LETTER FROM JOE Although it may be shocking, selling office furniture wasn’t exactly my childhood dream; I was thrown into the furniture industry by chance. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major in chemistry and math, but after college, I became immersed in the industry and it quickly became my passion. Since the time that Jack and I took over a struggling company in 2002, Tangram has grown to be the largest dealership in Southern California with almost 300 people and generating over $150 million in revenue every year. There’s not much else, other than maybe my kids, that makes me prouder than what we continue to achieve here. This industry fits me, but it’s extremely complex and most people really don’t understand it. When asked to describe what Tangram does, a large percentage would say “sell office furniture” and sure, of course, we do, but chalking up the entire process to “selling office furniture” certainly does not do Tangram justice. I think most of my staff would agree that selling chairs isn’t really what gets our blood flowing. What does is when I can walk into a client’s finished space and see that their culture, their brand, and their values are now fully integrated with the way that they work; that’s what I love. Your office is an extension of your brand, it’s a tool that can be used to increase productivity, employee engagement and ultimately, your bottom line. Tangram doesn’t just sell office furniture; we create environments that enable your company to thrive. I hope that this lookbook helps you understand who Tangram is and why I’m so passionate about this company and this industry. Thank you for taking the time to read it. Go Blue!

-Joe Lozowski, CEO

CYLANCE If you’ve been around Tangram the last six months, there’s a decent chance you’ve heard about or seen the recently completed remodel of the Santa Fe Springs headquarters. “We realized last year that the design of the space hasn’t really changed in almost a decade. We saw this as a huge opportunity to really practice what we preach,” says Nick Meter. The ultimate decision to remodel Tangram’s Santa Fe Springs office was made after reviewing research conducted over the

14

past three years on how employees work well and don’t work well in the space – collaboratively, individually, with technology, without technology, etc… Nick states, “Not only can we reinforce this research to our clients who come to see us, but we can also reinforce it to ourselves. We’re now able to recognize and capitalize on the same value that we provide the marketplace. Tangram’s employees have been enlightened because we now see not what we’ve been missing, but instead, the opportunity to work more productively and contribute to bettering the organization.” Nick continues,

“We’re really excited about the feedback thus far.” Nick smiles and concludes, “Now when people ask, ‘What is a Tangram?’, we can actually show them. This space is a Tangram, puzzle pieces in forms of business units, clients, vendors and employees, fitting together to create this beautiful product.”

CIM GROUP

Kennedy Wilson is a global real estate investment company that owns, operates, and invests in real estate on their own and through their investment management platform. Tangram, along with Wolcott, and LE Waters, received an IIDA Calibre Award in May 2016 for Best Workspace of a Large Size for their work on this project. Andra Kaleps led the Tangram team, in close collaboration with Wolcott, to revamp the existing 60,000 square foot

18

office. Kennedy Wilson sought to create a more high-end, retail-like work environment and also bring the outside elements in. Tangram and collaborative partners flawlessly achieved the aesthetic with stunning marble-topped tables, rooftop and courtyard lounges and organic, yet sophisticated, pieces outfitted throughout the space.

just hit send Interview with Mitchel Zelinger It doesn’t take long to realize that even though Mitchel has called Southern California home since his college days, he never really left New York. He sits down in a chic office chair, blue jeans, long sleeve crew neck and perfectly polished dress shoes. Zelinger cracks a quick joke, smiles, and asks in a way only a New Yorker could, “So what are we doing here today?” A legitimate question as Mitchel’s crazy schedule has him navigating all over Southern California daily. The conversation today is about how Mitchel learned to develop relationships, and where he sees the next generation of business leaders needing guidance. Zelinger began his career working with his father, Hugo Zelinger who owned a furniture refurbishing company, On-Site Fabricare. After graduating Cal State Northridge in 1985, he invited his marketing professor, Bill Crookston, (who has since become a lifelong mentor and friend of Mitchel’s) to help him understand how to grow the family business. “He was the doctor, and we were the patient!” And the Dr. told the patient that Mitchel needed to be the company’s evangelist- make friends and leave the operations to his dad. “He taught me that business starts with seven touches and you can’t do all seven in one day or even one week; things take time.” Zelinger drives home his point with a story of a customer who started with a cup of coffee, then three weeks later another cup of coffee and then dinner, and now one of the largest contracts held by the Tangram organization, but what really gets Mitchel excited is that they’ve grown so close that, “his kids call me uncle”. Mitchel’s goal in mentoring the incoming millennial workforce is to “eliminate the ‘let’s discuss’ mindset and turn it into ‘let’s do’.” He explains, “we’re in the business to provide a horizontal surface to write on and a vertical surface to define the space;” So what’s left? Relationships. He emphasizes, “seven touches, all soft, not rushed, and just right.” The ‘business contact’ then becomes a lifelong family friend. Mitchel goes on, “Work and life is one in the same for me. I genuinely love these people. It was only natural that I found my wife, Ingrid through what I do.” “Your net worth is equal to your network,” and the secret to achieving the network is something that anyone who’s spent any time with Mitchel has heard on repeat, “do one more thing, every day.” He explains, “If our competition is starting and ending their day at the same time as us, but each individual at Tangram just did one more thing, there’s no way they would be able to keep up with us.” Mitchel smiles again, “So are we done here or what?” And there you have it, Mitchel Zelinger, a force to be reckoned with and one of Tangram’s finest.

CYLANCE At the beginning of January 2016, Tangram Studio completed the custom furniture and flooring installation of the redesigned Ice House, the Beverly Hills Headquarters of Live Nation Worldwide, historically named after its original 1920’s use. The Ice House is four floors of approximately 45,000 square feet of office space. It was built in 1925 for manufacturing and storing ice, but was converted to office space in the mid-1990’s; Live Nation has been the tenant for the last 10 years. Tangram’s custom furniture division, lead by Charlotte Wiederholt, collaborated with Linda Gross at Live Nation

34

to ensure that the feel of the space matched the company’s vivacious culture and vintage vibe. Tangram Studio also joined forces with Stirworks, Inc., a height-adjustable desk manufacturer, to design and produce more than 300 height adjustable custom workstations (featured on pg 27) that would match the industrial feel of The Ice House. “I saw Stir’s analytics of Live Nation’s workstation usage and just last month the company burned an additional 800,000 calories just from utilizing the sit/stand capabilities of their desks. It’s fantastic to see a desk contributing to the health and wellness of the employees,” Charlotte explained, which was the overall goal of Michael Rapino, CEO of Live

Nation, who is viewed as a tech-savvy, health advocate in the workplace. “The best part of this project - of any project - is working with the clients to solve the disparity between the way they view their company’s culture and the way they view their workspace. Connecting the two and negotiating the hurdles that come along the way is my favorite. The Live Nation Ice House is a great example of why I do what I do and I feel very lucky to be able to do what I love. Linda was immensely apart of the design process and a dream to collaborate with,” Charlotte concluded.
