World-leading research We are constantly researching how the English language is used in everyday life. Authors, editors and lexicographers use unique tools such as the Cambridge English Corpus to inform our learning solutions.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is used the world over to describe language proficiency. Cambridge is a leading member of English Profile – a Council of Europe endorsed programme to describe how English maps to the CEFR – and so is the only publisher to truly understand how the CEFR works in English. To find out more about English Profile and how it helps us understand the CEFR for English, visit www.englishprofile.org Ordering for booksellers Please contact your local distributor or the Cambridge University Press office for advice or assistance. Cycling in Manchest er
Cycling Information
More and more Manc hester people are choos ing to cycle. It is a great way to get around – being healthy, environmentally friend ly, and affordable. More cycle journeys also mean s reduced traffic conge stion and cleaner air. It is one of the most sustainable modes of travel but whilst more people are taking it up it still only accounts for a small amount of commuting trips. To encourage more Manchester residents to consider cycling the Council is investing considerably in improved infrastructure for cyclis ts, both on and off-ro ad. Many journeys to work are ideal for cycling. If you live a reasonable distance from work (up to about five miles), you might find it possib le to cycle – even just once a week – which will benefi t both your health and the environment, whilst saving you money!

4 The journalist talks about people in India eating seasonally. With the variety of choice offered by supermarkets, it is often possible to buy produce out of season. Is this a good thing?
Picture A: air miles, seasonal produce, the buying power of supermarkets Picture B: shrink-wrapped, rubbish disposal, health implications
r Big supermarkets offer maximum diversity, but minimal flavour. r Local food producers do not get a fair deal from multinational companies. r There should be larger government subsidies for organic farming. r People should eat to live and not live to eat.
