Breast Cancer Awareness:

A

ccording to the American Cancer Society, approximately 2.6 million women in the U.S. have survived breast cancer. How much does lifestyle factor into these statistics? The American Cancer Society also reports that in 2011, approximately 39,520 women were expected to die from breast cancer. Were these women all genetically doomed to their deaths? What about men? In 2011, about 2,140 cases of breast cancer were projected to occur among men, says the American Cancer Society. Given these looming statistics, is it safe to say that lifestyle can leverage the odds? And what exactly does “lifestyle” mean? Professor Robin Bell, Deputy Director of the Women’s Health Program at Monash University’s Alfred Hospital, says that maintaining

a healthy weight can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Is that enough to beat the odds, or can we do more? And how much is too much? Does going for a routine mammogram increase or reduce our risk? Can wearing a bra cause breast cancer? How about what’s lurking under our sinks, on our counters, or in our medicine cabinets? Can something as simple as putting on deodorant or antiperspirant in the morning lead to breast cancer, too? Misconceptions surround breast cancer as much as—if not more—than other diseases. Sorting out fact from fiction thus becomes the first step on the road to living a lifestyle aimed toward thwarting breast cancer. While it’s impossible to sort through all of the myths surrounding this disease, pinpointing facts about prevention and treatment is a sure-fire way to get started.

Natural Approaches to Prevention Self-Exams Incorporating self-exams into your lifestyle may be one of the most important things you can do to prevent breast cancer. Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important, reports Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Even more, self-exams are free and completely natural. According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of breast cancer to look for include: • A breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue • Bloody discharge from the nipple • Change in the size or shape of a breast • Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling • Inverted nipple • Peeling, scaling or flaking of the nipple or breast skin • Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange The National Breast Cancer Foundation recommends that women of all ages perform breast self-exams at least once a month. The exam should be performed in the shower, in front of the mirror, and lying down, according to these recommendations: • In the shower: Use the pads of your fingers to move around your entire breast in a circular pattern. Move from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area for any lumps, thickening, or hardened knots. • In front of a mirror: Put your arms at your sides. Visually inspect your breasts, looking for any changes in the contour, any swelling, dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Raise your arms high overhead and perform the same inspection. Next, place your hands on your hips and press firmly. Flex your chest muscles and look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side. • Lying Down: When lying down, place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Use your left hand to gently move the pads of your fingers around your right breast. Use small circular motions, and cover the entire breast area and armpit area. www.tampabaywellness.com

The Mayo Clinic advises to see a doctor whenever you find a lump or other change in your breast—even if a recent mammogram was normal. Weight Management Weight management is also critical to integrate into your lifestyle. According to “The Pink Ribbon Diet,” being overweight can increase your odds of getting breast cancer. “I’d like women to concentrate on things they can do to reduce the risk, like maintaining a healthy weight,” remarks Professor Robin Bell, Deputy Director of the Women’s Health Program at Monash University’s Alfred Hospital, in “Busting Breast Cancer Myths.” Bell and researchers in Melbourne asked a group of breast cancer survivors if they thought anything might have contributed to their developing breast cancer. The results suggest that lifestyle factors such as weight and stress can increase the risk of breast cancer. Nutrition In “The Pink Ribbon Diet,” Mary Flynn, RD describes a nutrition program that she enrolled twenty-eight women in to help them reduce their weight and improve biomarkers for breast www.tampabaywellness.com

cancer. The participants began with either the National Cancer Institute (NCI) diet or her diet, followed the diet for eight weeks, and then switched diets. The results? Flynn’s PBOO (plant-based olive oil) diet was more effective for improving biomarkers for breast cancer and for losing weight. Flynn’s diet allowed four to five servings per day of healthy fats, three of which had to be extra virgin olive oil. During the study, participants were allowed a total of 12 ounces of poultry or seafood per week, and they were also allowed to choose a given number of servings of both fruits and vegetables each day. In addition to losing weight and improving biomarkers for breast cancer, Flynn’s participants reported a return in energy. Alcohol Moderation Based on multiple studies, the American Cancer Society states that consuming alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. The NIC confirms this: “drinking alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. The level of risk rises as the amount of alcohol consumed rises.” In an article

