erhaps you are a new donor to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. If so, you may be asking, “What is the investment approach taken by the Texas A&MCorpus Christi Foundation? We consider investments for the University as perpetual funds where there is a very long time horizon. As such, we make decisions for the very long term. This allows us to allocate funds in a highly diverse portfolio, which can benefit from investment returns spread over many years in many different asset classes. Our goal is to be competitive with some of the major academic institutions in the nation.
Harte Research Institute
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation
Over the past three years, the Foundation has diversified its asset base to support new elements within its investment philosophy. Our strategy today encompasses both domestic and international assets, and we choose highly effective managers based on their allocation strategy and their effective implementation under that strategy. We select investments in U.S. equities, international equities, real assets, fixed income, hedge funds, and cash and equivalents. In many ways higher education can be considered a specific industry. It has an inflation rate that is different from other industries. Much of any university’s expenses centers around salaries for faculty and staff. Our long-term returns must stay ahead of this academic inflation to provide funding for scholarships and faculty endowments. The Trustees of the Foundation are a community of individuals greatly engaged in the prosperity of the University. They strive to support investment strategies that can provide the greatest consistency of returns to meet the University’s demands. The Foundation board is prepared from both a contribution standpoint and a capital raising standpoint to meet the challenges that lay ahead. The Trustees realize the University must grow along with the Coastal Bend region and go further to enhance the vitality of this geographic area. The Foundation works hand in hand with the University’s development staff, as they are the front line in the fund-raising effort. Each of the development officers must engage prospective donors with assurances that the gifts will be managed and audited properly. Donors become comfortable with giving when they know gifts will be used to serve the University as designated. The Foundation makes that commitment. The Foundation grew to $31.9 million in total assets in our 2006 fiscal year. This is a strong accomplishment when we consider that just nine years ago our assets were around $16 million. There is an opportunity for this fund to be in the $80 million to $100 million range in the next 10 years. Our goal is to be able to disburse around $5 million a year in funds to support the University’s people and programs. These achievements are what enrich Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and what the Foundation stands behind.

Investing in the Future of Education Pays Big Dividends As public universities see fewer dollars coming from state coffers to support higher education, more importance grows for philanthropists to fill the need for private support that will allow families of limited and moderate income to achieve their educational dreams.

hen I became president of this emerging University, we envisioned a campus booming with the vitality of expansion, where the skyline of our beautiful island was dotted with cranes erecting state-of-the-art facilities for the growing student population. Some people would call that progress. At Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi we call it “Momentum 2015. But visions are only dreams until people step up to make them a reality. Without the generous contributions of those who are achieving their goals in life, the prospects of many students pursuing a college degree would be severely limited, and in some cases their ambitions unattainable. As public universities see fewer dollars coming from state coffers to support higher education, more importance grows for

philanthropists to fill the need for private support that will allow families of limited and moderate income to achieve their educational dreams. That’s just one part of the equation. When students and their families make financial and intellectual investments in a University, they expect and deserve the best possible education. It is the University’s responsibility to provide those students with superlative faculty and facilities that rival the top institutions of higher learning in the nation. We are already doing that with the recent addition of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, the Math and Science Teacher Resource Center and the Performing Arts Center, none of which would have been possible without significant contributions from friends of the University. But financial contributions are more than gifts to the University, they are an investment in the future of Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend. A study by University economics professors Jim Lee and David Yoskowitz documented that the University has an annual direct impact of $109 million on the Coastal Bend economy. For every increase of 1,000 students, the annual impact on the Coastal Bend is estimated at $23.3 million. That’s an excellent return on any investment. While just a few years ago the vast majority of our students came from area high schools, today about half come from all over the state, nation and other countries. In addition to their immediate impact on the economy, some of these students will contribute to the future of Corpus Christi by remaining here after graduation to start businesses and raise families. Although Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will soon celebrate its 60th birthday, it is still a fledgling institution when compared with the institutions of higher learning that have turned out many of the country’s most important political, business and social leaders, past and present. Thanks to our donors, the University is ready to take its place among our premier universities. It is amazing how much has been accomplished in the last 35 years, since the Corpus Christi community made a $1.5 million investment in the future by passing a bond initiative to purchase Ward Island and donate it to the state for the University campus. Today that investment is worth almost $500 million. With all we’ve accomplished, it’s exciting and inspiring to envision what the future holds for Corpus Christi and the Island University.

