BMX track now fully open The brand new BMX play track is now officially open – and is already attracting BMXers from Tamworth and further afield. Work on the £50,000 BMX play track, at the back of Deltic in Glascote, started in March and took just five weeks to complete. It was officially opened on May 5 and is already being very well used.

The aim of the track is to encourage young people to take part in the sport of BMX, improving their skills and encourage families to enjoy the open space, which is open and available to everyone.

Cllr Pritchard, said: “A lot of hard work has gone into getting the project off the ground, especially from the residents association and Tamworth BMX Club, so it is wonderful to at last see the track open and being used.

The BMX track was paid for by £47,300 of Big Lottery funding from Groundwork UK and £3,500 from Staffordshire County Council, following an application from Belgrave Residents Association, assisted by Cllr Rob Pritchard.

A community day in April saw local volunteers carry out environmental works on the open space around the track, including the planting of 600 daffodil bulbs, 200 trees and bushes and the planting of an oak sapling grown from an acorn taken from one of the Royal estates, as well as the installation of a number of bird boxes.

“BMXing is getting more and more popular. To see Tamworth supporting this activity and getting more young people involved in the sport is brilliant news. Hopefully we will discover some stars of the future while encouraging people to get involved in the sport.”

Tamworth Borough Council also helped and supported the group throughout the project, including overseeing the construction.

News in brief Visitor numbers soar at the TIC Visitor numbers have soared at Tamworth’s Tourist Information Centre since it moved to bigger and better premises in the Philip Dix Centre a year ago. 36,000 people have bought tickets or souvenirs - an increase of 13% - in the last 12 months, while in total more than 140,000 people have visited the TIC. With longer opening hours, staff can provide more help and advice. There is also more space to showcase the town, local food produce is on sale and heritage groups can display information about their work and historic Tamworth. The TIC is currently decked out in red, white and blue as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee approaches and Olympic merchandise is on sale ahead of the Olympic Torch arrival in Tamworth at the end of June.

Tamworth bids for ‘queen of shops’ funding Tamworth is bidding for a slice of £1 million of government funding to help improve and rejuvenate high streets. Last year, shopping and business guru Mary Portas carried out an in-depth review of Britain's high streets for the Government and as a result, this funding has been made available. The Portas Pilot will see 12 towns across the UK receive £100,000 to help boost and improve their town centres – and Tamworth is one of those which has applied. Tamworth’s town team - ‘Destination Tamworth’ - made up of retailers and businesses across the borough - were responsible for putting the bid together, along with Tamworth Borough Council. If the bid is successful, the money could help boost town centre trade and breathe new life into the town centre. A video supporting the application can be found on the council’s website at www.tamworth.gov.uk

Corporate Plan 2012/13 “One Tamworth, Perfectly Placed” The Corporate Plan for 2012/13 shows how, by working with partners, we will continue to work towards the single vision for the borough of ‘One Tamworth, Perfectly Placed’. The focus remains concentrated on the two priorities; to aspire and prosper in Tamworth and to be healthier and safer in Tamworth. Projects for this year include: • The Olympic Torch relay visit and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, • Delivering the housing capital programme to further improve council housing, • The anti-dog fouling campaigns in hot-spot locations, The plan also recounts some achievements of the previous year including; • Major retailers such as John Lewis at Home, B&Q, Maplins and Next Home opening stores in the town, • The Staffordshire Hoard display at the Castle and Saxon Summer Festival, • The joint recycling team being named local authority team of the year at the National Recycling Awards, See our website at www.tamworth.gov.uk www.tamworth.gov.uk

Not too late to get free home insulation Residents who have not yet taken advantage of an energy saving scheme which is installing free loft and cavity wall insulation measures in homes across Tamworth are being urged to sign up before the end of the month. The free loft and cavity wall insulation is being made available by Tamworth Borough Council to every home in Tamworth through the HEAT scheme. Since the free insulation scheme was launched in June last year, it has been responsible for the installation of more than 2,000 loft and cavity wall insulation measures. The free insulation offer is open to every resident in Tamworth – whether they own or rent their property. Everyone can benefit from the free insulation offer, regardless of age or income, and applicants do not need to be in receipt of benefits. Anyone who would like to take advantage of the free insulation offer should call the council’s HEAT freephone line on 0800 043 2815. Work must be booked in by June 30 to take advantage of the free offer, although it can be carried out after this date.

