WHAT’S IN YOUR WATER? The answer might shock you! Especially if you’re drinking city water. The contaminants and chemicals found in tap water can actually work against your best efforts to stay healthy. In fact, up to 315 contaminants have been found in American tap water since 2004. One alternative many people turn to instead is bottled water. There is a misconception that bottled water is of higher quality than tap water. Most people are surprised to learn that many bottled waters are created using the process of reverse osmosis, which results in what is commonly referred to as “dead” water. Instead of purifying your body, drinking “dead” water can actually hinder your body’s ability to absorb important nutrients.

Winning Formulas that Add Up to

Permanent Change An Interview with Paula Owens: Holistic Health Practitioner and Author

12 August 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

www.tampabaywellness.com

coverstory Paula Owens, a holistic health practitioner with a Master’s Degree in Holistic Nutrition, a plethora of certifications and over twenty-five years of experience, brings a wealth of wisdom to the clients throughout the world. Although many people come to the health and wellness industry through a personal transformation, Paula has always lived a balanced lifestyle. She credits her earlier life—shaped by her family and their values—for this success: “I think that stems from growing up with my mom always giving us balanced meals. . . Back in the days that I grew up, our food sources were completely different. . . We had a garden, and we had raw milk. So it was a lot different than it is now.” Motivated later in life by the education she received, Paula felt compelled to begin helping others by providing accurate and practical information to individuals seeking to improve the quality of their daily lives. She complimented her training and coaching with writing. Her first book, The Power of Four, was published in 2009. In The Power of Four, Paula uses a holistic approach to explain how nutrition, lifestyle, exercise and supplementation—the four components of a health—are not only related, but when combined, empower individuals to succeed in achieving their wellness goals. The Power of Four contains over one hundred and fifty credible references. In a society laden with misinformation and multiple “quick fixes” that frequently fail, holistic health practitioner and author Paula Owens offers sound, pragmatic advice for living a healthier way of life. Her “winning formulas” are based on practical principles that, when applied daily, ultimately add up to profound and permanent change.

sources of sugar and chemicals in the food. And people just really aren’t prioritizing those proper nutritional choices. And then we have inaccurate information; there’s never a lack of misinformation when it comes to diet and nutrition. So I think overall it’s just poor nutritional choices. Tampa Bay Wellness: Why do you think we, as a country, have put food quality so low on our priority list? Paula: I just think that we are misinformed. I don’t think the general public has the information. And that’s where I come in as far as letting people know why it’s important to have organic meat, at least in your home. . . In your home, the importance of having organic meat—that protein—is of vital importance, and I just think that people aren’t aware. They don’t have the awareness when they’re eating chicken that is not free range and organic. They don’t know the longterm consequences that come with that. Tampa Bay Wellness: What motivated you to study nutrition and fitness?

Paula: Personally, I just really got so much benefit from my studies and the education that I was obtaining over the years, that I just felt compelled to share it with other people to help them make a difference in their lives. It turned out to be my passion and my desire to help other people through the information that I have received and I continue to receive. And it helps me to serve as a source of inspiration to other people. I just love sharing my knowledge and that’s one of the reasons that I have my book and that I decided to write another one – just to share that knowledge and really help people with an avenue to have the correct information. Tampa Bay Wellness: How do you incorporate the “Power of Four” into your own life? Paula: For me, The Power of Four is not just a book; it’s pretty much my philosophy for how I live my life. And I pretty much live that way on a daily basis. . . I try to make things more a lifestyle, not only for myself, but for my clients. I’m not about like a quick fix. Tampa Bay Wellness: How do you use the principles behind the Power of Four to help others? Paula: My philosophy is not to really overwhelm the person. If they’re doing my one on one, one of my services—that ultimate personal plan—they’re getting everything with that. . . What I try to focus on with

Tampa Bay Wellness: What do you think is the biggest enemy of good health in twenty-first century life? Paula Owens: Well I think now, as far as in the twenty-first century, poor nutritional choices – due to our food supply. It’s just not optimal with a lot of hidden www.tampabaywellness.com

coverstory the majority of the individuals to keep them from becoming overwhelmed, and to make them not only consistent but adhering to making these changes, is just a couple of things a week. And I write about that in The Power of Four. They’re making two healthy changes this week, and next week they’re going to add on two more things but continue doing what they did the week prior. Over time these little changes accumulate into profound changes. And, lo and behold, they’re much healthier, their blood sugar is lower, they’re not obese any longer, they’re feeling better, and they’re sleeping better. Anybody can do two things a week. Tampa Bay Wellness: Do they combine two winning formulas from the four segments, or choose two formulas from just nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, or supplementation?

14 August 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Paula: They can combine them. It may be, “This week I’m going to make sure I’m getting a protein source of breakfast [a winning formula for nutrition], and I’m going to be in bed by 10pm. Those two things are very simple. If you just try to focus on those two things this week, then next week you can select two more changes to implement. Tampa Bay Wellness: Canyou offer a key “winning formula” for lifestyle? Paula: The key one with lifestyle is balancing hormones, with insulin being the number one hormone to focus on. People have to control their blood

sugar and manage their insulin with proper diet choices. It is just vital, especially with our obesity and diabetes (i.e., diabesity epidemic that is going on right now). Tampa Bay Wellness: What is an example of a “winning formula” for exercise?

