HAPPY BIRTHDAY A family celebrates and you are warmly invited to join in!

Dear guest, How quickly time passes! It feels like only yesterday when we made the decision to take over the Andreas Hofer Guest House. After only 2 years the Guest House was renovated into a 3 Star Hotel with 50 beds, the first step towards the future!

20 years later we now look back at all the experiences over these wonderful years in our Familien Wellness Hotel in Mandarfen filled with dancing, laughter, music and festivities. After 20 years filled of wonderful moments, memories, happy times and even some sad times, it’s now time to celebrate this anniversary.

From the postbox To begin with we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for so much positive feedback. As it would take up more space than the magazine itself we have selected a few short examples from our guests’ letters. However, if you are interested you can find all these articles on our Website under the heading “from guest to guest”.

We would therefore like to warmly invite you to celebrate this anniversary with us. The main highlights referred to are the Christmas celebrations at the Andreas Hofer and the nostalgic times in December.

All good things come in threes This saying also applies to us. When crossing the Fernpass you will come across our third family business, the Tirolean Locherboden Guest House. It’s well worth making a stop here, not only for the dreamlike views over the Obere Inntal valley but in particular the special ambiance and the local Tirolean cuisine.

And with so much hospitality between Tirol and Bavaria what should definitely not be missing? The appropriate in-house music! All year round there is a lively atmosphere in our family business. We ourselves are all passionate musicians and naturally we aim to share this passion at some of the events in our family businesses.

The mountains are our life, tradition runs through our blood and as the son of the landlord and landlady Franz and Paula Auer, I was born with guest hospitality running through my veins.

the Höllentalanger hut was accepted a small dream came to fruition for us. It was our wish for a long time to be able to work as landlords during the summer in a mountain hut. You will find us in the Bavarian mountains at the foot of the Zugspitz from the end of May until mid-October where we host mountain climbers and hikers.

At the mountain hut in the summer or at some of the many musical events at the Locherboden, we always reach for our own musical instruments. It’s lovely for us to see that our youngest son is also showing a keen interest in this tradition.

IN THE BEGINNING…

From the very onset of tourism right up to the highest and most modern mountain railway in Tirol! tal became easily accessible resulting in alpinists and tourists coming into the valley to climb the imposing mountains.

More and more local men from the valley were able to find work opportunities as mountain guides.

Things are always hard at the beginning and this is true for Pitztal where tourism found its way slowly into the valley. The foundation of tourist development in the mountains and the natural gems in Pitzal began through the Austrian and German Alpine Association. The Taschachhaus, built in 1874, was one of the first Alpine Association huts and by 1878 there were already 10 guest beds in Mittleberg.

After the opening of the Arlberg mountain railway in 1884 the dreamlike Pitz-

Around 1910, working as a mountain guide became a profitable way of earning for up to 60 men. During the following 60 years Pitztal was further developed with a great deal of investments into the tourist infrastructure.

The valley roads were completed, the Fuldaer Höhenweg high route was constructed and in 1970 the first chair lift from Mandarfen to Rifflesee came into operation.

Within all these projects it has been a major concern to continue to protect the unique nature early enough and this has been proven for example by the resettlement in 1953 of the up until then extinct ibex.

After the arrival of the first chair lift into the valley in 1970 tourism began to rise.

The Pitztal glacier was subsequently developed in 1983. Since then it’s possible for our guests to enjoy the wonderful snow conditions from the autumn right through until the spring months.

With the finger continually on the pulse the glacier railway was modernised and merged in 1994 together with the

Rifflesee ski region. The latest gem on the Pitztal glacier is the Wildspitzbahn which will operate from this winter. As Austria’s highest and most modern mountain railway it now rounds off this chapter for now in the tourism development of the valley. Despite this swift development in tourism during the winter and summer

months, Pitztal has still retained its former charm.

Our guests can look out from the Andreas Hofer at this unique and natural landscape and see right up to the breath taking glacier world. Unlike some other Tirolean regions, leisure time, sport and nature all unite together here.

