TEXAS A&M MARITIME ACADEMY

The Galveston Campus is home to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, one of seven in the U.S. and the only academy integrated into a Tier 1 academic institution, which trains over 400 cadets annually for maritime service and employment around the world. The academy is ideally located in Galveston, Texas on the Gulf Coast where is it surrounded by the industry, environment and programs essential to fulfilling its special-purpose mission. SEA LIFE FACILITY

The Sea Life Facility (SLF) provides an experimental research laboratory infrastructure for campus scientists and students to conduct in vivo studies of marine life. Through collaborations with the Department of Marine Biology and volunteer opportunities, the SLF enables undergraduate students to receive hands-on training for mariculture systems and practices. The SLF Outreach Center aims to engage the campus community and general public, via educational displays and guided tours, to learn about research conducted in the SLF and marine life in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. www.tamug.edu/sealife SEA CAMP & SEA CAMPUS KIDS Sea Camp is a week-long residential adventure exploring the wonders of the marine and estuarine environments for campers ages 10-18. FOUNDATIONAL SCIENCES

The department strives to be a community of engaged faculty who offer academically excellent and pedagogically innovative classes in mathematics, chemistry, physics and statistics. The department also advises for and facilitates minors supporting the University Studies - Oceans and One Health degree, along with offering coursework for minors in Mathematics and Chemistry, through their respective departments at Texas A&M University. The department also facilitates the Secondary Education minor.

B.S. IN UNIVERSITY STUDIES, OCEANS & ONE HEALTH CONCENTRATION

Oceans and One Health is an interdisciplinary concentration that allows the student to explore the intersection between human, animal, and environmental health specific to the coastal environment. This degree program is intended for students who wish to pursue medical, dental, veterinary, or health-professional degrees or those interested in health issues in urbanized coastal communities. Through a partnership with the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston our Oceans and One Health students who apply and are admitted to UTMB after completing 95 hours at Texas A&M University at Galveston have the option to obtain a minor in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, which includes the first semester coursework for the masters degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences at UTMB.

The department’s mission is to provide a robust intellectual foundation for students pursuing occupational and leadership roles in areas such as government, communication, business, nongovernmental organizations, public policy, tourism policy, journalism and public relations, archaeology and anthropology, museums and archives, professional diving, and preparation for graduate studies and law school. Students also participate in a variety of state and national programs such as the Model United Nations, Student Conference on National Affairs, and the Bush School Public Service Institute.

Maritime Studies offers students a unique opportunity to examine the varied ways humans use and impact coastal and maritime environments. The program is well suited for students seeking to understand the vital and synergistic relationship humans have with the sea.

A degree that focuses on business law, admiralty law and environmental law, as well as environmental ethics and politics of energy and the environment, this program is ideal for students interested in entering professional programs in law and public policy.

MARINE BIOLOGY

The Department of Marine Biology offers students extensive opportunities for laboratory and field education and research at national and international locations with professors at the top of their fields. With a state-of-the art Sea Life Facility available for additional hands-on experiences with marine organisms and our location on the Gulf of Mexico, students are provided the perfect setting to gain the knowledge needed to be successful in a wide array of careers.

B.S. IN MARINE BIOLOGY

This degree’s curriculum spans a broad range of topics, including ichthyology and fish physiology, marine mammalogy, ecology, marine botany and coastal plant ecology, vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, and marine conservation. This diversity allows each student to tailor their education to meet their career goals. LICENSE OPTION DEGREE AVAILABLE The Marine Biology License Option program offers an abbreviated version of the marine biology degree curriculum and is oriented toward field activities consistent with service aboard research vessels. Students who enroll and pass their licensing examinations will be licensed as a Third Mate of any gross tonnage upon oceans, steam, or motor vessels, in the U.S. Merchant Marines.

B.S. IN MARINE FISHERIES

This program provides educational opportunities in the biological sciences, with emphasis on population dynamics and marine fisheries. Ecology, taxonomy, zoogeography, culture, and general biology of commercial species are emphasized. Marine fisheries graduates are prepared to work as fisheries managers or research biologists for state and federal agencies, ecological consulting firms, and educational institutions.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MARINE BIOLOGY

The Master of Science degree in Marine Biology has two degree options: thesis and non-thesis. The thesis-option Master’s degree focuses on independently supervised research resulting in an original thesis, complemented by formal coursework. The non-thesis option focuses on coursework and requires a professional paper. Essential components of the program include the following: • A diverse curriculum focusing on ecology and evolution of marine organisms and

