Designed For How We Work. Our Partners

The inspiration behind the re-design was the geographic area where Tangram operates. According to Susie Tashiro, “Tangram services Southern California. The main design idea represents a duality to capture the energy and color in our vibrant atmosphere. We [Southern California] are famed for our sunny weather and dramatic Pacific Coastline, but we are a community where one enjoys the outdoors as much as the indoors. The design is inspired by the unique lifestyle that is made possible because of our location, surrounded by beaches, mountains, lakes and deserts. Tangram does not have an outdoor space so Susie helped to bring the elements inside through furniture, wall graphics, and flooring selections.

The Floor Plan

A PALETTE OF PLACES + POSTURE

“The office of the future has more to deal with the people than with any other subject matter...”

“When we went to design our office of the future. We were thinking first and foremost of the people and how they work together in the space. We wanted to create an organic design that supported the way the people in our organization work and gave them palette of place, palette of posture, sitting and standing and moving around, and purpose that would inspire them; to us if we inherently did all of those things that would be the office of the future.” Nick Meter Director, Customer Experience

01 RECEPTION GROUND FLOOR

PREVIOUS STATE: What does this company do? One of our architect friends wrote this question with a photo background of our reception area. Tangram’s reception area had all of the necessities (higher end furniture, nice millwork, some digital signage), but no punch and no signal to a visitor that we are experts in the crafting of great spaces. OUR GOAL: It’s difficult to communicate “we sell furniture flooring architecture and technology. Also, services” in a literal way in a reception area. Maybe that’s why we hadn’t done it already. Recognizing this, our goal was to create an undeniably cool space while subtly dropping in the right furniture/tech/finishes- something that created an experience and elevated a guest’s immediate impression of our work. There would be millwork, yes, but it would incorporate innovative and unexpected materials. There would be signage, yes, but it would be backlit and dropped against a plant wall, for a chic Vegas hotel feel. There’d be digital signage, and also seating… but it would be monolithic and simple, without the magazines on the table that give the feeling of a waiting room. Finally, the existing architecture would be woken up with color and texture and Studio would be better separated, so that the sense of enclosure and place was heightened. The space would be large and impressive and voluminous and cool, and just minimal enough that it led to curiosity about what came after. RESULT: The Concierge space is meant to be a simple launch point to the rest of the space, while still eliciting a first “WOW” from the client. The intent is for the host to greet and refresh (beverages/restroom) their audience, while also beginning a conversation seated around the media:Scape lounge. A cutting-edge display solution from Tangram Tech runs video that is visually engaging. The plant wall, reception station and signage convey a hotel-like experience, and the plant wall in particular (synthetic, requiring no water, made by hand by our architect) is a great conversation starter.

02 TUNNEL GROUND FLOOR

PREVIOUS STATE: Previously, this area did very little for us. It was narrow, poorly lit and the chairs lined up on one side combined with vague, cheesy artwork across the walls, it appeared to be a poorly marketed retail store. OUR GOAL: Widen the space (by removing the chairs) to make the walk more open and breathable. Add graphics and pictures that tell a story consistent with our brand; where we came from, what we do, where we’re going. Eliminate the retail feel of the chair gallery and convert that space to something meaningful. Create a line of sight to something memorable. RESULT: The tunnel is now a part of a scenic route, not the scary, dark road that you just want to get through. By eliminating the chairs, we’ve widened the space and created a more inviting and functional area. The graphics and pictures on the north side of the tunnel are visually interesting and highlight our areas of expertise. The quiet spaces, which occupy the former chair gallery are colorful, functional (interviews, private phone calls, heads-down work) and create a more purposeful transition into the workspace. 03 WORK CAFÉ OUR GOAL

