2009 University of Tampa Women’s Soccer
2009 Outlook The University of Tampa carries high hopes for the 2009 sea son despite the fact that the Spartans will rely heavily on a group of young players who are primarily freshman and sophomores. With just two seniors on the squad, head coach Gerry Lucey returns five starters to go with 14 newcomers on its roster. “We are very happy with our team and the learning curve they have shown so far,” says Lucey. “We are very young and lack ing experience in most areas of the field. If we can stay injury free, we will press hard for another conference championship and NCAA appearance.” A trio of sophomores who were impact players as freshmen in 2008 will lead UT’s offensive attack as Brittan Spence, Samantha Kay and Jazmin Perry will be expected to pick up the scoring void left by the losses of alltime leading goal scor er Shelby Kuni and Courtney Evans, who was second on Tampa’s alltime chart in career assists. Spence tallied six goals and seven assists in 2008 while Kay matched her with six goals to go with two assists. Perry added five goals and four assists. “Our inexperience will be our biggest obstacle plus ability to put teams away after controlling possession,” says Lucey. “If these young players can grasp the need to play with urgency, then I think we can keep advancing.” Spence looks to lead the team at the forward position. She will look to others in hopes of forming a potent goal scoring machine as sophomore Caroline Spencer and freshmen Sara Kneeland and Molly Gottlieb also expect to see playing time up top. Kay and fellow captain Megan Tobin will lead a group of young midfielders that will also include Perry. Tobin, a junior, is a technically sound player who recorded two goals and seven assists while starting nine games in 2008. Senior Renata Figueira will also be added to the mix as the transfer from Murray State University will play her final collegiate season as a Spartan. Freshmen Dana Palmiotto and Katie LaPorta also expect to make an impact in the midfield. Fellow freshmen Callan Hoerdemann and Nicolet Rommel figure into the mix as
Samantha Kay Hoerdemann could also play as a defender. Lyndsay Murray, who received a medical redshirt as a freshman last year, will redshirt again in 2009 and return to the pitch next season. Tampa will look to offset the loss of AllAmerican defender Maria Mohammed with a pair of transfers and sophomore Charlotte White, who started all 22 games as a true freshman in 2008. Devin Anuzis (Marist College) and Pasquale Anderson (University of South Florida) are both Division I transfers who are expected to make an impact right away at UT. Freshman Courtney Peffley also brings strong credentials while classmates Kate Evans and Maddie Dugan will vie for playing time. Sophomore Lindsay O’Bryan also returns after sitting out last season due to an injury. Tammy Lemieux, a transfer from St. Petersburg College, will also contend for a spot in the lineup. Senior Saige Steinmetz could see time in goal after being a defender in 2008. Steinmetz has significant goalkeeping expe rience at the club level. Sophomore Kendall Bourdon will chal lenge for the starting spot after getting the nod in all 22 games as a freshman last season. She recorded four shutouts while posting a 1.07 GAA. Steinmetz can also play as a defender, where she expects to start if not at goalkeeper. Caitlin Fox, another sophomore, played in six games as a freshman and is another quality goalkeeper with the ability to push for playing time. Though the team is inexperienced, the young group of players look to bring an exciting style of play that should lead to a suc cessful 2009 season. A talented group of returnees will mix with a heralded list of transfers that include four from the Division I level. Despite the challenges of playing in one of the toughest conferences in the nation (Sunshine State) and sever al nationally ranked nonconference opponents, Lucey’s squad carries the talent to make another strong run in 2009.
Brittan Spence
“As usual, we set ourselves a difficult schedule,” says Lucey. “We want to challenge ourselves to compete again on a nation al level and we need to push the players to see where we stand. We firmly believe that the team will be back in the Final Four within the next couple of years.”

NCAA National Championions In just its 10th year of existence, The University of Tampa women’s soccer team won the NCAA II national championship with a 31 shootout victory over fivetime national champ Franklin Pierce College. With the game scoreless following regu lation and two overtime periods, the 2023 Spartans took the shootout to claim the program’s first title. Tampa and Franklin Pierce (1825) played the first doubleover time match in NCAA Division II women’s soccer championship history and the first decided on penalties. It marked the third straight year the women’s final went to overtime. While the match was the first championship appearance for UT, the Ravens appeared in the national championship match for a Division II record seventh time. ”Even though it was a 00 tie, I thought it was an exciting game,” says Tampa Head Coach Gerry Lucy, who defeated Franklin Pierce as head coach at West Chester (Pa.) University in last year’s quar terfinal round. “Franklin Pierce obviously provided some stiff opposition. They are a quality team and we did a good job mark ing their key players, including Demoner, who is one of the best players in the country.” The two teams battled through 110minutes of scoreless soccer and both struggled to create scoring chances all afternoon. This was the second shootout of the postseason for Tampa, who also defeated Columbus State in the quarterfinals with a 31 shootout win. After being outshot 43 in the first half, the Spartans held a 40 advantage in the second half. Through 110 minutes of play, UT held an 117 advantage in shots as both goalkeepers were perfect in net. Shannon Aitken made two saves for Tampa while FPC’s Brittany Ester had four. The shutout was the 14th of the season for Aitken, as she con cluded her UT career with a school record 40. Her 14 this season also represent a singleseason school record as she now holds the top three individual season performances with 12 in 2005 and 11 in 2006. Aitken’s 59 career wins is also a UT record. The shootout session needed just four shots for each team as UT took a 31 advantage. Franklin Pierce went first in the shootout, but missed their first three kicks. Mackenzie Bulych pulled the opening kick wide of the left post. After Shelby Kuni beat Brittany Ester to the left side to give Tampa an advantage it would never lose, Jenna Giardina saw Aitken get a hand to her kick. Ester kept Franklin Pierce alive with a diving stop on Courtney Evans, but senior AllAmerican Gabriela Demoner scuffed her attempt enough to allow Aitken to keep it away from the net. After Allison Haines converted Franklin Pierce’s lone kick, Ashley Flateland clinched the championship for Tampa in the fourth round with a low shot to the left side. Flateland was also credited with the gamewinning goal for the Spartans as the match offi cially goes down as a Tampa victory. "I just didn't want to miss it, I was thinking about our keeper and I didn't want to let her down,” says Flateland. “She had played so well. It's a good feeling, but I am more proud of my defensive play." Flateland had marked up the Ravens' top scorer Gabriela Demoner all game long. Tampa Head Coach Gerry Lucey agreed,

