NEW COACH, PLAYERS LOOK TO The 2009 version of Islander volleyball will have a new look on and off the court and will face a challenging schedule. The Islanders begin play in the Dugan Wellness Center, the new home of the Islanders. The facility opened in January and will be the new permanent home for all volleyball matches. The Islanders will play host to teams in one of the finest facilities in the Southland Conference. With a new home court comes a new head coach. Tony Graystone will be starting his first season with the Islanders and brings with him a very successful record. His record of 31561 makes him one of just four coaches under the age of 40 with 300 career wins. He also has the distinction of being the fastest coach to ever reach 100 career wins, doing so in 106 matches. Graystone helped build the program at Division II power West Texas A&M and looks to do the same on the Island as he begins his first venture into

Division I volleyball. Helping him are a pair of former players from WTAMU. Kendra Potts has been Graystone’s assistant coach for the past four years after completing a very successful collegiate career at the university. The second assistant coach is Rachel Altman, who played at WTAMU from 2003-2006 and was an assistant coach for Hereford High School last season when it won the UIL 4A State Volleyball Championship. Potts was a three-time AllAmerican, four-time All-Region and four-time All-Conference player under Graystone at WTAMU. Altman was named NCAA All-Region, AllConference and was a member of the NCAA Elite Eight All-Tournament team during her senior season at WTAMU. The Islander team is made up of nine returning players and five newcomers to comprise the 14 members of Graystone’s first season as the head coach. Returnees include liberos Kandyce Nielson, Victoria S Sookiasian and Tamara Wostal, outside h hitters Jessica Korda, Megan Luber and W Whitney Wehring, setter Jessica Jennett a and middle blockers C.J. Downey a Diandra Torres. The newcomers and a outside hitters Emma Ridley and are S Sheridan Paulus, setter Courtney W Whipisznyski, middle blocker Ariel C Carlson and opposite hitter Shannon H Hullum. With the wealth of depth in s some areas and a lack of depth in others, s some players will be asked to do double d duty and play multiple positions in the e early part of the season until settling i into specific roles. “We have a couple of players t that are bouncing around to different p positions, cross-training a little bit,” s said Graystone. “By the first weekend w should know pretty well what our we l lineup looks like.” What is for certain for the

JESSICA KORDA SOPHOMORE Islanders is that there will be a mix of new and old players on the court at any given moment, with the veteran players providing a big part of the play while some of the newcomers get adjusted to the team and the feel of Division I volleyball. “We will let the roles develop naturally and see where they fit in with the overall scheme of things,” said Graystone. “With all 14 of the players seeing action, you could see any of those playing a big role on any given night.” The setters will have some lofty expectations to meet as they will be coached by Potts. Potts was a recordsetting player under Graystone and will help the players with the technique and communication at the position. “If Kendra spends a season with anybody they will improve significantly,” said Graystone. “Having her working with them everyday will go a long way in helping them get better.” The lone returning setter who saw

KANDYCE NIELSON JUNIOR significant signifi cant time at the position last season is Jennett, who competed in 21 of the 26 total Islander matches and recorded 67 assists, 10 service aces and 67 digs. New to the team will be Wypisznyski, a 6-1 freshman from Rancho Cucamonga, Cailf. Wypisznyski will add some height to the setter position, a rare occurrence for the Islanders. At libero, the Islanders return three players from last year’s team and will use a combination of all three players during the season. Junior Kandyce Nielson is the top returnee, leading the entire team with 306 digs while adding 17 service aces a year ago. She will be assisted at the position by sophomores Victoria Sookiasian and Tamara Wostal. Sookiasian notched 109 digs and 10 service aces in 25 matches while Wostal added 35 digs in just nine matches a year ago. The middle blocker position consists of one sophomore, one redshirt freshman and one true freshman.

D Diandra Torres is a 6-2 sophomore w will be in her second year with who t volleyball team after playing in 16 the m matches and tallying 25 kills last season. S also added 18 total blocks for the She s season. C.J. Downey red-shirted last s season and will look to contribute on t court this season after a year of the l learning. True freshman Ariel Carlson i a 6-2 freshman from Minnesota is w should see significant time at the who p position. Torres’ and Carlson’s height w give the Islanders a significant will a advantage that they have not enjoyed in t past as they have five players that the a 6-0 or taller. are Opposite hitter will also feature a added height, as 6-0 freshman transfer S Shannon Hullum will see significant time i her first season at TAMUCC. Hullum in t transferred from Eastern Illinois, where s red-shirted, but is returning to her she h home state as she is originally from the city of Van near the Dallas area. The outside hitter spot is more of a mix, with multiple returnees and newcomers making up the depth at the position. The top returning attacker from last year’s team, Jessica Korda is among those who will provide stability at the position. Korda recorded 202 kills and 30 total blocks in 26 matches last season. Sophomore Whitney Wehring returns after playing in 16 matches and recording 22 kills last season. Meagan Luber played in 10 matches last season and posted eight kills in limited action. The newcomers are freshman Sheridan Paulus and junior transfer Emma Ridley. Paulus comes from Arizona and is a 5-11 hitter that will see some valuable time at the position. Ridley is a transfer from Tulsa where she helped her team claim the Conference USA tournament title in her freshman year. She will be looked at to provide a potent scoring option for the Islanders this season. “Emma can put the ball away

TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI

and score a lot of points for us,” said Graystone. “All of the newcomers will have a chance to do some good things this year, but we will rely on the returnees quite a bit as well.” “When someone shows that they are ready to play then they will get that chance.” The Islanders look forward to the season and should be much improved from a year ago. Graystone’s focus is to improve the overall program attitude and level of play. His first year will be a test as he learns his new players and gets them to buy into his vision of the program. “We are coming into this with no preconceived ideas,” said Graystone. “We just want to get better everyday.”

