Non Invasive Anti-Aging Skin Care & Organic Facials

A New Measure of Health Through

Breathing & Blood Flow Coherence LLC, Allen, Texas is awarded US Patent #7922664, describing the detection and measurement of a blood wave that rises and falls when we breathe with depth and regularity – what Coherence refers to as "Coherent Breathing." Author and inventor Stephen Elliott and colleagues call this the "Valsalva Wave," named after 15th century physiologist Antonio Valsalva, one of the first Western scientists to observe and document the relationship between breathing and blood flow. For Elliott, the discovery comes after decades of research into breathing and its relationship to health, well-being, and optimal performance. "Breathing can either facilitate or impede circulation," says Elliott. "If we breathe in a healthy way, it facilitates increased blood flow, and increased blood flow yields increased health, vitality, and well-being. Alternatively, if we breathe in a sub-optimal way, as do most adults, it literally impedes blood flow." Elliott believes that "slowing" of blood flow due to improper breathing is a root cause of high blood pressure and over the long run is a major contributor to heart and cardiovascular disease, as well as a host of other ailments including anxiety, depression, digestive disorders, sleep dysfunction, and chronic fatigue. "It isn't often that a fundamentally new biological measure comes along," www.tampabaywellness.com

says colleague Robert Grove, PhD. and Partner at J&J Engineering. "This invention allows non-invasive observation of the blood that until now could only be done invasively using catheters. We're already learning new things about the body's elegant coordination of breathing, blood flow, and the heart beat. Valsalva Wave Training (learning to breathe to produce the wave) represents fine tuning of the cardiopulmonary system and has important application to peak performance, sports, and stress management. It's hard to say where this discovery will lead."

Our edible, organic facials are customized to meet the specific needs of your complexion and the products used during each individual treatment are formulated from an exclusive blend of honey, milk, fruits, flowers & other organic ingredients. Featuring: Obagi - skin care line (can only be used under physician supervision) Obagi Blue peel Skin tightening with accent rF, acupuncture face lift , & nutrition analysis to optimize skin health

50% OFF Massage • Aromatherapy Organic Facial • Microdermabrasion or Peel Expires 5-31-11

Clinical Psychologist, Christopher Fisher, PhD, and managing editor of BMED Report: "Elliott's work has lifted our understanding of breathing and autonomic governance to a new level. His work is clearly at the forefront of psycho-physiological research and its application to many health conditions. Finally, we're able to observe the physiological mechanics behind the phenomenon of heart rate variability which is known to relate highly to mental and physical health and well-being." Coherence incorporates Valsalva Wave technology into its Valsalva Wave Pro and BreatheHeart biofeedback instruments. Visit www.coherence.com to find out more.

The Mind & the Physical Body No one Willingly longs to become ill. Yet, large hospitals Are as busy and crowded as supermarkets. In truth, your subconsciousness is seeking illness, Even though your consciousness might not be. When you experience a setback at work, When you are exhausted by your studies, When you are reprimanded, When you are humiliated and your dignity is hurt, When you face feelings of inferiority or limitations In your knowledge and skills, When you feel like a hopeless failure, When you are being crushed by the weight Of people's massive expectations, When there is no outlet for your stress, When you become pessimistic, When you cannot improve your bad habits, When you are plagued by a sense of guilt. By now, I am sure you have realized, That illness is formed when your mind weakens. So pray, believe, and Strengthen your will to recover. Your body will respond to that will. Believe that you are by nature, strong and healthy. Hope, Determination, And Buddha's Truth, Will dramatically increase Your body's power to heal. By Ryuho Okawa, the founder of Happy Science

GET YOUR

Total Health Makeover Holistic chiropractor teaches how to transform your life from the inside out.

I

t seems every time we flip the channel, some type of makeover is happening: be it a home or someone’s wardrobe, body, self-esteem, finances, etc. Admit it, we love to watch. It’s fun to see someone – like our selves – being transformed into homeowners, debtfree retirees, or a “hot mom” with newly found confidence and sex appeal. How many times have you thought, “Could I do that?”

When it comes to the body, health and mind, you really can! On May 21st, Dr. Michael Risoldi, a Clearwater chiropractor and member of MaximizedLiving™, will tell you how. From one-to-four pm, he’ll be hosting a Total Health Makeover at the Yoga Village in Clearwater. Dr. Mike and his colleagues will be teaching about the five essentials for transforming your life from the inside out. These include: maximizing

Eric Mabie, who owns Bodies by Design in Palm Harbor, will also be there to demonstrate some fitness and training techniques. Plus, he’ll show you how to maximize your oxygen intake and improve lean muscle in as few as 12 minutes a day.

your mind; nervous supply; oxygen and lean muscle; nutrition; and minimizing toxins in the body. Dr. Risoldi will kick things off with a discussion about the nervous system, which is responsible for all cell function and healing. Many people do not know how common it is to have a spine out of alignment and just how much this can affect us both mentally and physically. Dr. Mike will explain how we can reverse vertebral subluxation and how to prevent further injuries. Of course, you’ll have the opportunity to see how your own nervous system is functioning. Dr. Mike will have his computer on site, and you can get your own spinal scan for free.

And to get us in the right mindset for healthy living, Linda Wilkerson, who owns Yoga Village, will give us her best meditation and yoga techniques. We all know that it takes a disciplined mind and optimistic attitude to commit to any lifestyle change. Her tips will help get your brain on the right track and teach you how to reduce stress, improve sleep and create a positive self-image that will help transform any area of your life.

