ARCHITECTURAL
PORTFOLIO Selected Works 2018-2021
Tanuj Karkra
HELLO.
This portfolio includes a selection of works that I completed during my four years at Gateway College of Architecture and Design in Sonipat. I completed all work and, to the best of my knowledge, all teamwork has been credited. The Creation of Adam is a fresco painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Italian artist Michelangelo that was completed between 1508 and 1512. It depicts the Biblical story of creation from Genesis, in which God creates Adam, the first man. This painting is a metaphor for how divine powers and man’s efforts combine to give birth to creations. To represent the above- mentioned concept, the cover page of this portfolio incorporates God’s and Adam’s hands. I enjoy travelling and exploring new places, as well as using my camera to capture the essence of the location. These sorts of stories aid my design process and enable me to create a first visual of the design project I’m working on. In a nutshell, my photographs help me develop my designs. Similarly, each project in this portfolio begins with a photograph taken by me in various locations to establish the project’s theme. I took all of the photos in this portfolio.

01. PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India
Architectural Design 2020 - 2021 Semester 5 (Individual) Building Typology - Socio - Cultural Guide - Ar. Sohum Mukherjee, Ar. Anisha Madaan
The world is filled with creative people looking for a way to showcase their talents and express their feelings to a receptive audience. Performing arts allow people to express themselves through dance, drama, and music. The goal of this project was to design a Performing Arts Center that encourages self-expression, promotes creativity, and benefits the community. To achieve these goals, the project focuses on developing into a center that caters primarily to the performing arts, providing with space, infrastructure, knowledge recourse and acting as a magnet to those practicing or interested in art to promote learning and interest towards the arts through observation, interaction and practice.

Abstract
Axes from the anchor points - one from Bhairon Marg and other from Pragati Maidan, this along with the site shape forms a curve and also a focal point.
Tanuj Karkra Undergraduate Portfolio
The curve is extruded, to showcase the horizontality of the built form. All the functions are layered and spread out but still keeping a single entity.
Form manifests by adding curtain wall on the facade. Auditorium is placed within the spheroid and forms a focal point. The auditorium seems floating. 8

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words “Meditation & Yoga”? Many of us would immediately think of Inner Peace and Physical Fitness. But the question is, why are we still using 5,000-year-old practice to achieve peace and health in the current times? The answer is – because it still works. Even if we have high-tech medical facilities, they fail when it comes to mental peace. Both meditation and yoga are extremely important for a 21st century person because we are subjected to competitive and workaholic environments, our sedentary lifestyles, and our constant engagement with screens can have an overwhelming effect on us both physically and psychologically. According to the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne, “the greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself.” This has never been more true than in today’s fast-paced society. The practice of meditation and yoga has undoubtedly been identified as a key method that can assist.

Architectural Design 2021 - 2022 Semester 6 (Individual) Building Typology - Housing Guide - Ar. Sohum Mukherjee, Ar. Radhika Nagpal
A house is a structure that can be occupied by people for living purposes. The term “house” refers to a variety of dwellings, ranging from nomadic tribes’ rudimentary huts to freestanding individual structures. Buildings with many such dwelling units are referred to as Group Housing. South Asian University (SAU) is an international university established by the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries. It is a residential university with 12 departments, 5000 students, and 500 faculty members, with 4500 students and nearly 250 faculty members expected to live on campus. This Institutional Housing is proposed for the faculty members of SAU.

04. CAMPUS ART GALLERY Sonipat, Haryana, India
Architectural Design 2020 - 2021 Semester 5 (Individual) Building Typology - Museum and Galleries Guide - Ar. Sohum Mukherjee, Ar. Anisha Madaan
Artwork has the ability to make us ponder upon the differences between real and surreal. Art galleries are becoming more conventional and typical in todays scenario, and they don’t amuse people very much. Ar. Bernard Tschumi describes 6 principles in the book Architecture and Disjunction. One of the principle is to create Shock images to break the monotony of the structures in vicinity. These shock images create a surprise factor for the building, which is very important for buildings like Art galleries. They restore the surprise factor to the building. Using these ideas we can also fool the mind by creating familiar visuals on the exterior but then give surprises with unfamiliar visuals (shock images) in interiors.

Abstract
Tanuj Karkra Undergraduate Portfolio
Art Galleries should produce a shock image for the visitors and give a newer definition to art. This shock factor breaks the monotony of existing architecture. This Art Gallery has a traditional appeal through facade but the spaces are arranged in a way that it provides newer dimensions to the spaces.
Circulation is intuitive and intertwined in layers. Large exhibition and Sculpture Gallery is in the basement and accessed through ramp.

Competition (ANDC 2020) 2020 - 2021 Team Head (Group of 10) Qualified Entry Building Typology - Public Transportation (Tier 3)
Tanuj Karkra Undergraduate Portfolio
In India, the public transportation sector indulges in transporting millions of people a day. All of this has come to a pause due to the current pandemic. On the other hand, due to the upsurge, the public mobility space has a vital role to play in today’s situation, as it is inevitable by human activity. Sampla is a village located in the Rohtak district of Haryana, India. During this time, the most affected people are the residents of Tier 3 areas as the migrant workers in the cities lost their jobs due to the pandemic and were compelled to return to their hometown for survival. Now they are in search of jobs in nearby areas as daily life is coming back to track. Being in the “urban sprawl” area, the site serves as a commuter-type function where the daily journey to work is the most basic use. Because of the sudden breakdown, people in tier 3 have suffered the most and are plunged into “extreme distress”.

Abstract
Tanuj Karkra Undergraduate Portfolio
EXISTING CHAOS
NEW BEGINNINGS
Idea is to take the nothingness that exists in a void between two objects and convert it into a tangible aspect that will redefine it’s meaning. To create a liability into an asset. These people running to earn bread, subconsciously forgot how their lives are somehow directly dependent upon public transport. The sudden shutdown of public transport facilities has chronically affected their lives. The use of the public facility is necessary to resume their lives. Hence, this time begs for concrete yet easy solution for the wellbeing of the population using public facilities as their means of transport.
The waiting area in bus terminal has always been overcrowded. To ensure social distancing we provided partition sitting. To create contact-less seating spaces partition was necessary, ETFE panels do not let virus stay on surface, hence chosen. The ticketing queue was for just the sake of name before pandemic as people would line up anywhere for tickets. The major concern after the pandemic is to guide and make people follow the design attributes by introducing UV red lights on the spaces meant to be left vacant.