PREVIOUS STATE: This space was occupied by our design library and mail area, which surrounded a conference room. Similar to libraries in schools and law firms, design libraries have been continually affected by the world’s rapid shift to everything web-based and the increasing acceptance of “virtual” libraries. Over time, the frequency of use of our physical design library has significantly diminished. Subsequently, the majority of the valuable area around the conference room was vastly underutilized. Additionally, our previous options for cafes were unappealing. Employees had the choice of a cramped nook with a combined eight seats, or a larger area upstairs that was unoccupied and unlively most of the time. We identified that an alternative space to work, mingle and take a breather was vital to our organizational health. OUR GOAL: Our goal became to activate the space and use its impressive architectural surroundings to our advantage. Our first approach was to simply look at converting the area to functional workspace. This idea was practical, but not meaningful. After considering other shortcomings in the current space which needed to be addressed, one became very obvious: the lack of a “hub”. 91% of employees cite the importance of a place to recharge and reconnect, but on average, 41% say their space doesn’t have such a place… and our space was part of that stat. Research also indicates that our employees spend at least 30% of their day working away from their desks. Taking these and other learnings from the Steelcase WorkCafé in Grand Rapids, we set out to make this area the single most desirable place to hang out, work, socialize, and, most importantly, build trusting relationships. RESULT: The Tangram WorkCafé is all about making connections. With space for over 50 occupants at one time, we can now support the office headcount with a singular destination to meet, eat, and socialize. Our research shows a direct correlation between choice and control and user well-being. Not only do we have a more functional space, but we have options for different postures: a relaxed banquette option that doubles for team meetings, an informal picnic table, individual tables, large bistro-height dining, etc… We wanted to extend the meaning of well-being in the workplace to food options as well so we partnered with SnackNation who supplies us with a monthly cache of health-conscious snack options that are complimentary for our employees and guests.

Large screens in the center of the eating area allow for entertainment, special announcements, and also set the stage for vibrant all-hands meetings where employees can participate from various locations including the mezzanine and ramp. In the center of the WorkCafé, the hub of the hub, if you will, is our DesignLab. The lab is intended to be a creative harbor for clients and designers to meet with us to discuss the key elements of their projects. The combination of multiple A/V inputs and prominently displayed material samples allows us to be fully connected to our work and able to best help our clients make “one-stop” decisions. Finally, the WorkCafé is the heartbeat of our brand and culture. Stunning graphics from Designtex create the connection to our company’s Southern California heritage and broad geography. The residential and eclectic aesthetic is true to TANGRAM- creative and unexpected, yet still purposeful and meaningful.

04 TECHNOLOGY OUR GOAL

Our AV integration team, Tangram Technology, is a compiled of engineers, designers, salespeople, project managers, administration professional and executive leadership. Each person had different needs and requirements for their workspace to best solve their daily working needs. This was accomplished by creating an open ‘tech-forward’ floor plan that allowed for basic storage within the station as well as desk space for large dual monitor displays. Additionally, a large document storage center was designed adjacent to the project managers and designers to allow for paper and file management on large projects. Finally a custom-made standing height table was crafted to support large plan review and CAD drawing edits that the team can collaborate around freely.

05 FLOORING GROUND FLOOR

Our Flooring team’s space may be the most calculatedly designed area of any group at Tangram. Given the specific requirements that were set forth by this group, we asked them to pair with Tangram Studio to provide a tailored solution. Their environment is a reflection of the way they work. Outside salespeople and project managers are arranged along the exterior in benching-like workstations. They interface with and are supported by an internal team that works in the interior workspace. The way the stations were designed and oriented allow for easy sightlines and communication, making this space perfect for the fluid interactions that need to happen in this department. In addition to collaboration within the workspaces, group collaboration is also readily supported. At the end of one area, Studio designed a run-off table that allows for small group meetings as well as their weekly all-hands “Teper Tuesday” meetings.