Paula: For exercise, I would say focus on intensity, not duration. A lot of people out there are of the opinion that they should be doing a ton of cardiovascular exercise. They may still walk in the gym, and you see them on the treadmill, and if they are in the weight room they’re lifting really light weights. A smart exercise program is one that is going to produce results and also keep hormones in balance. And that is one where you’re challenging your body through intervals and lifting weights. Tampa Bay Wellness: What “winning formula” can readers use for their supplementation needs?

coverstory

An Interview with Paula Owens: Holistic Health Practitioner & Author Paula: As far as supplementation, I have a couple of points on that. Number One would be working with a qualified practitioner to help determine the supplements you should or should not be taking . . . It’s not really a one size fits all. Tampa Bay Wellness: What specific health advice can you offer Tampa Bay Area residents that take our unique geographic situation into consideration? Paula: I would say it’s like you have a major outdoor gym there. Don’t you have a ton of hiking and biking trails and national parks? Tampa Bay Wellness: Yes. We do.

Paula: So people have access to that, and I just think that that would be a great geographical area to live in because of the access to that. And then plenty of restaurants that cater to healthy living, so people can make healthier choices when they are eating out . . . So those are just some options that people can become familiar with. Paula Owens understands that creating permanent change is not easy. When applied daily, however, her “winning formulas,” informed by accurate information from reliable sources, can create the balanced, healthy lifestyles that transform our lives. vital body

By John Kent North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women

The Crippling Disease of

Perfectionism W

e live in a society dedicated to perfectionism. Women are urged by the media and others to be the perfect mom, have the perfect body and reach other unattainable goals. This mindset has lead to a rise in depression, low self-esteem, substance abuse and just getting worn out and giving up.

The perfectionist When you start something like a new fitness program or a diet, do you find yourself with these thoughts: • “I am going to follow this perfectly!” • “I am dedicated!” • “I am going to give 100%!” Do you tell yourself you can only do something if the results are just right? If so, you probably have some perfectionist tendencies. At first this sounds like an admirable trait but in some it can be very destructive. I have been in the fitness industry for about 15 years now. I have seen over and over again ladies that start off “perfectly”, make

rapid changes but in the end, never reach their goals. And then there are ladies that start off maybe not as well but end up with transformations that are truly amazing. What’s the difference? What is the skill that allows them to achieve amazing transformations? They are able to handle “setbacks”. They do not quit. They get back up and get right back on track. It is how you handle those “setbacks” that makes the real difference. People with perfectionist tendencies often give up when they mess up because they were not “perfect”. Or they are afraid to even try because they do not want to “fail”. But really the failure is not to try.

What you can do It is important to not think in terms of black and white or “I am perfect, I ROCK!” and “I messed up, I SUCK!” Between those two extremes there is a lot of room and most of us are on the continuum somewhere in the middle (in terms of our performance towards our goals).

The truth is.. it is not what we do all the time that matters. It is what we do most of the time that really matters. And when you think of getting in shape as a lifestyle and not just a quick-fix, it’s much easier to see the benefits of consistency. When I hear some of my clients beating themselves up over something, I will ask them, “If you had a friend that was trying to achieve a difficult task, would you ever talk to them the way you talk to yourself?” Always they look aghast and say “Of course not!” My reply, “Then why would you talk to yourself this way?” Be a friend to you. Lastly, it is important to realize that you have intrinsic value apart from your appearance or performance. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. When you mess up realize that we all do, dust yourself off and get back on track immediately. The mess up is not the failure, it is the “not starting” or quitting that leads to the ultimate failure. John Kent is the owner of North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women, where we offer you something different. We offer hope and a proven way to add fitness to your life one small step at a time. Fitness. Fun. Friendship. You’ll find it all here! fresh food

By Dina Hansen

Weight loss. It’s a billion dollar industry, the vain of many women’s existence and a very emotional, vulnerable place to be. Over 80 million Americans are looking to lose weight on any given day. 99% of them won’t keep the weight off they lose, and the 1% that do, are able to do so because they not only made changes to their eating habits, but they changed their lifestyle and thinking as well. In other words they chose (consciously or not) to go through a personal transformation inside and out. I believe that each one of us is unique. In fact I believe the proof is in our fingerprints. No two are exactly the same. Each one of us is created with differences in our cell structure, body composition, anatomy and metabolism. This means that we also have our own specific nutrition requirements that influences our overall health physically, mentally & emotionally. Our personal tastes, preferences, natural shapes and sizes, blood types, metabolic rates and genetic backgrounds influences what foods will and won’t nourish us. What may be one person’s food may be another person’s poison, which is one of the reasons why I believe most diets don’t work in the long run. This is also one of the reasons I don’t believe any diet plan in it’s entirety will work for everyonesimply because we each have different needs. In fact those needs can change moment by moment, daily, weekly or monthly depending on what we eat, drink, or experience in the world around us. This includes what we experience in our internal interpretation of the world of our personal thoughts. What we think and believe impacts our experiences in the world around us. If we believe everyone is out to get us, then that is exactly how we will interpret the actions of those around us. There may be a person you know, simply offering a suggestion to help you with a particular challenge you’re facing at work, and you perceive it as their way of mocking or judging you, trying to get your job because you

THE

WEIGHT IS OVER!

are inadequate. If your belief is that you are not good enough, thin enough or smart enough you will unconsciously take actions that will confirm that for you. Such as drowning your sorrows or “rewarding “yourself with diet coke.