Melvyn N. Klein
I
t’s the Horatio Alger story, and more. A native Chicagoan who spent his childhood in nearby Indiana, Melvyn N. Klein was driven to success by reading stories about America’s leaders, especially those who had similar modest beginnings. The son of an electrician, Mr. Klein made his way to Colgate University, where he studied economics and excelled as a debating champion. But it was a tragic automobile accident in his freshman year, where he was the sole survivor, that furthered his motivation to make a positive difference in the world. While attending law school at Columbia University, Mr. Klein was named an International Fellow and received the Edward John Noble Leadership Award. Although class work was rigorous, he still found time to work for investment firm C. V. Starr & Co. and the American International Group. “I expect students to do the very best they can with their individual abilities,” Mr. Klein says. “We are all different and have diverse interests. I would hope that students use their time in school to learn lifelong habits of being curious and expanding one’s knowledge.”
Science and Technology
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation
His first objective in life was public service, and after earning his law degree, Mr. Klein’s political interests flourished. He served as a legislative assistant to U.S. Congressman Sidney Yates of Chicago. This led to leadership positions on Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey’s national campaign staff for the presidency of the United States. Mr. Klein’s career then turned toward entrepreneurship and investments. He became a senior partner of the Wall Street investment firm of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, concentrating on the entertainment and health care industries. There he conceived the creation of capital pools for principal investing, heralding in the era of leveraged buyouts. A pioneering merchant banker, Mr. Klein has led the formation and operation of many companies, most of which were successfully merged or sold. His long-term association with Dan Lufkin and Tom and Jay Pritzker led to GKH Partners, L.P., which once bid for control of RJR Nabisco. His entertainment industry interests created two independent film companies that produced such films as Sophie’s Choice, The Fugitive, Shadowlands, and A Bronx Tale. Oil and gas industry interests and marriage to a Corpus Christi native led him to a life in Corpus Christi, Texas; Mr. Klein is today ingrained into the prosperity of the greater community. For 25 years his guest columns in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times newspaper championed public policy, the free enterprise system and our nation’s heroes. “A person must make where he and his family live the best it can possibly be,” Mr. Klein says. “I see three types of people—those who act to build a better community, those who sit and comment, and those who wake up to ask ‘what happened?’ ” Mr. Klein notes that a major university is an absolutely essential asset for the quality of life in any community. He adds that Texas A&M-Corpus Christi integrates its programs and services within the Coastal Bend region to provide educational and cultural opportunities that make this an outstanding place to live. Mr. Klein’s relationship with universities and non-profit organizations throughout the nation attests to his desire to improve the well-being of society. He is proud of the research and translational research treatment of patients at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he serves on its board and executive committee, saying his ongoing goal is to “help find cures for cancer.” A President’s Council member and three-time commencement speaker at A&M-Corpus Christi, Mr. Klein was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 1997. He established the Melvyn N. Klein Scholarship for Writing and Communication in 1998. In April 2006, Mr. Klein was named the G. Russell Kirkland Distinguished Visitor’s Chair in Business Administration. He earlier taught entrepreneurship as an adjunct professor. “Education is the foundation of our democracy and the basis upon which people are able to capitalize on opportunity,” Mr. Klein says. “Without extensive education and lifelong learning, one really is less able to contribute to, operate within and be effective in his or her career and public service.” As for his Horatio Alger roots, Mr. Klein was inducted into the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans in 1996 and currently serves on its board of directors. The organization, formed by Rev. Norman Vincent Peale, seeks those who exemplify unselfish contributions to the nation and mankind. “At the end of the day, we’re all part of one larger community,” he says.

