SEASON PREVIEW
After a third-place finish in the Southland Conference standings the past two years, the 2010-11 Islanders men’s basketball team will return four starters as it looks to contend for its second title since joining the league in the 2006-07 season. Seniors Justin Reynolds, Horace Bond, Demond Watt and Antonio Topps will lead nine returning players and seven newcomers in head coach Perry Clark’s fourth season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Watt is the top returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 12.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game a season ago. Reynolds was close behind with 9.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game average. Both players were honored in the preseason as second team All-Southland honorees.
Justin Reynolds
“I think whenever you look at losing five seniors that have played a lot of minutes, you think you’re in a rebuilding mode,” Clark said. “The luxury we have with having a nucleus with four seniors, three of which have started a lot of basketball games, puts us in a unique situation where though we have a lot of new faces, we do have some orace familiarity in what we do in some ond key positions. We need their leadership early on in the season to be able to deal with a competitive and tough nonconference schedule until the young guys get their feet under them.” In addition to the seniors, the Islanders also return juniors Jawan Nelson and Jeremy Allen to round out the upper classmen. Sophomores Terence Jones and Michael Bables make up the final two returnees. The biggest task for the Islanders is figuring out how they will replace the nearly 20 points per game that Kevin Palmer contributed as a senior last season. The First Team AllSouthland performer averaged 19.7 points per game a year ago to lead the team. The coaching staff brought in seven newcomers to help soften the impact of Palmer’s departure. Kevin Lynch, Chris Mast and Garland Judkins transferred to the Islanders while Jaamon Echols, Hollis Hill, Ted Wang and Darren Warren made their way to the Island from high school. Lynch will not be eligible this season due to NCAA transfer rules.

SEASON PREVIEW
Demond Watt “I think one of the things we have improved is our ball handling,” Clark said. “With bringing in Garland Judkins, Hollis Hill and Jaamon Echols, you’ve got three guys that have the ability to play with the basketball that can really attack the basket. Plus, I think that we lost guys that had the ability to shoot the basketball, and with those three and Darren Warren, we have added guys that will pick up for the guys that we lost. “We need, certainly, the younger guys to get some experience early,” he added. “I love our competitiveness, I love our toughness, we just have to improve as the season progresses.” The addition of the newcomers to a solid group of returners has the Islanders optimistic they can compete with any team in the conference. The Islanders schedule this season will test the team early and often in preparation for the Southland Conference slate. In the first month of the season, the Islanders will host Texas
A&M at the American Bank Center before taking to the road for a stretch that includes five games, including four in the Las Vegas Invitational. They start the trip in Stillwater, Okla. at Oklahoma State before taking part in on-campus games of the Las Vegas Invitational. The Islanders play at Ohio and at Kansas before traveling to Las Vegas for contests against Bethune-Cookman and either Northern Colorado or Valparaiso. Other big pre-conference games for the Islanders include hosting Houston and road games at Marquette, Memphis and Texas Tech. In addition to those contests, the Islanders will play in the Dr. Pepper Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. The addition of two new members to the coaching staff also has Clark hopeful to improve the Islanders standing in the league and compete for a Southland Championship. Kim Lewis, a former player for Clark at Tulane, will be in his first season with the Islanders after spending two seasons as an assistant at Tulane and has been an assistant in the Southland before, coaching on the 200203 McNeese State staff. Mark Dannhoff was also added to the staff and brings over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience to the staff. Dannhoff was most recently an assistant coach at Texas-Pan American. With the additions to the coaching staff to go along with the new players and returning starters, the Islanders are erence poised to make a run for a Southland ones Conference Championship.