On the flip side, if you have the belief that you are perfect with all your imperfections and that you deserve the same love and compassion that you show to others, that is exactly what you will receive. The action of your co-worker helping you would be seen as kindness not as a vengeful action, and you would accept it because you believe you are worth their compassion. Donuts that a co-worker brought in that morning isn’t seen as their way to sabotage your latest diet, it’s understood as a gesture of good will. Whether you choose to have a donut is up to you, but no one is out to get you. There is much more that goes into sustainable weight loss than simply counting calories and exercising more. I believe, and have witnessed, that if a person comes to appreciate themselves, showing love and compassion, rather than disgust, judgement, and guilt, they are better able to figure out and discover the specific foods that help them to lose weight, but also improve their health, their energy and their self esteem. The women I work with come to me to lose weight or improve their overall health. They leave with acceptance of a deeper appreciation of who they are, feeling more confident when they look in the mirror and able to experience greater pleasure from their life and their food with out denial, restrictions or guilt. One of the first things the women I work with learn is how to listen to their enteric nervous system- or what I call their “Inner Nutrition Guru”. This ‘second brain’ is basically made up of a knot of brain nerves in your digestive tract. In fact, you have as many brain cells in your gut as you do in your skull, and scientists believe that it also involves around 100 billion nerve cells which is more than is held in your spinal cord. Why do I share this with them first? Because all of our body systems, from digestion to elimination, rely completely on our spinal cord or our central nervous system for optimal functioning. So if your “inner nutri-

tion guru” or “second brain” has as many brain cells as you have in your skull AND more than is held in your spinal cord... it’s worth listening to- isn’t it? We learn how to decipher from a “want” type of craving and a “need” type of hunger. They learn which foods would satisfy them as well as nourish them so they can nip cravings in the bud before they bloom later in the day. They discover the relationship they presently have with food and how their beliefs around food impact their food choices both on and off their plates. Because at the end of the day, if you really think about it, whatever is going on in your life dictates what you put on your plate and put in your mouth. How many times have you been overwhelmed with something and someone has said “I don’t want to put more on your plate, I can see you are over whelmed, but...”? Maybe you’ve been at a business lunch and it was a bit stressful so as you are eating you are digesting the stress and anxiety along with your

www.tampabaywellness.com

food leaving you with heartburn or indigestion. This is why observing what nourishes you most off your plate and in your life is so important. The amazing women I work with delve deep into questions with me such as “what do you want from life and from your relationship with food?” If they don’t have what they want, we discuss why. Then we talk about the areas of their life that they are satisfied with and what could use a bit of improvement. What physical activities they actually enjoy and would have fun doing on a regular basis, not simply because they have to in order to lose weight. By taking a much deeper and more personally involved approach to weight loss and health you truly lose weight and keep it off for life. You bring the original reasons back to why you are truly losing weight in the first place which is improve mobility, better health and more energy to enjoy your life. We stop focusing on calories, specific nutrients &

guilt, and start focusing on health and happiness. A Twizzler has no calories-but it also has no nutritional value. So inevitably it will lead you to go binge on something later in your quest for more satisfying your nutritional lack mentally, physically & emotionally. Before you start on another new eating lifestyle, I suggest you ask yourself this question...”Who am I losing this weight for?” and “Why is this so important to me?”. Then ask yourself “ Am I ready to eat like this for life?”. If the answer to your questions tells you that you are not doing this for yourself and that you can’t maintain this diet for life, I suggest starting a different course of action. Because doing the same thing over and over is obviously not getting you the results you are really looking for. Pick out a few tips that really resonate with you and do them consistently. Then figure out what’s stopping you from taking action and looking at the cause of your weight challenge? Start by talking to your “Inner

Nutrition Guru”. Really listen and follow what is tells you. It may be quiet at first, since you most likely have been ignoring it for most of your adult life, but as with any new habit you have to practice and do it consistently to create a new behavior- so why not try one that will actually benefit you this time for life? the mind

By Laura Delle Donne-Schmidt, LMHC, CHt.

I

once had a phone conversation with a gentleman who initially called to speak to me regarding issues with a family member. During that phone call he mentioned he was a Vietnam War Veteran and this is what he had to say about PTSD though he never used that term… “I will have that fuse buried deep in my brain for the rest of my life and I’m already 65”. It was clear he had been dealing with the trauma and memory of all that Vietnam was to him all these years.

used for PTSD. Also, whether the event was Iraq, Vietnam, Korea or WWII; a traumatic event can clear regardless of how many years ago it was experienced.

Recently there have been headlines popping up in the media across the U.S. of our returning vets who are struggling with life after Iraq and Afghanistan. Reports differ from an increase in suicide rates to odd behaviors and an overall inability to readjust. In a recent study it was estimated as high as 20% are affected (Healthline News). Moreover, now that women are in combat it is reported that they suffer the same rate of PTSD and Clinical Depression as men.

or violent event is also a “thriver ” ?