LOOKING BACK

From farmhouse to a winter sport Hotel – The Andreas Hofer over the years

Until 1927 this house was a double house with built in stables. Historians and witnesses at the time believe that the house was the first house in Mandarfen which was inhabited.

1928 - The Andreas Hofer was not a guesthouse but a large farmhouse in which two families lived. It was also not known under the name of Andreas Hofer. The names of these families were „Katerer“ and „Zischgn“.

1929 - The house was completely burnt down by a big fire.

1931 - Opening celebations of the new guesthouse Andreas Hofer. The name of the hotel came from the owner at that time, Josef Neururer, who was the spitting image of the tirolean freedom fighter of 1809, Andreas Hofer.

1932 - From the chronicle of the voluntary fire fighters in Plangeroß: „On 25th of January a fire broke out in the guesthouse in Mandarfen. The house became victim to the flames and burnt to the ground.“ Under the influence of this misfortune, the men of Plangeroß founded the voluntary fire brigade.

1948 - The guesthouse Andreas Hofer was surrounded in flames yet again.

However the men of the voluntary fire brigade arrived on time. It was icy cold, the wind whistled through the valley, wild snow flurries brought three and a half metres of new snow.

Under difficult circumstances and high avalanche danger, a waterpump was transported by horsepower from Plangeroß to Mandarfen. Despite these adversities the firemen managed to extinguish the fire. It was a miracle that no lives were ever lost in any of these fires. The most valuable piece in the house is the crucfix, which survived all the fires and still hangs on the wall in the hotel restaurant.

1949 - The house was rebuilt with central heating and electric light. The guesthouse was the first in Pitztal to boast central heating, electricity, and running water. The Andreas Hofer was the most progressive guesthouse in the valley at that time.

1950 - The 50s was a time when economy stabilised, which was also visible in Pitztal. More and more guests sought peace and idyll in this mountain region.

1951- After the death of Josef Neururer, his son Reinhold Neururer with his wife Sabine took over the guesthouse and ran it until 1976.

1976 - After the death of Reinhold Neururer, his son Walter Neururer took over and ran the Andreas Hofer until the year 1988. In this year Walter Neururer died in a tragic car accident.

His widow continued until 1991. The 70s and 80s were influenced by an economic rising. The Andreas Hofer in Mandarfen was then the meeting place for walkers, skiers, climbers, locals, guests, hunters, mountain guides and ski instuctors. Even then the world famous Apré Ski in Andreas

Hofer was in full swing.

1992 - Paula Auer, the then innkeeper of the Hotel Riffelsees, and Franz Auer (certified mountain guide and ski instructor) applied with their son Thomas Auer (certifed ski instructor) for the Andreas Hofer, which was for sale.

1994 -Thomas Auer, now innkeeper of the Andreas Hofer built up the guesthouse into a 3-star hotel and added on a further 50 beds. With a sauna, steamroom, solarium and an elevator, in Pitztal offering generous deals for the Hotel was very modern for its time. families with children.

1996 - Thomas Auer had a hotel ski lift built on the northern edge of the vil- 2010 - The family Auer applied for the lease of the Höllentalanger hut in the lage of Mandarfen. THE START OF A 20 YEAR FRIENDSHIP

EASTER 1994 My husband and I and our son who was four years old at that time, had our first winter holiday 20 years ago at the “Andreas Hofer” At that time the Dorfstandl was already there and the entrance was up the steps into what is now the reception and bar area. To the right there was the guest restaurant with a bay room with wide open views of the Rifflesee ski region and up to the glacier.

We have so many memories of our stay at the Andreas Hofer: “Breakfast together with Franziska (daughter of the owners)“

Over the years there have been friendly members of staff such as Burgi, the soul of the Hotel at the reception, Peter, Mustafa and Martin in the service area who greeted us every day by simply asking “are you all well?” Lovely to see you here again! We were spoilt by their wonderful cuisine – after two weeks our ski trousers were much too tight - and our sons had everything they desired.