published in September of 2013, The New York Times states that young women who regularly drink alcohol before their first pregnancy may increase their risk of contracting breast cancer. The article briefly evaluates a study, published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, which analyzed 150,000 women with no history of cancer and found that alcohol use before pregnancy was associated with an increased risk for “proliferative benign breast disease, or B.B.D., noncancerous breast abnormalities that also raise the risk for cancer.” “Limiting alcohol can pay off through reduced breast cancer risk,” said Dr. Graham A. Colditz, a co-author of the study. Water is always a healthy alternative. For those who wish to quit drinking, 12-step programs may provide helpful support. Complementary Therapies Prayer Although there isn’t a natural cure for breast cancer, there are many complementary therapies that, when used adjunctively, can greatly assist in a woman’s efforts to heal. Breast Cancer Awareness Month General Hospital and co-author of an article published in Cancer points out: a study found that 71 percent of the women who died from breast cancer were “women who were not participating in screening clearly,” which clearly “supports the importance of early detection.” The United States Preventative Task Force has set the biennial recommendation for women who are between 50 and 74 years of age. “The decision to start regular, biennial screening mammography before the age of 50 years should be an individual one and take patient context into account,” they say. Skipping a routine mammogram can stop you from detecting breast cancer, which can increase your odds of dieing from it once you are diagnosed. Finally, there is not enough evidence to conclude that wearing bras or applying antiperspirant or deodorant causes breast cancer. The History of Halloween

All Hallow’s Eve also called Samhain, All Soul’s Day, All Saints Day or Halloween is the most magical night of the year. It is considered the Celtic New Year. It is a night of glowing jack-o-lanterns, bobbing for apples, tricks or treats, and dressing in costume. For some, it is a night of ghost stories and seances, tarot card readings and scrying with mirrors. Traditionally, it is a time of clairvoyance (seeing with your 2nd sight), when the veil that separates our world from the otherworld is at its thinnest. It is an excellent night to peek into the future. As in most ancient pagan holidays, the eve is more important than the day itself. Many ancient cultures celebrated this as a festival of the dead, including the preSpanish Mexicans and the Egyptians. Most of our modern American traditions can be traced to the British Isles. This holiday marks summers end. The scary face of the jack-o-lantern was useful for those who traveled the road in order to scare away spirits or faeries that might lead you astray. Set on porches and in windows, they cast the same spell of protection over the household. The custom of dressing in costume and trick-or-treating is of Celtic origin. Wearing costumes arose so mortals could impersonate the animal

spirits. The custom was not for only children, but was actively indulged in by adults as well. Caroling once practiced at all major holidays was also done from house to house. It is a time to have a feast for those loved ones that are dead. It was believed the dead could, if they wished, return to the land of the living for this one night, to celebrate with their family, tribe or clan. Honor your deceased ancestors by creating an altar or set your dining table with photos and memorabilia of them. Plan a family dinner with a place setting for your deceased ancestors. In Defense of

Squats

I

t seems appropriate to begin this article with a “thank you” - a thank you to the strength and conditioning coaches out there who go the extra mile and teach their clients how to squat, and perform deadlifts. I say thank you, because in gyms across the country these lifts, and their variations, are as rare as a $2 bill. Certainly not due to any danger in performing the lifts themselves, but due to the inability of the coaches to a. teach the lifts, and b. pick up on the postural/tissue tension faults that cause the lifts to break down.

Due in part to a. and b., many coaches simply resort to throwing their clients on leg press machines and watching them, well, sit and press away. One of my favorite quotes by Mark Rippetoe is “the only problem with barbell training is the fact that the vast, overwhelming majority of people don’t know how to do it correctly”. Truth be told. For just a moment I’ll side with the coaches who don’t teach these movements. Many clients, when interviewed about their training and injury history, quite adamantly state that these lifts hurt their back and knees. If I were a new, unexperienced coach, I’d not want to encourage 18 OCTOBER 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Deadlifts clients to perform movements that created pain. And if I were a client, I’d not want to be led to perform movements that hurt. However, that’s the end of my defensive role, because I’m not a new coach and because I’ve led dozens of clients through training programs that fix pain and injury. And, yes, you guessed it - these programs include heaps of squats, deadlifts, and their many variations.