And if you don’t know how “modern nutrition” and over-the-counter and prescription drugs are literally poisoning us, you’ll be interested in what Dr. Mike has to say about toxicity. He’ll explain how it affects everything from your weight to your sleep and peace of mind. Dr. Risoldi will show you how to minimize these toxins and how to safely detoxify your body.

Tickets for the event are $20. Pre-registration is required. Please call 727-7979900 today to make your reservation. Hurry – space is limited. All participants will receive a FREE copy of the book: Cruise Ship or Nursing Home, by the New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Ben Lerner. ●

Oz Interview with an Author & Healthy Living Advocate

Looking at Daphne Oz, you may not believe she was once teased for being bigger

than

other

girls.

But

after

graduating from high school, Daphne realized she had the opportunity to make lifelong changes to her health and lost 30 pounds while in college! Read the motivation behind her bestselling book, "The Dorm Room Diet," her number one tip for healthy eating, and her secrets for creating a healthy lifestyle. www.tampabaywellness.com

Why was college a turning point in your attitude toward food and achieving a healthy weight? Even though I grew up with plenty of healthy and useful information all around me, it wasn't until I got to college that I finally realized how much power food had over me and that I needed to take back control. College marked the beginning of my adult life. I wanted to harness the freedom and independence I received living on campus to regain my optimum health so that I could accomplish all the things I wanted to as an adult.

Your father is a well-known doctor, author, and TV host and your mother is also a health and wellness author. Has your family influenced your views about living a healthy lifestyle? Absolutely! My family has always been a wonderful support network as I worked to get my own health on track. I learned how to achieve balance and flexibility by seeing how my family had managed to make health a priority without making it the focal point

"

cheat. of our lives. When we had family dinners, my mom would cook beautiful and delicious meals, with healthy things like quinoa, millet, fresh fish, and all kinds of colorful fruits and veggies. But, we also made room for special occasion meals when we could indulge, which I think is the most important part of finding a way to be able to enjoy your life (and your food) without letting it take control over you.

What sparked your desire to share your passion for healthy living with others? Growing up, my family regularly discussed everything from heart surgery to the effects of vitamin D, so I was always uniquely curious about using both Eastern and Western medicine to achieve optimum health. But I think it was when I realized that emotion — not information — drives change that I began to see the role I could play. Discovering that I could help my peers gave me a great outlet where I could channel the information I had been so lucky to grow up with and make it tangible and accessible — and hopefully fun — for a new generation.

What prompted you to write "The Dorm Room Diet"? 14 MAY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Once in college, I realized many of my peers felt similarly about the role food played in their lives, and that they too were looking for ways to introduce a healthy lifestyle. I decided to write "The Dorm Room Diet" to share all the tips and tricks I had developed along the way, to make the process easier for my peers by allowing them to see what had worked for me. Hearing a success story — I lost 30 pounds over the course of my four years away at school without sacrificing any of the typical fun, college experiences — from someone close to their own ages and stages of life allowed my readers to realize how they could make similar changes in their lives to achieve a healthy balance.

What motivates you to make healthy food choices every day? Feeling healthy and good about myself reinforces how important it is to make healthy food choices. But the process has become second nature. At first, I made it easy on myself by keeping unhealthy food items out of the house, so that if I really felt I needed to indulge, I would need to make the effort to walk to the store to pick something up. Now, when I do indulge, I keep it to a very moderate amount, because I can't help but realize the

harm overeating processed, high-fat and highsugar foods will do to my health long term. And of course, I love being able to have clear skin and natural energy. Fitting into my clothes is also a definite plus!

What is your favorite healthy eating tip? Count to your age before you "cheat." This is something we can all start using right away. The point is to give yourself a few extra seconds before you dig in to evaluate whether you really want to indulge and whether the food you are about to eat is going to satisfy you, or if you're just tempted by it because it is there and accessible. Counting to your age before that first bite cuts out mindless eating, and forces you to make a conscious choice. If, at the end of those seconds, you still really want that bite, then go for it! But savor the taste, rather than cram it in and pretend that you didn't. When you indulge, it should be "for a good cause." In other words, it should fuel your resolve to eat healthily the rest of the time. In order for this to happen, you really need to enjoy your indulgences!

Do you have any tips on how to order healthy when dining out? www.tampabaywellness.com

When I go out to dinner, I always try to start with a salad to put some fiber in my belly and begin the process of filling up before the main course arrives. I don't eat bread until my salad comes, and if I feel I need bread, I look for the whole wheat or multi-grain option and have it with a bit of olive oil. But, don't fill up on the bread basket before the real food arrives! For main courses, try to find something with a good balance of vegetables and lean protein. And of course, try to avoid creamy, fatty sauces and fried items. Though, if you're out to dinner for a special occasion or at your favorite restaurant, don't be afraid to let yourself enjoy some of whatever it is that you love! You never want to feel deprived. So make sure you leave room for some flexibility in the foods you choose.

and enjoying a fun exercise routine, I also make time for quiet relaxation, cooking, lots of walking, and the occasional Korean scrub and massage for skin renewal and deep tissue relief. In a pinch, give yourself an opportunity to find center with an aromatic cup of tea and some quiet time. Do you ever feel any pressure to look a certain way? I feel pressure to feel a certain way, rather than look a certain way. When I feel sluggish, overly tired and lethargic, or like I otherwise need a power-boost to my health, I know it's time to cut back on the indulgences and refocus my healthy eating and exercise. But again, it's all about finding a flexible routine that works for you; everyone falls off the bandwagon at times, and the most important skill is learning how to pick up and get moving in high gear again.

