REN

拉曼大學建築展台 ARCHITECTURE EXHIBITION BOOTH | UTAR

JAN 2019

REN is a minimalist exhibition booth to promote the architecture course in UTAR. I was inspired by Japanese simplicity, neatness, and orderliness. The word ren is a play of words, derived from zen, meaning peaceful and calm. This booth will make interested individuals to enroll in UTAR’s architecture course immediately.

The process started from selecting fruits and vegetables around the house, exploring fractals of nature through garlic, rambutan, and ginger through dissection, peeling, and different orientations. I then drew a hand-sketched collage of compiled individual sketches in a way that achieves harmony and balance between the many different elements.

Then, I extracted primary shapes from the previous sketches and used the primary colors to make the hierarchy, focal points, and repetition distinct. I created 2 collage variations to explore more possibilities.

This 3D paper mantra was made from extruding the shapes from the previous collage and a lot of trial-and-error with exploring the geometric possibilities.

This 4-in-1 primary color paper mantra was created from the primary colors collage, with the hierarchy and flow inspired from dance movements in our precedent studies and geometric shapes flowing upwards and towards the focal triangle in the middle.

Next, I created a space form model with satay sticks and a ping pong ball. It has an upward ripple movement with emphasis on the center and the movement of space.

Then, I create a mixed medium model with spray painted modelling board and satay sticks to give a more concrete form to the abstract concept. This is the translation and transformation phase.

This is the penultimate idea translation model, made with modelling board and satay sticks. I was starting to turn the previous ideas into more realistic forms, and thinking of how people would move around and use the space.

The final model shows the final exhibition booth. It is made of recyclable carboard material and 3 joinery methods that do not require nuts and bolts. It consists of 3 high tables that also act as shelves, and a table with 2 chairs. I chose recyclable materials so that it can be disassembled and moved easily.

DIFFUSE

擴散,自然靜修 NATURE RETREAT | FRIM, KEPONG

MAY 2019

In Studio 2, we have 2 projects. The first is to create an information counter in FRIM, Kepong, a lush site with diverse greenery. The second is to create an eco-retreat for guests to relax in nature. Diffuse is built on the concept of merging and adapting into nature, and to incorporate elements of her into our life.

Torque is the name of my information counter in FRIM, Kepong. I was inspired by playing around with the shapes of the modelling board, twisting and turning around the base board. It reflects on the movement and flow of the wind in FRIM, and is also oriented in a way that allows cross ventilation from the openings. I added slits and framing pieces as shading and lighting devices.

The final design includes an information counter, a chair, and a desk for discussion. Towards the lake, there is a swing that hangs from the roof for people to enjoy the breeze and the tranquil view.

The second project is an eco-resort, located by the river in FRIM, Kepong. The curvatures were derived and developed from the contours of the site. I chose an organic form as I believe that they resemble nature more, and that people can feel more relaxed as opposed to being in a space with sharp corners.

CASA DE LOS VIVOS Casa de los Vivos, the House of Life, is nestled in the hills of Hulu Langat. Surrounded by local culture, the tranquil and lush site provides a getaway for a family of 3 generations to reside in.

三代住宅 CROSS GENERATION HOME | HULU LANGAT

JAN 2020

The first project is a fun exercise; to design 6 spaces revolving a challenging contour site. I made the site from 2 cloths, dipped and rubbed in with concrete. To support the heavy cloth, I used metal frames to shape it and a central steel rod that acts as a column for the whole structure.

The spaces were designed with open spaces and interaction with nature in mind, I made a waterfall, swimming pool area, and many resting areas for leisure (reading, relaxing, talking, sleeping, etc.)

Location Plan

Key Plan

Site Plan

I developed my form from simple geometric shapes; 3 rectangles attached to a circle. The circle is the public zone, as the shape symbolizes unity for the family. I further explored the possibilities by merging the shapes and offsetting certain parts. The form is dissected further, and I defined the boundary and zones based on the generations of the family and public zones. Then space is refined and separated, but connected by a path. The process of open geometry is applied to further define specific rooms and finalized with methods learned from Ar. Liaw to make the spaces more lively and interesting.

In Studio 4, the design brief calls for a chalet design in the hills of Kuala Kubu Bharu. There are 4 projects. The first is on the site analysis of the history of the small town. The second is my conceptual plan on the whole scheme. The third is the detailed design of my eco chalet unit. The final project is the detailed plan of every zone in my site.

ARTI-CULTURE

藝術與文化中心,吉隆坡 ADAPTIVE RE-USE | KUALA LUMPUR

JAN 2021

Kuala Lumpur was a jungle in year 1857. The city has since then flourished and developed from a small settlement to a cosmopolitan metropolis today. However, heritage buildings are losing its charms and values and many are left to abandon or deteriorate. These buildings that resonate the past of our city will be demolished if not found with sustainable usage.

Our architectural heritage is diminishing if not protected by regulations and new developments intended for lucrative profit. This adaptive re-use project aims to rejuvenate existing heritage shop lots combined with a new building to rejuvenate the heritage and culture of kl.

DYNAMIS ENCLAVE

活力飛地,藝術中心 ARTISTIC HUB | RIVER OF LIFE

MAY 2021

Forming the nucleus of the historically rich avenue in Kuala Lumpur, an urban rejuvenation plan on a dormant site demonstrates the everchanging socio-cultural aspects of kl. The 4000m² mixed-used development located next to Dayabumi complex is a canvas for the talented and bold local artistic community.

Dynamis: “the state of that which is not yet fully realized: power, potentiality.” Enclave: “a place surrounded by a larger territory that is culturally or ethnically distinct.” Dynamis Enclave is a platform of expression for creative, intellectual, and dogmatic individuals to translate their dreams and ambitions into reality. Their creations inspire and empower generations to believe in themselves, explore their identity, and discover their hidden potential. In an attempt to search for kl culture from within, Dynamis Enclave is a place for those who are lost to feel found and grounded through art.