Genuine friendships have been formed in the Hotel, such as between the Schmidt family and us or between Gernot and Sören who kept us in touch throughout the years with all the media news.

At the Familien Wellness Hotel Andreas Hofer ski fun begins for the young ones right in front of the Hotel door. The 20.000m² large Ski Bambini Kinderland with wide practise slope, spacious area for beginners and a playground, is the ideal meeting place to make new friends and to try out skiing.

With trained children’s holiday representatives, top qualified children’s ski teachers and the Pitztal mascot Pitzi, every day will be an unforgettable experience.

In addition our children’s restaurant

with 80 seats inside and outside will provide all the nourishment they need at lunchtime for their ravenous appetites.

If the weather is bad the Bambinistube has plenty of space to keep warm and play.

The Bambini Kinderland is also easily accessible from the ski region which means parents can come by and watch the young ones practising!

Guests at the Familien Wellness Hotel Andreas Hofer may use the Hotel practise lift free of charge during the day. Every Tuesday there is free tobogganing for Hotel guests!

Our Mandarfener Dorfstadl is right next to the Hotel. Ideal to stop at during the day for some excellent Tirolean cuisine and crispy pizzas and in the evenings after some wonderful skiing let the day fade away in a comfortable atmosphere here.

Young and old meet here in the evenings for cosy get-togethers, playing billiards or darts, a round of cards or dancing the night away. As the first Sky Bar in Pitztal the Dorfstadl shows live transmission of football matches and champion leagues for all football fans. In the winter the

Manni tells you how to make them really well

Ingredients: Dried and chopped white bread, eggs, butter, onions, garlic, salt, pepper, milk, pureed spinach

spinach and then add everything to the chopped bread cubes. Add egg yolk and egg white and mix thoroughly. Finally add the dumplings to lightly salted water and bring to the boil. For almost 17 years Manni has been a fix part of our family business – a good soul in the Hotel and a man for everything. As kitchen chef in the Hotel restaurants he has taken care of the culinary wellbeing of our guests for years.

In the meantime, he has also acquired the reputation of the best burgers in Tirol in the rear Pitztal that can be found.

At the Burgersadl directly at the practise lifts, the young and the older ski

rabbits will be fed and boosted up for a day of skiing. In the spring Manni is kept busy with all the preparation work for the Höllentalanger hut where he also cooks everything freshly throughout the whole summer.

We are therefore lucky to be able to provide our guests at the hut with true local home cooking and almost 100% can guarantee not using any ready make products. Many thanks!

From October the new Wildspitzbahn brings you comfortably and quickly up to the 3.440m high located mountain station at the Hinteren Brunnkogel. The mountain station is therefore the highest summit station in Austria with the highest mountain restaurant in the eastern Alps.

At the Café 3.440 there is a free-floating sun terrace with wide glass windows.

In the Rifflesee family ski region (directly opposite the Hotel) you can experience ski fun on over 31 different and varied kilometers of slopes and with the connecting descent you can reach the valley station at the glacier railway quickly and comfortably. The ski bus will also bring you back to the glacier express valley station in just 2 minutes. From here you can reach Tirol’s highest glacier in only a few minutes.The wide slopes, the best snow conditions all year round and skiing in a unique mountain panorama are just some of the many advantages of glacier skiing.

GREAT MUSIC The Höllentalanger hut: An excursion near Garmisch Our Höllentalanger hut is located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the foot of the Zugspitz, where comfortable accommodation for mountain climbers has been provided for over 100 years.

For experienced mountain climbers the hut is an ideal starting point to climb the Zugspitz from its most challenging side – the climb over the Höllentalanger Hut is a real classic! But it is also just as remarkable for mountain enthusiastic families, daily tours or as a hiking base.

The climb through the Höllentalklamm with its rambling surroundings around

the hut, its stream beds, scattered boulders and lots more, is particularly exciting for children.