Often in many cases one of the explanations for this has been attributed to PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and MSD (Military Stress Disorder). This is all very confusing to the general population. Some people find it odd behavior once a soldier is actually home and has returned to a “normal” life. Others may view PTSD as a popular diagnosis used as legal jargon in hopes to acquit the “unusual and sometimes aggressive” behaviors exhibited by some trauma sufferers. This in itself raises a host of other questions. For example, is PTSD real and how does it happen to one and not another person? Are there tell tale signs or symptoms that someone may be suffering and is there anything that can be done to enable that the survivor of a trauma, combat

Fortunately, Yes! Any one suffering from the effects of a traumatic event can resume a happy, peaceful and fulfilled life. Furthermore, there is more than just hope. Over the last few decades with the advent and strides in Neuro and the Behavioral Sciences there are powerful therapies and treatments in addition to traditional methods of talk therapy, psychotropic medications and support. With the newer trauma therapies we are finding that a person’s symptoms can abate completely. In other words, we are gaining a better understanding of how the brain encodes, stores, retrieves and utilizes information. How the brain perceives time, how an individual views an event and why a traumatic event “gets stuck” and replays. Hence, the term “spontaneous recall” is sometimes

More Than Just Hope For PTSD, MSD, & Trauma.

So, how might PTSD symptoms manifest? The best illustration came from a story my husband recently told me of a co-worker he had worked with 20 years ago. They were on an environmental site in a small town in Florida when 2 or 3 F-16 fighter jets from MacDill Air Force Base “buzzed over head quite low to the ground”. My husband thought it was “cool” to see the jets fly by but he soon realized that his buddy “had dove to the dirt and covered his head”. Jim then explained he was a Vet and ever since Vietnam was still reactive. For instance, he explained to the crew not to wake him or startle him in anyway and don’t sneak up on him or he goes into fight or flight mode. He also couldn’t sleep at night without a piece of wood clasped tightly in his hand and held against his chest, though he “preferred it was a gun but didn’t want to harm his wife accidentally” as they slept. Finally, he admitted that he knew it didn’t make logical sense but part of his mind still had to do these things to make him feel safe. It wasn’t all a conscious decision. Whether Jim knew it or not he was referring to a “subconscious drive that compelled his behavior” all designed to respond to a “future” perceived threat. The formal definition of the symptoms and causes of PTSD as described in the DSM-IV or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are as follows: • A type of anxiety disorder where witnessing or exposure to a traumatic event such as; natural disasters, war, abuse, rape, hostage, imprisonment, terrorism ,neglect

This is due to genetic, physical, social and environmental factors of an individual. Not

everyone with PTSD exhibits severe symptoms either. Sometimes symptoms will simply abate on their own over time. People who have strong support systems tend to fare better than those who do not. It is important to find a Doctor and a Therapist who is well versed and experienced with Trauma Therapy and the brain in particular.

desensitization, focusing on a faulty belief system and changing to a more rational one, and a reprocessing of brain thru specific eye movements. I utilize Rapid Resolution Therapy and Rapid Trauma Resolution (RRT). Together these methods engage all facets of the mind through the use of sensory-specific language and a particular sequence process.

Some common therapies for PTSD are Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Clinical Hypnosis, Biofeedback, Neuro-Linguistic Processing (NLP) and Rapid Resolution and Trauma Therapies (RRT&RTR). These various methods can involve a physical and emotional reliving of the experience, a cathartic retelling thru writing, a systematic

A unique feature of RRT&RTR is that it does so without re-traumatizing the individual. The mind is cleared and remains fully present with the memory intact. The result is emotional freedom from the past. Life can be difficult after a traumatic event for anyone. But, if you are currently suffering from any of these symptoms, especially if they have persisted over time it is important to seek effective treatment. There are now more options

available and a trauma survivor can overcome the aftermath of a tragedy and live a productive and healthy life! Especially for our returning Veterans, it is important for them to have timely care and right now is the time! Helpful website: www.ptsd.va.gov (The National Center for PTSD)

Women’s Intuition emerging awareness for us all

A

re you ready for a transformation of your consciousness, an inner flowing that is radical and profound? Are you ready for an instant emotional acceptance of what is here in front of you now? An acceptance of emotional feelings in which you will experience a constant sense that all is in perfect and divine order-even including challenges? What is intuition? Is it real? Is women’s intuition a fact, a reality, or a trumped up catch-all for a reason beyond reason? This label of “a woman’s intuition” has been scorned, scoffed at, blamed, credited, admired, dissected, believed, not believed and mostly credited to women. However, I believe this “unknown something” is secretly envied by most everyone. We describe this as an “it” – as a source unknown and hard to believe. Yet it seems to be accepted as matter-of-fact, non-debatable, even highly regarded, and not to be questioned. To describe what “it” is, is hard to define. This skill of intuition is, indeed, one that can be enhanced and developed by all of us. As with any skill, some of us are born with

