Julie Buckley takes the helm at the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi

Foundation uniquely well qualified to take the organization to the next level. A South Texan from the age of eight, Julie Buckley earned a BBA in Accounting from Texas A&M University College Station in 1982 and eventually became an owner in Buckley & Associates, P.C., an accounting firm established by her late husband John Buckley. After his death in 2008, she took over management of the firm as well as his activities with the TAM–CC Foundation. Through the Alumni Association, Business Council and the Islander Foundation, John Buckley had been an active supporter of the University. He served as President of the Foundation in 2005–2006. After his death, the Foundation invited Julie Buckley to complete his unexpired term on the board. Since then, she has also served as Treasurer, Vice President and Head of the Finance Committee. She has also volunteered with the College of Business, Business Advisory Council and President’s Council. In 2011, at the completion of the Michael and Karen O’Connor Business Building, she along with the John J. Buckley Foundation donated the funds for the Buckley Conference Room on the third floor of the Business Building. As a business owner and university supporter, Julie Buckley is aware of the educational and economic needs of South Texas and the University’s role as a center of higher learning in the region’s growth and prosperity.

“The stated mission of Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi is to become one of the leading centers of higher education in the Gulf of Mexico region while serving the intellectual, cultural, social, environmental and economic needs of South Texas,” Buckley explained. “The Foundation’s role is to assist the University in raising private funds that advance the priorities of the University and to serve as ambassadors for philanthropy in the community.”

With more than 11,256 current students, the University’s provision of financial aid is critical for continued growth, as so many of the best high school students in South Texas struggle to afford today’s tuition rates. Buckley stressed, “Scholarships and fellowships can and do make a profound difference in a student’s life. Less than 22 percent of the University’s budget comes from the State, therefore the University is being challenged to increase its sources of private support and philanthropy to provide the scholarships that are so imperative in continuing to prepare the bright members and eager minds in our community to answer today’s questions and solve the problems of tomorrow.” Gifts made to the University through the Foundation are an expression of support for the University and also a statement by the donor that they trust the Foundation to treat their contribution with care. The Foundation Board provides oversight in the prudent investment of the resources entrusted to it, ensuring the integrity of Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and the Foundation.

A university with emerging research status has a profound impact on

the fabric of the community—in its business opportunities, public life, infrastructure, arts and entertainment. Universities like this are beacons for young professionals who prefer to live in an area where innovation thrives. An influx of young professionals can also revitalize neighborhoods, grow the arts and entertainment scene, and add to the tax base to support infrastructure and other projects. Community members, like the Young Business Professionals, are embracing the effort through events such as the Corpus Christi: 2020 gathering that featured renowned Texas Economist Ray Perryman, and through awareness efforts such as the #RU4CC hashtag. Our path to emerging research status signals a clear commitment to research, scholarship and creative activity across all fields of study. We plan to increase our research funding to more than $30 million per year, increase our Ph.D. graduates to at least 30 per year, and increase the number of faculty who are the leading researchers in their fields.

The unprecedented industrial growth of about $25 billion now occurring in the Coastal Bend provides a window of opportunity to increase educational attainment and develop economic potential in South Texas. Thank you for being a part of helping Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi make the most of this opportunity for the long-term benefit of our community.

While our research funding is steadily increasing, I am also pleased to report that the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Foundation is succeeding in its efforts on behalf of the Island University, having achieved assets last year of $42,068,939.

Sincerely,

Momentum 20/20 also emphasizes academic excellence, enrollment growth and campus expansion in addition to increasing our research and creative endeavors. The plan is helping us stay focused on meeting the needs of South Texas by building on our accomplishments, our commitment to students, and our research for the benefit of everyone in the Coastal Bend.

Flavius Killebrew President/CEO Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi

With a student body that is growing in size and in the number of highachieving students, scholarship initiatives are more vital than ever before. This is an area where the Foundation has made great strides. In the current fiscal year, the Foundation has given more than $1,329,250 to support academic programs and scholarships at the Island University.

