Primarilyduetofossilfuelcombustion, human-drivenemissionshaveincreased CO₂levelsintheatmosphereby45%since theIndustrialAge.Terrestrialecosystems sequesterandstoreanenormousamount ofatmosphericcarbongloballyandland management,conservation,andstewardshippracticesthatenhanceorprotectthat ecosystemserviceareincreasinglyseenas anareaofimportanceforaddressing climatechange.
Carbonsequestrationistherateatwhich carboniscaptured,converted,assimilated, andstoredinanecosystem Through photosynthesis,plantsconvertcarbonin theatmosphere,mostlyCO₂,into compoundsthatareusedasenergyorto createplanttissues.Alivingplant’smassis madeupmostlyofwater,butmostofthe drymassofaplantiscarbonsourcedfrom theatmosphere.
