It’s ten years ago and you’re rummaging through your work bag— what do you see? The first iPhone had just been released, cloud computing was in its early days and remote working still truly meant working from a home office that was equipped with standard office essentials. As one can imagine, today looks different. Our bags are packed with nearly everything we need to accomplish our daily tasks. Phones and tablets allow us to stay connected with coworkers and projects, video conferencing opens the door to effective out-of-office communication, and a coffee shop can be just as successful as an office for productivity. Bottom line, technology has changed the way we work. Today, work happens faster and in more places as developing technologies offer variety and mobility to a growing community of creatives. And as the dividing lines between departments and tasks are blurred, the desire for flexibility and comfort in the office drives a shift towards informal spaces that offer more than the traditional deskand-chair combination. The office is evolving into a destination dually designed for collaboration and productivity in order to effectively support the varied tasks and personality of the workforce— thus, turning a workspace into a company’s physical representation of culture and brand. To adapt to this shift in workspace goals, companies are increasingly shifting their office design towards a more residential feel, incorporating

the comforts of home or a favored local coffee shop. What this means for the end user is an increased level of choice and customization in order to achieve a truly unique workplace. In response to this trend, Tangram has gone from representing around 250 manufacturers to over 1000 different lines in order to maximize options and meet the needs of any and every company personality, culture and aesthetic. Puzzle was specially created to showcase some of our favorite manufacturers and the newest products they are creating today. Curated by our talented ancillary specialists, we hope they inspire, motivate and activate you the way they do us. Because it is through these pieces that we have the ability to reinvent the workplace and redefine what it means to be there.

Sincerely,

Paul Randall Smith Chief Marketing Officer

The Wide World of Loose Furniture Recalibrating our Approach to Ancillary Furniture Curation

I want my office to look like this page I saw on Pinterest. The space needs to look more residential and eclectic. Have you seen the Soho House? Why can’t I just use the same chairs from Restoration Hardware that I use at home?

The past five years have seen a rapid shift in the design preferences of corporate clients. Empowered by websites that make the envisioning of design options possible (e.g., Pinterest, Houzz, etc.) and fed by the ongoing trend of promoting “residential” qualities within a workspace, clients are increasingly seeking solutions outside of established channels. As contract furniture manufacturers adapt to this trend with new product and material introductions, products from online/retail/ boutique (ORB) outlets are increasingly requested, specified and implemented. This trend is welcome in that it allows for greater eclecticism and texture within corporate spaces. At the same time, it presents a unique (but not insurmountable) challenge to all of the key members of a project team. Our collective thinking – developed through years of working with contract and semi-contract vendors – must be recalibrated so that we can design and manage better together. Importantly, our dialogue with clients needs to evolve, so that they can understand that what they may consider a “simple online order” or “15 minutes on Pinterest” is not a substitute for professionally administered procurement and implementation or interior design, respectively. When evaluating movable furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF+E) from online, retail and boutique sources, consider the following: Architects and Designers Design firms often work more, not less, when specifying ORB products for several reasons. Unlike with contract furniture, there is little to no established market representation to assist with specifications. Therefore, the influence of the design firm can’t be leveraged to drive vendor performance with regard to pricing, lead time and warranty. In addition, samples of product and material are often not readily available and are typically not stocked in a design library. Contacting the vendor through its website, main office or email can be challenging as compared to typical contract sources. Given these issues, clients and designers are often asked to make selections without adequate collateral, leading to a protracted selection process or a dispute when items do not meet their expectations. Clients, not understanding these potential problems, wrongly conceive of the specification process for ORB items as easier, not harder. “Shopping” is familiar to them and not seen as an activity requiring professional oversight and assistance. Clients who find and suggest ORB items themselves are not aware of

