SHAKING UP THE TRADITIONAL WORKPLACE

Design Public Group (DPG) is the parent company of Danish Design Store, Design Public, and Corral. Headquartered in Los Angeles, they specialize in creating inspired spaces for clients by providing a wide range of ancillary furniture. We sat down for an interview with DPG Co-Owner and CEO Matthew Lieb to discuss topics from American design to open plan offices.

Can you tell us about DPG’s approach? We approach this less from a design side and more from the business side. Ancillary furniture is becoming bigger and bigger, in terms of percentage of any given project and the importance within the project. So, our whole business model has been centered around the question, how do we make it easier for businesses like Tangram to find, procure and provide great ancillary products to the end client? We saw the growth of ancillary in the workplace and we thought we had a better way to help people deal with that, so we started buying companies that we thought had capabilities that we could patch together and make this whole thing easier for contract dealers. 4

ANCILLARY OF THE QUARTER

“How do we make these open spaces a little more intimate without putting up a bunch of walls?”

Of the furniture included in our Ancillary of the Quarter, what’s your favorite piece and why? Wegner CH24 Wishbone Chair. How different can you make a chair? It’s used residentially, in restaurants, in the office environment—so it’s a durable chair, but it has a cool design to it. I like this one because it has a good price point, it’s contract grade, it has a unique design, it’s got a well-known designer behind it, and it’s not something that you see everywhere you go in the US. It’s all about the cool little details.

What is DPG’s distinguishing factor?

What are some current furniture trends you’re seeing?

It’s four things. First, the largest catalog of ancillary

furniture in the country. Second, sophisticated logistics

to the open plan office. People are now realizing that

else. Third, technology tools to make the entire ancillary

very flexible. It’s an innovative solution to the difficulties of an open plan that offers creative ways to cordon off areas without putting up a wall.

A lot of design today is driven by the aesthetic from Scandinavia—Denmark, Finland, Sweden. However, one of the things we’re most excited about is our own design studio in the Bay Area called Corral. Corral is focused on reinvigorating American design. The founder, Eric Pfeiffer, is a talented designer who has designed for lots of big companies over the years. Through Corral, he brought together a lot of prominent American designers to create an American design aesthetic rooted in contract ancillary. Because he’s in the Bay Area, he’s close to a lot of the trends, as it could be argued that the ancillary wave started in the San Francisco tech industry. So, he’s taking an American design aesthetic and approach to ancillary furniture for the contract world, and doing it very well. People don’t really think of American design and he’s out there trying to change that by working with a lot of talented, young, American designers. 5