Are you currently working on any other projects you can tell us about? I am working on a television project, a lifestyle line, and developing my next book. One project that I am working on with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is the "21-Day Vegan Kickstart." This is an online nutrition program that starts Monday, April 4, and offers participants a chance to focus on healthy, plant-based foods. As a coach, I will offer my personal story and advice to thousands of dieters who want to make healthy changes in their life. You can find out more or sign up for the free program at 21DayKickstart.org.

In addition to being mindful of what you eat, what other things do you do to stay healthy? I think mental and emotional health are just as important as physical health if our end goal is to seek balance and happiness. So in addition to making healthy food choices, finding ways to substitute out unhealthy things in my diet, www.tampabaywellness.com

2 Nutrition by Dawn Balusik, AP, DOM

Nutrition, Part 1 introduced the idea of nutrition as medicine, and explained the value of choosing whole foods over processed or refined foods for health. Now we will further our discussion by including some concepts from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

TCM Theory in a Nutshell: TCM views a person as a complex of interrelated energetic systems, which include our organs, glands, cells, hormones and neurotransmitters, as well as our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs. Our physical, mental and emotional health is a direct manifestation of the functioning of these systems, and of the interrelationship between them. The quality of these interactions ultimately determines the quality of our overall Qi (“chee”), or vital life energy. Chinese Medicine’s view is that all disease stems from a disruption in the natural state of harmony between these systems and energies; a breakdown in the natural balance, or homeostasis. Therefore, TCM focuses on re-establishing balanced relationships in the body, so that it can better heal current ills and avoid future ones. A diagnosis in Chinese Medicine is a description of the specific type of imbalance, or “pattern of disharmony” that needs to be addressed. TCM Nutritional Therapy: Nutritional therapy is one branch of TCM, which also includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, bodywork therapies, and gentle exercise. Just as specific acu-points and Chinese herbs can be used to treat individual diagnoses, so can specific foods be used (or avoided) for their particular effects. TCM classifies foods according to their effects on the body in several ways. One is by thermal nature; each food can be grouped according to its post-digestive effect on the body, regardless of its physical 16 MAY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

temperature during consumption: Cold, Cool, Neutral, Warm and Hot. (For clarity, when referring to the TCM concept, I will capitalize the word). Another classification of food is taste: Bitter, Sweet, Salty, Spicy/Acrid and Sour, and the absence of taste, Bland. Each taste has a specific action on the body, and the stronger the flavor, the stronger its action. For instance, the Spicy flavor has a thermal nature of Hot or Warm; the spicier the food, the Hotter its post-digestive effect on the body. Knowing how much an individual should be eating from each food classification is specific to his/her TCM diagnosis. To give a simplified example, people with very weak digestion who get chilled easily and have low energy should focus their diet on Warming, slightly Sweet and slightly Acrid foods. People with stronger digestion who easily get hot, and have considerable inflammation need to consume more Cooling, Bitter and Sour foods. A detailed understanding of all TCM food classifications is beyond the scope of this article, so in order get the most benefit, it is important to see an acupuncture physician trained in Oriental nutrition. However, I will briefly touch on some fundamental TCM nutritional concepts that can be used by nearly everyone. Digestion According to TCM: The quality of our digestion is paramount to our health. If we have poor digestion or absorption, we will not derive maximum

nutritional benefit from food, no matter what we eat. Therefore, TCM seeks to optimize digestive function and energy, referred to as the Spleen Qi. What does the spleen have to do with digestion? Well, because the ancient Chinese did not dissect the human body, they thought the spleen and pancreas were one, and simply called a name that translates to “Spleen”. Therefore, all of the functions that modern medicine ascribes to the pancreas and the spleen (along with several other functions) are associated with the Spleen in Chinese Medicine: digesting food, absorbing nutrients, regulating blood sugar, assisting immune system function and influencing the quality of the blood. According to TCM, if our Spleen Qi is optimal, our food will be digested easily and we will have minimal food sensitivities, plenty of daily energy, a balanced metabolism and a healthy body weight, naturally. Spleen Qi is so highly regarded in TCM that there is an entire school of thought which says nearly all chronic disorders can trace their origins back to the inhibition of the digestive Qi. 100 Degree Soup: To borrow from Bob Flaw’s, The Tao of Healthy Eating, our digestive system must transform the food we eat into a 100 degree “soup” before it can be broken down and used. The more our food is like a 100 degree soup before we eat it, the less stress it places on the digestion. This is why it is so beneficial to take time to thoroughly chew our food,

warm it in our mouths, and mix it well with saliva before swallowing. It also explains why TCM recommends eating warm soups, broths, and porridges, and sipping warm teas, especially for people with weak Spleen Qi. Avoid foods which are Iced, Frozen or Chilled: When we douse our 100 degree soup with chilled or iced foods or beverages, we can greatly impair our digestive function. The TCM diagnosis known as “Cold in the Middle” can create symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating and cramping, watery diarrhea with undigested food in the stool, and vomiting. Over time, consuming iced or frozen items can contribute to long-term digestive difficulties as well as certain gynecological disorders. Instead, it is preferable to drink warm or room-temperature beverages, primarily between meals, and avoid frozen desserts. Moderate your intake of Raw foods: Most raw foods, including fruits and vegetables, are found in the Cold or Cooling thermal categories. Just as iced foods tend to put a chill on our 100 degree soup, so do many Cold category foods. However, we shouldn’t necessarily avoid all raw foods unless we have very weak digestion. Raw vegetables and fruits are filled with beneficial vitamins, minerals, fiber and enzymes. The amount of raw food that is appropriate for a given individual is determined by his/ her specific condition and TCM diagnosis. www.tampabaywellness.com

