In 1889, William L. Mayo founded East Texas Normal College to provide Northeast Texas residents with opportunities for higher education. The university has since evolved from “Old ET” to join The Texas A&M University System, but Mayo’s creed of “ceaseless industry, fearless
investigation, unfettered thought, and unselfish service to others” still lives on in the lives of A&M-Commerce students and alumni.

The Sam Rayburn Student Center is 92,000 square feet of space dedicated to your needs as a student, and is home to more than 100 student clubs and organizations. It includes: Bookstore; Dining options featuring The Cafe, Einstein Bros. Bagels and Grill 155; Gaming area with Xbox 360s, flat screen TVs, Wii, and several pool tables. Multiple screens in The Club with Buzztime Digital Games TV’s with Soundogs wireless tabletops.
RECREATION
Campus Recreation features a state-of-the-art facility, the Jerry D. Morris Recreation Center. This facility offers students an indoor track, multipurpose courts (basketball, volleyball and pickleball), racquetball courts, a 45-foot rock climbing wall, a three-tier weight room that features the latest in cardio equipment, pin select weight machines, free weights, and a multipurpose activity room. There is also an outdoor pool and recreation area featuring a 40-person hot tub with waterfall, outdoor basketball and sand volleyball courts and BBQ grills. Campus Recreation also offers a variety of intramural and club sport programs, group fitness classes, aquatic events, and special events throughout the year and is one of the largest employers of students on campus.
