DESIGN DISSERTATION PROJECT
USING WATER AS AN ELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE TO PROMOTE WELLBEING OF PEOPLE SEMESTER IX - X GUIDE : SMITA DALVI
ABSTRACT This dissertation attempts to foremost understand the healing powers of water. Throughout history, there is evidence of architecture celebrating the beauty of water. • Water has been a crucial element in communities and nature since the dawn of civilization, symbolizing continuance. Water used to be a need for survival, but as the world became more urbanized, its value expanded significantly. Water has long been a symbol of grandeur in some cultures, while in others it is simply a recreational element. The world’s concept of architecture has shifted over time, and with it, new functions for water have emerged. • This study examines how the presence of water as a function or feature enhances architecture, as well as how this relationship is experienced by humans through their senses. This study looks at a variety of case studies to see how water is used in different locations and how it affects people’s senses. Finally, the goal of this research is to learn more about the importance of water in architecture so that we may learn more about the advantages of water on human health and develop effective strategies for using water resources in a sustainable, practical, and aesthetically pleasing way.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND WATER IMPACT OF WATER ON HUMAN SENSES
3 1 The stream valley developments thrived on the banks of waterways because of the accessibiliy of water for endurance
5
presently we additionally have submerged designs constructed and are in process to be inherent in whats to come
times when urban areas began to create, waterfronts came into the image
2
VISION
The multi-tangible degree of commitment with water permits individuals to contact, smell, taste, hear and see water. Thus water could assume a significant part in design by making a climate where every one of the faculties is practiced in balance, it can permit an individual’s brain and body to open up to a mending experience. It can likewise add meaning or makes a spatial figment.
HEARING
NEED TO BRING BACK HEALING POWERS OF WATER ?
Later on a few s e t l e m e n t s prospered as islands over the ocean when water became one of the mode of transport
later on utilization of water bodies in design is seen through pools, wellsprings, cascades etc
4
The relationship between water and mankind entails not just an understanding of natural behavior but also our biological roots. The healing effects of water fixes have been known since ancient times when humankind realized the importance of water as a vital component of human existence and built the first civilizations near oceans and streams since the water was the most important aspect in mankind’s survival
6
The thought was to propose a design element that would aid in stimulating the senses of the users, hence water was proposed as such an element since water can summon the five primary faculties in people.
These five properties and the sensory effects of water on human senses , are the main reasons why water should be a part of peoples life. The water properties help people feel weightless, and this advantage can be used to help medical problems that are hampered by weight. The conclusion then is that, if water is utilized in architecture where people engage with it can contribute to a person’s sense of wellbeing by allowing boosting of senses.
SMELL
TASTE
If architecture can provide a place where the senses are exercised in balance, it can allow a person’s mind and body to open up to a healing experience. This thought has shaped the reason for this design dissertation project.

BUILD
This study looks at how to strike the correct balance between water and architecture to assist society achieve a peaceful environment. We constantly need water, but as the world’s population grows, this resource is increasingly scarce. Learnings from historical and modern aqua architecture
Research insights are translated into cues for design development - relating water with nature of spaces.
Incorporating properties of water in the spaces designed
Stress and uneasiness could be diminished in the event that we live in a peaceful climate. This peacefulness can be gotten by utilizing water as a noticeable component in spaces where individuals could unwind partake in their recreation time. Hence the design project is defined as a “ A Recreational and Wellness Hub that revolves around the therapeutic values and recreational experiences of water and deriving means to incorporate water-based architecture into the specified urban context. The design shall be a modern adaptation of traditional architectural responses to water. “