Saxon Hound leads antidog fouling campaign Saxon Hound and Mucky Pup are at the forefront of a new campaign to educate dog owners to clean up after their pets. The cartoon characters are the canine ‘faces’ of the Mucky Pup – Clean It Up campaign which aims to tackle dog fouling in Tamworth through raising awareness, education and targeting those dog owners who allow their pets to foul. The campaign also encourages members of the public to play their part in the fight against dog fouling by reporting it to the council.

The hotspots are blitzed in an intensive three-week campaign, to record and remove dog mess, while at the same time talking to dog owners and members of the public about how they can play their part in the war on dog fouling.

Mucky Pup – Clean It Up targets dog fouling hotspots which have been identified by the street wardens or through members of the public reporting them.

Spot checks and unannounced patrols will also continue after the end of the campaign in the hotspot areas, to ensure the clean-up message continues to be enforced.

Owners spotted not cleaning up after their dogs will be given a fixed penalty notice.

Street wardens and Saxon Hound launch the Mucky Pup - Clean It Up campaign

Saxon Hound and Mucky Pup are the faces of the campaign, featuring on signs and other material bearing the message Mucky Pup – Clean It Up. They will also be used to promote a wide range of other dogrelated messages and will feature on signs through the borough and on the regular patrol areas of the wardens. Any member of the public can report irresponsible dog owners at any time on the new Mucky Pup hotline 01827 709427, via email muckypup@tamworth.gov.uk or text MUCKYPUP and message to 88020.

The Olympic Flame is coming Join us and line the streets

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Tamworth for a once-in-alifetime chance to see the Olympic Torch as it passes through the town.

On Saturday June 30, the eyes of the world will be on Tamworth as it plays host to the Olympic Torch on its journey between Derby and Birmingham. Tamworth’s leg of the relay starts at approximately 10am. The Torch will be carried by a number of speciallyselected bearers down Lichfield Road, onto Lichfield Street, Silver Street and then into the Castle Grounds.

Tamworth residents are being encouraged to turn out and line the streets to celebrate this historic moment. There will be viewing points along the route where people can get the best view of the Torch. Councillor Rob Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Torch and we are delighted that it is coming to Tamworth.

“This, coupled with the Olympic Festival taking place in the Castle Grounds, means it will be a day to remember for everyone living and visiting Tamworth on June 30.” Cllr Pritchard also encouraged all homes and businesses on the route to decorate their homes and get involved in the day. People planning their own event should log on to www.london2012.com/getinvolved/local-leaders/ to get a range of ideas and help.

Countdown to Olympic Torch relay Choirs, hundreds of school children and community and sporting groups from across the borough will be out in force to celebrate the Olympic Torch arriving in Tamworth. A huge Olympic Festival is taking place on Saturday June 30, to celebrate both the iconic Torch’s arrival and the London 2012 Olympics. The Castle Grounds is playing host to a Diamond Jubilee celebration from 12noon to 3pm on Saturday June 2, with Royal festivities including live music from the Central England Brass Band, face painting, walkabout characters and loads more fun for the whole family. Entry to the event is free and families are invited to bring along a picnic and make a day of it. Jubilee events are also taking place

in Belgrave, Glascote, Amington and Stonydelph. They are being planned by local groups working with the Community Development Officers and will offer loads of fun for all the family. Activities during the Jubilee celebrations will include Royalthemed games and competitions, face painting and refreshments – all in a street party atmosphere, decked out with bunting and Union Flags.

The celebrations are being held on Thursday May 31 in Belgrave, Friday June 1 in Glascote, Saturday June 2 in Amington and Tuesday June 5 in Stonydelph. For more information, contact our Community Development team on 01827 709310.

Community turns out for planting day Volunteers of all ages dug deep for a community planting project in Glascote Heath. Around 25 people, ranging from youngsters to pensioners, picked up their spades, rakes and hoes to replant the flower beds between Ivatt and Maitland.

!