the necessary follow-up work required to specify the product, coordinate it with interior finishes, and work with the vendor and dealer for procurement and implementation. Dealers Dealers also typically expend more resources when specifying ORB products due to a number of factors. Reliable manufacturer representation and support is highly variable and providerdependent. The dealer’s influence as a long-term business partner to the manufacturer is not as easily leveraged, making it harder for sticky discussions around shipping damage, warranty and repairs to get “unstuck”. Also, warranties are weaker in general for ORB products when compared to contract-grade providers. Clients might experience low first cost, but will pay for time and materials more frequently during the lifespan of the product. Lead times for ORB items are highly variable, and freight carriers’ standards for timeliness and performance vary more widely as compared to contract manufacturers. ORB vendors typically require 100% payment up front. This practice negatively affects cash flow, and is a major constraint for smaller, more boutique dealers. As mentioned above, samples are often not readily available or stocked in a design library. Vendors such as Overstock and One Kings Lane do not necessarily keep running inventory of product. As the name suggests, Overstock sells a fixed amount of a particular product and then discontinues selling that product. This practice creates obvious continuity issues for clients. Project Managers Project managers should also understand several key issues. ORB products can offer attractive cost or aesthetic alternatives to contract lines, and in many cases are viable and worthwhile. However, in many cases quality, lead time and product inventory continuity are highly variable. Warranty, representation and follow-up capabilities of the vendor are typically more limited than with contract goods. The complexities of specifying, ordering and implementing the product should not be short-sold to the client when discussing the corresponding design fees and dealer markups. Design firms and dealers should be held to the same high standards for execution, but with a nuanced understanding of the issues as described above. The bottom line? When all the players on a workspace design project are in tune and understand the value each plays, there is a much higher probability that the expectations of the client will be met. Tight collaboration is critical to meeting those expectations for cost, quality and timeliness. That includes when and when not to specify ORB items that may look great, but are problematic to procure and won’t stand the test of time. Steelcase SILQ BY JAMES LUDWIG

The SILQ chair is a breakthrough in seating design. Its innovative materiality is both mechanism and artistry, and delivers a personal experience by responding to the unique movements of your body.

Innovating to Reimagine Seating: James Ludwig Q+A Tesla changed how we drive. Apple changed how we listen to music. Now, an innovation in materials science will change how we sit. Steelcase is introducing SILQ™ — a breakthrough in seating design that replaces the machinery typically found in office seating with a simple system. When James Ludwig, vice president of Global Design & Engineering for Steelcase, first sketched the concept for what later became SILQ, he sought something that acted more like an organism than a machine. He envisioned a chair that married visual artistry with a responsive material and an intuitive performance.

At the time of his initial sketch, technology and materials science hadn’t advanced far enough to allow his vision to become reality. Now, Ludwig’s design and engineering team has innovated to create a new material and process allowing them to share this aspirational design with the world. Ludwig joined 360 to tell us more about what led to the innovations behind SILQ.

Puzzle : Task Chairs + Desking

360: What is it about SILQ that makes it so unique? JL: The way it’s shaped, the way it performs and what it’s made out of are inseparable. To me, there’s a certain magic there. I find this to be the pinnacle of what design and engineering can do together. Typical task chairs designed for people who need support at a desk all day have hundreds of parts. SILQ has 30. The idea of driving all of our complex motion into a simple design makes it move more like an organism. We took cues from biology. It’s intuitive. So, when you sit down, it adjusts to you. It moves the way you move. It’s tailored to respond to all the inputs you give it by simply sitting in SILQ. It’s like it knows you. We wanted to create a movement and a ride that was not just simple, but really countered people’s notions that they could feel good without thinking about it. There’s nothing to adjust on SILQ except height. 360: What inspired the first sketch of what is now SILQ? JL: The intuition that led to the original sketch was really a design and engineering challenge. We were in search of über simplicity — replacing the machinery with more of an organism. But, we didn’t want to just cover up the mechanism or hide it, we wanted to eliminate it. We wanted the material to become the mechanism. At the time of the idea, technology and materials science just weren’t there yet. It wasn’t feasible, so the project sat on the shelf. Then, we began work to understand carbon fiber. And, we were able to launch the LessThanFive Chair which pushes the boundaries of material properties around lightness and stiffness. I started thinking about the other properties of carbon fiber, namely used in the paralympic sprinters leg — which is the ultimate in durability, flexibility and responsiveness. I talked to my chief engineer — who is absolutely brilliant — and we agreed to pick the idea back up that has now become SILQ.