SITE RESPONSES AND DESIGN STRATEGIES
Since its a 8m wide road and serves as the principle access road to the site, vehicular entry and exit are restricted to this road itself. To avoid clashes between pedestrians and vehicles, pedestrian entry and exit to the site can be made from the 5 M wide road. The orange line indicates the road which can also serve as a service road to the site, could also be used for parking.
10
Buildings should be spread out with large open spaces in between for unrestricted air movement. In cities, buildings on stilts can promote ventilation and cause cooling at ground level.
The warm and humid climate indicates that the structure should be oriented so that the long axes are in the east-west direction,i.e. the longest walls face north and south, and only the short wall face east and west.
Parking can be provided on the southern side , so that parking doesn’t block the better view points of the site.
Because the primary winds are from the south-west, this orientation will aid passive cooling.
Architecture Portfolio 2017-2022
To minimize the direct solar radiation from the sun passive sun shading devices can be used on south facade along with dense plantation of trees on the southern side of the site. This will help to reduce the radiation and will provide diffused sunlight to the spaces. Solar penetration is reduced by providing fins and louvers.
Architecture Portfolio 2017-2022
The Positive zone has the best views from the site , which are to the north and north-west, thus structures can be positioned accordingly.
Since there are a lot of trees on the site, the building form can merge with the surrounding trees creating courtyards and open spaces for cross ventilation.
The Negative zone on the site can be used for services and parking as it doesn’t have any good views for the users.
The existing water body on the site can act as a water courtyard which will help in evaporative cooling.
11
SITE PLAN The circulation was based on the idea of maximizing internal exposure to the surrounding greenery. Therefore, individual functional zones surround an existing pond which acts as internal water courtyard along with trees, allowing for each zone to be surrounded by the nature.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The concept of the site plan is inspired from linear city development, since the site is aligned along the sea. In oreder to avoid the disadvantage of the long roads which are observed in linear city development, different zones adjacant to the sea are interconnected in between. The placement of different blocks of modules is done in a staggered manner so that maximum modules enjoy the seaside view. Different colours of aluminium compostie panels have been used as cladding for differentiating and easy indentification of the typologies of modular blocks.
SITE CONTEXT AND ACCESSIBILITY This location is situated in Mumbai Port Trust , in Sewri , Mumbai. It lies in the midway on the West coast of India, on the natural deep water harbour of Mumbai in Maharashtra. The harbor spread over 400 square kilometers is protected by the mainland of Konkan to its east and north and by the island city of Mumbai to its west. WEEKEND HOUSE SEMESTER II
PROJECT TYPE : ACADEMIC SITE AREA : 900 Sq.m LOCATION : PANVEL , NAVI MUMBAI
The Project was about to design a weekend house for a role model , so the spaces are designed keeping in mind the various activities related to the user.
Here the user is a nutrition and exercise science expert who loves to live a fit and healthy lifestyle and does many things which help her do so.
Meditation is one those things which was a part of her everyday routine , hence a fountain was proposed as its peaceful , gentle trickling sound is a great destressor and promotes relaxation.
Getting inspired by the surrounding tree spreads. This is achieved by following the curves of the spread of the central tree which led to this radial geometry , so that the structure blends in the site.
Adding a fountain immediately adds beauty to the outdoor spaces , the calming sound of water trickling creates a relaxing ambiance.
Section BB’
The plan follows a radial geometry , which is inspired by the spread of central tree. There are two blocks separated by a wooden deck , which is covered with a pergola.

The lattice white steel frames lined in repetition along the space with its arched form and truss frame create a perception of vast space and gives a pleasing aesthetic appeal to the space. Truss frames between the lattice frames provide extra support and add a transitional effect in the space where they are placed in between the intersection of two gabled components of the exposition center. An exposition space should have enough lighting and white spaces to display or place the art object, so natural lighting in the form of skylights in the roof and light coming through the glass framed arches along the elevations were provided. Though the roof is gabled form outside, the arched lattice frame along the building give an illusion of varying heights thus amplifying its aesthetic and experiential space quality.
Gutters have been given along the roof for rainwater outlet. Alternate arched truss openings with glass frame along the north-south ALUMINIUM COMPOSITE PANELfacade provide natural lighting and air-circulation. These design considerations make the exposition Centre a WALL CLADDING very comfortable space and a memorable user-experience. TOUR DOCUMENTATIONS
West Elevation
These water sprouts pour water in the artificial concrete pond during the rains giving it a very serene and austere ambience.
Roof Plan
The SAWCHU building today is used for a wide variety of auroville-related meetings, community interaction and also houses some office space. It is a very contemporary building built in 1997 as an offering to the country on the occasion of sri aurobindo's 125th birth-anniversary, built by architects Anupama Kundoo and Sonali Phadnis.

South Elevation
Reflected Ceiling Plan
Each pair of columns has a bench in its middle for providing a comfortable seating facing the open amphitheater and artificial pond which was meant to be a lotus pond.
Section AA’
Section BB’
North Elevation
The plan of SAWCHU Pavilion is radially based and the main interaction space is a circle base and roof supported by inclined columns which are then connected to the cantilever beams on the ceiling.
It has gutter around its periphery which is joined to the four artifical ponds in the four opposite directions meant to act as water bodies in monsoon.
These cantilever beams rather placing outside, are internally placed, maybe pertaining to look inside oneself rather than outside for peace and happiness in one's life. Plan