22 August 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

abilities towards a particular skill. Others choose to develop a skill with discipline, dedication and determination. Then there are others less skilled in one area but very skilled in another. This can be likened to body building. Some people are born very athletic To develop it is becoming more and more of a sought after skill. and able to develop their physical muscles easily and quickly. Others choose to develop their muscular bodies. The Intuitive muscle, or awareness, works and is enhanced much the same way. We are born with intuition! Some of us have extraordinary skills at it, and others choose to develop their full potential. Many people enter a course of study not realizing their own potential. They are drawn into intuitive development classes because they are intrigued with the possibilities, have experienced some type of intuition or are searching for self-confidence and guidance. Through the many years I have been teaching intuitive development, I am always amazed and delighted when

students begin to experience their own internal intuition emerge. Enabling students to actually experience a variety of intuitive abilities in classes with instruction, coaching and encouragement aids development. Intuitive awareness is there. It just needs a pathway to awareness. Being validated and confirmed by others spurs us on to continue. We learn to believe in our own self. Edgar Cayce is one of the most famed intuitives. He left us a legacy of insights, guidance and wisdom about our spiritual awareness, karmic patterns, heath connections, and intuition. He encouraged everyone to believe in and develop their connection to their own source of intuition. Dr. Norman Shealy, esteemed neurosurgeon, author, founder and president of The American Holistic Medical Association and director/founder of HOLOS University Graduate Seminary program, credits intuition as a new field worthy of extensive study in a university environment. Caroline Myss, author of “Anatomy Of The Spirit” and other works about intuition, health and spiritual meaning has also written www.tampabaywellness.com

and taught extensively about our intuitive awareness. Both have created a focused study of intuition and spiritual awareness worthy of degree granting and career direction. What was once called women’s intuition now has been upgraded and promoted to a high level of acceptability, credibility and availability to us all. This perceived hidden and unrecognizable intuitive awareness has been seeping into our daily lives more and more. We are searching for more meaning in our lives. More guidance to create our lives into what we dream about. We want to attract all that is great and grand and glorious for us. We all want a peaceful happy abundant purposefilled life. We want to be free of our hidden fears, insecurities, and struggles. Learning how to release those blocks through inner awareness allows us to be clear and open to our intuition. We are searching for new meaning and enhanced freedom in our lives. Developing our intuition is the pathway to self and to our Higher Self. Women’s intuition, which was once considered weird and unexplainable, now has a new perspective. We are beginning to hear of courses, classes, workshops and personal development seminars aimed at developing the intuitive nature. Transpersonal psychology, Intuitive Counseling,

spiritual psychology, intuitive energy healing and medical intuition are a few of the courses now being offered in a variety of alternative and holistic colleges and universities. Classes and workshops are offering us a plethora of methods and training to develop our internal source of awareness a.k.a. intuition! Thus, intuition is emerging out of obscurity to a fully recognizable source of wisdom and guidance for us all. Our intuitive muscle skills can be developed, accessed and finely tuned to enhance our lives, our decisions and our happiness and our purpose. Intuition is a locked-up source just waiting for us to open up, click on and wake up. This light-bulb awareness can begin to allow our life to work for us easily, quickly and joyfully, (my favorite mantra)! Becoming aware of our intuitive nature is how we plug into our own internal assistant. Transformation of self through our own intuition can be fun, exciting and rewarding. Pathways open up for you. Practical daily life can become one of ease and serendipity. Opening up our own internal source, our intuition, shows us how to become aware of the opportunities surrounding us. Living well can be attained. Each one of us has intuitive potential. It is just a matter of learning how to listen to, pay attention to and become aware of how our intuition comes to us. Awareness is the key to what the Universe has in store for us.

These are known as oxygen radicals because the skin frees up oxygen molecules that technically have nowhere to go. The term anti oxidant refers to topical applications that pick up the oxygen radical hence they are called antioxidants. (Vitamin C is one of the main antioxidants.) The process of the release of enzymes also is one of the factors that breaks down the collagen and elastin and create prematurely aged skin.

ummer is rearing its’ hot and humid head with beach days, boating and water sports. The skin is our largest organ and is the only organ we can look at and actually see. Skin talks through its appearance and listening to it can actually be fascinating as well . Pigment is produced by the skin to protect it from damage. As much as you love the look of 24 August 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

nice tanned skin, this pigment is your body’s protective mechanism against ultraviolet damage from the sun. Unfortunately for fair skinned people with little melanin, that small amount of protection doesn’t exist and damage is often swift and extremely damaging. The skin also attempts to

Your skin also vaso dilates as part of its attempt to protect you from damage. These small red superficial vessels called telangectasia are simply vessels that have lost the elastic ability to send the blood back through it circulation process and it get trapped at the surface. When the overall damage gets severe enough, it can set the stage for skin cancers. So you see why we are always harping on sunscreens. But we’re not harping today! Today

we’re going to give you list of reminders and suggestions. Consider investing in a couple of hats and shirts for the summer that have sun protection within the fabric. For guys I especially like the ones that have the flap in the back to protect the back of the neck. Ladies, don’t think long hair will always protect the back of your neck. If you have a favorite hat, remember you can get a lightweight scarf and put in under the hat around the back of your neck and put your hat on. Stop the use of retinols if you spend the summer at the beach unless your physician advises otherwise. Your skin can be made more at risk for damage using retinols while at the beach or on the water. Remember the reflective rays from water and sand are quite intense but not necessarily felt like hot sun. Those nice sea breezes can also make you feel like you are getting less sun. Make the summer a time to focus on the antioxidants that www.tampabaywellness.com