POSSIBILITIES The animals Dr. Maria Pia Miglietta studies might not have hearts or brains, but she has plenty of both. The jellyfish scientist is an integral part of Texas A&M University at Galveston’s Department of Marine Biology and was recently promoted to associate professor with tenure. Originally from southern Italy, “the heel of the boot,” as she refers to it, Miglietta always found herself drawn to the nearby Mediterranean Sea and the fascinating world of jellyfish. “I have never left the world of jellies,” she says, detailing her academic career, “And I don’t think I’ll want to!” @AggiesByTheSea

Her research has taken her from South Africa to Iceland and Japan, diving all over the world in the name of jellyfish research regarding genetics and genomics. “I study a group of Cnidaria, and to understand their evolution I have collected species in those places. It’s often been challenging but crucial and really changed my life. Once I got here, I knew the U.S. was the place I could succeed in my work and I love it,” she said. The jelly group Miglietta is referring to is the hydrozoans. One specific species is the Turritopsis dohrnii, the jellyfish that “lives forever” by reverting back to a polyp during the end stage of its life cycle instead of dying. In her lab on campus, Miglietta and marine biology

students study the evolution, genetics and ecology of the “immortal jellyfish.” Since starting at Texas A&MGalveston in 2014, she has established the Miglietta Lab and furthered her fascinating strain of research.

GULF CENTER FOR SEA TURTLE RESEARCH The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research (GCSTR) located on the campus of Texas A&M University at Galveston is dedicated to the research and conservation of the endangered sea turtle species endemic to the Gulf of Mexico, including the criticallyendangered Kemp’s ridley. Department of Marine Biology Professor Dr. Christopher Marshall serves as the facility’s director. Opened in December of 2020, over 100 ill or injured sea turtle patients have already passed through the doors of the GCSTR, which has facilitated numerous releases of healthy patients back into their natural Gulf of Mexico habitat.

temperature control capabilities to keep the cold-blooded reptiles warm. Veterinary staff from the Houston Zoo aid in rehabilitation efforts and other various medical needs. In addition to rehabilitation efforts, the center helps run the local sea turtle stranding network and nesting-season turtle patrols. Due to the closing of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries longtime Galveston Laboratory sea turtle facility, the GCSTR has taken the lead for responding to stranded sea turtles on the upper Texas coast. MARINE & COASTAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE The department educates students to be future leaders in coastal and marine science as well as management and policy-creation for the utilization and preservation of marine resources. Today’s professional careers demand strong interdisciplinary as well as interpersonal skills and have designed our educational programs to provide a core education in the physical, chemical and geological sciences.

B.S. IN COASTAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & SOCIETY

This program focuses on natural environmental processes and social issues related to the development and exploitation of oceanic and coastal resources and ecosystems. Classes provide a solid foundation in oceanography, geology, chemistry, biology and physics with additional coursework in economics, policy and management. Students will also gain an understanding of the societal and environmental impacts of resource development and exploitation, with a focus on environmental pollution, sustainable development, biological diversity, fisheries and mariculture development and management, or oil and gas extraction and exploration, wetlands, and global climate change. 5-Year program available

B.S. IN MARINE SCIENCES

with Master of Marine Resources Management

This degree focuses on the geological, chemical and physical science aspects of the estuarine, coastal, and marine environment. The coastal location of the campus enables students to acquire extensive hands-on field experience in addition to rigorous course work in chemistry, geology, physics, biology, oceanography and mathematics. All students take oceanography with labs and a course in geographic information systems (GIS). During the senior year students will participate in research with faculty members culminating in a poster presentation of their research. LICENSE OPTION DEGREE AVAILABLE This program provides students with a background to function in a scientifically and technologically advanced society, while also providing the practical hands-on training needed for employment in the maritime industry. MASTER OF MARINE RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

The Master of Marine Resources Management program offers both professional (non-thesis) and research (thesis) tracks. Courses focused on quantitative and research methods, geographic information systems (GIS), environmental and natural resource policy, and management and planning constitute the core of the program. The program is designed for both continuing students and professionals who have a desire to engage in the management of coastal and ocean resources as part of their career goals. All Master of Marine Resources Management students have the ability to earn a GIS certificate through elective coursework.

PH.D. IN MARINE & COASTAL MANAGEMENT & SCIENCE

The Ph.D program in Marine & Coastal Management Sciences is an interdisciplinary program that is firmly grounded in both the social and physical sciences. The program encompasses the impacts and opportunities from the built environment and development, rigorous training in research methods and analytical procedures, and interdisciplinary approaches to research and learning—with a focus on coastal and marine near-shore environments, where problems at the MINOR interface of the natural and built-environment are most pronounced.