She is a terrific young coach that has been successful at both levels.” Before coming to the Island, Potts spent eight seasons at West Texas A&M. Prior to spending four seasons on Graystone’s coach staff as an assistant, she spent four years as a integral part of the Lady Buffs’ roster. Potts was a standout settert for WTAMU, being named All-Lone Star Conference all four years of her career, while also receiving the LSC Freshman of the Year award. She was named LSC South Offensive player of the year following her senior season. Potts was also a three-time AVCA All-American and four-time All-Southwest Region player. In 2002, Potts was named the LSC Tournament MVP and led her team to its fourth-straight conference title and NCAA tournament trip. The Lady Buffs made it all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II volleyball tournament under the leadership of Potts. She finished her career as just the 12th person to ever reach 6,000 career assists in NCAA DII history with a total of 6,087. Her assists put her at 10th on the all-time assists list and third in the career average list with 12.58 APG at the time. “She will fit in perfectly with what we want to do here, she has been a winner as both a player and a coach,” said Graystone. “She knows how to win and how to help create that mindset in our players.” As an assistant to Graystone the past four seasons. Potts helped guide WT to two third-place finishes in the Elite Eight. The Lady Buffs amassed a record of 131-27 in her four seasons. Altman’s teams were 109-38 in her four years with the Lady Buffs and made it to the Division II Elite Eight during her senior season. Altman became the 6th-leading attacker in Lady Buffs history, amassing 1,452 kills in her four-year career. In addition to her duties on the court, Altman will also prepare scouting reports, evaluate prospects and assist with team travel and game video exchange. TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI... ...ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM FITZPATRICK Timothy Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic department on Wednesday, Aug. 19 after spending the past four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana University athletic department. He fills the position that had been vacated since 2008. Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic director at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, department website, and publications. During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21,000,000 contract with Adidas and worked extensively with Learfield Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9,000,000 in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help generate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in excess of budgeted projections, a 15-percent improvement. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPN-AM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000. Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He

was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members,

the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and

field, and volleyball. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Southland Conference football ranks among the best Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leagues in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In 2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advanced to the 2002 national championship contest, the sixth such title game appearance since the league joined FCS in 1982. In addition to football, the Southland Conference can point to a number of accomplishments in all sports. Men’s basketball has experienced a tremendous amount of success during the Southland’s 45-plus years. The league has sent two teams to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, as well as a squad to the NIT Final Four. Basketball stars Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Jeff Foster, Dwight “Bo” Lamar, Andrew Toney, Devin Brown, and Mike Oliver played in the Southland Conference. In 2006, Northwestern State, playing as the No. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament, defeated No. 3 seed Iowa, 64-63, in firstround action. In women’s basketball, the Southland also has its share of tradition with LouisianaMonroe advancing to the 1985 NCAA Women’s Final Four, and Stephen F. Austin sustaining itself as one of the most successful programs in the history of the sport. In 2008, the Ladyjacks became the sixth program in NCAA Division I history to record more than 800 wins, joining Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Texas and James Madison. Baseball has emerged as a huge Southland Conference strength with the league earning numerous national rankings and NCAA Tournament berths. The Southland consistently ranks among the top-10 conferences in the country. Major leaguers such as Ben Sheets, the league’s highest draft pick (10th in 1999 by the Milwaukee Brewers), Micah Hoffpauir, Hunter Pence, David Segui, Brian Lawrence, Ben Broussard, Chuck Finley, Jerald Clark, and Terry Matthews once played in the league. Former UT Arlington short-

stop, Trey Hillman, a three-time All-Southland selection from 1983-85, was named the manager for the Kansas City Royals following the 2007 season and coached the American League in the MLB All-Star Game this past July. Softball continues to enjoy success on a national level, as the league has knocked off at least one nationally ranked opponent since 1995, including a win by McNeese State over 19th-ranked LSU in 2009. In the 2003 NCAA Tournament, UT Arlington and Texas State enjoyed unprecedented success as each won two games in the national event. The Southland has a proud history in volleyball as UT Arlington has represented the conference eight times in the NCAA tournament, advancing all the way to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four in 1989. In 2006, Stephen F. Austin moved to the second round following an opening-round win against Alabama. Track and field has also served as a proud asset for the Southland Conference as the league has produced numerous national champions and Olympic medalists. The Southland boasts 27 men and three women student-athletes who have won NCAA track and field national championships, including A&M-Corpus Christi’s Shadrack Songok (10,000-meter run) in 2007 and 2008 and McNeese State’s Brad Gebauer (pole vault) in 2007. The league has also produced U.S. Olympic track and field medalists Earl Bell, Thomas Hill, Al Joyner and Charles Austin, Liudmila Litvinova, along with other Olympians. Golf has traditionally been a strong Southland sport as exemplified by Lamar men’s golfer Chris Stroud, who finished third individually at the 2003 NCAA National Championship and is a current member of the PGA Tour. The league has sent multiple teams into postseason play on numerous occasions, including each of the previous two seasons with both Lamar and UT Arlington qualifying for a regional. Additionally, Southland tennis has also experienced national prominence. UT Arlington AllAmerican Andy Leber was the 2002 ITA/ Ted Farnsworth National Senior Co-Player of the Year after a 43-3 record and earning the nation’s No. 2 ranking. In women’s tennis, Southeastern Louisiana won 46 consecutive conference matches during a fouryear period that began in 2005.

TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI

The conference has increased sponsorship and championships opportunities for female student-athletes in recent years, adding women’s golf and soccer as league sports. In 2007, Stephen F. Austin became the first Southland team to score a goal in the NCAA tournament, while Texas State became the first women’s golf program to compete in the NCAA tournament. The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities. With the F.L. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete.
