Texas A&M-Corpus Christi The 2010 season for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team looks to be a big year as the Islanders bring in several junior college AllAmericans to go along with returning players that won a school-record 12 Southland Conference Games. Head coach Jake Schumann has improved his team in each of his two seasons at the school and looks to continue the process of building a championship contender not only in the Southland, but on the national scene as well. With a tough early-season schedule, the Islanders should be well tested when they start conference play. They begin the year at the Hawaii Paradise Classic against No. 10 Stanford, Hawaii and Southland-rival McNeese State. Following the early road trip, the Islanders return home for two straight weekends when they host the Islander Classic: Presented by Holiday Inn Emerald Beach and the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Invitational. In the Islander Classic, TAMUCC plays host to Centenary, Boston College

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi... ...Athletic director Tim Fitzpatrick Timothy Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic department on Wednesday, Aug. 19 after spending the past four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana University athletic department. He fills the position that had been vacated since 2008. Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic director at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, department website, and publications. During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21,000,000 contract with Adidas and worked extensively with Learfield Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9,000,000 in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help generate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in excess of budgeted projections, a 15-percent improvement. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPN-AM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000. Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He
was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin versity of

Former UT Arlington shortstop, Trey Hillman, a threetime All-Southland selection from 198385, was named the manager for the Kansas City Royals following the 2007 season and coached the American League in the MLB All-Star Game this past July. Softball continues to enjoy success on a national level, as the league has knocked off at least one nationally ranked
1995, including a win by McNeese State over 19th-ranked LSU in 2009. In the 2003 NCAA Tournament, UT Arlington and Texas State enjoyed unprecedented success as each won two games in the national event. The Southland has a proud history in volleyball as UT Arlington has represented the conference eight times in the NCAA tournament, advancing all the way to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four in 1989. In 2006, Stephen F. Austin moved to the second round following an opening-round win against Alabama. Track and field has also served as a proud asset for the Southland Conference as the league has produced numerous national champions and Olympic medalists. The Southland boasts 27 men and three women student-athletes who have won NCAA track and field national championships, including A&M-Corpus Christi’s Shadrack Songok (10,000-meter run) in 2007 and 2008 and McNeese State’s Brad Gebauer (pole vault) in 2007. The league has also produced U.S. Olympic track and field medalists Earl Bell, Thomas Hill, Al Joyner and Charles Austin, Liudmila Litvinova, along with other Olympians. Golf has traditionally been a strong Southland sport as exemplified by Lamar men’s golfer Chris Stroud, who finished third individually at the 2003 NCAA National Championship and is a current member of the PGA Tour.