ENGINEERING

The Department of Engineering at Texas A&M University is a two-campus department that offers three degree programs on the Galveston Campus. These programs focus on engineering for marine environments and between the two locations offers students access to the most comprehensive laboratory testing facilities in the nation.

INTERDISCIPLINARY ENGINEERING

Interdisciplinary Engineering is a specialized degree track that focuses on engineering in marine environments - from the shore to the ocean floor. This program provides students an understanding of the geohazards present in and around the ocean through courses in ocean engineering, project management and safety engineering. Graduates are well prepared to become an electro-technology officer, which will eventually be required on each sailing vessel.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Multidisciplinary Engineering Technology prepares graduates for immediate impact and long-term career success by providing real-world experiential education coupled with personalized undergraduate experiences in mechanical, electronic, control, computer and communication systems, as well as engineering design and development. The program provides hands-on laboratory experience using state-of-the-art equipment and industry-standard design and analysis software. The degree is flexible and gives graduates a strong background in electronic and mechanical systems.

OCEAN ENGINEERING

Ocean engineering combines civil, mechanical and electrical engineering with naval architecture and applied oceanography. Students learn to design and work with systems that must operate in the ocean, such as offshore oil rigs, subsea pipelines and seawalls. Employment opportunities exist with private industry, defense contractors, consulting firms, and government agencies. Graduates are prepared for entering engineering practice, continuing onto graduate study, life-long learning and professional development.

MARINE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

The department produces graduates who are prepared to perform engineering work in the maritime sector onboard a vessel or marine-related shore-based industries involving the design, production, operation, maintenance, and management of engineering and power generation systems and projects. The program is available in a License Option version for students who want to serve as an engineering officer aboard seagoing vessels and a Non-License Option for students who want to pursue maritimerelated applied engineering but do not plan to serve as an officer aboard a vessel.

B.S. IN MARINE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY, NON-LICENSE OPTION

The Marine Engineering Technology non-license option program is designed to prepare the student for a career as an engineering technologist in the maritime profession, but will not receive a U.S. Coast Guard License upon graduation. A thorough preparation in mathematics, science, and engineering courses is the foundation for further study in ship propulsion plants and electrical power generation and distribution equipment. Students will focus on power cycles, principles, and methods used to convert various forms of energy into useful power. The curriculum explores the selection and operation of the major components and support systems in the power cycle, along with studies in automation and control systems, naval architecture and the maritime application of electrical engineering fundamentals. LICENSE OPTION DEGREE AVAILABLE The purpose of the Marine Engineering Technology License Option program is to train students to serve as engineering officers aboard sea-going vessels. In addition to a degree in marine engineering technology, License Option cadets who successfully complete the program will be qualified to sit for the U. S. Coast Guard license examination as a Third Assistant Engineer of any gross tonnage upon oceans, steam and motor vessels and issuance of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) international endorsement as Officer-In-Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW). An unlimited tonnage gas turbine endorsement is also available.

NEW PROJECT TO FOCUS ON

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES A Texas A&M at Galveston Project from the Marine Engineering Technology Department will show students how to build solar panels and wind turbines

Teaching students about the importance of alternative energy sources and then instructing them on how to build devices like solar panels and wind turbines is the focus of a $60,000 grant awarded to two Texas A&M University at Galveston researchers. Irfan Khan, instructional assistant professor in the Department of Marine Engineering Technology, and Jenna Lamphere, assistant professor of sociology, @AggiesByTheSea

have received Texas A&M’s Presidential Transformational Teaching Grant for the project. It will be administered through the CARES (Clean And Resilient Energy Systems) lab in the Marine Engineering Technology Department. “We will purchase a solar/wind energy training system that will demonstrate how wind turbines and solar cells are being used in the consumer and industrial markets to supplement the world’s power needs,” Khan said. The program explores sunlight and wind as energy sources that can be used to help reduce dependence on non-renewable fuel sources, he said. Students will gain “a complete perspective” of the field by studying the economics, efficiency, and

low environmental impact of producing energy from nonpolluting, renewable sources. “All of these training systems are made from real-world components that are used in industry, the same that students see in their homes, schools, and workplaces, but their size is bit smaller than the industrial ones, specifically developed for laboratory and training purposes,” Khan said. WAVES OF

