Weeks before the the student body at CETYS Preparatoria returned to classes to continue with the new semester the Principal Georgina Villalba with the help from others teachers decided to make some improvements in the school rules. This new conditions were communicated in all of the classrooms by the corresponding human development teacher. This new rules can be found in a document that is uploaded in the platform named Blackboard or at the web page of this institution. The first rule that was modified is in the chapter number two, which talks about the Educational Evaluation, in the 9th article which indicates that in case that a student requests evidence for a grade of 6 the Principal Office will give a non-official constancy with the corresponding grade. At CETYS the approbatory grade starts at 7, but at other schools 6 is still an acceptable score that is why the institution is giving away this documents which has no validation al CETYS. The second modification is also located at the second chapter and it talks about the formalities for the certification which are: to accredit all the subjects in the corresponding study plan, to fulfill all the requirements of the Scholar Service department and make payments. 1

Where most changes were made was at chapter number four, which belongs to disciplinary sanctions, first at article 44th which indicates that direct or indirect bullying, either in person or through electronic devices or social media, will be punished with a temporal suspension or deregistration. In the same article it points that electronic devices must be saved and off in areas where academic activities are developed and if this rule is broken the first time the Principal Office will keep the device for a week, and in a second occasion a written warning will be given. Also this article marks out that every student that enter to the campus driving must have a valid driving license and if not a temporal suspension will be given. There are also other two rules that are not in the document that talks about the correct way to use the uniform. The first one indicates that blue jeans should not be bent from the bottom part and the second points that the sweatshirt can only be wear in the classrooms and if the prefect see you with it during recess or other place that is not a classroom he has de chance to keep the garment for the rest of the day. CETYS is an institution that is characterized for having polite, responsible and disciplined students, that is why the rules are specific and the sanction may seem a little tough. This changes were made for a better behavior and scholar environment we just have to wait for the rules to make their job.

Not the

lobsters! One day, I went to Ensenada because of a school trip. We students had just traveled in a ship to see the migration of gray whales. Because this voyage lasted about 3 hours, we all were hungry, so we decided to go into a seafood restaurant. Everything was going good and everyone had already ordered their food, but a problem was that no one barely had the money to pay for what he was ordering. Then the fun began. I was sitting with some friends, Jorge, Alejandro, JosÊ, Miguel and more. Because of this we all were making jokes of each other. Alejandro had a girl he liked, so Jorge and Miguel decided to use a tortilla to draw a heart with ketchup, which they wanted to be delivered to her by a waiter. Alejandro fought in order to not have the tortilla sent, and this one finally broke. But then Jorge bought a soda and ordered the waiter to send it to Alejandro’s crush. She received it, thanked and embarrassed Alejandro. When the food was sent I received a big surprise. I had previously ordered a fried fish, which I confused with a fish fillet. Because of this, I ended up with a big fish that was fried. Everyone laughed at that, I found it hard to eat because of the ribs.

37

Then we made fun of Jorge. Previously, we all were talking about buying a lobster but agreed that we shouldn’t buy it since it was very expensive. So after this we all decided to play a prank with Jorge with the help of a waiter. We made him act as if Jorge had bought a lobster and there were no refunds. Jorge easily believed this and started to scream to everyone and tried to convince the waiter he never bought it. The waiter played his part and kept insisting that Jorge should pay the price since the lobster was already being prepared. When it looked as if Jorge was going to cry, we decided to stop the prank and tell Jorge that there was nothing to fear. He was still sad so he didn’t talk to everyone else much until we were back into the bus. Because of these events, we all managed to have a very funny dinner, which I would consider the funniest dinner I ever had even though I got the fried fish.

Genetically Modified Food

Did you know that genetically modified food occupied more than 181.5 million hectares in 2014 and that this number will most probably be beaten by the end of 2015? Mexican daily consumed food mainly consists of eggs, lemons, sugar, meat, tortillas, bread, and more. Most of these come from genetically modified plants, since big businesses that sell these products like Bimbo, Nesquick and Herdez among others use these in their merchandise. Also, the country which uses the most genetically modified food is the United States (US), with 69 million hectares. Meanwhile Mexico is at 16th place with 0.2 millions. This could seem a big difference, but not when we take into account that about 47% of Mexico’s food supplies come from other countries, which translates into great numbers of genetically modified food being imported to Mexico and consumed by its population, making this an important topic to talk about.

40

Genetically modified food is the one which have had their genes modified in a way which shouldn’t be possible to occur naturally. This process is used in order to give plants and therefore their products characteristics in favor of their survival and to increase their production. It also can help the farmers to take care of their crops more easily, and make these bring up the best product possible, since genetically modifying food also makes it more resistant to plagues, diseases and pesticides. Each day the people that oppose to the use of genetically modified food increases because of the negative effects of people’s health. Because of this, experts of the British Science Review evaluated 600 studies related to genetically modified food, and the results showed that each consumable product was safe. In the other hand, people who oppose genetically modified food talk about these results being false, with the argument that it is prohibited to independent researchers to make their own studies. 41

Independent from both of these arguments about genetically modified food damaging the human body, there have been cases about it damaging the food itself. One example of this is the decline of the natural corn in Mexico. This is because corn is an

easily

pollinized

crop,

so

farmers

who

own

plantations of corn have the risk of theirs being pollinized by genetically modified species of corn from another plantation even if each plantation is miles away from the other, creating the risk of natural corn disappearing in the future. In conclusion, genetically modified food has been a popular topic in the health and nutrition areas for a long time leading to these studies about it. But while not being able to do research on this, there hasn’t been confirmed a case in which genetically modified foods caused some kind of disease or malfunction in a human or an animal. But

while these foods could probably be bad for consumption, they provide a benefit for farmers that have stronger crops, but at the same time damage the natural resources we have today, the corn being an example of it.

New Advancements in Cave Mapping For archeologists, exploring caves has been always a difficult task because of many factors, including wilderness, lighting, unknown terrain, and more. Because of this, many scientists have tried to improve this experience for them, and because of this, the new Local Relief Models (LRM) have been put to use since years ago. This new technology has been improving in recent years, and since 2010 until this day, a new tool for these LRMs has been developing quickly. It’s called the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). This new tool is able to scan the surface of caves through the use of active remote sensing which has the ability to scan surfaces with high-frequency laser beams that are spawned from an aerial device such as a helicopter. The importance of this new LiDAR technology is that archeologists no longer need to risk themselves when exploring a cave for the first time, since they can get a map of the cave beforehand. Another advancement is that this tool works from a helicopter, so there is no need for a land device which could get damaged by the terrain, humidity and imperfections inside the cave (since there’s a risk of it falling). The only problems that could be found about this technology is the cost, which hasn’t been provided since the LiDAR is in development, but since we already know that a helicopter will be needed for this tool to work, we know that there’ll be lots of fuel spent because caves are mostly found at a large distance from urban spots.

43

Finally, I think that this new advancement in cave mapping will bring archeologists new, easier and safer ways to explore caves and other closed places, and that this technology will be seeing some use not just from archeologists, but from anyone that needs to check a territory without risking himself, like in a break-in done by police officers, for example.