Clark
Head Coach Fourth Season Gettysburg (1974) Veteran college coach Perry Clark enters his fourth season as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach in 2010-11 needing just six wins to join the 300-win club. Just the second head coach in the program’s history, Clark took over the program after Ronnie Arrow, who built the program from the ground up, departed after leading the Islanders to the NCAA Tournament in 2006-07. Clark has over 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 15 years combined as head coach at both Tulane University and the University of Miami (Fla.). As a head coach, Clark has a 294-249 record including seven 20-win seasons and nine postseason appearances. He is entering his 19th season as a head coach this season. The past two seasons have seen the Islanders win 35 games under Clark. In both seasons, the Islanders made runs to the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament after finishing second in the West Division each year. In 2009-10, Clark’s team was led by Kevin Palmer, who was a first-team All-Southland Conference performer, finished third in scoring and was tops in the conference with 2.5 steals in the regular season. Palmer finished the season 32nd in the nation in scoring and 18th in steals. Demond Watt was a second-team all-conference selection. Watt, who had a career season, finished the year with 12.7 points and 7.8 rebounds a game. He shot 65.8 percent from the floor to lead the conference, just missing the minimum qualification to finish as the national leader. Year two in the Clark era saw the Islanders make tremendous strides on the court despite fielding a team in which no player had more than a season of NCAA Division I experience. Clark’s team doubled its win total in 2008-09, finishing 18-15. Led by Palmer, who was the Southland Newcomer of the Year after leading the league in scoring with 18.2 points per game, the Islanders reached the Southland Conference semifinals. Palmer also led the league and was 11th in the nation with 2.6 steals. The junior had several game-winning shots including a half-court shot in an overtime win at Georgia. Justin Reynolds earned honorable mention All-Southland honors as a sophomore after scoring 8.1 points a game and grabbing 4.7 rebounds. In his first season with the Islanders, Clark helped coach Chris Daniels to a third-team All-Southland Conference selection as he became the all-time leading scorer in Islander history. Reynolds had one of the top seasons by a freshman under Clark’s guidance. Two players off his first team are
continuing their careers. Daniels is playing internationally, while Will Bullard is a member of the Harlem Globetrotters. The Hyattsville, Md. native has been part of building some of the nation’s top programs including his remarkable rebuilding job at Tulane as well as Miami. Clark was hired by Tulane on July 16, 1988, and immediately set forth on rebuilding a program that had been dismantled following NCAA sanctions. But Clark did more than just rebuild the Tulane program, he brought it into the national spotlight. In 11 seasons at Tulane, Clark compiled a 185-145 (.561) record, had six 20-win seasons, seven postseason appearances (3 NCAA, 4 NIT) and won the Metro Conference championship in 1992. He was the 1992 National Coach of the Year and a two-time Metro Conference Coach of the Year (1991, 1992). Clark was inducted into the Tulane Hall of Fame last fall after being inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame during the 2008 season.

After going 4-24 in the 1989-90 season, Tulane was 15-13 the next year and Clark was named the Metro Conference Coach of the Year. In 1991-92, Tulane would remain ranked for 11 consecutive weeks en route to a 22-9 season, its first Metro title, a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a firstround win over St. John’s. Clark and his staff followed up the next season signing one of the nation’s top recruiting classes. In 1993-94, despite half the team’s scoring and rebounding production coming from freshmen, Clark and the Green Wave were in postseason play again, reaching the second round of the NIT. In 1995, Tulane was back in the NCAA Tournament, winning another first-round game and posting the second-most victories in school history (23). The next season, the Wave made its deepest run ever in postseason, reaching the NIT Final Four and finishing 22-10. The postseason and 20-win streaks continued in 1996-97. He took over the program at Miami in 2000 and spent four seasons with the Hurricanes, where he led them to a 65-54 record. In his first three seasons with the program, he accumulated 51 wins, the most ever by a Hurricane coach and became the only Miami coach to take the Hurricanes to the postseason in each of his first two seasons. Clark’s 2001-02 Hurricane squad finished 24-8 and received the school’s fourth NCAA Tournament berth and set a school record for wins in a season. Included in the 24 wins were a school-record 14 consecutive victories to open the season. His Hurricanes were not ranked in the preseason, but were ranked for the final 13 weeks of the season. Miami ended the year ranked No. 21 by the Associated Press. Success has also followed Clark’s players, particularly in the early stages of their careers. In his stints at Georgia Tech and Tulane, Clark went a phenomenal eight for nine, from 1983 to 1992, in helping produce the conference’s top rookie, including a Metro record three in a row at Tulane. As the recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech, five players earned

