Newsticker +++ From prototype to production start – LP15 sliding board +++ Technical service across Europe +++ Nissen France – new managing director +++
Dear Readers, The first issue of "Flash" is part of history - the second is now in your hands. It is again worthwhile to take a few minutes and find out what‘s new in the Nissen Group. Starting off, I‘d like to thank our customers for their large amount of feedback, their suggestions but also criticism they have expressed. It‘s nice to see that the written word is still carefully read CONTENTS here and there. Page 2 a Plastic safety barriers in Switzerland a Light arrow LP15 sliding board

At least domestically, 2013 has developed into a very good year, despite the never-ending winter and the period of frost lasting far into April. Traditionally, the IFO business index also experiences reliable growth in election years, creating a good "street atmosphere" during federal elections.
However, the other European markets continue to be in the midst of radical change and are suffering under financial constraints in their infrastructure. "International project business is as tough as leather", said one English customer succinctly. The major football event taking place in Brazil in 2014 is also already looming large on the horizon. The CONFED Cup was held at different venues there this summer with an impressive result by the host team in the final against Italy. Nissen was able to successfully set up its "event fence" at match venues for directing streams of traffic and spectators.

Advance LED warning trailer with solar power supply In light of the consistently increasing volume of traffic and the demand for greater safety on the roads, the need for advance warning trailers with active photometric information is becoming larger. Active light guarantees good recognisability compared to conventional sheet metal signs, even in poor visibility. This applies to south Europe, among other places, where the infrastructure is continually growing and the need for traffic safety systems is rising, despite the euro crisis. Because the organisation of construction sites is different in these regions and LED trailers are also used for other specialised purposes, we were tasked to develop an advance LED warning trailer with as long an operating time as possible. In doing so, we used SMD LED, a technology that has been long-established on the market, with power-saving features making it especially suitable for being powered by solar modules. In the selection of solar modules we focused on the highest efficiency rating, making the energy concept completely compatible and autonomous operation possible – depending on the sunshine, of course. From the flexibility afforded by means of freely programmable LED surfaces and configuration for up to four colours, the LED technology gives you the option of using advance warning trailers as information boards at events, or for advertising or PR, besides their intended purpose for traffic control.

Mobile Plastic Safety Barriers in Switzerland
Construction pit barrier
in Thun, Switzerland
A long-proven product in Germany is now gaining interest among our Swiss customers: the Mobile Plastic Safety Barrier. The safety barriers, which have customarily been used in Switzerland up to now, consist of two wooden slats painted red and white, which are mounted on a base plate by means of slat supports welded to iron bars. This type of safety barrier provides significantly less protection compared to our plastic safety barriers, particularly due to their poor recognisability. Flying debris can also be hazardous if the wooden slats are accidentally driven into or over.
The safety barriers' reflective red and white foil remains visible at any time of day or night. Visibility, especially in the dark, can be significantly increased by the addition of warning lamps. The dimensions (2 x 1 m) and low weight (16 kg) make handling simple and easy. With the help of special racks, safety barriers can be stored in a space-saving manner and transported in large numbers by truck. Feedback on the plastic safety barriers used up to now, e.g., from Swiss authorities, construction workers and pedestrians, has been unreservedly positive. They are the significantly safer alternative to the red and white wooden slats being used in Switzerland up to now.
Plastic safety barriers are normally used to secure construction pits, as can be seen in the photos from Thun in the Canton of Bern. Moreover, safety barriers can also be employed as a homogeneous building site barrier. They can also be used to separate pedestrian and bicycle routes and at events to separate and guide participants and spectators. The safety barriers are made of high-quality plastic and are furnished with galvanized end pipes. This makes them weather-resistant and maintenance free. Construction pit barrier in Thun, Switzerland
From prototype to production start The small LP15 light arrow has established itself and is now being used by all companies and authorities for the appropriate purposes. This encouraged us to further develop this product and design an LP15 sliding board, paying particular attention to prac足tical features and cost-efficiency. For example, fuel consumption is not increased by the pro足tec足足ted structure behind the cab, but sounds made by the wind occuring during everyday work are drastically reduced.
We also made sure that the design would make it possible to drive 80 km/h in lifted position. Visibility is not restricted in any position, resulting in increased safety. Also in the operation of the sliding board we took the wishes of users into account. The number of operating controls in vehicles is steadily rising, so our remote control unit provides options for operating different systems such as working lights, beacons or warning lamps with one and the same device, leading to a reduction in the number of controls. Another advantage is that the design of the frame already factored in the ability to mount an LED traffic sign instead of a light arrow.