Storage and materials are the major focus for Flooring. Material submittals and binders and continuously being crafted and sent to contractors and clients. To enhance the way this work is done, Studio outfitted a small enclosed area (that was previously unused) with a mobile project table and massive amounts of sample and binder storage. A Forbo cutting surface allows them to size and format materials for delivery, while powder-coated whiteboards help the team track tasks and pin up samples for review. Studio also created sample storage for broadloom, carpet tile and rolled plans within the personal workstations. Finally, the stations were designed with a variety of access points for power and data, enhancing connectivity for both mobile and resident workers. Studio unified these different concepts by using a simple palette of woodgrain laminate, veneer, plywood edging, hotrolled steel and felt. The steel leg details are unique and give the area a wonderful balance of an industrial, but organic feel. The workstations have a very residential and natural appearance which is complimented by custom leather pulls.

06 OPERATIONS GROUND FLOOR

Our operations team is true resident workers as well, like customer service and accounting. Similar to accounting, the previous operations’ work environment worked fairly well for them. It created a bullpen for the schedulers and service experts to communicate and collaborate among themselves. For the most part, the storage and technology management was adequate to the requirements. We’ve brought the design of the area up to modern speed by lowering the horizon lines and removing the overhead storage which was rarely used anyway. We’ve also planned the space to include the other operations employees who were previously separated from the rest of the team. Kathy, our Director of Operations, has a daily need for one-on-one conversations at her desk, so we’ve kept her station semi-private, yet still attached to the overall grouping. These stations are designed to finally bring together all of the experts who’s timely communication keeps our work in the field going smoothly.

07 CUSTOMER SERVICE GROUND FLOOR

Our customer service staff is situated in the middle of our floor plan, as they are at the center of our day to day work. Their centralized location is new to this group. They were previously spread between two floors, and had all manner of workstations, most of them were high-paneled and did not lend themselves to a collaborative work environment. Realizing that customer service was the epitome of our “resident workforce”, we wanted to create workstations that would support their work and workflow, while also giving them proximity to daylight, height-adjustability, and visibility to the rest of their peers and the other employees. Much of their work involves practical training and problem-solving, so the ability for users to sit or stand near one another’s work is critical. Technology management was also addressed. Most of the workstations include Steelcase’s new Ology table with integrated cord management. This creates a clean desktop and platform for our customer service staff to spread out their materials and keep our engines humming.

08 PROJECT MANAGEMENT GROUND FLOOR

Our project managers spend a large amount of their time in the field and they are all full-time users of mobile technology. When they are in the office, they are typically doing a certain set of tasks related to scheduling, team meetings, install prep, and punch list work. These tasks require larger areas for material layouts. Our workstations for project management were designed with an awareness of their workflow. The stations are located next to a plan layout area; each has desktop technology management and additional layout area. When they aren’t working at their desk or with plans, project managers are leading team meetings or working with operations or customer service. By locating those departments next to one another and adding an abundance of small enclave areas for team meetings, this area contains all the requirements for our project managers to do their best work in the space. 09 EXECUTIVE GROUND FLOOR

Visibility and transparency is part of our culture. Continuing with the idea of being part of the open plan workspace, our co-owners, Joe and Jack, have stayed in their previous location. Yet, they’ve traded their obsolete workstations for new Steelcase Elective Elements open-plan desks that are more real-estate efficient and supportive of the mobile technology that they too employ every day. Our CFO Nick now joins Joe and Jack in the same space as well, enclosed by Muraflex glass walls which are an industry leader for minimalist design and acoustic value. Nick’s office can also double as an extra conference room when he working in a different location. This flexibility of design is all about real estate efficiency and resonates well with clients still interested in private offices. Behind the executive desks is the revamped executive conference area, which offers more table seating than before, in a brighter and fresher space. The experience is supported by a user-friendly A/V setup. Creating an executive area that is open and accessible for everyone is one of the cornerstones of our culture and has never been better expressed than it is now.