When raw foods are eaten, it is advisable to combine them with some Warm category foods, such as a ginger-based dressing, pepper, garlic, chive or onion to counterbalance the Cold nature of the raw foods. Cooking vegetables Warms their thermal nature by partially breaking down (or digesting) the tough cellulose walls that surround each plant cell, so the nutrients inside are more accessible. Simply steaming, lightly sautéing, or tossing them into a hot broth for several minutes can be enough to make them easier on the Spleen Qi. Another way to energetically Warm your raw fruits and vegetables is by putting them though a blender. Green smoothies are a quick, easy and tasty way to increase your intake of whole fruits and vegetables, and blending helps to break down the tough cellulose walls that lock away the abundant nutrients. However, blending is not as Warming as cooking is, so I recommend adding a dash of Warming ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, or clove to your smoothie. Avoid foods which produce “Dampness”: In TCM, pathogenic Dampness refers to a murky type of residue that is a bi-product of incomplete or poor digestion. In TCM, a food is placed in the Dampness-producing category if it tends to burden the Spleen Qi function such that Dampness is formed. According to TCM, Dampness accumulation in the body can manifest as water retention, excess

body fat, excess mucous, yeast or bacterial overgrowth or infection, watery discharges, feeling of heaviness or stifling, certain types of headaches, and muzzy-headedness. Long-standing Dampness can eventually congeal into “Phlegm” which, according to TCM, can cause myriad other disorders including cysts, lipomas, nodules, tumors, arthritis, allergies, asthma, coronary artery disease, obesity and even psychosis. If we are eating only whole foods, we are already avoiding many of the Dampness-producing foods; the more processed or refined the food, the greater its tendency to produce Dampness. This includes milled grains (flour) and bread. Overeating also contributes to Dampness, as does overdrinking of alcohol. Milk, as lactation from another species of animal, is designed by nature to be made for baby cows (or goats), not humans, and therefore dairy products are among the most Dampness-producing, mucous-forming foods that we eat. Sugars, sweeteners, and fruit juices have too much concentrated Sweet flavor, which depletes the Spleen Qi function and adds to Dampness. Wheat also tends to produce Dampness; the recent boom in gluten-free products is a result of more people finding that they feel better by eliminating wheat. Other Dampness-producers to be aware of are eggs, concentrated fats and oils (including nut butters and fried foods), and meats, especially pork and beef. Minimize foods which are energetically “Hot”:

While a small amount of Hot category foods can be helpful to our 100 degree soup to balance Cold category foods, and for those with very Cold or weak digestion, too much Hot category food can cause an imbalance known as “Stomach Heat” which may show up as stomach pain, acid reflux, heartburn, ulcers, and ravenous appetite. This pathogenic Heat can combine with Dampness in the body and migrate to other areas causing inflammatory problems such as gallbladder disorders, constipation or diarrhea, hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel conditions, arthritis, gout, urinary or gynecological problems, skin conditions, migraines, sleep disturbances, and emotional imbalances such as a “Hot” temper. In addition to Spicy foods, other Hot category foods to use sparingly are lamb, venison, chicken, and coffee. Cooking methods that typically add too much energetic Heat to foods are grilling, barbequing and deep frying. Emphasize Foods that Nourish the Digestive Qi: The basic TCM recommended diet, listed from most to least amount: Fresh, cooked vegetables; cooked whole grains; cooked whole beans/legumes; raw vegetables & fresh fruit; nuts; animal foods. Vegetables, cooked whole grains and beans/legumes should comprise 80-90% of the diet; fruit and nuts 5-10%; and animal products about 5% (or about 2-4 ounces, 3 times per week). To

further enhance digestibility, the whole grains and beans may be sprouted before cooking, and nuts may be soaked or roasted. While this diet is very similar to the Macrobiotic diet, which uses many TCM nutritional tenants, it is also remarkably aligned with those recommended by modern, physician-researchers such as Dr. Nathan Pritikin, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr Neal Barnard, and T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D of Cornell University: emphasizing vegetables, beans/legumes, whole-food starches, fruits, nuts and seeds, and minimizing or eliminating processed, refined foods, sugars, fats, dairy products and animal foods. This type of diet is repeatedly found to reduce rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other degenerative and autoimmune diseases. Nutrition, Part 3 will explore another key concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine nutrition, the quality of Qi in foods, as well as answer some questions about animal protein in the diet. long car ride! Buying your produce from a local farmer doesn’t take a lot of extra time. You don’t have to harvest them yourself (unless you want to help--volunteers are always appreciated!).

Homegrown: Eating organic never tasted so sweet

Here’s how Sweetwater Organic Community Farm works: You pay the farmer upfront for the upcoming harvest season which is November to May. Limited memberships are available right now. You can pay $725 dollars to pick up 20 to 23 different bundles of vegetables and herbs once a week or pay $425 dollars for a half membership where you pick up vegetables every two weeks. Keep in mind, you’ll need to bring a big bag or 3 grocery bags to the farm--your share will be enough to feed at least two families. The cost breaks down to about $25.00 per pickup for 3 heaping bags of vegetables plucked from the ground the same day! You can also pick up your share at the St. Pete Saturday market. Locally grown vegetables with water from a UV filtration system, picked the same day, no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides--a great deal! You can see all of the local farms in your zip code by checking out localharvest.org.

