Editor’s Note

Editor's Note HOW TO HUG WINTER

I grew up in Australia, where a year of torrid summer was interrupted by a few nanoseconds of cooler weather called “winter.” Here in Edmonton, it sometimes feels as though most of the year is winter, with a few short weeks of road-repair season in between.

As winter is here again, in this issue we’re embracing the season above and beyond the traditional holidays. Daniela Zenari gives us a tutorial on winter hiking, so we can take advantage of trails like those in the river valley all year round. Natasha Chiam shows us Indigenous mid-winter ceremonies to explore. We have a New Year’s Eve survival guide, a winter festival round-up, and the highlights of the upcoming art, theatre, and music seasons. Plus, we have shopping guides and much more. There is so much to explore and enjoy in Edmonton and beyond, no matter the weather.

Hug winter and hurry to see it all!

WE ASKED:

Info Edmonton is one of Alberta Libraries’ most-requested magazines!

1) What's your favourite holiday activity, that you do every year? The one that brings you joy and makes family feel closer?

2) Do you have a show, play or concert that you like to attend around this time every year?

1) Our favorite way to spend time as a family is to go skiing. It started by spending time at Snow Valley and then progressed to trips to the mountains. This remains one of our favorite family activities.

2) The past few years we have enjoyed spending time with a few couples enjoying Ballet Edmonton's Be Merry, which was always memorable.

Camille Robertson, Co-Owner, Peter Robertson Gallery. Peter Robertson Gallery is 20!

1) Our family is passionate about celebrating Halloween and Christmas every year. We love decorating both inside and out—we’re definitely ‘that house’ in our neighbourhood. Unpacking decorations and setting everything up has become one of our favorite traditions.

2) Our favorite annual event is attending A Christmas Carol. I love experiencing this production every winter and witnessing the incredible theatrical magic the Citadel team creates. I always forget it’s a ghost story and still find myself jumping at the surprises!

Jessie van Rijn, Executive Director at The Citadel Theatre.

1) I love dressing up for Halloween. I think this is a great opportunity for people to express themselves in a very unique way. Halloween has always been a favourite for me. Seeing all the joy that kids get from trick or treating is an added bonus.

2) I would have to say that I am very excited for Happy Beer Street during the winter season. It promotes walking as a way to experience breweries up and down 99 Street. You can do short walks and warm up at every spot with a pint.

Sean Comeau, General Manager, Shiddy's Rumpus Room.

SEASON IS HERE! Show

Alberta Ballet's The Winter Gala

The 2024/2025 show season is amazing. Here are just some of the highlights of the season, including dance, music, stage, and Broadway shows.

ALBERTA BALLET

La Sylphide Sep 20-21; GRIMM Oct 25-26; The Nutcracker Dec 4-8; The Winter Gala Jan 25

This season can only be described as “elegant.” Their The Winter Gala is our cover feature. The season began before this edition went to press— check our review of La Sylphide on the InfoEdmonton website.

La Sylphide is one of the oldest ballets in the world, and is followed by the very new GRIMM, a dark interpretation of classic fairytales. The Nutcracker is a holiday favourite, and the season ends with The Winter Gala, featuring over 100 dancers. AlbertaBallet.com

CITADEL THEATRE

Main Stage: A Streetcar Named Desire Sep 21 – Oct 13; Bear Grease Oct 17–27; The Ballad of Johnny and June Nov 9 – Dec 8; A Christmas Carol Nov 23–Dec 24; Goblin: Macbeth Jan 11–Feb 2; Disney's Frozen: The Broadway Musical Feb–Mar 2; A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The ‘70s Musical, Feb 22–Mar 23; Heist Mar 22–Apr 13; Little Women May 3–25

House series: Ali Hassan: Does This Taste Funny? Feb 6–9; It Takes Two: Dynamic Duets Mar 6–9; We Are Family: United in Harmony Apr 3–6; Lucy Darling in Indulgence May 1–4

The first word that surfaces when you study the Citadel’s season is “balance.” Their house season shifts from comedy to concerts and back to comedy, while the main stage performances are a perfect mix of traditional and new, each with a twist that makes them fresh and interesting. For example, A Christmas Carol is set in the 1950s, and one of the two Shakespearean offerings include orcs. CitadelTheatre.com

WINSPEAR CENTRE/EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Winspear Centre’s season runs nearly all year round, with dozens of performances ranging from outdoor concerts, to children’s shows, from baroque to thoroughly modern offerings.