11 SALES GROUND FLOOR

A modest amount of storage is available at each station, and an even greater amount is available in a nearby archive area. This storage solution works for our sales staff because most of our salespeople take their work with them and many keep all of their records digitally. The sales workstations, composed of Steelcase FrameOne and c:Scape, are meant to support mobile technology, one-on-one collaboration and allow for maximum visibility to other employees in the space. In the case that a salesperson needs privacy or to take an important call, three quiet spaces are strategically located within 80 feet of the workspace. The quiet spaces are comprised of glass on the north and south sides to allow for natural light from the exterior windows to flow unimpeded back to the design and sales areas. Access to natural daylight has been proven to enhance employee satisfaction and overall productivity, and is therefore a cornerstone design principle of most “offices of the future”.

12 DESIGN GROUND FLOOR

While our designers are also highly mobile workers, the technical nature of their work demands a healthy portion of heads-down work in the office. Previously, our designers had very large stations (greater than 70 square feet on average), which were meant to support layouts of materials, printed spec guides, desktop PC’s, and large-scale drawings. Times have changed and so have the requirements for space within our design department as “paperless” and “mobile” have increasingly become the key words of a designer’s work day. Hence, we’ve densified the space and used Steelcase Series Height-Adjustable Benching to allow our designers choice and control over their posture, enabling greater physical wellbeing and greater productivity. Dividers between users allow for a modest amount of visual privacy. Storage is more carefully allocated to support our resident designers, and (for the first time) our design library is located directly adjacent to the sales and design teams, who constitute at least 95% of the library’s usage.

13 MARKETING GROUND FLOOR

Marketing is a smaller team of highly creative, collaborative, and deadline-sensitive individuals. Given the project-based nature of their work, we situated the marketing staff together on one platform, using a product from Vitra’s G-Star line. This retro aesthetic gives the marketing area a unique flavor and adds another unexpected, but purposeful element to the design. It also signals to our clients that while we believe office standards are appropriate, so too is a degree of workspace individualization; it helps increase a group’s satisfaction and sense of ownership/engagement. Adjacent to the marketing group is a “war room” where our “cramped and tired” cafe previously was. This spot is for the marketing group to pin up, lay out, and store all of the critical materials that they use to produce and collaborate. It also allows for a degree of Silicon Valley-esque whimsy that marketing departments love.

14 ACCOUNTING GROUND FLOOR

This was the easiest area to plan simply because the accounting department’s workstyle has changed less over time than other departments. Demands for paper layout, storage, and printing are still very much present and will likely not end soon. However, we took this opportunity to not only provide this group with an enhanced environment, but also contemplate a more upscale setting that would resonate with our professional services clients (Deloitte, Ernst & Young, BDO, etc). We built workstations that allowed for choice and control, with height adjustable tables and various forms of storage. The aesthetic is a contemporary and interesting using wood veneer products (Steelcase Answer and EE). Recognizing that professional services organizations require the same nearby collaborative and casual meeting areas, we added a “living room” at the end of the workstation cluster. This is meant to show how a marriage of formal and informal settings can enrich a space and create more opportunities for relaxation and collaboration.

GROUND FLOOR SYNOPSIS

PREVIOUS STATE: Our employees were spread across two floors inhibiting effective collaboration. Furthermore, the workspaces they were using were designed ten years prior, when most resident workers still had desktop computers, an overabundance of paperwork and filing, and desktop phones. Real estate efficiency was very poor, maybe not even a thought, and the there were little to no small or medium-sized meeting areas close to the workstations. Employees in complimentary departments and, sometimes even in the same department, were not placed near each other which caused communication barriers. Finally, old or obsolete furniture products were no longer telling a cutting-edge story. All of this added up to an urgent need to reorganize and redesign our workspaces. As noted when we started the tour, there are two ways to measure the net-positive effect of this renovation. The first is winning business. To that end, we feel confident that the progressive nature of the space and the inspiration it will evoke will positively affect our business opportunities. The second is user engagement. User engagement is the level of connection and ownership that employees feel to and in a company; its brand, its mission, its culture. Highly engaged employees are more productive, and enhance the bottom line. Lower engagement means lower productivity, more absenteeism, lower client satisfaction ratings, and certainly worse results to the bottom line. OUR GOAL: Our first order of business was to move everyone to one floor. We believed that great user engagement would only happened if everyone was experiencing the same outstanding space together. We also noticed that after the sales meeting on the third Monday of every month, energy and activity in the office was always higher. Why? Because more people were in the office! This led us to the idea that density could create energy every day of the week and lead to a stronger sense of emotional and cognitive well-being as a result. Lastly, we needed to put entire departments together and place complementary departments next to one another, promoting the sharing of knowledge and experience.