few years ago, I started to notice the fruits and vegetables in my grocery basket were first-class world travelers… oranges from South Africa, tomatoes from Mexico, garlic from China. The next time you shop, look at the labels. The Florida Department of Agriculture requires fruits and vegetables to be clearly marked so you know where they were grown. I had to scour the aisles just to find anything from Florida, let alone the Tampa Bay area! Not only was I paying for their high priced, cross country or international trip, but by the time I got home, I only had a few days to eat everything before it wilted or went bad. Little did I know that we are lucky enough to have farms right in our backyard where you can buy fresh eggs, grass-fed beef, berries and veggies galore! In fact, we’re in the middle of blueberry harvest season. The dark gems are one of the most antioxidant-rich foods in the world--loaded with vitamin C. Ken Der, owner of Big Bears Farm in Plant City says his USDA organic certified blueberries are selling at half the price of conventionally grown berries sold at the grocery store. A pound of already picked, Plant City grown certified organic blueberries costs $12.00. Freeze them for smoothies, make your own jam or just pop the plump little suckers right in your mouth! That’s worth a road trip!

One of my favorite places to buy fresh produce is Sweetwater Organic Community Farm in Tampa. I’ve been a member for years. The nonprofit certified organic farm sits in the middle of a suburban area on 6 acres along Sweetwater Creek. It’s 10 minutes from my house. Sweetwater grows more than 50 different veggies and herbs... including basil, Roma tomatoes, carrots, green onions, butterhead lettuce... enough veggies to make you salivate for a salad! Even if you don’t love your vegetables, you can taste the difference when you bite into a freshly picked, perfectly ripe tomato. It makes sense that locally grown, organic produce would taste much better and retain nutrients longer than their conventionally grown counterparts from California. Just imagine how you feel after a

If I’ve picked your interest, but you’re not ready to commit for the entire season, take your kids to Sweetwater’s Sunday festivals from 12:00 to 4:00 where you can buy extra organic produce available, listen to live music and enjoy a slice of paradise smack dab in the middle of the suburbs! ●

TOP TEN ALL NATURAL MENOPAUSE SOLUTIONS Lovera Wolf Miller, MD, FACOG, NCMP David C. Miller, MD, MA, DABPM, NCMP Authors of: WOMENOPAUSE: STOP PAUSING AND START LIVING

For too long now, women have treated discussions about menopause as if it were contagious and avoided confronting menopause like it was the plague. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to stop pausing and start living. Every day six thousand U.S. women have their final menstrual period. In other word, 20 million boomers will celebrate menopause sometime this decade. The permanent pausing of menstruation is termed menopause. It signals the end of fertility and the beginning of what we refer to as the UpSide. The average age of natural menopause is 51, plus or minus 10 years. Perimenopausal symptoms may begin four to ten years before menopause. An unprepared woman may be blindsided by the subtle ways in which menopause inculcates itself into all aspects of her physical and mental health. Over 80% of American women experience hot flashes, and for many of them, the emotional components are intense (hot dreads). Hot flashes, coupled with insomnia, night sweats, problems with concentration and memory (we call this meno-fog), and disturbing changes in mood, oftentimes generates mayhem in the “normal” lives of even the most self-assured women. The inordinate focus on menopause and hot flashes loses sight of the fact that menopause is also linked with the onset of serious health matters such as cardiovascular disease, depression, osteoporosis, diminished sexual satisfaction, weight gain, and dementia. Yikes! Recent evidence suggests that the severity of the menopausal symptoms is predictive of greater health risks. In a similar vein, there is often too much attention on cutting-edge prescription hormone therapy and on the myriad of OTC health food store miracle-products for menopause at the expense of self-directed solutions. Wife and husband physician authors Lovera Wolf Miller, MD and David C. Miller, MD are NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioners, and their new book, Womenopause: Stop Pausing And Start Living, recommends controlling the symptoms of menopause by following the top ten all-natural tips as the bedrock of a menopause makeover. The best defense against disruptive menopause symptoms is preparation:

20 MAY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

1.

Exercise like your life depended upon it. Thirty minutes daily is a good starting point. Exercise allays a multitude of menopausal problems. Exercise reduces the frequency and severity of hot flashes. It helps mood better than Prozac. It improves sleep better than Ambien. It defends against osteoporosis better than Sally Field. It improves sex better than KY. It provides more energy than a Starbucks double-tall-skinnylatte. Feel free to mix it up: walking, yoga, resistance training, biking, anything that gets you sweaty and tired. Exercise improves mood by releasing internal endorphins, by improving sleep quality, and by improving self-image. Exercise reduces breast cancer rates in half.

Eat only real food. Real food does not have a label on it. Real food has no marketing slogans or clip-out coupons. We can probably eat as much of it as we want. Real food reduces the risks of dying from heart attacks and strokes, the top two causes of death for American women. Real food containing protein, complex carbs, unsaturated fat, and fiber, are less dense in calories than typical fast food-snack food-junk food. For maximum benefit, eat real food with real sized portions with real people having a real conversation, not while watching a “reality show”. It almost goes without saying; avoid putting any known toxin into your mouth (cigarettes, illicit drugs, excessive alcohol, and caffeine).

2.

5.

Weigh less and live more. Notice that weight loss is not one of the benefits of exercise because exercise, alone, does not usually prompt weight loss. Consuming fewer uncompensated calories results in weight loss. Sorry, no exceptions. Even small changes over a period of time can make for good results. Over-weight women suffer from more hot flashes. Weigh yourself regularly and write it down. Shoot for a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or less. Weighing less reduces the risks for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. If a woman loses 20 pounds, she reduces her chance of breast cancer by 20%. Looking great and having a better self-image are an added bonus.

3.

