REPORT OF GIVING

2023/2024

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Thank you for making Tanglin a philanthropic priority. This Report of Giving celebrates the many people in our community who want to make a difference, pay it forward and help us go over and beyond our curriculum. It also answers the question: “where does the money go?”.

As a non-profit school that is about to celebrate its Centenary, we believe that education happens best in an ongoing relationship, and the Foundation is a great example. Even as we have made changes around how we honour our donors, run our appeals, and communicate our successes, the Foundation remains an important part of the school.

With your support, our focus remains on enabling the exceptional and extraordinary. We remain committed to ensuring high levels of governance, oversight, and reporting. We will remain true to our non-profit charitable status, and we will continue to focus on generations of excellence in our second century.

This last year has been a breakout year for the Foundation, and we have achieved new records in both participation, funds raised, and grants made. We are grateful for your support and our Tanglin community. Together we have made an impact, transformed young lives and shaped the institution for the future.

Thank you!

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LEARNING

The Foundation is now 12 years old. Having been involved in some of the early conversations as the Foundation was first launched, it has been hugely rewarding to see it grow from strength to strength and to witness the incredible impact of the exceptional opportunities it has provided for students, staff and alumni. The Foundation has made grants of more than $2M, impacted thousands of lives and been recognised by the Singapore Government with a Charity Transparency Award. As a non-profit school, our focus for the Foundation has been on raising awareness, broadening impact, and making a difference.

This has been especially true in the four specific areas that the Foundation funds. These are Arts; Sport; Engagement with Global Issues; and Innovation, Imagination and Inquiry. Teachers, students and alumni can apply for funding to support projects over and above the curriculum. These can be at an individual school level, or across the institution. Projects are assessed collaboratively and evaluated against eight desired learning outcomes.

Thank you for the part that you play in creating this supportive environment for learning – it is a wonderful place to be!

MESSAGE FROM THE DEVELOPMENT

DIRECTOR & HEAD OF FOUNDATION

This report reflects our community’s culture of giving, celebrates our past and envisions our future. As we acknowledge the impact you’ve made this past year, it is a great time to reflect on the power of partnership! This year, with your support, and the work of our Foundation Advocates and the Development Team, we raised more money, from more people, and funded more projects than we ever have before. It is humbling and a great way to commenmorate our first Centenary!

But, like all educators, we want to be looking forward – our second century is upon us. And the Foundation will be an integral part of Tanglin’s second century.

We will be a channel of engagement, partnership, philanthropy and stewardship. We will do so because as Anne Frank wrote in her diary 90 years ago, “No one has ever become poor by giving.”

Thank you for your support!

Arts

VISITING AUTHOR, FRED BLUNT

Award winning author and illustrator, Fred Blunt, captivated our students with his drawings of whimsical cartoon characters. Students developed their art skills through drama and illustration. They learnt how to entertain through their pictures, capturing a moment in time and enhancing their storytelling. Fred’s workshops included illustrations that were inspirted by his works of Captain Falsebeard, Lionel the Lonely Monster and Mr Gnome. (Project by The Infant Library and Infant Arts Department)

Arts

VISITING ARTIST, BRIANA CORRIGAN

The former lead-singer of The Beautiful South, Briana Corrigan, visited in January to work with our rock and pop aspiring musicians at Tanglin. She coached singers across the Junior and Senior schools on stage presence, interpreting songs, engaging with an audience and technical know how. She not only spent time preparing the bands for the annual Battle of the Bands, but also helped students with the process of developing their first songs! (Project by Denny Aw Yong, Music Manager)

THE CENTENNIAL ARTS TRAIL

We Dreamed a Forest, by Donna Ong

In February 2024, the Centennial Arts Trail was launched with a reception to unveil the mesmerising We Dreamed a Forest by the talented artist, Donna Ong. This installation is inspired by the tropical rain forest around us, which has captured our collective imaginations since the beginning of time. It celebrates how the forest has inspired us but also highlights how the untenable nature of the forest has allowed it to be used by generations of artists, authors, explorers, and legislators to project their fears and desires. The art piece is located at the Atrium of the Centenary Building. (Project by Michael Holiday, Director of Co-Curriculum and the Arts Committee)

Engagement with Global Issues

LUNAR NEW YEAR

ASSEMBLY

This year’s assembly brought together 1,700 students and staff, with student performances in singing, dancing and poem recitation, and a martial arts show as one of the highlights. Such experiences significantly enhance a sense of community and cultural appreciation among students, leaving them inspired by the joy and richness of the festivities. (Project by Rosy He, Head of Infant Chinese and Shani Dovell, Head of Junior Chinese)

Arts

YEAR 3 STRINGS PROGRAMME

The Year 3 Strings Programme is a legacy project by the Foundation, and a highlight for our Junior students. All 190 students were given the opportunity to learn an orchestral stringed instrument such as the violin, viola, cello, double bass or harp in a group. Since its initiation, the Strings programme has introduced students to the joys of instrumental music making and aided in the development of our ensembles throughout Junior and Senior, such as Tanglin’s Sostenuto String Ensemble. (Project by Fiona Knight Lucas, Head of Junior Music)

