TACKLING RELATIONSHIP AND FAMILY ISSUES WITH A COUNSELLOR In any kind of relationship, there are going to be challenges, ups and downs as no relationship is a piece of cake. After the initial honeymoon period is over, the test of the relationship begins. He problems might be small in form of little disagreements and arguments or they could be big misunderstandings. But what matters is how the couple faces and tackles this and moves ahead with time and each other. For this, it is very important for things to be simple between the two individuals. If there is a very good connection and understanding between them, then no matter how difficult the situation in front of them is, they will face it together. A couple that does not have a sense of understanding between them, will be busy solving issues between them and also the big issue in front of them. But what if these little problems between the couple just fail to subside? What if the couple just finds it difficult to bridge the gap between them and are not able to reconcile? They might turn to their friends or close ones in family or anyone they think who could help them out to talk this out. But if even this doesn’t help, it might be time to approach a professional relationship advisor, a therapist or a counsellor for the couple. This person is someone who has the knowledge and it qualified to help couples out with their problems. They help the couple by first making them sit and patiently listen to each side of the story. Then, they may provide some trust exercises or more that would give them a clearer understanding of each other’s viewpoints, so that they see it clearly and can be more empathetic towards each other. If the couple with problems is married and they have a family, it is important to remember that this conflict between them is going to greatly affect the family as well. There are multiple reasons as to why there could be problems between a couple. It could be due to lack of communication, lack of intimacy, financial issues, sudden calamity like death in the family, cheating, lack of trust and the list goes on. But if the two individuals decide to forgive each other and want to really work on their relationship and hold the family together, they may opt for family counselling. For smooth functioning of any relationship, it is very important that both individuals are open and vocal about how they feel in any given difficult situation. How else will their partner know otherwise that they are going through something or are not liking something about their partner’s behaviour? This in turn will lead to a big communication gap between the two people making it more difficult to be accommodating of each other’s viewpoints.

The family counsellor provides support and non-judgemental support, encouraging everyone in the family to be open about how they feel about a current situation.