Shape your waist. There is something particularly treacherous about belly fat (the internal visceral fat), which deserves special attention. A waist greater than 35 inches (measured just above the belly button) is predictive of a condition termed the Metabolic Syndrome. It is a constellation of problems that undermine the health of the cardiovascular system leading to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and premature death. To prevent the Metabolic Syndrome, eat foods rich in folic acid (lentils, sunflower seeds, and asparagus) and fish oil; and reduce bread, potatoes, and sweet drinks. Exercise. The fat around the waist is often very stubborn and hard to depose, but it can be reduced, just like an artist makes a sculpture, by chipping away day after day.

4.

Eat menopause-busting super foods. Vitamin E may reduce bothersome hot flashes through anti-oxidant properties and occurs naturally in nuts, wheat germ, whole grains, vegetable oil, vegetables, and seeds. Vitamin C may reduce diabetes and breast cancer and can be found in citrus fruits, green vegetables, and tomatoes. Fish oils improve PMS, cardiac health, vaginal health, and help prevent dementia by stabilizing nerve cell membranes. It can be found, no joke, in fish. Flax seed oils are a reasonable alternative. Calcium helps prevent osteoporosis, the primary mineral in bone, and is abundant in low fat milk, yogurt, and cheese. Vitamin D is important also in bone metabolism by improving calcium absorption, but it also plays a role in many other cellular functions. It reduces breast cancer and vaginal infections. The body makes vitamin D naturally through sun exposure to the skin, so go outside everyday for a walk. Other real foods contain nutrients that assist women with menopausal problems and make great choices for calorie intake reduction at the same time: broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, low fat cottage cheese, egg whites, and water.

6.

Rehabilitate your sleep schedule. In spite of what you may have heard, adult women need 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Start by removing the computer and TV from the bedroom. Take control of your sleep environment. Expose yourself to bright light first thing www.tampabaywellness.com

in the morning, and dim-down the lights in the evening. Save the bed for sleep and sex. Avoid all caffeinated beverages after 12 o’clock noon. Milk, yogurt, peanuts, and cheese help promote a good night’s rest.

7.

Mind your mood. Feeling “not quite myself” is common during perimenopause and early postmenopause. In a way, it is an extension and a magnification of PMS. This is the part of menopause from which the whole family suffers. Recognition of the problem is half the battle. Find your way by helping someone else find theirs. Intentionally seeking rewarding opportunities may require some effort, but is well worth it. Garlic, cauliflower, and celery contain vitamin B6 that improves mood matters. For persistent problems get professional advice.

8.

Reclaim your sex life. Vaginal dryness due to menopause may cause discomfort during intercourse and may undermine a relationship in covert and complicated ways. Vaginal dryness improves with daily olive oil application (okay, use the extra virgin). Talk to your partner about sex. Reduce any barriers that have built up over time. Feel free to be the romantic one in the couple, and set the stage.

9.

Train your brain to relax. Deep breathing, Yoga, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and prayer coax the brain away from the near perpetual stress response and promote health. There is no such thing as physical well-being in the absence of mental and spiritual well-being. The relaxation response decreases the stress response hormones: epinephrine, noreipnephrine, and cortisol, and promotes healing and emotional peace.

10.

Now is the time to stop pausing and start living. It is possible for you to be healthier at sixty than you were at forty. It is absolutely possible to be stronger, leaner, keener, and happier. It is impossible to over-hype the impact of exercise, diet, and mental actions in both the prevention and the relief of common menopausal problems. Guess what? The same actions that relieve hot flashes reverse cardiovascular disease and prevent cancer! Win win. Womenopause: Stop Pausing And Start Living (O-Books London, UK) Available at: .amazon. com. Yoga Poses

Upavistha Konasana Wide Angle Seated Forward Fold

Begin on the floor in Dandasana (Staff Pose) seated on a folded blanket as needed so that the torso is upright. Place the hands on the inside of the thighs, right above the knees. Gently rock back on the tailbone and take the legs out wide (into a V shape at a 45 degree angle or more). Place the hands beside the hips. Pressing lightly into the finger tips, lengthen through the spine all the way to the crown of the head. Shoulder blades are relaxed, melting down the back, creating spaciousness in the neck. Thighs rotate inward so that the knee caps are pointing straight up towards the sky. Press firmly into the legs, grounding the sit bones into the earth. Reach out through the heels and stretch the soles, pressing through the balls of the feet. Place the hands out in front of the torso, hinging slightly forward. Inhale, and lengthen up through the spine. Exhale, and begin to walk the hands out further, moving from the hip joints. Ground in the base of the body and keep lengthening through the spine. As soon as you find yourself bending from the waist, stop, re-establish the length from the pubic bones to the navel, and continue forward if possible. Hands can stay stretched out in front of the torso or they can come to the outside of the calves, ankles or feet as long the integrity of the spine is not lost. It is more important to keep a straight, long spine than it is to take the forehead all the way down to the mat. Now close the eyes and follow the breath as it comes in and out of the body like a wave, providing support in the posture. The breath releases you into the posture gently and slowly, without force. Each inhalation, keeps you present and each exhalation, relaxes you deeper into the pose. Allow the breath to draw you inward, calming the mind, softening the body and creating a greater sense of letting go.

