LETTER FROM JOE When I attended college at the University of Michigan, the classrooms were huge, impersonal lecture halls, we took notes with a pen and paper, the libraries actually held books and we walked uphill in the snow both ways. However, since then, the educational system has continued to change and evolve in so many ways. Passive learning environments are old-school and new age pedagogies are centered around the idea of active and flexible learning spaces that integrate technology and encourage collaboration. Between watching my five children navigate through the school system and my involvement with the Orangewood Foundation and The Samueli Academy, I’ve witnessed firsthand the changes happening in education. The integration of technology into learning environments has been a complete game changer. Students no longer take notes with pen and paper, they use laptops, tablets and mobile whiteboards. Professors are expected to engage their classes, not just stand and deliver information. And instead of books, libraries house collaborative and quiet spaces. As a result, students and educators are using spaces differently and they need their furniture to evolve with them. As one of the top National dealers in education, I’m very proud of the relationships we’ve established and continue to foster with our clients and partners and the campuses we’ve built together. I’m also continually impressed by the breadth of knowledge and expertise our team brings to these relationships. In my opinion, the most important investment we can make is in our youth, they are the future. Tangram is committed to continuing to grow resources for our education group so they can provide the best support to the Southern California education community. I’m very excited to watch as the style of education continues to grow and develop. We’ve come a long way from stiff lecture halls and wooden desks and we may not be too far off from a Jetson’s-like learning experience, but I can guarantee whatever comes next, Tangram will be ahead of the curve.

The Samueli Academy is a 480-student charter high school that was brought to fruition through the Orangewood Foundation. The Academy offers local foster and community youth a new choice for their high school education. Susan Samueli and Sandi Jackson felt that Orange County needed a school that would give students the kind of care, attention and education they need to succeed in life. The ladies rallied like-minded individuals and different organizations to join their efforts. Joe Lozowski, CEO of Tangram was one of those individuals who shared their ideals and was highly passionate about their cause. Lozowski has volunteered countless hours over the past ten years with the charity and when he heard that they were beginning to fundraise for The Samueli Academy School, he joined the Champions Committee as a Co-Chair to lead fundraising efforts. After the funds for the school had been raised and construction

14

had been completed, it was only natural that Tangram would be the one to provide furniture for the new campus. The three-story, 30,000-square-foot building features innovative learning spaces that support their STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) focused, project-based curriculum. Each floor of the new building features a STEM lab and four learning studios that share a collaborative learning commons. Designed as a vibrant “live and learn urban village, the campus is intended to be an inspirational sustainable environment where learning can happen everywhere. The school colors of yellow, orange, gray and white were selected for the finishes throughout. Steelcase manufactures an integrated collection of classroom furniture including

chairs, tables, whiteboards, and instructor stations designed to support a full range of teaching and learning styles. Educators are often faced with a tough choice: promote active learning or organize a classroom to fit as many students as possible. The combination of the Steelcase Node chair and Verb table lessens this challenge. Both are designed for quick, easy transitions between room configurations making passive spaces quickly active. Additionally, Turnstone Campfire was specified for the Learning Commons to better promote collaboration amongst the students. Reminiscent of a family-style dining table, Campfire brings unique collaborative spaces and personal study havens into the classroom that are both durable and easily reconfigurable. One of the most interesting and innovative spaces on the campus is the Virtual Enterprise Classroom. The VE program

Architect: LPA Furniture: Tangram Interiors Photography: Costea Photography Inc. that uses work-based learning, teaches students about business through task-oriented and hands-on coursework. The program enables students to learn about careers; running their own business while developing interpersonal and organizational skills, and using technology. To best support the curriculum, the VE learning environment was also set up like an office. Collaborative tables were fitted with Divisio Side Screens to give the pods a more “office workspace” feel and mobile pedestals with cushion tops provide file storage and additional seating. “The Samueli Academy is an incredible school changing the trajectory of many young lives and it’s really amazing to have been a part of it both personally and professionally.” says Joe Lozowski.

ACTIVE LEARNInG Interview with Amber Jones Tangram Education is focused on helping schools, colleges and universities create the most effective and inspiring learning environments for students and educators alike. The woman leading the charge is Amber Jones, Director of Education. Jones immediately fell in love with working with schools when she entered the industry ten years ago. Her passion, experience and desire to never stop learning has made her an uncontested expert in solutions for both K-12 and Higher Education. Over the last decade, the educational system has changed dramatically and with that, we’ve seen a change in classroom trends. In recent years, the focus has centered around the idea of Active Learning. “[Active Learning] means movement, collaboration and no bad seats,” says Jones. She continues, “This style of teaching engages and empowers students by encouraging collaboration and allowing them to learn in a way that will translate easily into daily life in today’s workforce.” So how do we design for an active learning environment? No fixed furniture, technology throughout the classroom and tossing out the traditional ideology that each space should have a front and back. There’s a lot that goes into transitioning a traditional classroom into an active learning environment, but possibly one of the most prominent changes is the presence of technology. The popularity of incorporating technology in the classroom is becoming simply unavoidable. It has significantly impacted the way in which instructors teach and students learn and the furniture integrated into the classrooms must support these changes. When asked how technology has influenced purchasing trends, Jones replies, “It’s all about collaboration. We rarely sell anything that has to be bolted down, it’s just not conducive anymore. Chrome books hugely changed the way students learn in the classroom as well, so now we have data carts for charging, smart board televisions and the analog whiteboards for content sharing.” In our industry, a successful project can be measured in many different ways, but in education, the success can often times be a little more tangible. Jones says, “When we start a project, we usually walk through the classrooms while they are in use and full of students. When the project is finished and we walk back through the space to see the students using the new furniture and spreading out and collaborating, you can really see the excitement they have for learning and that’s how I know it was a job well done.”