This year, watch for Let's Misbehave: The Songs of Cole Porter, Lightly Classical: Affairs of the Heart, In the Christmas Mood with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Salute to Vienna New Year's Concert featuring dancers and the Strauss Symphony of Canada, Schubert, Strauss & Saint-Saëns by the ESO, among many other concerts and performances. There truly is something for everyone. WinspearCentre.com

BROADWAY ACROSS CANADA

The Book of Mormon Nov 19-24; Beetlejuice Jan 14-19; Tina: The Tina Turner Musical Mar 11-16; Riverdance Jun 20-22; Disney’s The Lion King Jul 9-27

Broadway Across Canada brings only proven fan-favourite shows to the Edmonton stage, and this year, their season includes the very old—Riverdance is celebrating its 30th anniversary—to the very new—Tina: The Tina Turner Musical premiered on Broadway in 2019. Edmonton.Broadway.com

ARDEN THEATRE

The Arden Theatre in St. Albert is offering a full and busy season stretching from August to April. Highlights include ABBA Revisited in November, Al Simmons in March, and Blue Moon Marquee in April. Keep an eye on their season, as some of the performances and concerts have already sold out. StAlbert.ca/exp/Arden

EDMONTON OPERA

Die Fledermaus Nov 7, 9 & 12; Bluebeard’s Castle, Feb 1, 4, 6, & 7, Aquarius: Songs of the Stars, Apr 9, 10, 11, & 12; Die Walküre June 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, & 13 Opera has an undeserved reputation for being inaccessible, which the Edmonton Opera company disproves with this season. Bluebeard’s Castle is a new opera, sung in English, and is a love story that wrenches the heart. Aquarius: Songs of the Stars will be staged at TELUS World of Science and features a fusion of opera’s greatest moments inspired by the skies and galaxies. Die Walküre is part of Wagner’s famous Ring Cycle, which partly inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings. EdmontonOpera.com

There are many more theatres, stage companies, and concert venues in Edmonton, including the Brian Webb Dance Company, the Shadow Theatre, The Varscona, The Walterdale, and Myer Horowitz. Visit each venue’s or company’s website to check their season offerings. You can also search Info Edmonton’s online event listings at InfoEdmonton.com/Events.

YEARS OF COUNTRY & COMMUNITY 70 CFCW CELEBRATES

FROM A SMALL-TOWN STATION TO ALBERTA’S COUNTRY MUSIC LEGEND

For 70 years, CFCW has been the voice of country music and community in Alberta.

Signing on the air on November 2nd, 1954, as a modest 250-watt station, CFCW originally served the Camrose and Wetaskiwin areas. The “CW” in its name paid tribute to those towns, but it soon evolved into something more: Canada’s first full-time country music station. Now boasting a powerful 50,000-watt signal and broadcasting across Alberta, CFCW has become a pillar of both the country music scene and the agricultural community.

From its humble beginnings, CFCW has stayed true to its roots. The station's focus on community support, local agriculture, and the country music industry remains as strong as ever. To celebrate its 70th anniversary, CFCW is hosting a special event on November 2nd at Cook County Saloon, where listeners can join current and former staff for an evening of reminiscing and revelry.

Additionally, CFCW is marking this milestone with the release of Alberta’s Country Legend: The Story of 840 CFCW, a history book filled with behind-the-scenes

stories, photos, and interviews with nearly 50 personalities and staff. This commemorative volume offers a nostalgic look back at the station's journey from a smalltown start to becoming an iconic voice in Canadian country radio. The book is available now on the station’s website.

Through frequency changes, format shifts, and a growing listener base, CFCW has remained a steadfast presence in Alberta's country music scene—and it’s not slowing down anytime soon. Here's to 70 more years of music, memories, and community.

Enter winter hiking. It is the most approachable winter sport for anyone looking to enjoy the extensive Edmonton River Valley system, Canada’s largest contiguous area of urban parkland.

