INTEGRITY INNOVATION IMAGINATION

For more than 100 years, Texas A&M University-Commerce has provided

opportunities for students like you to transform their lives through higher education. You may be the first in your family to go to college. If so, A&M-Commerce is for you. Or, you may have a long legacy of Lions in your family. A&M-Commerce is for you, too. Many opportunities are available at A&M-Commerce. Our current students and alumni have grown personally and professionally and I am confident will go on to make great names for themselves and this university. Take Asantewa Jordan for example. She arrived on campus as a 17-year-old young mother, and, through on-campus resources and support, was able to graduate with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work. She is now the director of social work at a healthcare facility. Jordan’s story illustrates what is possible on this campus. As you embark on this exciting phase of your life, I hope you make A&M-Commerce a part of it. Sincerely,

Dan R. Jones President

IN 1889

William L. Mayo founded East Texas Normal College to provide Northeast Texas residents with opportunities for higher education. Nearly a century later, the university evolved from “Old ET” to join the Texas A&M University System thanks to the work of another leader, Dr. Jerry Morris, former A&M-Commerce president and namesake of the Morris Recreation Center. However, while the campus has changed in name, look and course offerings, Mayo’s creed of “ceaseless industry, fearless investigation, unfettered thought, and unselfish service to others” lives on in the lives of A&M-Commerce students and alumni.

CEASELESS INDUSTRY, FEARLESS INVESTIGATION, UNFETTERED THOUGHT.

DETAILS A&M-Commerce is a member of The Texas A&M University System. A&M-Commerce is home to over 9,000 students, three academic colleges, 100 degree programs and branch campuses in Mesquite, Corsicana, Midlothian, Downtown Dallas, McKinney, Rockwall, and Mt. Pleasant.

Professor William Leonidas Mayo’s middle name, “the Lion” was adopted as a team mascot in 1919. Sam Rayburn, the namesake of the Student Center, came to A&M-Commerce without money to pay for his education. He worked odd jobs for Mayo in order to pay his way through school, and later went on to become the longest serving Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Chances are good that one of your favorite teachers is a Lion. A&M-Commerce is one of the state’s top producers of teachers, counselors, superintendents and principals. Nothing fully prepares you to teach a class full of rambunctious 6-year-olds, but thanks to the E.S.L. and elementary education classes at A&M-Commerce, I know I am ready for the challenge. Marie, Education Major Class of 2011

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE MEET OTHERS. MAKE FRIENDS.

University College (UC) advances A&M-Commerce’s mission in three ways. First, its success coaches work to set new students, all freshmen and some transfers, on a positive path toward success by providing effective course selection and registration assistance. Success coaches also monitor students’ academic progress and provide UC students with connections to other student services. Second, UC promotes experiential learning in the university’s core curriculum, working with departments and other units to enhance students’ engagement with their courses and professors. The UC’s First-Year Success Seminar (FSS) prepares students for the demands of college-level work, and supports students through an exciting period of transition. Finally, University College is at work in the wider community, promoting college readiness and cooperating with K-12 educators in the preparation of future A&M-Commerce students for the academic demands of higher education.

REGENT’S SCHOLARS PROGRAM

provides outstanding freshmen a four-year scholarship roughly equivalent to full tuition. Awarded through the Honors College selection process, the program allows students to pursue a bachelor’s degree in their chosen field while developing their awareness of international issues and cultural contrasts. Foreign travel and language instruction afford Regents’ students practical experience interacting with our world. In addition, RSP provides students with leadership training and experience that will allow them to have a positive impact upon the lives of others on campus, and in their future profession. Thirty students each year are admitted to the program.