Let’s take a look at these lifts! Go stand up over your toilet, sit down on it, and get back up again. You’ve just performed a squat (probably technically poor, but you’ve got the idea). Now, go into your living room, bend at your knees, picking something up off the floor “with good lifting posture”. You’ve probably just done something resembling a deadlift. Now, granted the numerous times daily you get off the toilet or pick stuff up off the floor, it’s amazing to me when clients report that their doctors or therapists tell them “just don’t squat if it hurts”. I then ask them to get additional advice on how to go to the bathroom, pick stuff up, get in and out of the car, stand up from a park bench and generally survive without the ability to squat. As you well know, life becomes rather difficult when you lose, or choose not to train these movements. To the left is a picture of a back squat, full depth. When performed correctly (the key word being correctly), the squat is a very useful exercise for developing strength and power of the hips and core. Along with the squat, the variations (lunging patterns, etc) are really useful in developing knee stability. When people complain of pain during this movement, know that it’s not the movement it’s the poor joint health, and excessive muscular tension that creates pain felt in the movement. Due to excessive amounts of time sitting, most people have lost range of motion in their ankles and hips, which doesn’t permit an easy descent

to the ground. People have extremely tight quad and hip flexor muscles, tight hamstrings, tight lateral glutes, and really weak/flat butts. All of this contributes to excessive strain on the knees and lower back, which is then felt when squats and deadlifts are attempted. The deadlift really builds back and hip strength, particularly in the lumbar spine. One must learn how to hold the back in a rigid position, allowing the power of the movement to come from the hips, shoulder blades, arms and hands. Below are pictures of the conventional deadlift, and the ‘sumo’ style deadlift. People who are challenged in the squat are usually challenged in the deadlift. However, the good news is if you fix ‘stuck joints and muscles’ in general, you will be able to perform both of these lifts - killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. Why you want to squat and deadlift. Even if just using your own bodyweight. Most people aren’t motivated by being able to get off the toilet at age 85, or being able to pick up bags of groceries. Most people want a tight, rocking, sexy ass bubble butt that looks hot in a pair of jeans. Ok, fine. Learn to do these lifts, and you’ll happily accomplish all the above. When I’m 85, I’ll let you know if my rear is still worth a nice pair of jeans. Your next step is likely to find a coach who knows what the heck they’re talking about. Get a good physical assessment done, learn how to open up your joints and muscles again, put time into injury prevention strategies, and practice, practice, practice! Seasonal Transitions Late summer, also known as “Indian Summer”, is the time at the end of the summer and before autumn that is a time of metamorphosis in nature and within ourselves. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this time is associated with the Earth element. During this transitional period it is important to stay centered or “grounded”. There are many ways to help you do this including meditation, exercise, deep breathing and a variety of other techniques. We tend to shift from a lighter summer diet to a diet with more density during this transition. This provides more fuel to give us strength and get more accomplished. Heading toward the autumn equinox our balance begins to shift inward. This is a time to begin a building and toning program. A building diet includes a greater proportion of protein-rich foods, a little more fat than spring and summer, and fuel from whole grains. A good diet will see you through seasonal transition. As nature begins to enter into its inward cycle, you may find your body beginning to contract also. You can retain balance by doing stretching exercises to keep your muscles and joints loose. Try doing morning forward bend and side-stretches and going for a walk daily. Daily exercise will also help regulate your weight during fall and winter when there is a tendency to gain weight. The organs relating to late summer and the Earth element are the stomach and spleen. These organs work to digest your foods and distribute energy throughout the body. To support the spleen and boost your immune system, consume fresh, organic romaine, parsley and/or celery juice. Parsley is high in potassium, iron, vitamins A & C, manganese, and copper. You can also receive the benefits of parsley by taking it as a tea. Parsley is also a great blood-cleansing herb that works to detoxify the body. The late summer is a time of transition in nature and a time of adjustments in our lives. It is the beginning of the shift from the outward expression of spring and summer to the inward focus of autumn and winter. Making seasonal changes to you regular routine – diet, exercise, and herbs – will help to make the transition easier on your body. CLEARING KARMA Welcoming Peaceful Relationships Karma can be explained by the natural universal laws of the Universe that apply to everyone. It is the law cause-and-effect. As the Bible says, “What ye sow, that also shall you reap.” We have all heard “what goes around, comes around.” That, essentially, is our karma. What we give out comes back! Life gives us karmic situations so we can make another decision, thus moving us in yet another direction. A constant barrage of choices, spur us on moment by moment to make decisions which shape our lives and our relationships. Karmic patterns keep revisiting us in many different ways with many different people. All for our growth and healing. Even though our reality appears to be one of desperation and confusion at times, old karmic patterns keep appearing for us to experience. We can decide to change directions, thereby creating a different result. Or we can ignore making a decision or we can decide to go in an entirely