Benefits:

Contraindications:

• Stretches the insides and backs of the legs • Stimulates the abdominal organs • Massages kidneys and adrenals • Strengthens the spine • Calms the mind • Releases groins • Lower back injury • Hamstring or groin injury

Healing Neck & Arm Pain Holistically By Dr. William LaTorre

W

hen Alyn Towne first felt a pain in his left arm, he didn’t pay much notice. The pain began about noon as he was in his office and he just kept working. About an hour later, he felt so uncomfortable, he headed home. By 2 a.m., he was lying awake in such excruciating pain, he told his wife, “Just shoot me.” Alyn called his primary doctor the next day, but couldn’t get an appointment. He then called the

LaTorre Wellness Center, and we had him come in immediately. It was a Friday, and we had Alyn return Saturday and Sunday as well. By Monday, the excruciating pain had subsided, although the underlying causes still needed to be fixed. Alyn had Chronic Neck Arm Syndrome, Subluxation Cervical Region-Multi, and Subluxation of the Thoracic and Lumbar Region. “I investigated the possibility of having surgery, and decided not

to have it,” Alyn said, remembering the pain during the first few months. Some days, he couldn’t even get out of bed. We treated him several times a week then eased him into a maintenance plan where he visits once a month. Alyn is back at work, and can travel for business and pleasure without suffering any stiffness or problems. Eight out of 10 Americans will suffer arm, neck or back pain at some point in their life. Poor posture,

poor nutrition, sitting at a computer for hours at a time, lifting something incorrectly, arthritis, sports injuries and car accidents can all cause health problems, sometimes years after the original incident. There are several home remedies you can try, including alternating heat and cold compresses, resting, and gentle stretches. However, if the pain persists, you should seek treatment.

“I’ve had back and neck issues for 30 years,” said Robbin Hedges, another patient. “I lived in France for 17 years and holistic medicine is more widely practiced there; even their medical plans cover it. When I went to Dr. LaTorre’s office, I knew what I wanted in a chiropractor. But the total wellness program was new to me.” Robbin loves to play golf, and the pain was interfering with his enjoyment of the game. The Six Steps to Wellness Program is the result of more than 35 years of research. It establishes structural integrity to make sure your nervous system is functioning properly; balances electromagnetics to remove electrical pollution that affects your own energy fields; balances nutrition; reduces allergies and sensitivities; promotes emotional wellness; and removes toxins that get in the way of good health. “I talked to Dr. LaTorre a few times before I signed up. I did

www.tampabaywellness.com

the rejuvenation program that included chiropractic care, an analysis of nutrition and allergy conditions, balanced the electromagnetic frequencies and more, and have not had one issue since,” Robbin said. “I’m back to playing golf several times a week!” Your nervous system is your body’s electrical system – it controls and manages all functions of your body. If a nerve is pinched by vertebrae in your spine that are out of place, then it is not functioning at its optimal level, which means your body is not functioning as well as it should. In some cases, this is caused by Cervical Disk Degeneration, which typically occurs in people over the age of 40. The gel in the center of the disk degenerates and the space between the vertebrae narrows, adding stress to the joints of the spine. It can be incredibly painful.

I treated one woman who chose holistic medicine partially because she hates taking pills of any kind. Edith Wheeler had Cervical Disk Degeneration, Neck Arm Syndrome, and subluxations in the cervical region, thoracic vertebrae and lumbar region. A subluxation occurs when one or more of the vertebrae of your spine move out of position and either pressure or irritate spinal nerves. “When I first went to (Dr. LaTorre), I had pain going down my right shoulder to two fingers on my right hand and it was numb. He got rid of that pain, and it was such a relief,” Wheeler said. “Then several months later, I went on a trip and lifted a piece of luggage and it started all over. I had never been so miserable in my life; the pain was just constant. But Dr. LaTorre fixed that, too.” It’s always important to understand the underlying causes of the pain in order to treat them correct-

ly. A qualified wellness practitioner will order X-rays and possibly a CT scan, blood tests and an MRI before making a diagnosis. Then you can be sure the treatment is right for you. When you no longer have pain, you feel like you have your life back. With the nicer weather, we all want to be able to head outside and enjoy all of the fun activities spring and summer have to offer. ● Dr. William LaTorre is a Board certified c h i ro p r a c t o r with 40 years of experience treating patients with chronic pain, arthritis, obesity, allergies and other conditions. The Body

I

imagine that there is no joy quite like that of giving birth to a child. Just as equally, I imagine that the nervousness, anticipation, baby showers, boy or girl, fear of the unknown are all a bit overwhelming. You want to be in control of your pregnancy. Most women want a "plan".

Pregnancy & Exercise For Moms to Be

In this joyful, yet overwhelming experience however, there are so many "unknowns" that a plan is not always feasible. Recently, I found out that a good friend of mine has "a pea in the pod". This being her first child she was a flurry of emotions. While I could do nothing to help with the emotional roller coaster she was riding, I came to the realization that I did have something to offer. I began to do research on the effects of exercise on pregnant women. I felt that the information could be so useful to my friend that I wanted to share with all of our expectant mothers out there. Turns out, this is one part of your pregnancy you can plan! Before you start your exercise plan it is always advisable to discuss your intentions with your physician. There are some extenuating circumstances that may require you to do very light exercise and for some high-risk pregnancies, none at all. Some of the following symptoms may include a history of pre term labor, diabetes, heart disease, or placenta previa. This is a condition that causes excessive bleeding before and during delivery. You must also be aware of the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. The hormone "relaxin" helps to ready the body for pregnancy by making the joints more flexible. This increases joint laxity, which puts you at an increased risk of injury to joints. To prevent injury, be sure to avoid quick directional changes. As far as the benefits of exercise on pregnancy, there are many. Some women find it harder to breath during exercise because of the pressure of the enlarged uterus on the diaphragm. At this point, you may be asking how this is beneficial. This helps to condition pregnant women for the difficult breathing experienced during labor. PLAN to be prepared for this portion of the childbirth experience. When the time comes you will be breathing easy. Exercise throughout your pregnancy helps to limit your fat retention and weight gain. It has also been shown to aid in a faster, easier labor and delivery. I don’t know about you, but I have yet to come across one pregnant woman who says, "I want to make my labor and delivery to be as difficult as possible". PLAN to do all that you can to ensure you have the easiest delivery possible. It is not uncommon for an expectant mother to feel fatigue. Your body is undergoing dramatic changes. This is partly due to the fact that your body is now supplying oxygen for two. Exercise is shown to help decrease muscle soreness

