Guide student behavior at start, easier to resolve problem before it escalates Be proactive in handling behaviors Rewards vs. punishment Explain to your administrators what you are doing - get them on your side Remember! "How is what you're doing going to help you be more effective as a teacher?". Classroom Management Tardies, mild disrepect, hw issues, dress code, not being prepared Office Referrals Fights, harassments, threats, bullying, when teacher feels like losing control "There's no outsourcing of your discipline problems!" Darren's Categories: Not following directions Tardies, Disrespect, Homework, Materials, Bathroom 1st 3 lessons Darren teaches every year (So little we can do in the classroom if they don't know these.) After each, go for their Buy In, by asking for reasons for that rule: what do they gain from this? Day 1 • How to listen when someone is speaking/relevance of listening • Stop what you are doing • Put pen or pencil down • Look at the person speaking • Hearing is passive; listening is active • Be still and quiet until the person is finished speaking Day 2
• How to get teacher's attention • Stop what you are doing • Raise your hand , he demonstrates different styles - what is best • Be still and quiet until called upon Day 3 • How to follow directions • Stop what your are doing • Listen to the directions • Raise your hand if you don't understand • Follow directions at teacher's signal Spreadsheet on clipboard to mark behaviors. Student's need to become aware of behaviors. Not private- students learn to be accountable Make students aware when you have recorded a student having a problem but move on (help kids identify behaviours; helps accountability; avoids power struggle) Reward weekly - 90-95% of students should be receiving rewards. If not may need to reteach lesson. Student out after 3 marks- not punished, just don't receive reward. Vary the rewards Sample Rewards: Free choice on computer, candy, social time 5 min, pj day, lunch in classroom. Frown Friday - sent to another classroom Give mark and move on. Don't remind/warn/lecture only 1 reminder. "Next time I see you doing ..., a mark" - be consistant Nip disrespect in the bud. "Just kidding" Doesn't matter. (Not!) Be consistent. Be consistent. Be consistent. =================================================================== Presenter contact info: Darren Barkett important Simplek12 links: Collaborize Classroom (free online learning platform) http://simplek12.com/tlc/classroom/ More Free SimpleK12 Webinars http://simplek12.com/tlc/webinars SimpleK12 Blog- http://blog.simplek12.com/ SimpleK12 YouTUbe Channel- http://www.youtube.com/simplek12team Past SimpleK12 webinar Backchannels http://simplek12.titanpad.com/2 - Kerpoof Webinar http://simplek12.titanpad.com/1 - 21st Century Projects Webinar http://jeremyteq.titanpad.com/4 - Dropbox Webinar http://simplek12.titanpad.com/3 - Breaking Down the Four Walls of Your Classroom (Skype) http://simplek12.titanpad.com/5 - Accessing and Creating Virtual Field Trips http://simplek12.titanpad.com/6 - Cite This: Two Free Tools that Make Citing Sources Easy! http://simplek12.titanpad.com/7 - Using Technology to Address the Core Issues and Challenges of Special Education http://simplek12.titanpad.com/8 - The Right Tools for the Right Job: 30 Tools in 50 Minutes
