A range is a very personal performance a designer gives to the public, similar to an art exhibition ”the beauty of a work of art is its capacity to transmit its own story telling” (Gigli 2004:34). Observing Art work, it is noted that artists usually create through the observation of what is happening around them,” the spirit of our time.” Looking at the zeitgeist of our time, it has been seen that there is a trend towards the end of the world (ancient mythologies and scientific studies), society, technological advances and social networking. Inspiration from these sources was inevitable and thus a new story is created.

The designer’s initial concept for the range is based on the life of a Burlesque performer. Inspiration was drawn from the movie Burlesque which was directed by Steve Antin and was released in 2010. The clothing is risqué and when one thinks of Burlesque you picture feather boas, sequenced bras and the raven-haired reincarnation of striptease Dita von Teese states Mackenzie (2009:1). Teese quotes (2006:7) “Burlesque is a world of illusion and dreams”. Linn maintained that (2008:5) women dressed risqué in the entertainment business. Their outfits were short, tight, over exaggerated and very revealing to say the least. Based on this concept of daring garments the range will portray a sexy revealing mood.

The Xhosa Juku range is inspired by Xhosa culture, the people of Xhosa descendent are also often called the “Red Blanket People”, and they are of Nguni stock, like the Zulu. The name Xhosa is a generalized term for a diversity of proud clans, the Pondo, Bomvana, Thembu and the Xhosa tribe itself. The red and the orange of ochre were the traditional colours of the Xhosa, Tembu and Bomvana (“the red ones”).