We kept pushing ourselves. Our engineers and designers have never worked more closely together. The people making the prototypes worked adjacent to our project room and the team met every morning for months. There was no passing the baton back and forth. The team was there together, solving problems as they came up. It was a more agile way of problem solving for us and it worked. We were willing to take risks and create things we previously thought were not possible. 360: SILQ is being offered in carbon fiber and this new high-performance polymer you invented. How did you innovate to create this new material? JL: Carbon fiber is a premium material. After our team solved the design and engineering challenge with carbon fiber, I went back to them and asked them to create a version that was more accessible. After a lot of work, the team created a version that achieved that vision. What’s amazing is that our engineering team invented a new material, a high-performance polymer, using our new process that’s patent-pending. It embodies the qualities of carbon fiber and makes SILQ available on a mass scale. In addition to the material, our team also invented the process for making the chair which is why SILQ is the intersection of the visual language, the performance language and the material composition to create something brand new. 360: Will your experience creating SILQ change how you approach projects in the future? JL: SILQ is really the beginning of a chapter in which we are able to achieve things we have not imagined before. Science and technology are augmenting human creativity and accelerating innovation. Creating the conditions for curiosity and rewarding those behaviors lead to breakthroughs and discoveries. SILQ is just the start. A true innovation is when you solve something and people say, “I didn’t know I wanted that…but, yes, I want that.” It solves a problem and removes friction from their lives.

360: How did your team work on this project to invent something completely new? JL: There’s so much discussion right now about how to help people be more creative and innovative. We had the benefit of having the permission to experiment, fail and learn. We had to build and break constantly. Our small team had the time and resources to explore.

Saatchi & Saatchi Why a Chinese Dim Sum Table Belongs in an Advertising Agency

Staying true to the integrity of the design while creating a functional space for employees is always a challenge, but this project is proof that, when done right, amazingly stunning results are possible.

Tangram Lookbook : Guest Chairs

In June 2016, Tangram Studio, Tangram’s custom furniture division, partnered with Loescher Meachem Architects to create a custom workspace for prominent global advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi. The agency has over 6,500 employees in 67 countries. The strategic decision to open a new office in Dallas came about as a result of their partnership with automotive giant and one of their largest clients, Toyota. Residing in the McKinney & Olive tower in one of uptown Dallas’ most up and coming areas, the company occupies approximately 50,000 square feet and houses three different companies throughout the sixth and seventh floor of the building: Saatchi & Saatchi, Team One and Conill's Housewarming.

Tangram Studio collaborated with Los Angeles design firm, Loescher Meachem Architects, to ensure that the feel of the space matched the company’s cool, vintage and eclectic vibe. Through preliminary meetings with Saatchi & Saatchi and LMA, Studio created a comprehensive workstation concept inspired by a traditional Chinese dim sum table. The round shape of the table allows employees to collaborate and communicate easily

and without sightline impediments. The tables were designed to be multi-functional and accommodate seating for up to six people depending on the task at hand. Similar to a dim sum table where the middle is a rotating disc, Studio created a raised tier in the center of the workstations for decorative accents. All power and data management was engineered in a circular shape underneath the desks feeding into the center opening on the table for a clean look. The full design scope of the project included 24 of these round workstations, 48 conference tables, 84 collaborative bullpen areas and two reception desks. With the use of typically residential elements, custom wall paper, and vintage treasures combined with modern influences, the completed space is diverse, beautiful and highly functional.

Tangram Studio is honored to have worked with Saatchi & Saatchi and LMA to bring this project from dream to reality. Staying true to the integrity of the design while creating a functional space for employees is always a challenge, but this project is proof that, when done right, amazingly stunning results are possible.
