tenderness then you need to be doing this every day. Also massage underneath the breast at the bra line. Notice any lumpiness here which is a good indication that the bra is adversely affecting you. Ditch the bra whenever you can. Consider sports bras that aren’t too tight. Currently our environment is full of toxins. Some of these toxins come from plastics are called xenoestrogens. These xenoestrogens mimic estrogens in the body. As a result, most women have too much estrogen and not enough progesterone in their body. This can be identified by strong PMS and menopausal symptoms. Estrogens do not initiate cancer but some of them, especially estradiol, promote it.

18 october 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

www.tampabaywellness.com

Phytoestrogens: Foods for the Breasts Another way to moderate your risk from exposure to estradiol is to consume phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant hormones found in foods and herbs such as lentils, dried beans, tofu, fermented soy products, burdock roots, parsnips, leafy greens, pomegranates, whole grains, edible seeds, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, red clover, hops, ginseng and wild yam. These foods may stop the breast cells from absorbing estradiol. Estrogens are metabolized by one of two pathways: the short safer path or the longer cancer-promoting path. Phytoestrogens and other non-cancer promoting estrogens take the quicker shorter path. Estradiol, HRT and xenoestrogens must take the slower long path. When there are plenty of short path estrogens in the blood (phytoestrogens), carcinogenic estrogens arrive at the breast cells only to find themselves blocked from entry. Another way to decrease your risk of breast cancer is to ingest good fats. Greek women who ate olive oil more than once a day lowered their risk of breast cancer by 25 percent. Use organic fats like local raw butter and goats milk cheese. Women on low-fat diets are found to have arthritis, PMS, hot flashes and infertility issues.

Nurturing Ourselves Breasts are the physical metaphor for giving and receiving. Women give and give until the well runs dry. Women must learn to nurture themselves before others. Breast cancer can be related to our need to be self-nurtured. Few women examine their breasts monthly. In order to encourage self-love and a healthy heart, get to know your breasts. Understand their unique anatomy. Women need to learn that their breasts are a normal part of the body and that they deserve loving attention. They need gentle massage which helps prevent cancer as well as detect it. Breast massage helps keep breast skin supple and adds resiliency to breast tissue. By getting to know your breasts you understand their dips, curves and lumpiness. Then you can take action when you feel something is out of place. YOU are your best early warning system for cancer.

Breast Self-Exams A good time to start regular breast self-exams would be after your menstrual cycle. Learn how your breast tissue feels. Lie on your back with one hand behind your head. This will make it easier for you to access all parts of the breast. Breast tissue extends up www.tampabaywellness.com

into the armpit (axilla), in what is called the tail of Spence. Lymph nodes that drain the breast tissue are also located in the armpits. Make a ritual out of your monthly breast exam.

tract calcium. Calcifications that are large, few in number, widely dispersed and round imply benign causes. Calcifications that are small, numerous, clustered asymmetrically shaped, and found in only one breast imply cancer.

Try using nourishing herbal oils just for your breasts. Evening primrose oil capsules can be ingested (high in EFA’s) and work well to relieve painful breasts. Other herbs/allies to consider for oils would be: Burdock seed, Calendula blossom, Castor oil, Comfrey root, Dandelion root, Plantain leaf, Poke root, St John’s Wort, Yarrow and Yellow Dock and Red Clover blossoms. Massage in little circles with light pressure. Trace a spiral starting at your armpit around and around your breast, until you reach your nipple. Notice any stuck emotions that may arise during this experience and let them go.

Cancerous mass – Malignant, irregular in shape, texture quite firm (like a grain of uncooked rice or a bit of wire). Lumps rarely cause pain, but they can. Fixed, they move only with the underlying tissue. May grow quickly or slowly but rarely shrinks on it’s own. Most common is postmenopausal women.

Defining Lumps in Breast Tissue First off, most lumps are harmless. Don’t get caught up in your own fears. Sit and focus on your body for a few days before you make a rash decision to undergo a series of tests and feed into the fears of others. Your body is communicating to you, stop and listen a moment. If the lump increases or doesn’t dissipate, consider seeing a doctor. Be centered without fear during this phase. Is it moving freely or is it fixed? Put your finger on your eyelid and move it around on your eyeball. It moves freely right? Now put your finger on the tip of your nose and try to move the skin. It is fixed. If lumps move freely, they are almost always benign (not cancer).

