HANDLING THE DIFFICULT AGE OF TEENAGE Teenage years are very difficult in a person’s life. It is a time when you are neither a kid nor fully an adult. It is an age where you are old enough to know things that grown-ups do, but not mature enough to understand the reasons behind them. It is a very crucial stage as the child’s personality is formed in this age. Age 13-19 is typically the adolescent or the teenage age. Lots of changes happen during this time, both physically and mentally. In this period, the relationship between parents and kids seem to strain a little. This happens because the children may find it difficult to express themselves openly to their parents. At this age, we tend to get closer to our friends outside and seek validation from the outside world. But because all this is something that happens with everybody while growing up, having a therapist for teens isn’t really given too much attention. However, it is important that we look out for symptoms that say that our child isn’t able to cope with the ocean of emotions that this age has bought with itself. It is necessary that we understand, that it is a time frame in which they are exploring themselves as a person and trying to make sense of things happening around. The first crush/ puppy love, pressure of acing in studies, being good in sports, getting appreciation of teachers, want to look good and be popular are just some of the issues or topics that teenagers face. In India, it is a compulsion in many schools to have a counselling psychologist for the teens. In a difficult age where children struggle to open up to their buddies or folks, the psychologist helps them ease with that. A psychologist will provide them with a nonjudgemental year and give them solutions according to their problems. More than that, a counsellor helps chalk out the path towards solving of issue. They understand that it takes a lot of time to even approach a counsellor and even more courage to actually open up to someone you have just met. Hence they may first start by asking you questions about yourself, family, friends, interests, how the past year has been etc. As they are dealing with kids in this case, the see to it that they have created an environment for the kids comfortable enough for them to open up slowly. The frequency and duration of the counselling session depends upon person to person. No matter how much you know your kid, there are always possibilities that you do not know what they are going through. Therefore it is important that you look out for symptoms in them that say they need to visit a counsellor. Not just parents, but teachers also play a vital role in this. There have been many cases where a teacher has