Groups from the Living Rock Church, Glascote Heath, Oakhill and Two Rivers Schools played their part in the tidy-up by digging over the beds and starting some of the planting. Volunteers from St Peter’s Church, Glascote Youth Centre and the Volunteer Centre Tamworth took part in the planting, as well as a number of Glascote Heath residents, helped by staff from Tamworth Borough Council’s estates caretaking team, street wardens and tenant involvement. They filled the beds with plants including lavender, rosemary, wallflowers, bluebells and daffodils. The ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the flower beds will now be taken over by a group of residents and local organisations. 8

Glascote Heath Community Development Officer, Stuart Etheridge, said: “It was tremendous to see so many people of all ages turn up to lend a hand. It was hard work, but everyone was eager to get on with the work and we were spurred on by the positive comments from passers-by. “Now it’s all planted, I hope this will encourage people to help look after it. It’s been a fantastic project and I think everyone who got involved should be very proud of what has been achieved.” The planting project forms part of the ongoing Big Glascote Heath Tidy-Up, which has been cleaning up and improving Glascote Heath for the past year. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help with the upkeep of the flower beds or adopt a bed should contact Stuart Etheridge on stuartetheridge@tamworth.gov.uk or ring Glascote ARCH on 01827 254933. www.tamworth.gov.uk

Help us to go for gold In Bloom hat-trick We’re calling on everyone in the borough to get involved in this year’s Tamworth In Bloom campaign – especially those living along the judging route. This year, Tamworth is going all out in an attempt to win the gold award for the third year running, as well as pulling out all the stops to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The theme of this year’s campaign is Red, White & Bloom, and organisers are calling on the people of Tamworth to do their bit to make sure that Tamworth is a riot of red, white and blue when the judges make their tour on Tuesday July 10. Whether it’s going all out with a floral extravaganza in red, white and blue, putting up a hanging basket or just flying a Union flag, Tamworth In Bloom organisers are hoping that every single house, street, school, pub or business along the route will be getting into the Red, White & Bloom spirit. And now, it’s even easier to get involved and help to make the borough bloom, with Red, White &

I am hoping that everyone in Tamworth will get behind this year’s Red, White & Bloom campaign, especially those along the route. “However you decide to get involved, Red, White & Bloom is about more than just the flowers. Tamworth hosts unique arts project One of the biggest community arts projects ever to be staged in Tamworth opens at Tamworth Assembly Rooms next week. The Wall is a contemporary re-imagining of the Pink Floyd rock opus. It is being staged at Tamworth Assembly Rooms on June 6, 7 and 8 by Arts Connects and Fired Up Theatre, by kind permission of Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Mark Fenwick Management. Using Pink Floyd’s classic music, with a new narrative brought bang up to date by Simon Quinn, The Wall is set on a fictitious housing estate somewhere in the West Midlands and explores contemporary themes including anti-social behaviour, poverty, unemployment, social deprivation, peer pressure and racism. The project brings together and involves people from all ages and communities across Tamworth, including groups of people who would not normally work together. People from all across Tamworth with skills including acting, mime, storytelling, dance, poetry, rapping, graffiti art, puppetry, music, stage fighting, film, projection, costumes, set design and props have been hard at work to put the production together. They will be joined by top professional Pink Floyd tribute band Floydian Slip who will be performing throughout the production. Tickets for The Wall are still available from the Tourist Information Centre in Corporation Street or by calling the box office on 01827 709618.

Thousands celebrate St George’s Day The weather might not have been the best, but that didn’t stop thousands of people from packing into the Castle Grounds for the St George’s Day extravaganza.

More than 6,000 people joined in the free St George’s Day celebrations, which featured the hugely popular medieval joust, as well as falconry, archery, medieval encampment displays, walkabout characters, children’s workshops, street magic and face painting.

Exciting plans for the Assembly Rooms? Ambitious plans to improve and develop Tamworth Assembly Rooms are in the pipeline. The project to improve the Assembly Rooms – which were built in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee – is at an early stage and is subject to external funding being in place to allow it to go ahead. Tamworth Borough Council, in conjunction with Staffordshire County Council, is also looking at ways to create a ‘cultural quarter’ which would also include the library. Plans are at a very early stage and the work will be dependent on external funded. At this stage however, the council is working very closely with groups which use the Assembly Rooms, customers and the neighbouring Tamworth Library to get their views and feedback. Rob Mitchell, Director of Communities, Planning and Partnerships, said: “These are very exciting plans for the future. If we do get the go-ahead this development will help support the town centre, existing businesses and in turn, the local economy.” Rob Mitchell urged caution and said that there was still a lot of work to be done before the stage was reached where the Assembly Rooms would be developed further. talkback