can help re-nourish your skin. Vitamin C is a good option for summer and a good moisturizer when needed. There is possibly no better product available than Skin Medicas TNS Recovery Complex. This product is a mixture of growth factors and antioxidants which accelerate cellular turnover and provides your skin with what it needs to regenerate and repair damaged cells while stimulating growth of healthy cells. Use the summer months to continue to nurture your skin and mix up your skin care program a little. Sunscreen is the single most effective preventative measure except staying indoors. Be aware that you probably spend more time outside than you plan to, so put on the sunscreen in the morning. Why not just plan for the worst when it takes so little effort? Use a zinc oxide based product if you are on the water. The zinc actually works as a physical barrier and there are some fine products out there that combine zinc with SPF. Just because your sunscreen says SPF 95 doesn’t mean you can stay out all day. It is my preference to use nothing more than a SPF45 and then reapply every 2 to 4 hours. The high chemical content that is present in some of these high SPF products can irritate sensitive skin as well as inflame any existing areas of breakout. Do not forget to put sunscreen on your ears. If you running short and can only choose one place to reapply, make it your nose. These are two very common sites for skin cancers.

grandchild with the application of sunscreen but never put a sunscreen on that you aren’t familiar with. The child will not forget stinging eyes and you will have trouble with subsequent attempts to get it on them. Always reapply ever two hours. To my young readers, don’t bake in the sun unprotected because you think having a tan makes you look thinner. Don’t bake in the sun because you think your genetics gave you the ability to tan without damage. You can get healthy sun exposure without damaging yourself. You’re going to get older quicker than you think. The cost to reverse all this damage is much higher than a bottle of SPF now! The summer and sunlight should be enjoyed. It is a gift that renews our mind and spirits. Enjoy yourself with the right protection and don’t overstay. Like any gift, too much can reduce the true value. And too much of a good thing eventually takes the good away. ●

Reflection

By Janet Reynolds

The

My daughter and grandchildren are very important to me as are my two sons. Once more I ask myself my time went where? Seventy sounds old but it isn’t, really. Do I need to keep convincing myself of that? Probably.

Year Milestone

The good news is, I have kept myself in decent shape. I am healthy and I don’t look my age – a blessing in itself. Every now and then some physical mishap takes place which I suppose I could attribute to aging. I try to laugh at most of it, I really do. I will give you a for instance: “floaters” in front of my eyes. These are broken tissues that have popped up in the eyeball and you can see them doing just that: “floating.” They look like cobwebs and are a friendly reminder that your eyes are getting older. Many of my friends are also in my age bracket. Others have already left us and gone to the other side, even a few who were much younger than I am now. I am blessed in many ways and I know this.

70 I

don’t like it and, no matter what, I will never like it. I will work with it as best I can and stay positive with it as much as possible. But nope, I don’t have to like it. Would you like to know what “it” is? It is reaching that unmentionable milestone of 70 years of age. For some reason I cannot accept this particular age bracket. Where did my time go? Do other people feel as I do? It seems like yesterday that I moved to Florida and started a new life. Maybe I was so immersed in my work that time sped by so quickly. I would like to think I stopped to smell the roses occasionally. Yes, I’m sure I did, now that I think about it. Right this minute, I am watching my grandson eat ice cream, knowing my brand new granddaughter is sound asleep in her crib. My grandson is three and a half and my granddaughter is just two weeks old. They live out of the country and that creates a challenge when I wish I could just drive over to see them. I wasn’t here for my granddaughter’s birth as I was with my grandson… but I’m here now... a “smelling the roses” occasion like no other. 26 August 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

I guess sometimes age can be trying. I feel it’s an important factor to watch your weight, to work out or walk daily and stay active as much as your body allows. Read as much as you can and mingle with your friends when possible. Travel always when the opportunity arises but be thankful when doing so. When new individuals come into your life, learn from them and appreciate their knowledge. I would say stop and definitely smell the roses. I feel by the time I am seventy-one I will be over it but for now I just won’t like it - this “70” milestone of mine. - Janet Reynolds janet@bluefeather.net

and infections. It is an antioxidant and protector of the cells while slowing the aging process.

Instructions

Coconut: Coconut is widely misunderstood because of it’s high fat content; however, coconut’s saturated fat is made up of mediumchain fatty acids. These mediumchains are easy to absorb and digest, and are converted quickly into energy. This means that the body is less likely to store the medium-chain as fat. Coconut is also a great source of dietary fiber with a whopping 5 grams per oz!

In a saucepan, melt the coconut oil. Whisk in the cocoa powder to create a chocolate syrup. In a blender or food processor, blend together the dates and milk to create a sweet milk. Blend until smooth. More dates will create a sweeter frosting, less dates will create a darker frosting. Add the sweet potato, nut butter, and vanilla to the blender and blend until smooth. Stir in chocolate-coconut syrup mix until well-incorporated and smooth. Use right away or keep in fridge until later use. The frosting will become more firm while in fridge.