The Chapman name has long stood for commitment to higher education in the Coastal Bend. Now, thanks to the continuing generosity of Louise G. Chapman, her legacy and that of her late husband, John Chapman, will continue to provide support to Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.

Born Louise Green in San Antonio, Texas, Louise Chapman has always

appreciated education. “My parents were the first in their families to go to college,” Chapman noted. “My father wanted to give back because of the difference education made in his life and there is a scholarship in his name at the University of Texas at Austin in geology.” Louise Chapman chose an uncommon path for women at that time by earning a degree in geology at the University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduation, she was employed by Humble Oil Company (now Exxon) when the company sent her to work in Corpus Christi where she came to share her life with John Chapman. “I met John at a Sunday School class for young business people at First United Methodist Church,” she recalled. “John didn’t ask me for a date for several months, but once he did, we knew we were meant for each other and were married six months later. At the time, he was involved in day-today farming at Chapman Ranch and worked 24/7 during crop season.” The Chapmans built a life together that included giving back to the community. They became philanthropists, supporting education and the arts in the Coastal Bend area for decades. Since John Chapman’s passing in 2008, Louise Chapman is determined to carry on that legacy. “John was truly the finest person I have ever known,” she said.

John Chapman was born in San Antonio and moved to Corpus Christi in 1951 with his family. He graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio with a degree in business. “He was reserved at first, but I could see that he had enormous potential. He became involved with the local community in many volunteer positions,” Louise Chapman said. “John said that the University (now Texas A&M–Corpus Christi) was the best thing going for the city and the area and he wanted to see it continue to grow.” John Chapman determined that one way to help the University would be to establish scholarships to attract the brightest students. The John Chapman Endowed Scholarship was established in 1993. Chapman was a member of the University President’s Council and in 2000 chaired the

“Waves of the Future” capital campaign. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters in 2002 for his contributions to the University. He was a strong contributor to the construction of the school’s Math and Science Resource Center dedicated in February 2006. He also supported the University’s library and the Art Museum of South Texas, while serving on more than a dozen community boards. The Chapmans and the Hulingses, another well-known philanthropic family in the area, became good friends. The Hulings family established the Chapman-Hulings Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of the friendship of Margie and Mark Hulings and Louise with John Chapman. “John was always interested in education but the thing that gave him the greatest joy was funding the press box for the Islander baseball/softball fields,” Louise Chapman said. “He loved baseball and the press box was required for Southland Conference competition. He had so much fun at the announcement and dedication.” Even as she continues John Chapman’s legacy, Louise Chapman supports the local community as well. She is a member of the Corpus Christi Symphony Board, as well as the Texas State Aquarium Board and the Art Museum of South Texas, where she has served as committee chair, secretary, and chairman of the board. And, she still attends the church where she first met John Chapman.

Since arriving in the Coastal Bend in 1999 as an associate professor of economics, Dr. Lee has developed affection for the area and its people as well as a personal commitment to doing what he can to see it reach its full potential.

Upon arriving in Canada in the late 1970s as a teenager with his family,

Dr. Jim Lee, Ph.D., has been acutely aware of the advantages of life in America. His family was part of an exodus out of Hong Kong, then a British colony, before the city reverted to Communist Chinese rule in 1997. “The best thing about being in America is the mix of economic and political freedom that is lacking in many countries around the world,” Dr. Lee stressed.