Types of Tumors: Fibroadenoma – Benign, round in shape, rubbery, firm texture, rarely painful, moves freely. More common in pre-menopausal women. Cyst – Benign, round in shape, squishy to quite firm in texture, often painful, moves freely, can change size very quickly with changes in your menstrual cycle, diet or emotions. Common in premenopausal women, uncommon after menopause unless on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Cysts do not increase breast cancer risk. Some studies show that women with lumpy, fibrocystic breasts are slightly less likely than average to have breast cancer during their reproductive years. Lipoma (fat necrosis) – Benign, irregularly shaped, soft or firm textured. Usually painless and fixed. Initiated by an injury to the breast. Calcifications – Benign, but may be precursor to cancer. Tiny deposits of calcium some micro and only visible in x-rays. Abnormal, dead cells, including scar tissue and dead cancer cells, at-

Mammogram Risks Perhaps no aspect of breast cancer is more widely publicized than screening mammography. However, screening mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer. A mammogram is an x-ray and x-rays have been shown to cause cancer. A mammogram uses radioactive rays to “see” breast tissues. X-rays are known to cause DNA damage in breast cells. You may also want to avoid Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI). This is even worse than a mammogram. A “tiny” amount of RADIATION is given intravenously. It is usually used in conjunction with a mammogram compounding the patient’s radiation exposure. You should consider Thermography, which also recognizes and detects the increased blood supply of cancer cells as well as the rapid energy production by the heat that they release. No radiation is involved. No invasion into the body is necessary. It is 100% safe. No amount of radiation can be considered safe. “Tiny” amounts or low dose radiation exposure has been demonstrated to cause unrepairable double strand breaks of DNA in breast tissue. Make no mistake, breast cancer and its surrounding tests and treatments is a huge money making industry. Look for a doctor that practices Thermography for breast cancer detection. Having an anti-cancer lifestyle will decrease your risk of breast cancer in a way that regular mammograms won’t. Practice breast massage, phytoestrogenic foods, healthy exercise and nurture your emotional needs. Love your breasts. Their energy gives out so much, yet we forget to receive. l Rev. ging strikes fear into the hearts of many people. It often conjures up images of an old person ridden with decrepitude and disease. However, aging is not inherently a disease process confined to old age with a precipitous or slow tortuous decline into frailty, senility and mortality. This is not to say that aging is a damage-free process divorced from death. In fact, aging is the accumulation of damage to the building blocks of life (e.g., DNA, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) and the cells, tissues and organs of the body. It is a process beginning at birth and extending over the life span, resulting in the body being unable to repair itself from age-related damage (see Moody, 2010; Olshansky, Hayflick & Carnes, 2002). However, contrary to the view that aging is inextricably linked to predetermined, disease-ridden senescence, it is possible to age successfully.

Successful Aging To age successfully means to lower the risk of disease and disease-related disability, maintain high cognitive and physical functioning and remain actively engaged in life (Rowe & Kahn, 1997). Further, aging successfully entails minimizing the number of years spent suffering, while maximizing the total number of years lived with quality of life (i.e., compressing morbidity). Not a few people doubt that it is possible to age successfully in the way just described. Nevertheless, there is scientific support to show that while it is inevitable, aging is alterable and that while it is limiting, aging is not necessarily debilitating. Hence, successful aging is an achievable health goal.

Free-Radicals & Aging One important way to age successfully is to limit the oxidative damage done to cells by free-radicals. Following Denham Harman’s theory of aging, free-

The Role of Aged Garlic Extract In Successful Aging By Michael G. Garko, Ph.D. Host of Let’s Talk Nutrition radicals are molecules which have lost an electron, making them highly unstable and creating molecular mayhem within the body damaging/oxidizing cells, nucleic acids (i.e., RNA &DNA), proteins and lipids. Over time the oxidative damage accumulates and eventually renders the body incapable of repairing itself and, thereby, accelerating the aging process and making the body susceptible to disease processes. Normal metabolic processes (i.e., transforming of nutrients into energy) can create free radicals. Lifestyle, nutritional and environmental factors can also create free radicals. For example, tobacco smoke, alcohol, X-rays, sun exposure, toxic and poisonous chemicals

in the air, water and soil, processed foods containing food additives and nutrients (e.g., trans fats), food preparation (e.g., barbequing), exercise and stress can create free radicals.