new direction. Each choice leads us through our karma pathway. New and different decisions will manifest into new patterns, which will provide us with new experiences. No decision or a decision made with a negative emotion behind it will result in another karmic pattern of struggle. Learning to be consciously aware of each moment’s decisions, we can begin to clear out unhappy karmic patterns. Healthy and happy karmic relationships will be created. Positively based awareness creates life changing results. This flows into effecting new choices that create happy relationships, healthy bodies, and prosperous careers. By being aware of choices and old negative karmic patterns, we are able to leave behind old karmic patterns which no longer fit who we are. By looking at the picture the Universe gives us and begin searching for new choices, we are able to shift our entire life around towards one of joy and happiness.

L

ife can be tough. Sometimes we don’t feel like we have the tools to navigate this world in a way that will create the life we want. Oprah once said “The secret to life is that there is no secret.” I agree with her, except that for a long time some basic universal principle escaped me. The revelation that there are certain rules that I can use to become a greater architect of my life felt like someone slipping me the answers to a test. So I’d like to tell you the universal laws I have come to understand, you already know them on some level, but it’s time to bring them to fore front of your life. The universe functions in certain, predictable, yet mystical ways.

These universal laws conflict in no way with religion - quite the opposite. They are a vessel for which our higher source becomes undeniably visible in our lives. These principles allow us to wrangle the wild animal of free will and not be victims of a chaotic world, but wielders of it. People who understand these laws can live fulfilling and empowering lives. Those who don’t will continue to suffer in a never-ending fight with themselves and the world they believe they live in. Here are the three laws of the universe, each independent, while relying completely on each other.

Law #1: What you think regularly becomes your belief system about this world. As a child, you took in information at such an incredible rate. It was as if you were trying to drink the ocean. That information helped to form the way you see the world. You inevitably adopted some thought patterns from your parents and the people around you, and as a kid, you didn’t have much control over that information. Your mind is like a record player, and the thoughts you play the most are the ones you dig the deepest groove into over time. As your mind scans its needle across the possible options, it passes that deep groove and falls right in, playing the same old familiar song. What you repeat, you will believe. No matter how crazy it is. We have to create new grooves, new defaults. It doesn’t matter if you intellectually know it isn’t true - if you repeat it, you will believe it. mind? What emotion, story, complaint or idea are you allowing to have center stage day after day?

Law #2: What you believe becomes your reality. Every time. No exceptions. The human mind is exceptional, but it is also highly impressionable. People can be convinced of crazy things simply through repetition, like kamikaze pilots or cults. Although those are dramatic examples, the same principles are happening in your life everyday. What we think, we feel. What we feel, we believe. I added “no exceptions” to the law because many of us will be tempted to say that we constantly think certain things that we know aren’t true, so we have them under control. This is a lovely hope, but can never really be true. Our intellectual grasp of how crazy something is can be powerful, but at the end of the day if that understanding isn’t strong enough to stop the repetition then it is not under control. You may believe it more subconsciously, but that is an even more dangerous place to hold a belief. If you take one thing from this universal law let it be acceptance of the fact that what you repeat in your head is what you believe about life and your place in it. Those repetitive thoughts are the best mirror you have into exactly the kind of life you will experience. So remember, what you think repeatedly you will believe and what you believe will become your reality.