An appreciation of the good that education and economic freedom can bring has led Dr. Lee to take on activities beyond his duties as a Regents Professor and Chair of the Department of Decision Sciences and Economics at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. But as busy as he already is, in September 2014, Dr. Lee was happy to add a new role to his list—that of director of the South Texas Economic Development Center (STEDC). The University is committed to the new Center. “A&M–Corpus Christi is proud to be in the position to help our community leaders assess the economic impact from oil and gas production and the expected influx from aerospace companies for unmanned flight testing among other projects of impact,” said Dr. Flavius Killebrew, University President and CEO. “Through the Center, we can examine both the opportunities and challenges that come with rapid economic growth.” Housed in the College of Business at the Michael and Karen O’Connor Building, STEDC will not operate alone, but will be interdependent with academic and research units at the university as well as being involved in the South Texas community. “The goal is to help sustain economic growth in South Texas. The boom is here now, but we want to help the community find solutions for long-term workforce and economic development,” Lee said. Part of Dr. Lee’s current plan is to facilitate further education for those who go through the Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend. “By the summer of 2015, we want to provide access to short courses in areas such as personal finance and small business practices so (students who go through training)

can connect the dots,” Dr. Lee explained. “We need to identify work force needs by looking at the data so we can help plan ahead in an advisory capacity.” Dr. Lee has a broad-based understanding of the economic forces in our area. After becoming a full professor in 2002, Dr. Lee began his community involvement in local economic growth, including work with Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce and Regional Economic Development Corporation, City of Corpus Christi and Corpus Christi Convention & Visitors Bureau, Coastal Bend Workforce Development Board and the Bold Future Initiative. He has served as a liaison between the city and the University on economic development issues and conducted research in monetary policy, business cycles, financial market volatility, global market competitiveness and local economic development. Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. from Penn State University. He has conducted studies with the Corpus Christi Regional Transit Authority and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. He has been published in numerous peerreviewed national and international journals, and has won many awards. He is also the editor of the College of Business publications—Aqua Book and Economic Pulse.

Born and raised here in Corpus Christi, Clarissa grew up with a rich

heritage provided by her mother, Susana O. Torres, born in the U.S., and her father, Juan Torres, from Mexico. “We traveled back and forth to visit family in Jalisco,” Clarissa recalled. “It’s a very different environment there. My father left school and came to America at about 13. He moved from job to job until he found work at what is now AutoNation here. With a MS degree in Curriculum and Instruction, my mother works for Corpus Christi Independent School District at Calk Elementary as a fourth grade teacher. My parents instilled the value of education in me.” A 2006 graduate of Foy H. Moody High School, Clarissa first earned an A.A. in Liberal Arts in 2008 from Del Mar College and then a B.A. in Theatre from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi in 2012. She is now working towards a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

offers a more direct connection to theatre and engineering, as Clarissa visualizes designing stages and technology to allow the entertainment phenomena to bring its production ideas to life in a safe, secure way.

While her areas of study don’t seem to be related, Clarissa has a wellthought-out plan. “All my life, I’ve believed that creativity needs to be a part of academic subjects like math or science,” she explained. “This allows a traditional problem, situation, or project to be solved or completed in a new and unique way. Approaching the world with new and innovative ideas can make a difference.”

Clarissa combines her passions in extracurricular activities as well. She helped build the Stage Student Dance Organization and is its outgoing vice president. Clarissa is also a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, where she serves as event coordinator. She is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and volunteers for food drives at St. Peter’s by the Sea.

Determined to graduate with the class of 2016, Clarissa is especially grateful for the Foundation’s financial support as she tackles classes that are “the most challenging so far.” She added, “Receiving three scholarships enables me to concentrate on my classes and maintain a 3.8 GPA. Engineering courses are very demanding, but a class like Thermodynamics appeals to my curiosity about how things work. I like engineering because it’s giving me the knowledge necessary to build something positive.”

With talent, determination and a strong faith, Clarissa is well on her way to fulfilling her goals. She stressed, “There are so many who are cheering me on—donors and family and friends. My purpose is to be a positive force. I want to be able to use the skills I get here at A&M–Corpus Christi to make a difference.”

While working hard in the present, Clarissa is planning for the future. She has even considered where she might work after finishing her engineering degree—Tesla, Toyota, or Cirque du Soleil. “Each company is looking for engineers who can bring new and safe technology to future projects,” she noted. For car manufacturers Tesla and Toyota, she envisions working to reduce air pollution by designing better electric vehicles. Cirque du Soleil
