Tamworth and the Staffordshire Hoard Tamworth’s history dates back to the 6th century when settlers came to the area and together formed a powerful kingdom known as Mercia. Tamworth was the heartland of the Mercian Kingdom where the King’s main residence stood, the military capital of The Ancient Capital of Mercia. Today, Mercia continues to herald its importance with the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest discovery of Saxon gold ever. Found not far from the Capital of Mercia, and very close to the old Roman Road of Watling Street a few miles to the west of Tamworth, the hoard appears to date from around 590 A.D. to 750 A.D. The Hoard consists of 1800 pieces of gold and silver Anglo-Saxon artefacts, many inlaid with garnets and predominantly of military origin. The filigree detail and intricate designs are a wonder to behold. We may never know why it was buried or who it belonged to but it will hopefully in time unlock some of the secrets of the Saxon age, stories of the people and of Anglo-Saxon Tamworth. Coming soon is a Mercian Trail linking the military capital of Tamworth to the religious capital, Lichfield and Birmingham. Look out for planned events regarding our Saxon Heritage and future dates of where and when the Hoard can be viewed.
For more information on the Staffordshire Hoard and future events, please contact Stacy Birt, Tourism Officer on 01827 709583 or email stacy-birt@tamworth.gov.uk. Further details on Saxon Tamworth can be viewed on www.visittamworth.co.uk

Middleton Hall Middleton, Tamworth, Staffs, B78 2AE Middleton Hall shows evidence of several phases of English domestic architecture from the late 13th century to the 19th century, including a fine Great Tudor Hall. The Hall was home to some notable people and was visited by many figures from history, these include Queen Elizabeth I who spent two nights here after the festivities at Kenilworth in 1575. The Hall is more importantly recognised as a special place in the history of British science. The John Ray room celebrates the life of one of our first naturalists in the 17th Century, the first ever scientific book on ornithology was written here and the first substantial catalogue of British plants compiled. The hall also houses the Peel Collection and Police Museum. The grounds are superb with a nine acre lake and a noted walled garden. There is a Craft Centre adjacent to the Hall and more recently an RSPB nature reserve will open to the public in 2011. There is a lovely tea room, toilet facilities, souvenir and book shop and ample parking. There are no minimum numbers required but essential that tours are booked in advance. The tour and visit will last approximately two to three hours, £5.00 pp There is an additional charge for refreshments in the café. There is limited access for visitors with mobility issues within the buildings and the outdoor paving areas vary from grass to paving. To book this tour please contact Stacy Birt. Tamworth Town Hall Market Street, Tamworth, Staffs B79 7LU Built in 1701 and funded by Thomas Guy, (more famously known for building Guy’s Hospital in London), the hall dominates Market Street in the town centre. The building has seen many alterations throughout the centuries, one being the enlargement of the upper rooms in 1811, part funded by Sir Robert Peel, founder of the modern Metropolitan Police Force and MP for Tamworth.