When they switched her, we just had Ashley follow her allday, so we only had to do minor adjusting." While both team’s had their scoring chances in regulation, UT had theirs in the second half. Alison Penland spun free at the top of the penalty area seven minutes into the second half, but Ester was positioned well on the right post to make a point blank save. Ester came up big again in the 72nd minute, when a clearance by Franklin Pierce sophomore back Rachel Smith spun towards the goal area. Freshman back Kelly Weygand was there to collect the loose ball, but slipped to allow Kuni a oneonone chance that Ester snuffed out on the right post. “I should have had the shot in the overtime, but you can't get down,” says Kuni. “You have to keep pluggin. This was a great tournament and great place to play. We did some fun things here, and the team came together." Tampa took the initiative in the first overtime and had a chance to end the match seconds in. Kuni took a pass just outside the six, but lifted her shot over the cross bar. Reesey Bernard had a vol ley from the top of the 18 in the right channel just drop behind the cross bar in the 93rd. Bulych got on the end of a Demoner corner kick in the 97th minute, but got little power on the shot with Aitken well positioned to make a catch save. The two teams were similar in many categories, with each taking six corner kicks. The match also had 39 fouls, 20 for Tampa and 19 for Franklin Pierce. Shots on goal went in Tampa’s favor at 4 2. No stranger to national championships, UT has now claimed 12 national titles in the history of its athletics program. Recent suc cess has been unparalled as Tampa has now won four national championships in less than two years. Women’s soccer now joins baseball (2006, 2007) and volleyball (2006) as recent champs.

2009 University of Tampa Women’s Soccer
Since 1952, the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) have honored student/athletes for academic as well as athletic achievement with the creation of the CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica teams. A studentathlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of studentathletes assembled to pro vide insight on the studentathlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect studentathletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Presently, there are separate national SAACs for NCAA Divisions I, II and III. NCAA legislation mandates that all member institutions have SAACs on their respective campuses. Further, NCAA legislation requires that all member conferences have SAACs. The mission of the NCAA Division II StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity for all studentathletes; protecting studentathlete welfare; and fostering a positive studentathlete image. The Division II SAAC will be guided by the following principles: ethics, integrity, fairness and respect for diversity, which shall include attention to gender, race, ethnicity and sport.

UT’s Nickname & Colors
Information from Under the Minaret by Dr. James W. Couigton In the early years, The University of Tampa started as Tampa Junior College. In 1931, the school began varsity sports competition. A committee sought to name the school teams. Since St. Petersburg Junior College, nicknamed the Trojans, was intended to be the arch rival, the name Spartans was selected from the ancient Greek Trojans/Spartans war. When the school moved into the Tampa Bay Hotel in 1933, head football coach Nash Higgens chose the team colors. Due to the fact that most of his players came from Hillsborough High (red & black) and Plant High (black & gold), Coach Higgens combined the colors of those two schools making the University’s colors red, black and gold.
History of The University of Tampa When The University of Tampa began classes on Oct. 5, 1931 as Tampa Junior College, there were 62 local students, tuition was $120 per semester, and there was no building to call home. Almost two years later, on Aug. 2, 1933, UT found its permanent home in the old Tampa Bay Hotel and began its journey in earnest. It has been a journey of alternating success and hardship, as the University has adapted and reinvented itself to meet new challenges. Beginning with Frederic Spaulding, who almost singlehandedly forged his dream of a local University, to the present day as UT enjoys the greatest economic and academic expansion in its history under its 10th president. Some would say it has been a bumpy ride, but all would agree it has been interesting. During that first year when, in the grips of the worldwide Depression, the University’s 700 surplus dollars were divided among the faculty as pay, and the University was accepting notes, insurance policies and deeds on homes in lieu of tuition. There were the war years, when military pilots were being trained in Tampa and GIs began returning from the war to go to school, and married couples and some faculty members lived in Plant Hall on the upper floors. There was a huge struggle for accreditation, which lasted for 20 years and was finally achieved in December 1951. There were the glory days of our powerhouse football team, which struck fear into the hearts of our athletic rivals. Pajama parties, sock hops, parades and second jobs were daily rituals. The creation of the University of South Florida created another challenge, as many believed it would swallow UT. President David Delo arrived to take the University in another direction, and began to expand the size of the cam pus, construct new buildings and build enrollment. In over 77 years, UT has educated and placed thousands of alumni in positions of leadership at all levels of society around the world. Today, its future is brighter than it has ever been, as it continues to expand in terms of academic excellence, prestige, resources and enrollment.