Mater Dei High School is one of California’s oldest and most competitive Catholic high schools. The school, located in Santa Ana, was established in 1950 with just over 100 students. It now has close to 2,200 and is one of the largest Catholic schools in the nation. Mater Dei prides themselves on excellent academics, athletics and their beautiful campus. However, after over 65 years and countless students passing through, the faculty decided that the school was in need of some aesthetic upgrades.

completed in 2016. For the Athletic Center, Tangram provided new Steelcase Answer workstations to replace the bulky, outdated desks that previously existed in the space. The new workstations were smaller than the old ones, but much more functional and, additionally, the downsize made room for other collaborative spaces as well. The team also added a large lounge area with Coalesse sofas and chairs for the athletes to gather and socialize in between class or practice.

Over the past several years, Tangram has worked on many projects with Mater Dei to revamp the campus. Most recently was the redesign of their Athletic Center,

Collaboration is always necessary in any project, however, with the Athletic Center, it was absolutely the key to success. The teamwork between three of Tangram’s

divisions, Flooring, Technology, and Furniture to conquer the design challenges throughout the space was imperative. The flooring team framed additional walls, ran electrical and lighting and sourced and installed all new Shaw carpeting. Tangram Technology was brought in to run cabling throughout the area. The furniture team specified and sourced all the necessary pieces to revitalize the space. The result is a beautifully designed hub where students, parents and coaches alike can meet comfortably.

The Wallis Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California is one of the nation’s most well-renowned schools of its type. Widely recognized as leaders in their field, the school needed a space to match the caliber of their faculty and students.

create a space that fostered a ‘village square’ type of environment. The key to providing the faculty and students with all the different spaces desired was to specify furniture that was flexible, easily reconfigurable and complemented the aesthetic of the architecture.

Tangram partnered with Harvey Ellis Devereaux to create a space that provided the hall’s vast demographic with variety and choice to encourage collaboration and cultivate an environment where the convergence of public, instructional, research and production spaces leads to new and unexpected ideas. The school’s goal for the design, inspired by Wallis Annenberg’s commitment to openness, transparency and technology, was to eliminate the barriers that prevented random interactions and cross-collaboration and instead

The five floor, 88,000 square foot space consists of classrooms, laptop lounges, collaborative areas, a newsroom, faculty offices and multi-use spaces. For all private offices, Steelcase Flex Frame and Leap task chairs were used. Flex Frame’s functional surfaces and modular components are great for accommodating future growth or changes. Akira tables and Kart chairs were used as solutions for all student classrooms. Additionally, Campfire tables, FrameOne benching, SW-1 tables and chairs were used throughout

the hall in different areas to create several multi-use spaces. Steelcase Cachet chairs were also provided for seating in the newsroom and production areas. The result of the project was a beautiful, high-tech, modern building with various flexible, functional spaces. “Just as communication is at the center of modern life, USC Annenberg is at the center of communication and journalism—and at the center of campus!” says Dean Ernest J. Wilson III. The heart and soul of Annenberg is the ability to merge old with new and traditional with experimental to create something entirely different for all sharing the passion of journalism.

Before the remodel in Spring of 2016, Tangram’s training and large meeting room was at the back of our warehouse, and while it was functional, it lacked a coherent plan for Audio/Visual and different seating options (plus it’s at least a five mile walk). Steelcase’s research around pedagogy has revealed the link between effective teaching/learning and the concepts that comprise a LearnLab (namely, multiple screens that reinforce the content from the instructor, as well as seating and table options that allow a space to easily flow between didactic, small team-based activities, large team-based activities, and training). These concepts are incredibly important to our clients in the educational communities, and increasingly

38

important to corporate clients as well. Internally, we know that a strong culture around training and learning relates directly to cognitive well-being, and subsequently, our bottom-line results. We also realized that given its location, our previous training center didn’t connect people with the culture or the amenities of the office. Steelcase had already built a small LearnLab space in their new showroom. Our goal was to expand on their layout to accommodate our own headcount needs and also tell Tangram Technology’s story through the A/V in the space. Tangram Academy now suits our many needs for all-hands and training meetings, but also doubles as a highly effective space for smaller meetings using convertible Verb and Node

product. The A/V systems include state-of-the art displays from our primary technology partners and sound masking in the ceiling to help cancel the buzz created by large groups. This space is incredibly effective for us simply because it allows our office to now service every single meeting need within the two floors. This being one of the many elements of why Tangram was awarded with a 2016 REmmy Award for Most Innovative Project in the less than 50,000 square foot category. Contact us to book a tour today!