Dr. Suzzette Chopin
A
s a child growing up in New Orleans, Suzzette Chopin would wait in the car as her father, who had a general physician practice, made his house calls to patients in the old Ninth Ward neighborhoods. Barter still existed between patient and doctor, and she enjoyed the fudge, softshell crabs and fresh oysters given in payment. Her home life was one where she and her siblings were immersed in studying and exploring science – primarily biology. “Ours was a household where we would talk around the dinner table until late at night about science and life,” she says. “We didn’t get to bed until all the questions were answered.”
Bay Hall
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation
After graduating from Loyola University in New Orleans, she began teaching high school biology in the Orleans Parish public school system. As a new teacher, the important lessons she quickly learned were classroom management and how mentors can motivate students. “My students knew that I was tough, but they understood that if they wanted to learn, they needed to ask questions until they were exhausted,” she says. “You also have to be organized in the classroom because a good teacher must create opportunities for students to learn.” Dr. Chopin’s own desire to continue learning pushed her through graduate school in biological sciences at Loyola and the earning of her Ph.D. in anatomy from the Louisiana State University Medical Center. From there she began her rewarding journey teaching in the college classroom that today has earned her the distinction of being honored by the Texas A&M System as a Regents Professor for her exemplary contributions to the University. As a professor of biomedical sciences at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Dr. Chopin is a strong advocate of undergraduate research and believes that students learn best by taking on the role of the teacher and serving as mentors to other students. “Students become very engaged through hands-on research, where they work in the laboratories and devise their own experiments,” Dr. Chopin says. “I want students to appreciate the academic process and intellectual experience.” As someone who relishes organizing and future planning, she maintains a strong national network of colleagues who step forward with support when they know that it’s for the students. Many of her students have achieved national recognition for their own research. Dr. Chopin has directed Pre-Professional Education and Special Programs in the College of Science & Technology since 2001. She was instrumental in the University’s designation as a Role Model Institution by Minority Access, Inc., because of successes in recruiting, retaining and producing minority biomedical researchers. Dr. Chopin, who continues her research in herbal remedies, also is working to establish a Center for Undergraduate Research at the University. Her teaching focus remains on student engagement. Dr. Chopin’s classroom is one of lecture, Socratic discussion, presentations, book reports, teamwork and problem-based learning. “I like what I’m doing,” she says. “I like seeing how the looks of confusion in the faces of new students turn to ones of understanding as they learn to become our future medical students and Ph.D. students.”

oming out of high school Audrey Gilpin had the grades to attend just about any university in the state. But, wanting to stay close to her family, she selected Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. It turned out to be not only the comfortable choice but the right one, too. Audrey, a graduate of Corpus Christi’s King High School, had a plan. She intended to spend her freshman and sophomore years at A&M-Corpus Christi getting acclimated to college life, and then transfer to the University of Texas, where she had already been accepted. However, something happened on the way to Austin. She found that she belonged at the Island University. Hit with educational culture shock in the transition from high school, where everything was laid out for her, to college,

where she was responsible for her own decisions, Audrey felt lost most of her freshman year. Looking for her niche, she turned to the theatre department. She auditioned for the University’s spring musical and won a part in the avant-garde rock opera “Tommy.” “My first year I just focused on academics,” she says. “Then I became involved in theatre. The point was to take a chance, and by doing that I learned a lot about myself. It gave me a lot more confidence to explore who I wanted to become.” From that point on Audrey was hooked. By her sophomore year she decided to major in English and soon took a position as a tutor and writing consultant in the University’s Writing Center. “I enjoyed working there tremendously. That’s when I first felt like I’d really accomplished something,” she says. “Writing can be intimidating and many students need extra help. Helping them gave me the feeling that I can do whatever I want to do in life.” By the time she was a senior, Audrey was president of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society. She also began writing serious poetry and took both first and second place in a contest sponsored by CorpusBeat magazine. Last year she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and minor in creative writing. While her short-term goal is to become a teacher, she hopes to work in the publishing industry and admits to dreams of the day she becomes a published author. Another factor in Audrey’s decision to remain at Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi was the financial assistance she received as the recipient of several scholarships. Thanks to her academic diligence, she was awarded $1,000 scholarships every semester and was awarded a South Texas Academic Rising Scholars (STARS) Scholarship. During her junior and senior years she was the recipient of the Melvyn N. Klein Scholarship Endowment for Writing and Communication. While she is proud of her accomplishments, Audrey is quick to point out that her college experience would have been much more difficult without the help and encouragement of her instructors, especially Ashleigh Davis, an adjunct professor in the University’s English Department. “I really enjoyed all my professors, but she went out of her way to be there for me,” Audrey recalls,” She definitely inspired me to follow my dreams and that’s exactly what I intend to do!”