There are a few things to know before hitting the trails. The key to winter activity is to dress warm, but you never want to sweat. Sweat in cold air can put you at risk of hypothermia. The easiest way to prevent sweating is to layer up. Start with a good base layer for your top and bottoms. Use thin layers over your base to add or remove as needed, ensuring you can move freely.

Cotton is the enemy as it won’t dry if it gets wet from sweat. Natural wool fibres or polyester are the better choices because they wick away moisture, keeping you dry. Don’t forget other essential clothing items:

• A hat or buff

• Gloves

• Socks

• Lightweight boots or waterproof trail runners

Once you have your clothing down, other equipment can make your winter walks smoother:

• Insulated water bottle: Or you’ll be drinking ice!

• Hiking poles: Split the work between your arms and legs.

• Backpack: Carry your spare layers, water, and snacks if you’re going for a longer hike.

• Headlamp: For the mornings and early evenings during Edmonton’s dark winters

• Microspikes: To stay on your feet on an icy trail

• GPS tracker or cell phone: For emergencies, especially if you’re not in the city.

Start with the gear that you have access to. Wait to invest in the best brands until you know you like winter hiking. Once you know what you’re looking for, you can find cheap alternatives by buying used. Check out your nearest second-hand store, or you can invest more and buy new.

New gear:

• Breathe Outdoors BreatheOutdoors.ca

• Track and Trail Shop.TracknTrail.ca

Used, rental, or repairing gear:

• Totem Outfitters TotemOutfitters.ca

It’s nice to have company on the trails. The Edmonton Trail Community is there if your friends can’t come with you. They meet year-round on Tuesdays and Saturdays, hitting different trail systems around the city. There are two groups–runners and hikers–so someone is always going at your pace. Attending meetups is free, and new people are welcome. Their website offers information about winter hiking, trail stewardship, and weekly meetups. Bit.ly/YEGTrails

DINING OUT ON

Christmas Day

WE HAVE THE WHY AND THE WHERE

Big family dinners, with every aunt, cousin and second cousin squeezing in around a noisy table is traditional. But dining out during the biggest holiday in Western society has many positives, including:

• If you are solo on the day, enjoying a meal in a restaurant beats eating alone.

• You don’t observe Christian holidays, but everyone is celebrating, so you will, too.

• Your family has few or no small children. Dining out is an elegant experience.

• You find it more economical to dine out than to buy extended ingredients for dinner at home and mountains of leftovers than will be discarded.

WHERE TO DINE OUT ON CHRISTMAS DAY

Reserve your table early for any restaurant and keep your reservation number.

The premier Christmas dinner destination is the Hotel Macdonald, who provide buffets or set menus for brunch, lunch and dinner. Dinner includes live entertainment. Christmas Eve dinner is also available.

Most of the restaurants in the major hotels in the city are open on Christmas Day, including Chateau Lacombe’s La Ronde revolving restaurant, and Chateau Louise’s Royal Coach dining room. Also, Braven, inside the ICE District Marriott hotel, will be open.

To take all the pressure—including economic pressure—out of the day, consider Denny’s Restaurants, which are all open on Christmas Day. This is deeply relaxed, comfort food dining, which might be exactly what you seek for your Christmas break.

It is becoming a tradition for many Chinese restaurants to be open for Christmas Day…but not all of them. If you have a favourite Chinese dining spot, check with them directly for their Christmas Day hours.

CLASSIC MULLED WINE RECIPE

Mulled wine is a warm, spiced red wine that's perfect for cozying up on a chilly evening. With a slow cooker, you can leave the wine on low for the day.

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine (750 ml) – medium-bodied like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon

1 orange – sliced into rounds

1 lemon – sliced into rounds

1/4 cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)

3 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

2 star anise

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)

1/4 cup brandy (optional, for an extra kick)

Instructions:

In a large pot, combine the spices and red wine, heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Avoid boiling the wine.

Add orange and lemon slices. Stir in honey or sugar. The longer you simmer, the more the flavors will meld.

If you’re using brandy, stir in before serving. Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and fruit slices.

Serve hot. Garnish with additional cinnamon sticks or orange slices.

Happy Holidays!

CHARCUTERIE UNCOVERED:

CREATE OR CURATE THE PERFECT BOARD

DIY TIPS AND TOP SPOTS TO ENJOY

GOURMET CHARCUTERIE

charcuterie is traditionally a place where cured meats are sold, similar to a delicatessen. Preserving and curing meats dates back thousands of years, to as early as Rome in the second century B.C.E., and practiced all over the world.