01 START UP LAB MEZZANINE

PREVIOUS STATE: What a mess! Sprawling across our mezzanine floor was a well intended but haphazardly designed healthcare zone, which drifted into a better-designed, but underutilized, cafe area. OUR GOAL: As we re-planned our healthcare space and added Tangram Academy, we saw an opportunity to use the leftover space in a creative and inspirational way. The space will also incorporate two hallmarks of spaces that support wellbeing, rejuvenation and recreation. RESULT: Taking cues from our many startup clients, we formulated a zone that offered all modes of working in a more carefree environment. We added a unique take on the ping-pong table, which since its introduction to SFS a few years ago, has been a huge hit. Our intention was to demonstrate that eclectic and unexpected furniture can still be planned and allocated to drive performance. It’s happening every day at startup companies across LA, so why not here? The previous cafe space will still serve as a cool spot for stand-up meetings, and perhaps the odd potluck or birthday lunch.

02 ACADEMY MEZZANINE

PREVIOUS STATE: Tangram’s training and large meeting room was at the back of our warehouse, and while it was functional, it lacked a coherent plan for Audio/Visual and different seating options (plus it’s at least a five mile walk).

OUR GOAL: Steelcase’s research around pedagogy has revealed the link between effective teaching/learning and the concepts that comprise a LearnLab (namely, multiple screens that reinforce the content from the instructor, as well as seating and table options that allow a space to easily flow between didactic, small team-based activities, large teambased activities, and training). These concepts are incredibly important to our clients in the educational communities, and increasingly important to corporate clients as well. Internally, we know that a strong culture around training and learning relates directly to cognitive well-being, and subsequently, our bottom-line results. We also realized that given its location, our previous training center didn’t connect people with the culture or the amenities of the office. Steelcase had already built a small LearnLab space in their new showroom. Our goal was to expand on their layout to accommodate our own headcount needs and also tell Tangram Technology’s story through the A/V in the space. RESULT: Tangram Academy now suits our many needs for all-hands and training meetings, but also doubles as a highly effective space for smaller meetings using convertible Verb and Node product. The A/V systems include state-of-the art displays from our primary technology partners and sound masking in the ceiling to help cancel the buzz created by large groups. This space will be incredibly effective for us simply because it allows our office to now service every single meeting need within the two floors.

03 HEALTH SPACE MEZZANINE

PREVIOUS STATE: As prior mentioned, our former healthcare space occupied half the mezzanine and arbitrarily morphed between waiting room, intake, nurse, doctor, and patient environments. There was no coherent story of how our healthcare experts are uniquely equipped to address the needs of hospitals and healthcare companies in a rapidly changing marketplace. OUR GOAL: Healthcare environments are changing, and fast. Patient feedback now increasingly affecting reimbursement and retention; therefore, well-designed spaces that create a more satisfying healthcare experience will bring better results for the people that run them. Additionally, there has been a shift in the environments where patients wish to be seen. Large populations of people are demanding a departure from the sterile and clinical feel to warm and residential surroundings. Many large-scale hospital networks, one of them being our largest customer, have explicitly stated that their design direction for future spaces will move towards offering a more boutique, residential vibe. With this in mind, our healthcare space had to feature these latest trends that will be the future for clinical design. RESULT: Greatly condensed from its previous state, Tangram Health now exhibits intent and consideration in its design and layout. An alternative take on the traditional waiting room leads into different settings that include patient rooms, nurse stations, etc‌
