Editor's Note DINING EL DESKO?

LET'S CHANGE THAT!

When snow blankets the city and the wind howls at the windows, it’s tempting to stay cozy at your desk, lunching on reheated leftovers and dreaming of spring. But Edmonton’s dining scene is far too exciting to let winter hold you back. This issue is all about enticing you to bundle up, venture out, and experience the city’s incredible restaurants—because trust us, they’re worth it.

We’ve revamped our dining guide to make it easier than ever to discover your next favourite meal, whether it’s a hearty bowl of ramen, an elegant multi-course menu, or something indulgently sweet. And by popular demand, we’ve brought back our Directories for Shopping, Dining, Arts & Attractions, and Entertainment—your one-stop guide to making the most of Edmonton.

From February’s vibrant festivals to spring’s fresh events, there’s plenty to see, eat, and do across the city. In this issue, we’ve spotlighted some of the best food, experiences, and happenings to carry you through to warmer days.

So, step away from the desk and step into Edmonton’s lively dining scene. Who knows? You might find a new favourite that makes those reheated leftovers a thing of the past.

Bon appétit!

WE ASKED:

1) What is the meal you end up ordering the most, and who does it best in Edmonton? 2) Do you have a favourite ritual for spring? How do you farewell the snow?

1) My go-to restaurants, particularly on a cool winter day are either Dorinku for their ramen, or Nhon Hoa sandwich bar for their vegetarian satay Vietnamese sub--or banh mi. These two spots are my faves for comfort food as it's always consistent and super tasty!

2) While I don't really have a spring ritual, I do always look forward to the snow melt and getting back into regular biking. Once the snow is melted, I always look forward to a spring bike ride in Mill Creek ravine, or a long walk in the ravine.

Cherie Klassen, Executive Director for the Old Strathcona Business Association.

1) This is a tough question because I love a lot of different kinds of food. Lately I’ve been devouring Asian cuisine, and I cannot get enough ramen; I always turn to Misoya Ramen on 104 Street. We’re insanely lucky in Edmonton to have so much diversity in our cuisine that we can get almost anything.

2) I’m a very active person and specifically love walking outside when the weather is nice. The second the snow is gone, and I won’t slip, I’m outside either getting my butt kicked by running stairs or going for a really long walk (with a coffee in hand).

Quinn Phillips, Director of Marketing and Communications at Edmonton Downtown Business Association.

1) The meal I always end up ordering the most at restaurants (if it is available) is a good charcuterie board! I would say that Partake on 124 Street & Area does it the best! You can pick your own meats and cheeses from their curated selection.

2) I do have a favourite ritual when spring comes, and it is doing my wardrobe clean up. This is a ritual I do every start of a new season, where I assess my clothes, whether I should sell or donate them. I would say this is also a way for me to say farewell to the winter season—where I pack away my big winter coats and winter boots!

Kyzle Tabanay, Marketing Coordinator, 124 Street & Area Business Association.

Pretty, playful, and just a little bit bold, the Pink Lady is the perfect Valentine’s Day cocktail. With its blush hue and silky texture, this classic drink dates back to the early 1900s, blending gin, applejack, lemon, and a hint of grenadine for sweetness. A frothy egg white finish gives it a luxe feel—ideal for toasting romance, friendship, or simply a great night in.

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces London Dry gin

1/2 ounce applejack

3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed

1/4 ounce grenadine

1 egg white

Garnish: brandied cherry

Steps

Add all ingredients into a shaker and vigorously dryshake (without ice).

Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a brandied cherry.

Enjoy!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT COOKING AND THE INDUSTRY?

I love my industry because of the amazing amounts of options you have to pursue. It's satisfying to make people happy for all the many reasons they go out and choose your place to dine.

WHAT’S A DISH YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?

“War paint,” the dish on the front of my cookbook. Making the Handprint sauce is not only hard to do but the print is just as hard and very technical. And one of a kind.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE EDMONTON RESTAURANTS?

Bar Bricco, Partake, Fu’s Repair Shop, 852 Hong Kong Café.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND A NIGHT OUT IN EDMONTON?

Always eating. Even as I get older, eating gets more and more of my personal interest in my life, seeing what people are doing. Some people think dining to be a waste of money, but to me it’s supporting and learning. Plus, I love the feeling of eating a dish that gets me excited to run back into my kitchen and cook all night!

Tamara

SOLON

Chef Tamara Solon, co-owner and Head Chef of Chartier in Beaumont, has been a pivotal force behind the restaurant’s acclaim for its elevated French-Canadian cuisine. A graduate of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s culinary program in 2016, Tamara has been with Chartier since its inception, rising from Sous Chef to her current leadership role. Her dedication to sourcing local ingredients and crafting innovative dishes has garnered Chartier recognition, including being named Best New Restaurant by Avenue Magazine in 2016 and features on Food Network Canada’s Big Food Bucket List

WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU EVER MADE THAT DIRECTED YOUR CAREER PATH?

Risotto with wild mushrooms, parmesan and truffle oil.

WHAT LOCAL CHEFS HAVE INSPIRED YOU?

Andrew Fung (Chef / Proprietor at XIX Nineteen), Davina Moraiko (Chef de Cuisine at Rge Rd), Blair Lebsack (Chef and Co-Owner, Rge Rd), Lindsay Porter (Chef, The Common), Paul Shufelt (Chef and proprietor of Workshop Eatery, Woodshed Burgers, Hayloft Steak & Fish, and the

Greenhouse Restaurants), Doreen Prei (CBC Radio Active Food Columnist), and Serge Belair (Executive Chef, Edmonton Convention Centre).

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE DISH? OR THE MEAL THAT YOU LOVE MAKING FOR DINERS, AND DO SO OFTEN?

Chartier’s Tourtière. It is a French-Canadian meat pie and I have been refining my recipe for years. It is not your traditional grandmother’s recipe and I enjoy hearing from our guests when it surprises them with the flavour.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND A NIGHT OUT IN EDMONTON?

Eating out with my partner at new restaurants or some of our old favourites.

WHAT IS YOUR COMFORT MEAL, MADE JUST FOR YOU?

My go to comfort meal must have cheese! So a grilled cheese of any kind will always make me feel better.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WINTER ATTRACTION IN EDMONTON?

I love a good winter wonderland walk in the River Valley, we are so absolutely fortunate to have such an amazing green space.

APRIL 12

The Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts (ACUA) is hosting its annual Easter Market at their gallery and boutique. This event celebrates Ukrainian culture and artistry, featuring traditional crafts, foods, and the iconic pysanky—intricately decorated Easter eggs that are a hallmark of Ukrainian Easter traditions.

In Alberta, pysanky hold a special place, symbolizing the province's rich Ukrainian heritage. The town of Vegreville, for instance, is home to the world's second-largest pysanka, a testament to the cultural significance of these eggs in the region.

Attending ACUA's Easter Market offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in this vibrant tradition, explore handcrafted pysanky, and perhaps even take home a piece of Alberta's cultural tapestry. ACUArts.ca

From March 1st to 23rd, they are holding their Vintage Kitchen Show. Says co-owner Betty Reitan, “It typically is quite colourful, with lots of vintage Pyrex, FireKing and more. Bright tablecloths, aprons, fun vintage glassware, etc. Anything related to kitchen, cooking and entertaining from the ‘30s through the ‘90s.”

If you love authentic, retro kitchen and kitschy pieces, and touches of classic cooking styles, head to the Antique Mall. (Tip: Take a cut lunch!) 10323 78 Ave NW | (780) 433-0398 | OldStrathconaMall.com
