GLOSSARY plot (n) criminal conspiracy sitter (n) someone who is having their portrait painted.
Guy Fawkes Night is an annual commemoration observed mainly in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived, people lit bonfires around London, and Parliament enforced an annual day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.
The gallery houses portraits of historically important and famous British people, selected on the basis of the significance of the sitter, not that of the artist. The collection includes photographs and caricatures as well as paintings, drawings and sculpture.
A Sunday morning tradition for many East Enders, Brick Lane market is a vast hotchpotch of stalls selling leather clothing, second-hand furniture and bric-a-brac. Here, second-hand stores and leather shops line the actual market itself, and hot dog stands compete for trade with the many cheap and cheerful Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants, trendy bars, and a famous 24-hour bagel shop.
When we went there in October everyone had a good time! The food has some similarities to Turkish and Middle Eastern food and is delicious. You can take your own wine!