Aged Garlic Extract Antioxidants, sometimes called free radical scavengers, are molecules capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules by donating one of their electrons. As it turns out, Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) is constituted of a dense concentration of an-

www.tampabaywellness.com

tioxidants, giving it the ability to modulate oxidative stress and helping people to age successfully. Over 650 peer-reviewed, scientific studies on specific AGE products have established its antioxidant properties and potential to protect the various systems of the body, all of which contributes to aging successfully. Antioxidant-rich AGE has been shown scientifically to have:

• Cardioprotective benefits • Liver-protective/detoxification benefits • Immune enhancement and anti-infection benefits • Antioxidant and radioprotective benefits • Anti-stress and anti-fatigue benefits • Brain/cognitive and neurotrophic effects and anti-depressive benefits

AGE is a garlic supplement created using extraction and a proprietary process of aging. No chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides are used in the farming of the garlic. The garlic is harvested, cleaned, sliced and then stored in stainless steel tanks for up to 20 months. The aging process eliminates the pungent odor of the garlic and gives AGE its health–promoting benefits, without the unpleasant side effects (i.e., offensive odor and potential indigestion) of fresh raw garlic.

Conclusion Aging is not inherently a disease-ridden process occurring during the later stages of life and promising only a decline into decrepitude and death. It is possible to age successfully. The antioxidant properties of AGE can assist in aging successfully by helping to prevent and modulate cellular oxidation and degeneration caused by free-radicals. It is not being claimed that AGE can single handedly stop the aging process. However, taking AGE daily is an effective nutritional tactic which can be combined with getting adequate rest and sleep, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and managing stress so as to age successfully. l References Moody (2010). Yoga Pose by Shelly Happel

F

or the beginner, we have an iconic pose that everyone knows & loves (or hates). While not officially a ‘beginner’ pose, downward facing dog (DFD) is frequently taught in beginner classes. Often, new students will be shocked by the teacher who says “Ok, now rest in down dog.” Their minds’ reel, “Really? A resting pose? Are you serious?” Well, yes… eventually…. after core strength is engaged, after the hamstrings are loosened up, after the shoulders have some openness and the wrists are supported by strong forearms and fingers, then it feels great to just breathe into the lengthening potential of DFD. It takes some time to get there; be patient with yourself and don’t look at other dogs while doing the pose. Most beginners sabotage themselves by making comparisons with experienced people around them. The only way to get there is step by step, one doggy paw at a time. Here are several techniques that can make DFD enjoyable for a beginner. One of the loveable qualities of dogs is that they don’t take themselves seriously… remind yourself of this and you’ll have fun with your dog.

1)

Most people are concerned with getting their heels to the floor in DFD, but they lose length in their spine. DFD is not about getting your heels to the floor. You can keep your heels lifted and your knees bent and this will relieve tension in the hamstrings (and if you really want your heels down, try turning your feet out, taking strain off the tight tendons along the backs of the legs).

2)

You can listen to Let’s Talk Nutrition with Dr. Michael Garko Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on AM 1250 WHNZ or online at www.LetsTalkNutrition.com

www.tampabaywellness.com

Downward Facing Dog

For tight shoulders, keeps your hands wider apart on your mat, elbows strong, fingers spread, rotating your thumbs more forward. If your wrists hurt in the pose, press the fingers into the floor to engage your forearms. Be sure you are on a firm surface, not carpet or a spongy mat. A squishy surface will drop the bones of the wrists lower than the palm, causing painful nerve impingement.

3)

Start with the feet wide and move to narrow. You gain more strength through the deep hip flexors (psoas) by widening your legs apart and bending your knees. Then, straighten your legs by using your butt & pelvic floor to lengthen the spine and backs of the legs. Once you feel lower abs move inward, the thighs strong, the feet alive & activated, tiptoe your legs closer together. This will give you strength in the lower body, taking weight off the shoulders, arms, wrists and hands. The lower body becomes more weight bearing than the upper body.