Engagement with Global Issues TED x

Since 2021, this thought-provoking event has provided an enriching learning opportunity for students, by diving deep into issues through a multidisciplinary lens. This year, our Middle School speaker competition winners Mia Thapar, Stanley Yuan, and Vidith Kumar spoke and shared the stage with well-regarded experts on the theme of Entanglements. Speakers from all around Singapore included Jasmine Go from Google who spoke about demystifying AI, Kay Vasey from MeshMinds on urban farming and technology, Professor Lutfey Siddiqi from NUS on how constructive criticism might be beneficial, and Niti Gupta (Tanglin parent) about debugging the mind’s code. 15 student-volunteers were also involved in making this event a success. (Project by John Sprague, Extended Project/Essay Co-ordinator, Senior School)

Innovation, Imagination & Inquiry

LEGO ROBOTICS CHALLENGE

Robots & Dinosaurs

This year’s Challenge for Year 2 and 3 students was a resounding success, not just in terms of fun and excitement but also in terms of their experiential learning. We dove into a world filled with dinosaurs, design, engineering, and coding, collaborating in teams

and tackling several challenges with precision, partnership and perseverance. From constructing functional robots to navigating code through Lego WeDo, Dash races, Bee-Bot mazes, and Ozobot challenges, this day was fun-tastic!

(Project by Donovan Zegna, Head of Integrated Tech, Junior School)

Engagement with Global Issues TEACH REX

Year 5 students embarked on a remarkable adventure with Teach Rex, providing a captivating experience. Facing a 200kg gorilla on a Monday morning was certainly not what the Year 5s had anticipated. However, this surprising encounter resulted in something truly remarkable—a profound connection and a newfound love for their gentle guest.

Beyond their close encounter with Thomas, students had the opportunity to enhance their spelling and grammar skills and explore the world of video production through green screen technology.

Through a compelling combination of engaging assemblies and interactive workshops, the students delved into crucial concepts of environmental preservation and conservation. The workshop helped launch Year 5’s Pristine Planet topic, setting the stage for the school year filled with engaging and impactful learning.

(Project by Jenny Woods, Assistant Head of Year 5, Junior School)

Innovation, Imagination & Inquiry VISITING EXPEDITIONER, DAVID LIM

Leader of the first Singapore expedition to Everest, David Lim, visited our Senior students to share tales of his adventures, overcoming disability and setting goals for the future. Enraptured by his tales of climbing virgin peaks, facing challenges in the desert and leading a team through both success and failure, the students were inspired to pursue their own goals, and many said that one day, they too would love to climb Everest. Holding the famous ice axe that was used to summit Everest was a key highlight! (Project by Emma Cottrell, Acting Head of Year 6, Junior School)

Sport

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

It was an action-packed school year for Sport, with students competing in an incredible 22 overseas competitions across the region and beyond. In addition to a wide range of SEASAC and FOBISIA events, students had the opportunity to compete at the Western Australian Swimming Championships in Perth, Dubai College Rugby 7s, and

the Queensland All Schools Touch Championships. These exceptional experiences challenge and stretch students, as they learn to compete in new environments as well as strengthen their bond through travelling, living and socializing together during school trips.

(Project by Dave Radcliffe, Director of Sport)

- Why We Give -

“There’s magic in sustainable giving”

The Toh Family, Tanglin parents

Keith and Christina Toh, parents of Alden and Avery in Infant School, have become strong advocates for Tanglin Trust School and are the first Guardian-level members of the Tanglin Trust Foundation. The Toh family (including their children) have a lifetime commitment to growing the communities around them. With this in mind, they began discussions with Tanglin Trust in 2023 around growing impact through the Foundation for the long term. After discussions with Abhra Bhattacharjee, the Development Director and Head of Foundation, Christina and Keith agreed to a significant donation to help fund the Centennial Arts Trail, which would make possible the commissioning and installation of We Dreamed A Forest by Singaporean artist, Donna Ong. Donna’s unique art installation was unveiled in January 2024, and can be viewed at one end of the Atrium in the Centenary Building on Level 2.

“We’re really drawn to organisations like Tanglin that can grow sustainable good for many generations. Tanglin is a non-profit institution, so its resources and profits are fully recycled into sustaining its enduring mission for generations. It has a visionary approach to education, embodied

in initiatives like the Foundation, the Centennial Arts Trail, the Institute, and the Highlands programme. We believe in this vision of a community where students and parents benefit not only from a world-class education, but also from expansive connections to the arts, the surrounding community, the business world, the splendor of nature, and thought leaders from around the world. ”

Keith and Christina see financial contributions as part of a broader commitment to support Tanglin over time. When asked to describe their vision for philanthropy, they reflected, “there is magic in giving to sustainable communities, because the gift can multiply itself over time for the community. We also hope the act of giving will multiply itself too, as our children see this principle lived as part of our family life and hopefully, part of their own lives in the future.”

We chose Tanglin Trust School for its dedication to, and focus on, education - something which we are very passionate about. We are proud to support the Foundation in its mission to enhance an excellent education to make it truly exceptional.

We both also proudly serve as Foundation Advocates to raise awareness, and to engender a culture of philanthropy, among the Tanglin community.

I give to the Tanglin Foundation because I want to ensure my children and their classmates continue to benefit from the amazing learning opportunities that the Foundation offers them.

I am glad I can contribute to the school through the Foundation. It gives me joy to continue my support as a monthly donor through staff giving.