This Chocolate Buttercream uses healthy, whole-food ingredients. Sugar-Free, Dairy-Free, Soy-Free, Nut-Free (when using sunflower butter), Gluten-Free, Paleo, and Vegan.

Ingredients 2/3 cup mashed sweet potato* 1/4-1/2 cup pitted dates 1/4 cup cocoa powder 3 Tablespoons coconut oil 2 Tablespoons nutbutter of choice (like sunflower seed butter or tahini) 1/2 cup dairy-free milk (coconut or almond milk work well)

1 teaspoon vanilla

Total Time: 10 minutes Yield: 1 cup frosting Not only does this recipe contain no added dairy, sugar, or soy (no tofu frosting for me, please), but it is chock full of antioxidants and vitamin A from sweet potato! The sweet potato gives it a creamy texture and body, while the dates help sweeten it a bit more. If you are on a diet that limits intake of fruit-sugars

Health Benefits: Sweet Potatoes: Full of fiber to keep you full. One of the best sources of Beta-Carotene. This pre-vitamin to vitamin A prevent night blindness and other eye problems, skin disorders, enhance immunity, protects against toxins and cancer formations, colds, flu,

Chocolate: Full of antioxidants and healthy fats to help keep skin clear and smooth. Stimulates endorphin production, the “feel good” chemical, and contains serotonin, an antidepressant.

housands of years ago in ancient Greece, Persia, Egypt and India there existed “Sleep Temples” where those who were seeking healing and enlightenment would enter into sacred spaces and altered states while they listened to the mystical prayers of the temple priests who spoke about their health, happiness and well-being. Initiates, spiritual seekers and those seeking relief from suffering have often sought out the ancient mysteries to deepen their understanding of the world and to improve their lives. In the year 2012 not much has changed as far as our intentions go, however, now the methods have become highly refined, widely accessible and beautifully articulated. In the history of Hypnotism not much is spoken of from the time of the ancient sleep temples and the pioneering works of Franz Anton Mesmer – the founder of a powerful movement known as Mesmerism where the belief in an unseen force known as “animal magnetism” was transferred from the healer to the one being healed. However, in the Orient the phenomena of “energy transfer” had been occurring for countless centuries. The prolific author, teacher and lecturer Ormond McGill wrote, The Mysticism and Magic of India where students learn all about the origins of what is known as Oriental Hypnosis. In The Magic and Occultism of 30 August 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

De Laurence, we also read of the profound work that has been occurring in altered states since recorded history, including the Pythagorean and Egyptian Mystery Schools. As Franz Anton Mesmer’s theories were considered to be erroneous the phenomena of Mesmerism fell out of popular favor, until other pioneers found more scientifically based understandings about why what Mesmer was doing was actually working. Relegating the healings that occurred to the power of belief, imagination and suggestion, many other practitioners could more reputably practice what became known as Hypnotism without having the negative connotations that went along with the controversial ideas of Mesmer and his followers.

Regardless of our conscious minds, our hearts are quite comfortable with discussions about energy, healing, love, wisdom and bliss. ll of our energy comes from five sources: plants and animals; water; air; sunlight; and biomagnetic energy, also known as Chi, Ki or Prana. We absorb plants, animal foods and water through the digestive tract, oxygen through the lungs, sunlight through the skin, and energy through the chakras. There are seven main energy centers of your body, called Chakras. Chakras are spiraling disks of light with wide mouths that spin a few inches outside the body through which they drink in the radiant fuel stored in the Human Energy Field (aura) to nuture us spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally and creatively. The Chakras transmit information of past trauma and pain, contained in imprints in the Human Energy Field, into the nervous system. The chakras affect our moods and influence our emotional and physical wellbeing. The chakras are like a map of a person, holding the history of all that has happened to them. The Chakras are the organs of the Human Energy Field. Every life-form has Chakras, including plants and animals. The Chakras also connect to the endocrine glands that regulate all of human

behavior. An imbalance in one of your Chakras will affect the endocrine gland associated with that Chakra and cause disharmony on body, mind, spirit and emotional levels. Reiki, and other energy modalities, works with these Chakra centers where the “light” energy is pooled and then distributed throughout the body via energy meridians or rivers very similar to our circulatory system and nervous system. Your 1st Chakra is at the base of your spine and is often called the Root Chakra. It is located at the genitals, and is usually associated with the ovaries/testes. It is vibrant red. It grounds us and the foundation of our energy system. It is connected to Mother Earth. It is affected by how secure and safe we feel. It deals with survival energy and basic issues like food, water, shelter and sex. Your 2nd Chakra is below your navel and is called the Belly or Sacral Chakra. It is associated with the adrenal glands, your stress glands. Its color is orange. It is the home of our passions. In the 1st chakra we have sex, but in the 2nd we make love. The 2nd chakra processes the Earth energy taken in through the 1st chakra and digests emotional energies into the nervous system.