The modern charcuterie board originated in France in the 15th century, which remains the home of some of the best charcuterie available. Charcuterie is popular now as it offers safe options for even the pickiest eaters. It’s easy. It’s fun. It’s like the sought-after Lunchables from childhood but all grown up. Charcuterie also creates an easy gathering spot at a large party, for guests to chat with friends. It’s a great option for any holiday fête.

When building your own board at home, stick with the rule of threes. Three types of cheese, meats, and starches like crackers, or breads. Finally, three types of accoutrements; this can mean anything from grainy mustard, savoury jelly, olives or dried fruits. A good rule of thumb is to vary the textures in these categories.

The Butchery by Rge Rd provides locally made smoked meats, sausages, pâté, crunchy breads, and delicate focaccias. You’ll be supporting Alberta farmers and makers too!

TheButcheryYeg.ca

Or you can save yourself some time; Art of Charcuterie is a local catering company who do the heavy lifting for you. Just set out your board and arrange it for your party. They offer locally sourced high-quality meats, cheeses, and delicate confections curated into masterfully crafted works of art. They can accommodate most dietary restrictions.

ArtOfCharcuterie.ca

There are many restaurants in Edmonton that offer fantastic options as well as great wine pairings to go with them. Visit one of these wonderful restaurants to try charcuterie for yourself. Here’s two suggestions:

La Proscutteria YEG, where culinary passion intertwines with the love for aperitivo culture, and the soulful charm of charcuterie; it’s the ultimate haven for food enthusiasts. LapYeg.com

Ampersand 27, where you can enjoy craft cocktails, and a range of upmarket local, seasonal fare served in an artsy, modern space. This hotel restaurant offers a build-your-own charcuterie board. Ampersand27.com

Check our dining listings on InfoEdmonton.com for more charcuterie possibilities.

Moving into the cooler weather, Fort Edmonton Park offers spooky tours of the park called Paranormal Tours during the week and their highly anticipated DARK Halloween festival on the weekends.

With Rogers Place at its core, this downtown hub is an ideal area for all things sports and entertainment. Whether it’s a weekday or weekend, there’s always something happening on the Ice District, no matter the weather.

A favourite family activity, tobogganing is a classic Canadian activity. Parkwest is easy to climb and fun to slide down. This is a good area for kids and first timers. Just make sure you’re nice and bundled up!

The largest local ski and snowboard resort, Rabbit Hill offers over 40 acres of ski and snowboard trails, a tube park as well as one of the best Terrain Parks. If you’ve never skied before, they offer group classes on the weekend.

There is still so much to see at the zoo in the winter, and you may see more excitement from the animals. The shorter days make it easier to observe animals that are primarily active during dusk and dawn.

Snow Valley Edmonton is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing year-round, premier outdoor adventures in the heart of the city. The Ski Club is a great place to learn to ski or snowboard from nationally certified instructors, no matter your age or ability in multi week programs or private lessons.

The Loop begins at the park’s skating oval, where you enter the forest under a colourfully lit archway of trees. This picture-perfect iceway creates a large loop with views of the Ledge and the river valley through the woods. Ample parking available.

Take a trip out of the city to Elk Island National Park when the wildlife viewing is at its best. Snowshoeing is a great way to discover Elk Island National Park in winter. Snowshoers are welcome to explore any trail in the park.

The four dramatic glass pyramids in Edmonton's river valley house a spectacular display of flowers and vegetation. The Tropical Pyramid features one of North America's largest collections of orchid species, while the Feature Pyramid showcases seasonal, themed floral exhibits.

While the Art Gallery itself is beautiful, the AGA develops and presents original exhibitions of contemporary and historical art. The AGA is a not-to-be-missed part of the city's Arts District.

There’s plenty of magic under the glass dome of the Ice Palace including figure skating, senior skate, hockey, and non-ice activities such as concerts and fundraising events all in the warmth of West Edmonton Mall.

A gateway to the heart of Edmonton’s River Valley, the John Janzen Nature Centre takes visitors for a walk on the wild side with programs, events and interactive exhibits designed to promote awareness and engagement with nature in an urban setting.