4)

Finally, reach the crown of your head forward towards the space between your hands, feeling length between every vertebrae, but most especially at the base of the skull and in the lower back, allowing the sitting bones to lift towards the sky. The pose will look like an upside down V when viewed from the side. As you gain core strength, the distance between your hands and feet increases, but start off short and move longer for maximum doggy joy. Lastly, remember to breathe. Goodbye By Janice Van Dyck

W

hen I was five years old, I said my first real goodbye. On a cold January night in my pajamas, I watched our house burn after the basement exploded from a natural gas leak. We never went home again. There were more goodbyes in the form of relationship combustions and best-friend betrayals. A not-so-unusual divorce. Then came farewells to my first career, my gall bladder, most of my possessions with the sale of a house, and most recently, my mother. That was a goodbye that, literally, almost killed me. When I’m asked to autograph one of my novels, I often write, “Life has many chapters.” Of all the things I’ve learned in life, I know that change is the strongest truth. My mother used to put it differently. She’d say, “Nothing stays the same for very long.” What she implied was, “And you’d better get good at saying goodbye.” It is said that an organism at a steady state is never closer to death. We need to grow or die. We all develop coping mechanisms for managing the inevitable change that is part of being human. But in order to make use of the curve balls thrown from the free enterprise system, the human dynamics of relationships, and the inevitability of our own demise, it’s best if we can do more than just cope. We can only grow when we come to terms with the healing power of goodbye. Goodbye comes in many forms, and I tend to think about them by how hard they are to say. The Good-Riddance Goodbye is the

22 october 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

easiest. This is the goodbye we say when we break up a bad relationship or quit a bad job. It’s full of righteous indignation and moral superiority. It’s fueled by the power of choice. It’s one of the only times we are happy to slam the door shut and put a lock on. The Temporary Goodbye has temporary pain. We tell ourselves the parting is only a short pause, punctuated by passing guilt or deprivation. Goodbye is just a word to bridge the time that will pass before we say hello again, like when we send the kids to camp or visit loved ones. The “I Think This Is For The Best” Goodbye requires sacrifice. It’s when, despite our mind and body’s requirement for homeostasis and predictability, we voluntarily commit to a change that will leave us or loved ones in a better place. It might be goodbye to a bad habit, or it might have consequences for others, like leaving the kids with the other parent after divorce, or committing to end a codependent relationship. It requires courage, determination and often perseverance for this goodbye to be successful, but in closing one door, we simultaneously open another. Goodbye seeds hope. The other types of farewell are harder, because we have no control over them. Do these two sound familiar? The “What Did I Ever Do To You?” Goodbye (or “Why Are We Saying Goodbye?” Goodbye) is hard because it reinforces our sense of weakness and ineffectiveness in the world. If we lose our job or have another person sever a www.tampabaywellness.com

relationship with us, who can we blame but ourselves? We can try to turn it into a Good-Riddance Goodbye, but let’s face it – this type of goodbye hurts deeply. If we’re prone to depression, this goodbye is dangerous, because it feeds that inner voice of hopelessness and the feeling that we’re not quite good enough. The Final Goodbye comes when we or a loved one is either preparing to or has already died. It stirs up all kinds of feelings, from relief to guilt, from sadness to anger and back again. Every emotion is fair game. While social scientists like Elizabeth Kübler-Ross (On Death and Dying, 1969) have studied grieving as it relates to death, I believe the same principles apply whenever we have to say goodbye. Kübler-Ross’ research shows that grief has stages which most people pass through, although not in any given order or over any specific time frame. She identified denial, anger, bargaining, depression and, finally, acceptance as the primary emotions involved with healing after a loss. When I worked as an organizational change consultant, I worked with many business teams, teaching these principles after layoffs, reorganizations and personal defeats. I’ve referred to it when undergoing my own life changes, and when helping friends through theirs. Sometimes it helps just knowing that what we’re thinking and feeling is normal. Uncertainty breeds anxiety, and it can be relieved by knowing that the deep emotions and turmoil that personal change evokes are just a stop on the way to acceptance and growth. The mind-body connection. While my mother was dying, I ate fast food every day, melted into a plastic hospital chair for weeks, and lost sleep at a noisy hotel, and – guess what? – I got sick. I never got to say goodbye to her, because I was in a different hospital being treated for a life-threatening condition. The doctors never found a physical cause for my illness, so I believe it was the stress that manifested it. If I’d taken as good care of myself as I had of my mother, our ending might have been easier, if not happier.