24 MAY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

and fatigue. It has also been shown to relieve basic discomforts of pregnancy from morning sickness to achy legs and backs. While the benefits of exercise on a pregnant woman are profound there are some basic rules to follow and things to keep in mind. First thing first, you are not preparing yourself for a fitness competition. You are preparing yourself to have the healthiest pregnancy possible with the least amount of sickness. You simply cannot do this if you over exercise or get careless. For some of you who are used to the "fit" lifestyle, this may require taking a step down. Moderate exercise has been found to be more beneficial over intense exercise. Moderate exercise also decreases your risk of injury. On the same hand, for those expectant mothers who are not used to exercise prior to pregnancy, there is nothing from stopping you. It is advisable however, to hire a personal trainer to oversee your exercise form. This is a very delicate time for you to be treading through unknown waters on your own. After all, you are planning to have an injury free pregnancy correct? The basic rules to follow when it comes to pregnancy exercise are as follows: • Avoid overheating, especially during the first 6 weeks. • Avoid exercising on your back for long periods of time; this may lead to reduced blood flow to the heart. • Avoid exercises that require lots of balance, a shift in the woman's center of gravity occurs due to the increased size of the abdomen. This in turn increases your risk for loss of balance. • Avoid bouncy, high impact exercises. • Be sure to drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated. Eat a healthy well balanced diet with plenty of complex carbohydrates. • Stretch before and after each exercise. • Do not exercise to exhaustion.

While I have learned a tremendous amount throughout my research for this article, I hope that you have as well. Nurture your body and soul so that you may nurture the little one that you will soon be welcoming into the world. Understand that while you can’t plan for everything, you CAN be proactive in your pregnancy. Health is a gift, nourish yours. To all of our expectant mothers in the surrounding communities, CONGRATULATIONS! Here is to a happy, healthy pregnancy! In health, Ashley Poptodorova www.aapfitness.com

The Effects of Chronic Stress on the Body

By: Rebecca A. Hopkins B.Sc.

S

ummer time in Tampa means vacation from school, barbeques, and trips to the beach for many families. Traditionally considered a season of fun and relaxation, these days more and more households are feeling the stress of added child care costs and the expenses of family trips and hosting out of town visitors. As a result, Tampa Bay residents are feeling increased levels of anxiety and depression as they juggle these factors and many more. Regardless of the source, if symptoms of stress aren’t addressed then people commonly experience many physical side effects that can seriously undermine attempts to maintain a healthy physical state.

irregular sleep patterns and high blood pressure. At first glance, most of us typically manage our issues by using over the counter or prescribed medication, or simply just ignoring them. When chronic stress is left improperly treated or ignored more severe problems can arise, including migraines, heart disease, unhealthy changes in weight, intestinal problems, and even an increase in physical signs such as wrinkles and age marks. Of course, poor stress management doesn’t just affect our physical bodies, our mental health is strongly impacted and can decrease cognitive functioning abilities and our ability to appropriately interact with others.

Organisms experience two forms of response to a stimulus, “growth and repair” or “fight or flight”. When added negative stress is not properly managed, our brains release corticotrophin releasing hormone, a type of hormone, which ultimately sends our bodies into the “fight or flight” response. When our bodies are responding to stress, and therefore in “fight or flight”, we are unable to be in “growth and repair”. Over time, chronic stress and the buildup of the associated hormones inhibits the body from properly maintaining itself.

The good news is that we don’t have to become slaves to the stress cycle. Many of us know when we are overstressed and our brain is able to regulate our bodies so that we counteract our levels of stress with outlets such as exercise, relaxation techniques and hobbies. In cases where chronic stress has gone untreated for a long enough time, we can fall into a pattern of physical and mental reactivity to stress that traps us in a “stress loop”, and can reinforce unhealthy mental and physical habits that keep us from being able to make the changes we need to become happier and more functional.

Common symptoms of stress are anxiety attacks, appetite changes,

Recently gaining increased popularity; neurofeedback has shown to

be effective in retraining the brain to be able to manage the response to negative stimuli. Neurofeedback works by targeting the disregulation of the brain, thus, people can experience positive changes in the health of their bodies, which are long lasting. Not only are anxiety and depression symptoms of chronic stress, they have distinct brain wave patterns that can be recorded and observed. CNS Wellness, a local clinic in the Tampa Bay area, has been using neurofeedback on those who

suffer from anxiety and depression with exciting and measurable results. Their clients report changes in their mental health, which have put them more in control over their bodies. Some of them, with the assistance from their doctor, reduce or completely eliminate their prescribed medications. Now that the beautiful summer weather is here, our children are out of school and the pools and beaches beckon for us, we can put our best body and mind forward and enjoy life! ●

Rebecca A. Hopkins B.Sc. is the Biofeedback Specialist at CNS Wellness, located in Tampa, FL. She has a background focused in molecular biology and works under the supervision of Dr. William A. Lambos, chief cognitive neuroscientist. CNS Wellness provides state of the art assessment and treatment of a variety of brain-based conditions using neurotherapy.