It’s associated with a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Your creativity stems from here. Control issues, pelvic and reproductive organs, including bladder, appendix and uterus are issues at this chakra. Your 3rd Chakra is just above your navel and is called the Solar Plexus Chakra. It represents your will power and drive. It is associated with the pancreas gland which produces insulin, giving us energy. It is solar yellow. It is here that we use energy to fuffill our dreams. Dominance, stomach, small bowels, and liver are issues at this chakra level. Your 4th Chakra is at your heart. It is located at your sternum. It is associated with the thymus gland, the main organ in the immune system. Two colors are used for the heart center; the primary one is green and the other is rose. It is at this center that we share universal love. The 2nd and 4th chakras have a unique interrelationship. The uterus is sometimes called the “low heart” while the heart is the “high heart.” If the low heart has been closed, through rape, incest, abuse or shame, a woman cannot truly open her high heart. Breasts, lungs and upper back are represented at this chakra.

Your 5th Chakra is at your throat and is often called the Throat Chakra. It is located at the base of the neck and is associated with the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Its color is blue and its function is communication, both physical and psychic. At this chakra, we envision our futures and speak our truth. A clear 5th chakra enables you to talk as well as listen. Neck pain, teeth and gum problems are areas of concern at this chakra. Your 6th Chakra is your Third Eye or Brow Chakra located above and between the physical eyes and associated with the pituitary gland which is the master gland that influences, growth, metabolism and general body chemistry. This is the chakra of psychic perception and understanding of the Oneness of the Universe. Its color is indigo. At this chakra, we express the divine within ourselves and the oneness of everything. Vision problems, brain tumors, seizures, blindness, deafness are areas of concern at this chakra. Your 7th Chakra is your Crown Chakra. It is located at the top of the head, slightly to the back of the highest part of the skull. It is the portal to the heavens as the www.tampabaywellness.com

horoscopes ARIES AGREEMENTS…look back over agreements that were made. Make sure you are aware on both an inner and outer perspective. Take the time to ask more questions. Do not try to mask insincerity and temper your needs for gain. You can notice both the rational and irrational sides of your nature vying for attention. Listen to your heart!

LEO TEMPERING…ones will and integrating a deeper level of love and compassion is a good idea now. Listen carefully to your heart and temper your emotional responses to each situation that uniquely presents itself. Be mindful of the egoic tendency to need attention for efforts—instead gather the silver sword of detachment in your hand and utilize it to cut away that which drains you. Make giving more important than getting.

SAGITTARIUS BRILLIANT…and it’s a time to take credit where credit is due. Situations can grow even more rewarding over the coming months as you engage in new protocols and revise old attitudes. Take the time out to enjoy a variety of social suggestions and watch what can happen. Make the party bigger!

By Imsar

TAURUS THE FLOW…of inspiration is yours for the taking this month. Notice how any walls built up can now feel restraining and cramped. You can perceive and be open to new possibilities and relaxation coupled with periods of perseverance is a good strategy. From one creative idea you can witness a birth of another…and another. Make the time and you will be grateful you did!

VIRGO ALLEGIANCE…is a question you must answer. Where does your lie at this time? Let go of any state of being that seems to freeze you or confine you. The choices can lie between what you are told is your duty and what your deep inner truth is telling you. Break ranks and choose to follow your truth. You need live to no ones expectations but your own. Once you betray your inner truth to follow what pleases another… there goes the neighbourhood.

CAPRICORN RESOURCES…in days gone by trees were wisely and judiciously felled and stockpiled to make way for leaner times. This is what is facing you now. Do not hang onto anything for sentimental reasons or make monuments out of things gone past. Look to apply your talents and boost your ability to prepare for leaner times. You will be glad you did. Do not let fear, guilt or doubt get in your way. Get that saw. Imsara is an evolutionary astrologist, acupuncture physician, writer and speaker. GEMINI PAST DEEDS…can be catching up with you over this time. There are stories within your early life that are best forgotten. Many people would not like for you to be dragging in the old bones. Make a true and clean sweep of the darkness and debris of days gone by and hustle up to the milk bar. You do deserve a break…today, tomorrow and all days!

LIBRA GO AHEAD…there is a picture forming of a new beginning. Be open with all you care about and express your feelings with depth and honesty. Be wary of not giving enough emotional support when it is obvious it is due. Some people in your life can decide to go their own way and it is because it is time. Weep not for all is well.

AQUARIUS CONFRONTATION on an inner level lies before you. You have lots of ideals but a few of them can now be taking form. This calls for focus and commitment and the willingness to let go of remaining social ideas as to what constitutes success. Ascertain carefully, making a list of 3 main elements you see society in need of at this time. CANCER CAUTION…can be called for over this time. When in doubt say nothing and keep your head low. There can be aggressive or impatient elements in the air and the need is not to hide. Instead, choose carefully what you allow into your space both on an inner level and an outer level. Consider options to boost your creative output and allow yourself to reach for what you deserve…and long for.

SCORPIO SECOND CHANCES…can appear within certain areas of your life. It is now time to fully accept what has gone past and open up to new responsibilities. There are always new beginnings in life and the key is not to look back but motor on briskly. Be mindful of how others feel and the actions you take around them.

PISCES OIUJA boards...where once in popular use as tools that attempt to explore and discover a deeper truth. Seeking easy answers may have lost its gloss. It can be useful to work with inner and outer forces that can both ultimately inform you and support you. Go beyond what you feel you know now. Focus on what you are receiving and when a message appears more than once, take that as a big hint.