Law #3: You have the power to manifest ANY reality in your life. You do have control over how you choose to think, even though it doesn’t feel like it sometimes. If you don’t accept responsibility for that truth then the first two laws don’t matter. Your ability to utilize these laws lies completely in your willingness to take control of your internal landscape. If you want to use these laws to create the life you want you must first stop blaming people or experiences, and take charge of your own life. Once you’ve taken responsibility and begun to design your own thoughts, you will find that the universe is actively working toward bringing you anything

and everything you believe to be yours - that is the key. The universe is not conspiring to bring you what you desire; it is working to bring you what you already believe is yours. If you believe you lack something the universe will prove you right. There is no limit to how much abundance the universe is prepared to deliver to you. You are only limited by the thoughts you create, the tapes you play, and how big you are willing to see yourself. Everything from love to wealth to creativity is not a person, amount, or object we seek, but a sensation we desire. Know that it is yours and the sensation becomes available to you. As you live in that sensation the more it will recognize itself in you and seek you out. These laws teach us that reality is what we decide it is. That our quality of life is being crafted with every thought. We have been given tools to navigate our minds, hearts, and lives. But it is up to you to decide if you want to guide the ship, or row in the back. Your life wants to open up to you - it craves your participation. But the universe is a gentleman, it will hold the door, but you have to walk through. Namaste

5 Tips to Increase Motivation, Energy, and Follow-Through By Kristin Keough, PsyD, CAP Many people complain about reduced energy, lack of motivation, and increased procrastination. They don’t have the daily get up and go, or the energy to start or finish projects. Here are some quick tips to increase motivation and accomplish the things you want to do. These can be used to achieve life goals, improve study habits, practice a skill, and/or follow through on a major life decision. 1. Identify and write down your goal. People that write down their goals and the steps to achieve them are more likely to follow-through. Make your goals realistic, achievable, and specific. The reasons many people fail on their goals is they don’t have a plan (e.g. often New Year’s Resolutions). For example, the common goal/resolution of losing weight, first decide what steps you specifically need to take to make this happen. First write down how many pounds you want to lose (e.g. 10 pounds) and a specific time period (6 months). Then decide how you can reasonably lose the weight (e.g. stop drinking soda, exercise on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and eat salads for lunch). 2. Decide what accountability measures you want to use and pick specific time frames. A daily journal can act as an accountability measure by helping keep track of your progress and help you assess why or why not you are reaching your goals (i.e. you may notice you work out less during highly stressful weeks). Take action to hold yourself accountable such as weighing yourself once a week and writing down on a calendar how much weight you lost. Other accountability measures include using a daily planner, setting alarms or alerts on your phone, or keeping notes on your tablet. Tell others about your goals and invite them to ask you how you are doing in achieving them. You may also

want to Facebook your goals to keep others informed about your progress. Reading articles/journals/magazines about your goals (i.e. healthy eating magazine, Tampa Bay Wellness Magazine) will also help keep you motivated and remind you why you want to follow through. Additionally, you could elicit support from family, friends, or a Life Coach to help keep you determined. 3. Identify the things in your life that are keeping you from being successful. Do you spend too much time watching television, talking on the phone, or searching the internet? Are you afraid to succeed because you do not want to increase others’ expectations of you or you are fearful you might fail? It’s time to assess why you are not moving forward and decide if you are trying to reach this goal for yourself or for others? If you need additional support assessing your road blocks a therapist/ psychologist can help you work through your issues. 4. Think about and write down the benefits of accomplishing your goals and the costs of not following through. As human beings we are motivated by pain and pleasure. Connect with the pleasures of your goal (i.e. If I lose weight I’ll have more energy, feel more confident, and have less back pain). Connect with the pain of not following through with your goal (i.e. If I don’t lose weight, I’ll continue to have health problems, I’ll feel tired all of the time, and I’ll feel less desirable). 5. Have fun and find ways to make your goals enjoyable. Positively reinforcing yourself with rewards and positive statements will entice you to stay motivated. Motivators can include tangible things such as buying yourself an outfit one size smaller to fit into when you reach your goal weight or buying yourself a piece of workout equipment that you will have fun using. Make

the tangible reward specific to your particular goal. Compliment yourself for your progress and remember you are doing this for improvement not perfection. Sometimes you may lapse on your goal, but beating yourself up about it won’t make you feel better and you’re more likely to give yourself permission to give up. Learn from your mistakes and acknowledge each accomplishment- big and small. Use the Quick Guideline tool below to help you structure your goals.