Even our services look beyond the horizon Our company is known worldwide for developing and manufacturing high quality and innovative products. But this is not enough for us. To ensure the best level of customer care, we offer comprehensive, Europewide, on-site technical services. In Germany alone up to three qualified members of staff are always ready to provide quick and competent assistance to our customers for any questions, requests and problems related to our equipment. Our in-house service team headquartered in Tönning makes us competent and efficient in the field.
In some European countries Nissen employs its own service technicians. In other countries we have assigned this task to local business partners who take on the role of a Nissen service centre. If necessary, these partners receive onsite support from Nissen technicians, also at short notice when required.
Nissen service centres are also located at many places in Germany. Just like our staff out in the field, they also provide quick and competent assistance.
We are unable to mention all of the service technicians and partners working on our behalf throughout Europe by name here. We would, however, like to use this opportunity to express our thanks to each and every one of them for their support and assistance.
Of course, we don't offer this service in Germany alone, but throughout Europe.

Something to smile about: Pharos WeNiPol – the new product idea
The News Flash 01/2013 cover story has now been confirmed by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). Tested safety T1/ W2 for the Steel Pro 500 safety barrier.
Even the police have a few product ideas and quickly implement them as well, as recently occurred at Tag der Polizei ("Police Day") in North Rhine-Westfalia.

Seeing and being seen is what matters
Due to its many years of experience Nissen produces excellently visible, innovative, quality products. That's why we were able to present a wide range of traffic safety systems to emergency services. Among other things, we presented our latest Star-Flash LED Type 627 Guide Light System, our "Synchros" Mobile LED Sequential Hazard Set, our traffic cones and of course our mobile WeNiPol II LED Variable Message Sign. Seeing and being seen was our motto for four further trade fairs where we exhibited in the first half of 2013. "Expo Traffic" held in Moscow in March is one of the leading trade fairs for traffic safety products in Russia. Nissen Nordic was represented at the fair with its own stand. Visitors coming from all regions of the Russian Federation showed great interest the LED variable message signs, mobile traffic lights and guide light systems. "IPOMEX" held in Munster in April, which was supervised by our sales manager Rainer Göttsche and our area manager Bernd Struve, was very successful for us. We had a large turnout of trade visitors at our stand on all three days of the fair.
future needs as well as the ever-increasing requirements of safety equipment products for the respective emergency services of police, fire, rescue services and disaster protection. At "Traffex" in Birmingham (UK), also held in April, we were represented by Nissen UK and their managing director Ilyas Sharif. It was a great pleasure to welcome to our stand long-term customers, interested business people and representatives from the "Highways Agency" and the "Department for Transport". Among many other Nissen products, we presented a new series of portable LED variable traffic signs – the MultiSign. It was developed for special construction projects in the UK for motorways of up to 5 lanes and is fully approved by the "Highways Agency". Together with our partner, Signal AG, we were again represented by Nissen AG Switzerland and its director Jean-Marc Sciboz at "Suisse Public" held in Bern (Switzerland) in June this year in order to present current Nissen products. The most important innovations in the field of large-scale equipment included, among other things, our mobile TTMA (Truck Trailer Mounted Attenuator) crash absorber and the advance LED warning trailer with solar power, which were met with great interest from visitors every day of the fair. Many visitors from different fields took the opportunity to inform themselves extensively and in detail about our new products, and this is why Suisse Public remains one of the most important European trade fairs for us.
There was a lively exchange of information and know-how, with discussions primarily focused on

Nissen France – new managing director Today we would like to introduce our new managing director of Nissen France, Mr Jean-Philippe Mayance (49). Many will recall Mr Mayance from his previous work at Nissen France. The high regard held for him among our French customers as well as his expertise in the field of traffic safety are an important contribution to further advance Nissen France on the French market.
Mr Mayance succeeded Mr Michael Veyhl on 1st May 2013. Mr Veyhl entered into well-deserved retirement at the end of April. We'd like to use this opportunity to thank him once more and wish him all the best for his future. We look forward to working with Mr Mayance and warmly welcome him to the team.