www.tampabaywellness.com

When I wrote my book, Finding Frances, I was able to create characters embodying the different emotions associated with grief. In doing so, I worked through some of my own issues. When people read the story, they say they are better able to articulate their own experience of loss. It is enormously satisfying to be part of that process. Similarly, you can help yourself and others do this, as most people find it helpful to be able to talk with a friend, support group, or even to themselves in a journal as a way of seeking closure. This relieves the mind of its burden. If you’re undergoing a transition after a major change – and are in the middle of a hard goodbye – don’t forget to care for your physical body by eating right, exercising regularly, and sleeping well. Allow yourself to develop healing rituals that comfort, whether those rituals involve a warm bath, a religious gathering, or whatever feels right. Learn to say “no” when you can’t give any more. Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” So many of us have heard these words, but to make them tangible, think about the way we prune plants, just the right amount, to renew their life force. When we repot a plant, we break the pot-bound roots a bit and spread them in fresh soil. Some of the roots have been severed – but they are now more ready than ever for sun, nutrients, rain. All of the elements that will help new leaves and flowers flourish. Saying goodbye can be hard, even devastating. But with every transition, we have the opportunity to grow. We become more of who we are, and more fully experience the full range of emotions that come with being alive. l During her own mother’s passing, Janice recorded — at her mother’s request — wisdom gained through the goodbye process and practical advice for those going through this experience. After acting as health care surrogate for her mother, Van Dyck wrote her latest novel, Finding Frances, based on her experience. She is also the author of The O'Malley Trilogy, and is a freelance writer in the Tampa Bay area. For more information, visit janicevandyck.com.

Celebrity Tips to Add To Your

Repertoire

Karissa & Kristina

BEAUTY: • Wash your face every morning and before going to bed at night • Apply Crest white strips to your teeth— they really do work well! • Always apply a moisturizing lotion after showering Karissa Shannon, the fresh-faced, blonde bombshell aims to conquer the film, television, fitness and fashion worlds. Bringing along her actor boyfriend, “Blue Mountain State’s” Sam Jones III, the former star of the E! hit reality TV series GIRLS NEXT DOOR is ready for her close-up. This December Karissa is making her feature film debut in Sofia Coppola’s ode to Hollywood’s storied Chateau Marmont in the drama SOMEWHERE with heartthrob Stephen Dorff and the talented Elle Fanning. Check out Karissa as she holds down serious screen-time in the brand new trailer for SOMEWHERE: www.youtube. com/watch?v=C9n9hP_LtL8. In addition to her numerous projects, Karissa maintains her killer physique by playing sports, hiking, swimming, running and chasing her puppy, Prince Jones, up and down the beaches in Malibu.

• Hydrate your hair with Moroccan oil after the shower • Use a clear deodorant (my favorite is Clear & Dry)

HEALTH: • Take a multivitamin daily • Eat lots of fruits and veggies • ALWAYS apply sun block! • Drink lots of water!

FITNESS: • Take the stairs instead of using the elevator if you have the option—always try to burn those calories!

• I do 50 squats before bed every night to tighten up my upper thighs (and squats are great for your butt too)—this exercise is fast and easy!

Important additional tips: Staying in shape year-round is a lot of work but it’s so worth it. My days can be extremely long and draining, I am constantly busy but I always make sure to have time to work out in the morning—even if it’s 20-minutes of cardio on the treadmill. If I have a particularly crazy day I will try and wake-up a bit earlier just so I don’t blow off my work-outs and claim that I will do it later (because more often than not I won’t end up working out at all, then the guilt sets in)! I also want to stress how important it is to wash your face every morning and night—especially when I am going into hair and make-up all the time it builds up on my face and if I don’t wash it off I am just begging for a break-out. The ultimate sacrifice though is making sure I follow my diet. Even when I am running around from place-to-place I bring a Luna bar to snack on so I don’t get too run down. I maintain a healthy diet of fish, veggies, chicken and my absolute favorite snack are raw almonds! It’s so important to eat a lot of protein and NEVER starve yourself because you need the energy to keep a positive attitude and stay happy, especially when you are constantly busy. l www.tampabaywellness.com