CHANGE Every day, Daisey McCloud meets students at crossroads in their lives. As Texas A&M University at Galveston’s director of counseling services since 2009, she regularly draws from her experiences as a firstgeneration student to offer guidance. “When students come to campus, people assume that they know things from their parents’ experiences,” she said, “but many students don’t even know what questions to ask.” And despite social advancements since McCloud first attended college, many students still report struggling with race and identity issues. Academically and financially struggling students that are part of an underrepresented group can feel especially isolated, compounding their alienation

further and dragging down their well-being and success. “They can feel like they don’t matter—like they’re not even in the room,” McCloud said. In looking for ways to further support these Aggies, McCloud discovered the Foundation Excellence Award (FEA) scholarship program, a longrunning initiative at Texas A&M University’s College Station campus that recently expanded to support Aggies studying at the Galveston Campus as well. These unique scholarships provide students a four-year stipend during their college experience to offset the cost of tuition and typically support underrepresented groups, including minorities and students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

The department seeks to combine studies in the humanities and sciences with instruction and training in maritime disciplines to provide Texas A&M Maritime Academy License Option cadets with a broadbased education. The student who successfully completes the license program will be qualified to sit for the U.S. Coast Guard license examination as a Third Mate of any gross tonnage upon oceans, steam, or motor vessels and issuance of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) credentials. Cadets are also provided with solid fundamentals in business topics related to the maritime industry, ashore and afloat.

B.S. IN MARINE TRANSPORTATION

In addition, all STCW proficiencies must be satisfactorily completed with a grade of 70% or better.

LICENSE OPTION

Prepare for a commercial shipping career as professional mariners in the U.S. Merchant Marines. Graduate with either a Third Mate’s (Oceans Unlimited) or Third Assistant Engineer’s (Steam and/or Motor Vessels, Unlimited) license. The Naval Reserve Officer Training (NROTC) is for those cadets who would like to become a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy. Cadets participate in training and coursework administered by Navy personnel stationed on-campus.

The Texas A&M Maritime Academy on the Galveston Campus of Texas A&M University has received notification from the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) that the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) expected to arrive on campus in 2025 will be named the Lone Star State. The ship is the fourth in a new class series of vessels specifically designed to support both maritime training needs and disaster response capabilities. “The Galveston Campus is fulfilling critical components of Texas A&M University’s sea-grant mission and is perfectly


positioned both strategically and geographically to provide the instruction and training necessary for the state to foster growth of the blue economy in the Gulf Coast region,” said Dr. John L. Junkins, interim president of Texas A&M University in College Station. “It is only fitting that one of our most visible assets prominently feature our state motto.” Congress approved $325 million in funding to construct the NSMV in December 2020. The 524-foot stateof-the-art ship represents a significant investment by the federal government in supporting the future of the maritime industry and future merchant mariners in Texas. The NSMVs are designated as State-class vessels and each are named for the state in which a state maritime academy operates. “The naming of the NSMV reinforces Texas’ strong commitment to the U.S. Merchant Marine and maritime industry and we are proud to be able to represent that commitment with the aptly named Lone Star State. We are grateful to both the state and MARAD for their support in training the future merchant mariners of Texas and this nation,” said Col. Michael E. Fossum, superintendent of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy and chief operating officer of the Galveston Campus. The NSMV series replaces the aging fleet of training ships currently in use by the six state maritime academies in the United States. The vessels are equipped with numerous training spaces that can support up to 600 cadets at sea and also include critical disaster response capabilities in the Gulf of Mexico. “The Texas A&M University System is vested in supporting the state as we lead efforts to transform disaster response and relief nationwide,” said John Sharp, chancellor of the Texas A&M System. “Federal and state support in securing the Lone Star State as an asset ensures rapid response capabilities in our own backyard, which happens to also be the most hurricane-prone region in the United States.” Each year over 300 Texas A&M Maritime Academy cadets live, work, learn and train alongside one another during a two-month summer sea term that provides hands-on atsea training and instruction. Cadets currently train aboard Massachusetts State Maritime Academy’s training ship, Kennedy, through a ship-sharing agreement with MARAD established in 2018. The Kennedy is expected to transfer to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy in 2023 to serve in place of the Lone Star State until its arrival in 2025. The academy’s previous training vessel, Texas Clipper II, was reassigned in 2005 by the federal government after serving in disaster response efforts for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The General Rudder, a 224-foot training vessel with a maximum capacity of 50 cadets, is currently docked at campus and provides supplemental training year-round. State academy training vessels are federally owned and available to support federal response efforts to national and international disasters. The Lone Star State is the fourth in a series of five NSMVs. The first three were assigned to the State University of New York Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Maine Maritime Academy.