At Tulane, Anthony Reed (1990), Kim Lewis (1991) and Pointer Williams (1992) claimed consecutive Metro Conference Freshman of the Year honors. Clark also has coached 17 players who were drafted or have gone on to play in the NBA. Twelve of those draftees have gone in the first or second rounds, including 2002 selection John Salmons, who taken with the 26th pick of the first round by the San Antonio Spurs, and James Jones, who was a second-round selection by the Indiana Pacers in the 2003 NBA Draft. Other NBA draftees include Anthony Reed and Jerald Honeycutt at Tulane, Frank Brickowski from Penn State, and Dalrymple, Ferrell, Hammonds, Yvon Joseph, Craig Neal, Brian Oliver, Price, John Salley, and Scott from Tech. Kim Lewis Assistant Coach First Season Tulane (1994) A key member of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Perry Clark’s teams at Tulane, Kim Lewis, is in his first season on the Islander coaching staff. The former leader of the “Posse,” Lewis joins the Island University after spending the past two seasons with the Green Wave under then head coach Dave Dickerson. It was his second stint with the Green Wave, having served as an assistant for three seasons (199698) under Clark after completing his collegiate career. During his collegiate career, Lewis played an integral role in helping build a program that had been dormant from 1985-86 until Clark resurrected the program in 1988-89. Lewis, who helped Tulane to 78 victories in four seasons, is the career leader in steals and games played. He was 11th all-time in scoring entering the 2009-10 season and ranks among the all-time leaders in three pointers made, three pointers attempted, threepoint percentages, free throws made and free throws attempted. He was named the Tulane T-Club Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. Following his collegiate career, Lewis was selected in the seventh round of the CBA draft in 1995 by Sioux Falls with the 92nd pick and from 1998-2001 played in the Icelandic Basketball League. During that time he was named the league MVP and best all-around player, while leading his team to the league title. He doubled as the head coach his first season. Upon finishing his playing career, Lewis re-entered coaching as an assistant at Xavier University in New Orleans. After one season, Lewis got his first taste of the Southland Conference when he accepted a position at McNeese State under Tic Price. After the 2002-03 season, Lewis followed another Clark protégé, joining Ron Everhart at Northeastern and later followed him to Duquesne. In 2007-08, he spent one season at Centenary before heading back to Tulane. A native of Angie, La., Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in media arts/communications from Tulane in 1994.

Mark Dannhoff Assistant Coach First Season Wisconsin-La Crosse (1991) Mark Dannhoff begins his first year on the staff of Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. The 2010-11 season will be Dannhoff’s 20th year as a college coach, having most recently worked in the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Texas – Pan American in 2008-09. The native of La Crosse, Wis., brings his defensive expertise to help elevate the Islanders to the top of the Southland after finishing third in scoring defense a season ago. In all, he has been an assistant coach on nine collegiate coaching staffs and a head coach at Northland Community College for five seasons. He was also the interim head coach at Texas – Pan American during his stint with the Broncs. Dannhoff started his career as an assistant at his alma mater, Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he coached for two seasons after receiving his bachelor’s degree. While on the coaching staff, Dannhoff earned his master’s degree in education with an emphasis on physical education and athletic administration. He then moved on to be the head coach at Northland Community College in Minnesota in 1992. Under Dannhoff, the team win total improved every season, including during the 1995-96 season when his team won the Northern Division Championship and garnered an MCCC Regional Tournament invitation. Dannhoff spent one season each at Arkansas Tech and Arkansas – Little Rock before moving to Centenary College for a year, and then a single season at New Orleans where the team improved its record by eight wins. Following his stint with the Privateers, Dannhoff spent four seasons at Tulane as an assistant coach and also served as the coordinator of scouting and camps. He followed his time at Tulane with two seasons at Georgia State and a year at Mercer. From Mercer, he moved to UTPA where he spent the 2008-09 season on the Broncs coaching staff. Dannhoff then took a year off from the college game and returned home where he helped coach an AAU team in Wisconsin. In addition to coaching responsibilities, Dannhoff will be a key contributor to the Islanders scouting, recruiting and game preparation efforts.

The Southland Conference In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 47 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock, Ark., metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches,
Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has already broadcast nearly 70 events. In just its second year of production, the network has already received recognition for its work. It received a College Sports Media Award at the College Sports Video Summit in Atlanta in June 2010 for it production of the 2009 McNeese State vs. Stephen F. Austin football game, which was judged the best live game or event in its category. The network also collected three prestigious Tell Awards. Entering its third season in 2010-11, the network will expand its reach to roughly 6 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A record 934 student-athletes appeared on the honor roll following the 2010 spring semester. In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.

Athletic Director Tim Fitzpatrick Tim Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic department on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, after spending four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana University athletic department. Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic director at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, department website and publications. During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21 million contract with Adidas and worked extensively with Learfield Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9 million in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help generate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in excess of budgeted projections, a 15-percent improvement. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPNAM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000. Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA
football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.
